Abstract:The Sb2Se3-Gd2Te3 system was studied using differential thermal analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, and microstructure examination. This is a quasi-binary system. Sb2Se3-based solubility at 300 K is 10 mol % Gd2Te3. The eutectic contains 20 mol % Gd2Te3 and melts at 760 K. One incongruently melting compound (870 K) of composition GdSbTe1.5Se1.5 was found in the system.

Abstract:Phase equilibria in the quasi-ternary systems HgS–Ga2S3–Bi(Sb)2S3 were studied by physico-chemical analysis methods on 177 alloys that were synthesized by direct single-temperature method. Phase diagrams of the quasi-binary systems HgS–Bi2S3 and Ga2S3–Bi2S3, six vertical sections (HgGa2S4–HgBi2S4, HgGa2S4–Bi2S3, HgGa6S10–Bi2S3, HgGa6S10–HgBi2S4, HgGa2S4–Sb2S3, and HgS–“GaSbS3”), and liquidus surface projections were investigated. Due to large primary crystallization region of mercury thiogallate, particularly at the HgGa2S4–Bi2S3 and HgGa2S4–HgBi2S4 sections, and low temperature (950-1050 K), the growth of single crystals of mercury thiogallate is possible using solution-melt method.

Abstract:A thermodynamic assessment of the binary Gd–Sb system was performed through the CALPHAD approach (CALculation of PHAse Diagram) based on the evaluation of all phase diagram data and available thermodynamic data in the literature. The liquid, hcp-A3 (αGd) and bcc-A2 (βGd) phases were described by a substitutional solution model. All the intermediate phases, Gd5Sb3, Gd4Sb3, βGdSb, αGdSb and Gd16Sb39, were treated as stoichiometric compounds. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters of the Gd–Sb system has been obtained. A good agreement is obtained between the experimental and the calculated phase diagrams.

Abstract:The stabilities and phase evolutions of the binary Bi-S compounds are investigated by using synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell in combination with laser heating technique. When it is heated to 1300 K at 32.6 GPa, Bi2S3 decomposes into element S and a new BiS phase, which can be quenched to ambient conditions. The present results verify that cubic BiS, with an unprecedented stoichiometry and novel bonding characteristics, is at least metastable. It may shed new light on the fundamental sciences and potential technologies of the group V-VI binary compounds.

Abstract:The Sn–Bi–Ag system is an important ternary system for electronic products, and this study investigates its phase equilibria and solidification behavior. Sn–Bi–Ag alloys were prepared and equilibrated at 210°C and 400°C, and their equilibrium phases were determined. Thermodynamic descriptions of the ternary Sn–Bi–Ag system are developed from the results determined in this study and those available in the literature. Isothermal sections and liquidus projection are then calculated using the determined Sn–Bi–Ag thermodynamic descriptions. Solidified microstructures of three Sn–Bi–Ag alloys are examined. It is found that the solidification paths cut through the monovariant line, instead of following the monovariant line as expected.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the phase diagram of the Gd-Sm-Co ternary system at 773 K was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The result shows that the isothermal section consists of 12 single-phase regions, 16 two-phase regions and 5 three-phase regions. Five pairs of corresponding compounds of Gd-Co and Sm-Co systems, i.e., Gd2Co17 and Sm2Co17, Gd2Co7 and Sm2Co7, GdCo3 and SmCo3, GdCo2 and SmCo2, Gd3Co and Sm3Co form continuous series of solid solutions. The maximum solid solubility of Sm in Gd4Co3 and Gd12Co7 were about 7.2 at.% and 47.8 at.% Sm, respectively. The maximum solid solubility of Gd in Sm5Co19 and Sm5Co2 were about 4.7 at.% and 7.6 at.% Gd, respectively. The binary compounds Sm9Co4, GdCo5 and SmCo5 were not observed at 773 K. No ternary compound was found.

Abstract:Bi 2 Te 3 is one of the most promising thermoelectric materials, and Sn is the primary constituent of most electronic solders. Knowledge of phase equilibria of the Sn-Bi-Te ternary system is important for thermoelectric applications. Twenty-seven Sn-Bi-Te alloys were prepared and equilibrated at 160°C and 500°C. The equilibrium phases were determined, and the isothermal sections were constructed based on three binary constituent phase diagrams and ternary phase equilibria results. No ternary compounds were observed in the Sn-SnTe-Bi region. The SnTe phase is very stable and has tie-lines with the Sn, liquid, and Bi phases at 160°C. At 500°C, in addition to the already known SnBi 2 Te 4 and SnBi 4 Te 7 ternary phases, two new ternary compounds (Sn 2 Bi 2 Te 5 and SnBiTe 2 phases) were found. SnTe and Bi 2 Te 3 have significant mutual solubilities, and the ternary compounds SnBi 2 Te 4 , SnBi 4 Te 7 , and Sn 2 Bi 2 Te 5 are all in the SnTe-Bi 2 Te 3 pseudobinary section.

Abstract:Phase equilibria in the Gd-rich Gd–Ge–Si ternary system (Gd≥40at.%) at 900°C were investigated mainly by X-ray powder diffraction. The binary compounds, Gd5Ge3, Gd5Si3, Gd5Ge4, Gd5Si4, GdGe, GdSi, Gd2Ge3 and Gd2Si3, and the ternary compound Gd5(Ge1−xSix)4 have been confirmed. The isothermal section of this system at 900°C was constructed. It is composed of 8 single-phase regions, 10 two-phase regions and 6 three-phase regions. Two ternary solid solutions, Gd5(Ge,Si)3 formed between Gd5Ge3 and Gd5Si3 (Mn5Si3-type structure), and Gd2(Ge,Si)3 formed between Gd2Ge3 and Gd2Si3 (AlB2-type structure), were found in this isothermal section. The maximum solid solubilities of Si in Gd5Ge4 and GdGe at 900°C are 10.3 and 35.0at.%, respectively, while those of Ge in Gd5Si4 and GdSi at 900°C are 20.5 and 11.5at.%, respectively. The homogeneity range of Gd5(Ge1−xSix)4 is from 13.3 to 22.0at.% Si (or x from 0.3 to 0.495).

Abstract:Bi-Sb-Se is an important thermoelectric material system. However, a phase diagram of the entire compositional range is not available in the literature. This study determines the Bi-Sb-Se liquidus projection and its phase equilibria isothermal section at 400 degrees C. Ternary Bi-Sb-Se alloys are prepared. Their primary solidification phases and invariant reactions are determined. There are seven primary solidification phases, (Se), Bi2Se3, Sb2Se3, (Bi, Sb), (Bi2)m(Bi2Se3)n, Bi3Sb5Se2 and Bi3Sb12Se5. Both Bi3Sb5Se2 and Bi3Sb12Se5 are newly found ternary com-pounds. In the Bi-Sb-Se isothermal section at 400 degrees C, there are eight three-phase regions. Besides these two ternary compounds, the other single phases are, Sb2Se3, Bi2Se3, (Bi2)m(Bi2Se3)n, Liquid (Bi,Sb), Liquid (Se), and (Bi,Sb) phases. It has been found the solubilities of Sb in the (Bi2)m(Bi2Se3)n and Bi2Se3 compounds are significant.

Abstract:The phase equilibria of the Nb–Si-Gd ternary system at 1273 K in all the composition ranges were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The isothermal section comprises 12 single-phase regions, 22 two-phase regions, and 11 three-phase regions. The existing of Nb 3 Si phase was confirmed at 1273 K by couple diffusion. A new ternary compound Gd 2 Nb 3 Si 4 was discovered and its crystal structure was analyzed by the Rietveld method with Rwp = 2.11%, Rp = 1.54%, R exp = 0.75%. It belongs to the space group P4 1 2 1 2 (No.92) with the lattice parameter a = b = 6.99048 Å, c = 12.94393 Å, α = β = γ = 90°.

Abstract:Knowledge of the phase equilibria of the Sn-Sb-Ag ternary system is of fundamental importance in Sn-Sb–based solder applications. Thermodynamic models of the ternary Sn-Sb-Ag system and the binary Sb-Ag and Sn-Ag systems are developed using the calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) method. The calculated 250 °C isothermal section, liquidus projection, and thermodynamic properties are in good agreement with the experimental results. There are two continuous solid solutions formed between the ε-Ag3Sn and ε-Ag3Sb, and ζ-Ag17Sb3 and ζ-Ag5Sn phases, but there is no ternary compound. There are three class II ternary invariant reactions, L + Sb ↔ ε + β-SnSb, L + β-SnSb ↔ Sn3Sb2 + ε, and L + Sn3Sb2 ↔ Sn + ε. Their reaction temperatures are 379 °C, 313 °C, and 231 °C, respectively.

Abstract:The Sn-Sb-Ag system is of interest to the electronics industry. However, only limited Sn-Sb-Ag phase equilibria information is available and the Sn-Sb-Ag liquidus projections in the literature are not consistent. The 250 °C isothermal section and the liquidus projection of the ternary Sn-Sb-Ag system are experimentally determined in this study. No ternary compounds are found. Two continuous solid solutions, ε and ζ phases, are formed between ε-Ag3Sn and ε-Ag3Sb, and ζ-Ag17Sb3 and ζ-Ag5Sn, respectively. There are three tie-triangles, L + Sn3Sb2 + ε, Sn3Sb2 + β-SnSb + ε, and β-SnSb + Sb + ε, in the 250 °C Sn-Sb-Ag isothermal section. The solubilities of Ag in the Sn3Sb2, β-SnSb, and Sb phases at 250 °C are very small. There are three ternary invariant reactions. The reaction temperatures are 379 °C, 314 °C, and 233 °C for the L + Sb = β-SnSb + ε, L + β-SnSb = Sn3Sb2 + ε, and L + Sn3Sb2 = ε + Sn, respectively.

Abstract:Bi-Sb-Se-Te is one of the most important material systems for thermoelectric applications. Phase diagrams of its constituent binary and ternary systems are reviewed and assessed. The Bi-Sb-Se-Te isothermal section tetrahedron at 400 degrees C and liquidus projection tetrahedron were proposed. Ternary compounds are only found in the Bi-Sb-Se system. There are eight three-phase regions at 400 degrees C and seven primary solidification phases in the Bi-Sb-Se system, including (Bi,Sb), (Bi2)m(Bi2Se3)n, Bi2Se3, Se, Sb2Se3, Bi3Sb5Se2, Bi3Sb12Se15. In the Bi-Sb-Te system, there are four three-phase regions at 400 degrees C. The (Bi,Sb)2Te3 and (Bi,Sb) are continuous solid solutions. In the Sb-Se-Te system, there are five three-phase regions and six primary solidification phases, including (Sb), 8-(Sb2Te), gamma-(SbTe), Sb2Te3, and (Se,Te). A wide range of (Bi,Sb)2(Se,Te)3 single-phase region was observed in the Bi-Sb-Se-Te quaternary system.

Abstract:Bi–In–Se ternary system is of thermoelectric application interests and its phase diagrams are fundamentally important. Experimental measurements and Calphad-type thermodynamic modeling are carried out to determine the phase diagrams of the Bi–In–Se ternary system. Bi–In–Se ternary alloys are prepared. The equilibrium phases at 250 °C and their primary solidification phases are determined. No ternary compound is observed. The primary solidification phases are Bi2Se3, Se, In2Se3, In6Se7, InSe, In4Se3, In, ε, BiIn2, Bi3In5, BiIn, Bi, and (Bi2)m(Bi2Se3)n. In the Bi–In–Se isothermal section at 250 °C, there are seven tie-triangles which are Liquid+(Bi)+InSe, Liquid + In4Se3+InSe, (Bi)+Bi6Se7+InSe, (Bi)+In6Se7+In2Se3, (Bi)+(Bi2)m(Bi2Se3)n + In2Se3, Bi2Se3+(Bi2)m(Bi2Se3)n + In2Se3 and Liquid + In2Se3 +Bi2Se3. The temperatures of invariant reactions are determined by thermal analysis, and the reaction scheme is determined. Calphad-type thermodynamic modeling of the Bi–In–Se ternary system is carried out based on the thermodynamic models of the three binary constituent systems, and experimental results of isothermal sections and liquidus projection. The calculated and experimentally determined Bi–In–Se phase diagrams are in good agreement.
