Abstract:Polymeric membranes have been applied in industrial gas separations for decades. Competing technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and sorption processes, require the gases to be either condensed or thermally regenerated from the sorbents. In contrast, membrane gas separation does not involve phase transition, representing the potential for a more energy efficient and eco-friendly separation process. However, the overall energy consumption by membrane gas separation is highly dependent on the quality of the membrane employed for the separation process. With the goal of reducing the energy input needed for creating the transmembrane pressure difference, numerous bulk polymers have been investigated. However, less effort has been devoted to processing polymers into ultrathin membranes and investigating their gas permeation properties, which can be quite different from their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advances in fabricating ultrathin gas-selective polymeric membranes. Several classes of ultrathin polymeric membranes are highlighted: microporous polymers, facilitated transport polymeric membranes, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposited polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), polyamides and other commercial polymers. The application of gas-selective polymeric membranes beyond gas separation is also included as a meaningful extension to this review.

Abstract:Membrane materials with excellent selectivity and high permeability are the key for high-efficiency membrane separation. New-type porous materials have developed as ideal building blocks for molecular sieving membranes due to their inherent properties, such as permanent porosity, high surface area, structural diversity and low mass transfer barriers. In actual industrial promotion and separation applications, porous materials need to be combined with substrates to prepare porous composite membranes. In order to reduce costs and increase processing flexibility, the combination of organic polymer substrates and porous materials has received more attentions. The multifunctional design strategy of the membrane material and membrane structure of porous composite membranes based on the organic subatrates is the key to realize the further improvement of mass transfer. In this review, we focus on the organic matrix porous composite membrane based on the participation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and organic-organic composite materials, and conduct an in-depth discussion on the transport mechanism of porous composite membranes, and highlight diverse structural control strategies from the perspectives of macrostructural design and microstructural regulation of membrane structures. Finally, the applications of porous composite membrane based on organic substrate in precise molecular sieving are summarized, and the future opportunities and challenges in this field are discussed briefly.

Abstract:Microporous organic polymers (MOPs) are ideal candidates for designing highly efficient and precise molecular sieving separation membranes due to their exceptional porosity, rigid pore structure, pore size designability, and ease of functionalization. These materials encompass COFs, POCs, PAFs, PIMs, CMPs, and HCPs. However, the path to utilizing MOPs as separation membrane applications has encountered obstacles. Several studies have been conducted to fully exploit the exceptional properties of these polymers. The better application of MOPs materials should be considered in terms of material design and synthesis, membrane formation, and membrane task-specific applications. This review objectively reclassifies MOPs materials based on the latest research and material ordering and provides a systematic summary of MOPs material synthesis and design, MOPs-based membrane fabrication difficulties, and current novel MOPs-based membrane design. Additionally, it introduces in detail the preparation of different types of MOPs-based membranes. The applications of MOPs-based membranes in separation applications are also thoroughly summarized. Finally, this review summarizes the challenges of current MOPs-based membrane development, proposes future opportunities and potential applications in the separation and purification field.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology has shown great potential as an indispensable application in the growing energy demand. Desalination and gas separation is challenging membrane separation processes; among them, membrane materials play a crucial role. Many modern nanomaterials, such as inorganic-organic mixed nano -materials (covalent/metal-organic frameworks (COFs/MOFs)), can shape specific channels for conveying and separating target molecules due to their structural tunability. By combining novel nanomaterials with traditional polymeric materials, new opportunities have arisen, significantly improving performance and reducing energy consumption. This review aims to generalize the advantages and limitations of varying membrane materials, including organic and inorganic materials. Furthermore, emerging nanomaterials and new mixed matrix mate-rials are discussed from different perspectives. Finally, we proposed to combine outstanding membranes with various novel materials to enhance energy-efficient membrane materials' commercial applications.

Abstract:Over the past decades, much attention has been paid to develope novel approaches towards water treatment, in particular the membrane filtration, to deal with the severe environmental crisis. One of the research foci is the organic-inorganic composite membranes for their advantages from both polymers and inorganics. In this review, we focus on the composite porous membranes and outline the advances in this field. In recent years, numerous of methods have been developed to fabricate such membranes, including blending, in situ generation, surface modification, atomic layer deposition, and biomineralization. The membranes can be categorized into two models according to the distribution of inorganics in the membrane: the embedding model and enveloping model. In addition, we summarize the practical applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes in antifouling and anti-bacterial uses, oil/water separation, catalysis, absorption, battery separator and enzyme immobilization. We suggest the "enveloping model" a better choice to construct the novel organic-inorganic composite membranes with high performance for its high surface mineral coverage.

Abstract:Porous organic cages (POCs) emerge as a new category of crystalline extended solids —assembled by discrete organic molecules— featuring cage-shaped architectures and inherent cavities. The unique synthesis and assembly of cage molecules endow POCs with intriguing strengths of high porosity, amendable open-pore structures, and favored solution processability. This yields multiple options for designs and fabrications of POC-based membranes with huge potential in advanced gas/liquid separations. This review highlights crucial characteristics of POCs such as window-cavity structure and tunable porosity, processability, hydrophilicity, and surface charge for membrane design and performance. A further discussion on the fabrication of POC membranes based on molecular designs is directed towards structure–property correlation analyses of POC membranes. Applications of reported POC membranes in gas separation, liquid separation, and other related separations are explored. Current challenges and future outlook on POC membranes are given to provide a guidance for design and fabrication of functional POC membranes with a broader range of customized separations.

Abstract:<p>Polyamide membranes dominate the membrane industry; yet in their use they have a fundamental challenge to break through the upper bound due to an uncontrollable, excessive crosslinking degree. A novel trend is the development of microporous polymeric membranes with rigidly intrinsic pores for rapid and precise molecular separation. Advanced microporous organic polymers (MOPs), divided into crystalline (e.g., COFs) and amorphous (e.g., PIMs, PAFs, CMPs, POCs, HCPs, etc.) catalogues, have proven promising in the development of molecular sieving membranes. Different from traditional polymers with dynamic microporosity, MOPs have sturdy and well-defined pore architectures due to a significant reduction of segmental chain motion, enabled by molecular-level design of the void-forming elements. MOPs have swiftly evolved as a promising alternative to conventional materials due to their intriguing inherent attributes, including robust organic backbone, persistent porosity, and high surface area. This review commences with the introduction of the MOP categories and elucidates their critical characteristics and advantages for membrane fabrication. In addition, recent breakthroughs on ultrahigh permeability MOP-based membranes based on molecular-level design approaches are highlighted, aiming at an in-depth understanding of the structure-function correlation of MOP membranes. Furthermore, a summary of applying MOP membranes for rapid molecular separations such as gas separation, water treatment, separation in a solvent phase, pervaporation, and fuel cells is outlined. Finally, a concise conclusion, current limitations as well as future opportunities and directions on the developments and applications of MOP membranes are presented.</p>

Abstract:Microporous framework membranes such as metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes and covalent organic framework (COF) membranes are constructed by the controlled growth of small building blocks with large porosity and permanent well-defined micropore structures, which can overcome the ubiquitous tradeoff between membrane permeability and selectivity; they hold great promise for the enormous challenging separations in energy and environment fields. Therefore, microporous framework membranes are endowed with great expectations as next-generation membranes, and have evolved into a booming research field. Numerous novel membrane materials, versatile manipulation strategies of membrane structures, and fascinating applications have erupted in the last five years. First, this review summarizes and categorizes the microporous framework membranes with pore sizes lower than 2 nm based on their chemistry: inorganic microporous framework membranes, organic-inorganic microporous framework membranes, and organic microporous framework membranes, where the chemistry, fabrications, and differences among these membranes have been highlighted. Special attention is paid to the membrane structures and their corresponding modifications, including pore architecture, intercrystalline grain boundary, as well as their diverse control strategies. Then, the separation mechanisms of membranes are covered, such as diffusion-selectivity separation, adsorption-selectivity separation, and synergetic adsorption-diffusion-selectivity separation. Meanwhile, intricate membrane design to realize synergistic separation and some emerging mechanisms are highlighted. Finally, the applications of microporous framework membranes for precise gas separation, liquid molecule separation, and ion sieving are summarized. The remaining challenges and future perspectives in this field are discussed. This timely review may provide genuine guidance on the manipulation of membrane structures and inspire creative designs of novel membranes, promoting the sustainable development and steadily increasing prosperity of this field.

Abstract:Molecular separations that enable selective transport of target molecules from gas and liquid molecular mixtures, such as CO2 capture, olefin/paraffin separations, and organic solvent nanofiltration, represent the most energy sensitive and significant demands. Membranes are favored for molecular separations owing to the advantages of energy efficiency, simplicity, scalability, and small environmental footprint. A number of emerging microporous organic materials have displayed great potential as building blocks of molecular separation membranes, which not only integrate the rigid, engineered pore structures and desirable stability of inorganic molecular sieve membranes, but also exhibit a high degree of freedom to create chemically rich combinations/sequences. To gain a deep insight into the intrinsic connections and characteristics of these microporous organic material-based membranes, in this review, for the first time, we propose the concept of organic molecular sieve membranes (OMSMs) with a focus on the precise construction of membrane structures and efficient intensification of membrane processes. The platform chemistries, designing principles, and assembly methods for the precise construction of OMSMs are elaborated. Conventional mass transport mechanisms are analyzed based on the interactions between OMSMs and penetrate(s). Particularly, the 'STEM' guidelines of OMSMs are highlighted to guide the precise construction of OMSM structures and efficient intensification of OMSM processes. Emerging mass transport mechanisms are elucidated inspired by the phenomena and principles of the mass transport processes in the biological realm. The representative applications of OMSMs in gas and liquid molecular mixture separations are highlighted. The major challenges and brief perspectives for the fundamental science and practical applications of OMSMs are tentatively identified.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic composite membranes are of great interest in modern water treatment processes because they offer potentially superior separation efficiency and advanced functionality by integrating the properties of polymers and inorganics. The biggest challenge in the fabrication and applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes is the incompatibility of organic-inorganic interfaces. In this minireview, we summarize the most recent advances in molecular engineering to tailor the properties of interfaces in composite membranes. Three typical models (i.e. mixed matrix models, interface composite models, and dual-layer composite models) are presented to demonstrate how to regulate these interfaces via molecular engineering and how the interfacial properties ultimately affect the membrane performance.

Abstract:As a new class of porous solid materials with structural variability, notable porosity, and good dispersibility, metal-organic cages (MOCs) have shown great promise as filler components for separation membranes. Research into MOC-based membranes has blossomed over the last decade because of their high performance in separation, desalination, and artificial channel. In this review, we summarize current membranes based on MOCs including mixed matrix membranes, cross-linked membranes, composite membranes, bilayer lipid membranes, and liquid membranes, and provide a brief overview of their applications. The challenges and opportunities in future developments are also discussed.

Abstract:Membrane technology is one of the most promising technologies for separation and purification that is routinely and commercially employed in aqueous solutions. In comparison, its applications in organic solvents are severely underdeveloped mainly due to the poor stability of traditional polymer membranes in organic solvents. The emerging materials such as crosslinked polymers, covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks, conjugated microporous polymers, carbon molecular sieves, and graphene provide the solutions to address this problem. The membranes constructed with these novel materials show outstanding separation performance in regard to both high selectivity and solvent permeability, greatly pushing forward utilization of membrane technology in organic media. Here, an overview of the most important organic mixtures that need to be separated, the major separation processes adopted nowadays in organic solvents, and the recent progress in new developed membranes is provided.

Abstract:Membrane-based gas separation, characterized by a small footprint, low energy consumption and no pollution, has gained widespread attention as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gas separation. Metal–organic-frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be one of the most promising membrane-based gas separation materials because of their large specific surface area and high porosity. One of the hottest studies at the moment is how to utilize the characteristics of MOFs to prepare higher performance gas separation membranes. This paper provides a review of gas separation membranes used in recent years. Firstly, the synthesis methods of MOFs and MOF membranes are briefly introduced. Then, methods to improve the membrane properties of MOFs are described in detail, and include applications of lamellar MOFs, ionic liquid (IL) spin coating, functionalization of MOFs, defect engineering and mixed fillers. In addition, the challenges of MOF-based gas separation membranes are presented, including pore size, environmental disturbances, plasticization, interfacial compatibility, and so on. Finally, based on the current development status of the MOF membranes, the development prospects of MOF gas separation membranes are discussed. It is hoped to provide reliable and complete ideas for researchers to prepare high-performance gas separation membranes in the future.

Abstract:<p>Porous and crystalline materials such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have expanded the scope of membrane materials. In this review, we focus on the state-of-the-art polycrystalline membranes fabricated from these materials, as well as their crystalline structure, uniform microporosity and molecular-sieving capacity. We first discuss the basics of membrane-based separations and compare the transport properties between dense polymeric membranes and porous polycrystalline membranes. Subsequently, we evaluate the performance of polycrystalline zeolite/MOF membranes in applications such as gas separation, organic solvent nanofiltration, water purification, ion separation and chiral separation. Finally, we present a comparison between zeolite membranes and MOF membranes in terms of synthesis and chemical tunability.</p>

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials constructed by polynuclear metal clusters and organic linkers. In recent years, research efforts have been switching from fundamental studies of MOFs to the exploration of engineered forms of MOFs for specific applications. Particularly, MOF-based membranes have been extensively studied for challenging molecular separations. The design of high-quality MOF membranes with highly efficient separation performance requires controllable manipulation and functionalization of MOF structures. In-situ modification and post-synthetic modification (PSM) are two efficient ways to manipulate MOF structures. Comparing these two approaches, PSM is more appealing as it allows for the functionalization of diverse MOFs, while the in-situ modification is limited to a restricted set of MOF candidates. This review focuses on recent advances in the post-synthetic modification of MOFs and their membranes for enhanced molecular separation applications. Different categories of post-synthetic modification methods are summarized. Representative examples of post-synthetically modified polycrystalline MOF membranes and MOF composite membranes are discussed. Furthermore, the significant contributions of post-synthetic modification to the enhanced molecular separation performance of MOF membranes are highlighted. Last but not least, challenges and opportunities for bringing MOF membranes from the laboratory scale to practical separation applications are presented to guide the future development of MOF membranes with industrially attractive molecular separation performance.

Abstract:Over the last decades, porous organic materials (POMs) have been extensively employed in various industrial approaches including gas separation, catalysis and energy production due to possessing indisputable advantages like great surface area, high permeability, controllable pore size, appropriate functionalization and excellent processability compared to traditional substances like zeolites, Alumina and polymers. This review presents the recent breakthroughs in the multifunctional POMs for potential use in the membrane-based CO 2 separation. Some examples of highly-selective membranes using multifunctional POMs are described. Moreover, various classifications of POMs following with their advantages and disadvantages in CO 2 separation processes are explained. Apart from reviewing the state-of-the-art POMs in CO 2 separation, the challenges/limitations of POMs with tailored structures for reasonable application are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have attracted significant attentions for their distinguished characteristics in pervaporation such as enhanced selectivity, increased permeability and improved mechanical strength through the synergistic integration of polymeric matrices and inorganic fillers. Although many publications have emerged in recent years focusing on MOF-based MMMs, this review specifically emphasizes the improvement of MOF-based pervaporation membranes through the design of dimension of fillers and microstructure. The challenges encountered in MOF-based MMMs for pervaporation and the essential requirements for practical separation applications are addressed. A brief summary of strategies is provided for designing MOF-based MMMs with desired microstructure, macrostructure and multicomponent characteristics by using MOFs as fillers. The latest progresses in novel MOF-based MMMs with specific compositions, controllable pore structure and improved compatibility for recovery of organics are also displayed. The broad application prospects of MOF-based MMMs in pervaporation are introduced, including recovery of ethyl alcohol, butanol and other organics. Moreover, the challenges faced in the practical application of MOF-based MMMs for recovery of organics are presented and the promising future directions are outlined.

Abstract:This review discusses the state of the art on the synthesis, functionalization and emerging applications of mesoporous silica materials. Mesoporous silica materials can be synthesized as membranes or powders with controlled pore size and geometry depending on the synthesis conditions. Mesoporous membranes are generally grown on porous supports by solvent evaporation or hydrothermal synthesis techniques. Synthesis of powdered mesoporous silica materials with controlled pore sizes in the range 2–30nm and various different pore geometries has been an active area of research over last 15years. Functionalization of the pore channels of ordered mesoporous silica with organic groups provides new opportunities for fine-tuning the chemical, physical, mechanical, and dielectric properties of these intriguing materials. This has led to an interest in application of these materials as separation membranes for the removal of environmental pollutants, e.g. greenhouse CO2 emissions, and the separation of bioethanol from water; heterogeneous catalysts; adsorbents for removal of environmental pollutants, such as Hg; as well as other advanced nanotechnological applications.

Metal and Covalent Organic Frameworks (MOFs and COFs) are a new class of crystalline porous materials with large surface area, tuneable pore size, structure, and functionality, making them a perfect candidate for membrane applications. In recent years an enormous number of articles have been published on the use of MOFs and COFs in preparation of membranes for various applications. This review gathers the work reported on the synthesis and preparation of membranes containing MOFs and COFs in the last 10 years. Here we give an overview on membranes and their use in separation technology, discussing the essential factors in their synthesis as well as their limitations. A full detailed summary of the preparation and characterization methods used for MOF and COF membranes is given. Finally, applications of these membranes in gas and liquid separation as well as fuel cells are discussed. This review is aimed at both experts in the field and newcomers, including students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, who would like to learn about preparation of membranes from crystalline porous materials.
