Abstract:The reaction process and the reaction behavior of each component in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system are presented in this paper. It reveals that the reaction is carried out in three different stages: forming of an insulating interphase at 680°C–790°C, forming of the 2212 superconducting phase at 790°C–860°C and forming often semiconducting phases in the presence of the liquid phase at 860°C–970°C. It is also confirmed that the 2212 superconducting phase (Tc=85 K) is formed by the reaction of a trinary interphase together with CuO, SrO and CaO. A new two-step method is presented to prepare the 2212 superconducting phase by a presynthesized interphase.

Abstract:The phase relationships of the In2O3−TiO2−CaO and In2O3−TiO2−SrO systems have been studied at 1350 °C in air. The In2O3−TiO2−CaO system contains a ternary compound Ti6In6CaO22 crystallizing in an incommensurate structure. The In2O3−TiO2−SrO system, on the other hand, is a simple ternary phase diagram without any ternary phases. The structure of Ti6In6CaO22 can be expressed by an incommensurate composite model that consists of two subsystems: the first subsystem, containing the InO6 octahedral layer and the Ti atoms in the TiOx layer, is rather rigid and can be reasonably represented with the averaged structure within the main lattice, a = 5.951(1) A, b1 = 3.422(1) A, c = 6.352(1) A, and β = 108.32(1)°; the second subsystem, consisting of only the O2 atoms in the TiOx layer, can be expressed with a smaller subcell, a = 5.951(1) A, b2 = 2.464(1) A, c = 6.352(1) A, and β = 108.32(1)°. Abstract:The subsolidus phase relations of R2O3–CaO–CuO ternary systems (R=Nd, Sm, Gd, Tm) have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. All samples were synthesized at about 950° in air. There exists a ternary compound Ca14−xRxCu24O41 (x = 4 for R=Nd, Gd and x = 5 for R = Sm) and a ternary solid solution Ca2+xR2−xCu5O10 (R=Nd, Sm, Gd, Tm) with a wide composition range Δx of about 0.6. The compound Ca14−xRxCu24O41 possesses a layered orthorhombic structure and is isostructural to Sr14−xCaxCu24O41. The lattice parameters a and c of the compound are basically independent of the ionic radius of R, while the lattice parameter b and unit-cell volume V decrease substantially with the decrease of the ionic radii of R. The Ca2+xR2−xCu5O10 solid solution is isostructural to Ca2+xY2−xCu5O10, the structure of which is based on an orthorhombic “NaCuO2-type” subcell containing infinite one-dimensional chains of edge-shared square planar cuprate groups crosslinked by the layered cations Ca and R that locate in the inter-chain tunnels.

Abstract:Orbital ordering (OO) or charge ordering (CO) in e1g compounds like RMnO3 (R = rare-earth element), RNiO3, and CaFeO3 makes them attractive functional materials. Despite belonging to the e1g family, SrFeO3 is metallic and free from OO and CO, which may limit its technological potential. Here, through first-principles calculations, we propose a rational design of OO and CO insulating SrFeO3 by superlattice strategy and strain engineering. With a systematical investigation of the interplay among Jahn-Teller distortion related to OO, breathing distortion associated with CO, strain, octahedral rotations, and cation ordering, we reveal that cation ordering in SrFeO3/ABO3 superlattices not only is capable to stabilize Jahn-Teller and breathing distortions, but is also indispensable in triggering metal-insulator transition by the collaboration with Jahn-Teller or breathing distortion, leading to ferromagnetic insulating SrFeO3. Owing to the different sensitivity of Jahn-Teller and breathing distortions to strain, purposeful design of OO or CO phase and even as multiferroics coexisting ferro-electric and ferromagnetic orders can be realized by tuning the relative stability of CO and OO phases by strain engineering. The coupled charge, orbital, spin, and ferroelectricity degrees of freedom make SrFeO3/ABO3 superlattices appealing for desired applications.

Abstract:The article is devoted to studying the ternary system CoO—Fe2O3—Al2O3 structure with the determination of the thermodynamic equilibrium compositions of phases in its subsolidus. For theoretical studies in the CoO—Fe2O3—Al2O3 system, initial thermodynamic constants were calculated for CoAl2O4 and Fe2Al2O6. Subsequently, the entire possible array of exchangetype solidphase reactions was simulated with the participation of stoichiometric compounds of the system. The possibility of destabilization of combinations of CoAl2O4 and CoFe2O4 phases in comparison with threephase combinations was verified, namely, the article considered reactions not of the “2 = 2” type, but of the “2 = 3” type (two starting compounds and three compounds in the interaction products, or vice versa). It is noted that all possible variants of reactions of the “2 = 3” type in the CoO—Fe2O3—Al2O3 system can be modeled as linear combinations of exchangetype reactions with the participation of stoichiometric compounds of the system. The calculation of DG = f(T) values for them is reduced to a simple algebraic summation of the corresponding values of DG for the reactions that make up the combination of system phases. The calculations analysis of the change in Gibbs free energy with temperature in the range from 800 to 2000 K for the analyzed solidphase reactions made it possible to carry out a complete triangulation of the CoO—Fe2O3—Al2O3 system with its division into elementary triangles. The geometrical and topological characteristics of the CoO—Fe2O3—Al2O3 system and its phases are determined. Information about phase relationships and thermodynamic stability of phase combinations can be useful in developing specialpurpose refractory nonmetallic materials. The use of compounds included in the elementary triangle CoO—CoFe2O4—CoAl2O4, which according to its geometric and topological characteristics has the maximum area, in the production of special materials with specified properties is proposed.

Abstract:The phase relation in the Fe-rich region of the Gd-Fe-Ti system at 1373 K has been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and the phase-disappearing method. In the investigated composition region, four ternary phases: GdFe11Ti, GdFe9Ti2, Gd(Fe1−xTix)9 (x≈0.062), Gd3(Fe1−xTix)29 (x=0.0111–0.0339), one pseudobinary phase: Gd2(Fe1−xTix)17 (x=0.0000–0.0511) and three binary phases: Gd6Fe23, Fe2Ti and GdFe3, are observed. Dependence of the lattice parameters on Ti content (x) in Gd2(Fe1−xTix)17 and Gd3(Fe1−xTix)29 is reported.

Abstract:The stable phase equilibria of ternary systems Li^(+),Rb^(+)//SO(4) ^(2-)-H(2)O and Li^(+),Cs^(+)//SO(4) ^(2-)-H(2)O at 273.2 K are studied herein by the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. Abstract:This paper reports on the experimental investigation of the phase relations in the CaO-SiO2-Dy2O3 system. CaO-SiO2-Dy2O3 slags were equilibrated at 1773 and 1873 K for 86400 s in Ar and then quenched in water to determine the phase relations of the system. The composition of the equilibrated phases was measured by EPMA-WDS and XRD. The presence of ternary compounds and the solid solution and liquid regions were determined to construct the isothermal sections at 1773 and 1873 K of the ternary phase diagram. The data from this work will support further investigations on the feasibility to recover REEs through pyrometallurgical processing.

Abstract:The phase relationship of the TbO1.81–Mn3O4–Fe2O3 pseudo-ternary system synthesized at 1200 °C was determined using X-ray and neutron diffraction method. Four solid solutions, Mn3−3xFe3xO4 (0.00 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.278), Mn3−3xFe3xO4 (0.291 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.667), Mn2−2xFe2xO3 (0.89 ⩽ x ⩽ 1.00), and (Tb1−yMnzFex)(FewMn1−w)O3 (1−y + x + z ⩽ 1, 0.00 ⩽ w ⩽ 1.00) were found along with six two-phase regions and three three-phase regions. The boundaries were determined by several different methods such as phase disappearing, the Vigard's law, and the lever rule.

Abstract:Subsolidus phase relations of the constant copper oxide content (50 mol%) section in the PrO11/6–BaO–CaO–CuO system at 950°C in air are investigated by means of X-ray diffraction analyses. The phase relations consist of 1 single-phase region, 1 two-phase region, 2 three-phase regions and 6 four-phase regions. Mutual substitutions among Pr, Ba and Ca in the Pr123 structure were studied in detail. The result indicates that Ba ions can be replaced exclusively by Pr ions, but not by Ca ions, whereas Ca ions can partially occupy the sites of Pr ions. The ionic radius plays a more important role than the chemical property for substitution among Pr, Ba and Ca ions in the Pr123 structure.

Abstract:This work presents a study of the electronic phase separation resulting from oxygen non-stoichiometry in SrCoOx. We report here that for oxygen content 2.88 ≤ x ≤ 3, SrCoOx exhibits a magnetic phase separation while maintaining a single crystallographic phase. Two magnetic components are formed which match those found in SrCoO2.88 and SrCoO3 with TC = 220 K and 280 K, respectively. In addition, a value of TC = 160 K is assigned to the previously identified SrCoO2.75 phase. A magnetic phase diagram with four line phases is proposed for SrCoOx (2.5 ≤ x ≤ 3).

Abstract:The isothermal section of the phase diagram of the Gd-Sm-Co ternary system at 773 K was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The result shows that the isothermal section consists of 12 single-phase regions, 16 two-phase regions and 5 three-phase regions. Five pairs of corresponding compounds of Gd-Co and Sm-Co systems, i.e., Gd2Co17 and Sm2Co17, Gd2Co7 and Sm2Co7, GdCo3 and SmCo3, GdCo2 and SmCo2, Gd3Co and Sm3Co form continuous series of solid solutions. The maximum solid solubility of Sm in Gd4Co3 and Gd12Co7 were about 7.2 at.% and 47.8 at.% Sm, respectively. The maximum solid solubility of Gd in Sm5Co19 and Sm5Co2 were about 4.7 at.% and 7.6 at.% Gd, respectively. The binary compounds Sm9Co4, GdCo5 and SmCo5 were not observed at 773 K. No ternary compound was found.

Abstract:Most observed phase separation phenomena in complex oxides occur in systems with chemical dopants or structural defects, and theories have established the strong connection between phase separation and the random distribution of chemical dopants. Recent experiments on fabricated high-quality oxide superlattices also confirmed that the phase separation is suppressed in the clean systems without chemical disorders. Thus far, phase separation in strongly correlated oxides without the need of chemical dopants or structural defects has not been fully demonstrated. Here, we have built chemically ordered hybrid superlattices using prototypical SrRuO3 and SrTiO3 perovskite oxides. Contrary to previous understandings, we observe phase separation of two magnetic phases with different spin easy axes. We elucidate this phenomenon through first-principles calculations that the hybrid superlattices have a spontaneous structural instability, leading to a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. Our findings provide an alternative pathway other than chemical doping to introduce phase separation in correlated oxides and imply that phase separation can exist in clean systems without the need of chemical disorders.
