Abstract:The phase relationships of the In2O3−TiO2−CaO and In2O3−TiO2−SrO systems have been studied at 1350 °C in air. The In2O3−TiO2−CaO system contains a ternary compound Ti6In6CaO22 crystallizing in an incommensurate structure. The In2O3−TiO2−SrO system, on the other hand, is a simple ternary phase diagram without any ternary phases. The structure of Ti6In6CaO22 can be expressed by an incommensurate composite model that consists of two subsystems: the first subsystem, containing the InO6 octahedral layer and the Ti atoms in the TiOx layer, is rather rigid and can be reasonably represented with the averaged structure within the main lattice, a = 5.951(1) A, b1 = 3.422(1) A, c = 6.352(1) A, and β = 108.32(1)°; the second subsystem, consisting of only the O2 atoms in the TiOx layer, can be expressed with a smaller subcell, a = 5.951(1) A, b2 = 2.464(1) A, c = 6.352(1) A, and β = 108.32(1)°. Abstract:Sr3In0.9Co1.1O6, isostructural to Ca3Co2O6, is revealed by the study of the phase relations in the system SrO–InO1.5–CoOx (1000°C). The structure of Sr3In0.9Co1.1O6 is refined by the combination of powder X-ray and neutron diffraction. Sr3In0.9Co1.1O6 crystallizes in a trigonal lattice with the cell parameters a=b=9.59438(3)Å, c=11.02172(4)Å with the space group R-3c. Its structure possesses 1D (In/Co)O3 chains running along the c-axis constructed by alternating face-sharing CoO6 octahedra and (In0.9Co0.1)O6 trigonal prisms. The co-occupation of In3+ and Co3+ at the trigonal prismatic site is evidenced by elementary analysis and determined by the structure refinement. Sr3In0.9Co1.1O6 is paramagnetic, and the susceptibility is consistent with the occupation of Co3+ at 10% of the trigonal prismatic positions in a high spin state (HS, S=2). The HS Co3+ is well separated by diamagnetic CoO6 octahedra and InO6 trigonal prisms and shows a g factor of 2.0 in the magnetic measurements.

Abstract:Phase equilibria in the TiO2–Nb2O5 system has been investigated by using the high-speed pyrometer, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The liquidus temperatures in the whole composition region are determined by cooling trace tests. Combining with the observation of solidification structure, liquidus at the TiO2-rich corner are clarified and the eutectic composition of Liquid→TiO2+TiNb2O7 is revised to be 62.3 mol % TiO2. TiNb2O7 has been measured to have some solid solubility, and the existence of Ti2Nb6O19 at high temperature is confirmed. It would probably form through the peritectic reaction of Liquid + TiNb2O7→Ti2Nb6O19. Moreover, congruent reactions of Liquid→TiNb2O7 and Liquid→TiNb5O14.5 are measured as 1491 °C and ∼1478 °C, respectively. Subsequently, thermodynamic assessment of TiO2–Nb2O5 system has been carried out by means of the CALPHAD method, and a set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters is obtained. Calculated TiO2–Nb2O5 phase diagram can reasonably reproduce the available experimental data. The provided TiO2–Nb2O5 phase diagram and thermodynamic parameters may be useful to the development of titanium niobates and further multicomponent thermodynamic database.

Abstract:The subsolidus phase relations in the Bi4Ti3O12-Ag/Ag2O-TiO2 system were determined by means of solid-state reaction, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The rutile and anatase phases showed different chemistries when reacting with the Ag/Ag2O-Bi2O3, and the Ag0.5Bi8.5Ti7O27 phase can be obtained from the anatase form but not from the rutile form. In the present study the phase relations in the Bi-Ag-Ti-O system were established for the rutile form. The solid solutions TiO2SS, Bi4Ti3O12SS and Bi2Ti2O7SS were identified in the Bi4Ti3O12-Ag/Ag2O-TiO2 system and silver was found to be compatible with all three. There was no compatibility between the silver and the Bi2Ti4O11. A single-phase compound was obtained for the pyrochlore phase Bi1.55Ag0.1Ti2O6.375. (C) 2009 The Ceramic Society of Japan. Abstract:Phase relations, the existence of compounds and their electrical properties in the system MgO-La2O3-TiO2 have been investigated by means of solid state synthesis, X-ray diffraction analysis and a.c. impedance technique. Three compounds, MgLa10Ti7O30 (hexagonal, a=0.55642 nm, c=1.09916 nm, Z=1), MgLa6Ti4O18 (hexagonal, a=0.5566 nm, c=3.9692 nm, Z=3) and the new compound MgLa2TiO6 (orthorhombic a=0.56511 nm, b=0.76902 nm, c=0.55125 nm, V=2.395 nm(3), Z=2) were found in the system. The conductivity and dielectric constants of the pure phases were also measured. Abstract:With the purpose of providing fundamental understanding of equilibrium phase relations with the addition of Al2O3 to CaO-SiO2-5wt%MgO-Al2O3-TiO2 system, the equilibria phase relations were experimental determined from 1300 degrees C to 1450 degrees C at constant w(CaO)/w(SiO2) ratio of 1.50 using high temperature equilibrium and quenching method followed by XRD (X-Ray diffraction) and SEM-EDX (Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence scope) analysis. The results showed that with the increase of Al2O3 content up to 30 wt%, the coexisting equilibria solid phases gradually changed from perovskite of CaO center dot TiO2 and melilite solid solution of (2CaO center dot Al2O3 center dot SiO2, 2CaO center dot MgO center dot 2SiO(2)) ss to spinel of MgO center dot Al2O3. Comparisons with the predictions by Factsage revealed that the simulated results were only well agreed when Al2O3 content lower than 20 wt%, while significant discrepancies existed with Al2O3 content higher than 30 wt%. Finally, the 1400 degrees C and 1450 degrees C isotherms, as well as the predicted primary phase boundary lines were projected on the pseudo-ternary phase diagram of CaO-SiO2-5wt.%MgOeAl(2)O(3)-TiO2 system within specific composition range. Abstract:Cr1-xTixO2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solution was synthesized by a high-pressure and high-temperature method, whereafter systematic experimental and computational studies were conducted on the Cr1-xTixO2 system. The crystal structure of the samples where 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4 and x = 1 was of a rutile structure (P42/mnm), while samples where 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 0.9 crystallized in a CaCl2 structure (Pnnm). The structural transformation from rutile-type to CaCl2-type structure should be due to the combined action of positive chemical pressure and physical pressure. The saturation magnetization of the Cr1-xTixO2 samples decreased linearly with the increase of x because Ti4+ is nonmagnetic. In addition, the Curie temperature of the Cr1-xTixO2 samples also decreased noticeably with the increase of x. When nonmagnetic Ti4+ randomly replaced Cr4+ and occupied its position, the net exchange coupling in Cr1-xTixO2 would decrease. When Ti4+ occupied the majority in the system, Cr4+ ions would be separated by nonmagnetic Ti4+ ions far enough for the long-range ferromagnetic order to weaken or even disappear with the increase of x, causing the Cr1-xTixO2 system to finally approach a paramagnetic state. Density functional theory calculations were performed for the Cr1-xTixO2 system, and the predicted trends of the magnetic properties agreed well with the experimental results. These calculations also showed that Cr1-xTixO2 was still half-metallic until x reached 0.6.

Abstract:Using X‐ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy it was revealed that in an atmosphere of flowing oxygen in the temperature range 700°–800°C, three new compounds are formed in the Bi2O3–TiO2–TeO2 pseudoternary system. These compounds are Bi2Ti3TeO12, Bi2TiTeO8, and Bi6Ti5TeO22, and all the compounds include Te6+. All three crystal structures were solved and refined using X‐ray powder diffraction data. Based on the results of the phase formation, a solid‐state compatibility diagram is proposed.

Abstract:In order to resolve the lack of thermodynamic information for the comprehensive unilization of Ti-bearing blast furnace slag, the phase diagram relevant to the Ti-bearing slag composition was widely investigated. In the present work, the phase equilibrium relationships were investigated for the CaO-SiO 2 -5wt.%MgO-20wt.%Al 2 O 3 -TiO 2 phase diagram system. The equilibrium phases were experimentally determined at 1 300 ° C and 1 400 ° C using the high temperature equilibrium technique followed by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDX) analysis. The liquid phase (L), melilite solid solution ((2CaO·MgO·2SiO 2 , 2CaO·Al 2 O 3 ·SiO 2 ) ss ) phase, perovskite (CaO·TiO 2 ) phase, Al–Ti diopside phase and pseudobrookite solid solution (MgO·TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 ·TiO 2 ) ss phase were found. Based on the experimental results, the 1 300 ° C to 1 500 ° C liquidus lines and phase diagram were constructed for the specified region of the CaO-SiO 2 -5wt.%MgO-20wt.%Al 2 O 3 TiO 2 system.

Abstract:Magnéli phase titanium oxide (TinO2n-1, 4≤n≤10) has wide application prospects in energy storage, catalysis and other fields. During the preparation of TinO2n-1 phase from TiO2 by carbothermal reduction reaction (CRR), the coexistence of multiple phases caused by the change in the reduction degree is the theoretical and practical basis for obtaining TiO2/TinO2n-1 composite materials. In this work, H2Ti3O7 nanofiber has been employed as precursor for the following CRR process. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric (TG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis results confirmed the phase transformation process of H2Ti3O7→TiO2 (B)→Anatase→Rutile→TinO2n-1. Comprehensive transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization was carried out to investigate the phase composition and interface structures of the products calcinated under different temperatures. TiO2/Ti5O9 and λ-Ti3O5/γ-Ti3O5 interfaces have been observed with specific orientation relationships. In addition, the phase transition mechanism has also been revealed based on the structural analysis results. By carefully considering the crystal structure and symmetry of the parent and new phase, the initial lattice strain matrix based on the two observed interfaces has been established accordingly. The crystallographic features of the two types of interfaces have been calculated based on modified invariant line theory, which has confirmed the consistency of the experimental observation and calculated results. The research in this paper can further expand the applicability of the three-dimensional invariant line theory in low symmetry crystal materials.

Abstract:V2O5‐Fe2O3 and V2O5‐TiO2 systems represent two important chemical systems with various applications, including energy, catalysts, high‐performance materials, etc. In the present study, high‐temperature phase equilibrium experiments were conducted at the temperature range of 670 – 1000 °C in air. Electron probe X‐ray micro‐analyzer (EPMA) was used to analyze the microstructure and composition of the phases presented in quenched samples. Systematic experiments demonstrated that V2O5‐containing systems should not be quenched by water‐based quenching media. Phase diagrams in both systems were constructed, and the eutectic and peritectic points of the systems were confirmed and compared with previous studies. The present study improved the previous results and could be used as the base for thermodynamic modellings and further applications of the two systems.

Abstract:Indium titanate In2TiO5 powder was prepared by a low-temperature combustion synthesis method and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectrum and field-emission scanning electron microscope. The only ternary In/Ti/O compound In2TiO5, composed of the octahedral [TiO6] and [InO6] motifs, was selected to be a photocatalyst containing both early-transition metal (d0) and p-block metal (d10). The absorption spectrum indicates that In2TiO5 has an optical gap of 3.02eV. The photocatalytic property of the sample was evaluated by using the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO). The photocatalytic activity of In2TiO5 for the complete degradation of MO was higher than that of TiO2 (P25). Band calculations reveal that the high photocatalytic activity is tightly related to the electronic structure and the open crystal structure of In2TiO5.

Abstract:A series of oxides in the Mn3O4-Fe2O3 system have been synthesized at 1200 degrees C in air, followed by quenching to room temperature. Three solid solutions, Mn3-3xFe3xO4 (0.00 <= x <= 0.278), Mn3-3xFe3xO4(0.291 <= x <= 0.667), and Mn2-2xFe2xO3 (0.89 <= x <= 1.00), have been identified by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Rietveld refinement of the XRD data show that the solids belong to the hausnnannite phase with the space group l4(1)/amd, the spinel phase with the space group Fd3m, and the hematite phase with the space group respectively. Between these are two-phase regions. Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra indicate that the valence state of Fe in the three solid solutions is +3; in addition, there are two crystallographically independent Fe3+ ions in the unit cells of the hausmannite and spinel phases, and one Fe3+ in the hematite phase. Analyses of Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) revealed that a formula of Mn1-x2+Fex3+[Mnx2+Fex3+Mn2-3x3+] O-4 describes the cation distribution of both the hausmannite and spinel phases, but that for the hematite phase is Mn2-2x3+Fe2x3+O3.
Top-seeded solution growth of SrTiO3 crystals and phase diagram studies in the SrO-TiO2 system

Abstract:The TiO2 rich part of the (1-x) SrO + x TiO2 phase diagram 0.5 <= x <= 1.0 was redetermined and the eutectic point between SrTiO3 and TiO2 was found at x_eut=0.7700+/-0.0001; T_eut=(1449+/-3) deg C. From TiO2 rich melt solutions, x=0.75 centimeter-sized single crystals could be grown. The best crystals with etch pit density <2 x 10^4/cm^2 were obtained for growth directions <110> and <100>. AFM investigation of the interface reveals layer-by-layer growth.
