Abstract:A boiler is classified as a fired pressure vessel. Parts of the boiler that are subjected to high internal pressure of steam or water are referred to here aspressure parts.Tubes, drum, and headers are examples of pressure parts. Other components likes burners, etc., are not subjected to such internal pressure. As such they are classified as nonpressure parts. Selection of materials for pressure parts of a boiler and their mechanical design and construction are important aspects of a boiler design. In the early days of the industrial revolution many accidents occurred where boiler vessels burst under pressure, killing many operating personnel. More recently, a failed boiler flange in a ship of the United States Navy killed ten sailors (Peterson, 1997). Such incidents warrant utmost care in the design as well as the operation of pressure parts. The boiler pressure parts are inspected periodically by statutory authorities for safe operation. These authorities set their own guidelines and stipulations that govern the design and operation of boilers in their specific country. The present chapter discusses the principles involved in the choice of materials and in the mechanical design of pressure parts. The following section shows (i) factors affecting the selection of materials, (ii) important mechanical properties, and (iii) how the properties of steel can be improved by altering its composition and by suitable mechanical processing.
