Abstract:X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy were employed to investigate structural stability of Fe2TiO4 under high pressure. Measurements were performed up to about 24GPa at room temperature using diamond anvil cell. Experimental results demonstrate that Fe2TiO4 undergoes a series of phase transitions from cubic (Fd3̄m) to tetragonal (I41/amd) at 8.7GPa, and then to orthorhombic structure (Cmcm) at 16.0GPa. The high-pressure phase (Cmcm) of Fe2TiO4 is kept on decompression to ambient pressure. In all polymorphs of Fe2TiO4, iron cations present a high-spin ferrous property without electric charge exchange with titanium cations at high pressure supported by Mössbauer evidences.

Abstract:The structural stability of Fe2Ti (P63/mmc) has been investigated by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction with diamond anvil cell. At room temperature, Fe2Ti shows a monotonous change of unit-cell volume in present pressure range up to 40.3GPa. Isothermal pressure–volume relationship of Fe2Ti (P63/mmc) is well described by the second order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state with V0=161.8(3)Å3 and B0=201(4)GPa. A new polymorph of Fe2Ti indexed to an orthorhombic phase is observed when the sample undergoes the high-temperature annealing using laser heating at 46.6GPa. This orthorhombic phase can be quenched and preserved on decompressing to ambient pressure.

Abstract:The structural phase transition of the titanomagnetite (Fe3-xTixO4) solid solution under pressures up to 60 GPa has been clarified by single-crystal and powder diffraction studies using synchrotron radiation and a diamond-anvil cell. Present Rietveld structure refinements of the solid solution prove that the prefered cation distribution is based on the crystal field preference rather than the magnetic spin ordering in the solid solution. The Ti-rich phases in 0.734 <= x <= 1.0 undergo a phase transformation from the cubic spinel of Fd (3) over barm to the tetragonal spinel structure of I4(1)/amd with c/a < 1.0. The transition is driven by a Jahn-Teller effect of Fe-IV(2+) (3d(6)) on the tetrahedral site. The c/a < 1 ratio is induced by lifting of the degeneracy of the e orbitals by raising the d(x2-y2) orbital below the energy of the d(z2) orbital. The distortion characterized by c/a < 1 is more pronounced with increasing Ti content in the Fe3-xTixO4 solid solutions and with increasing pressure. An X-ray emission experiment of Fe2TiO4 at high pressures confirms the spin transition of FeK beta from high spin to intermediate spin (IS) state. The high spin (HS)-to-low spin (LS) transition starts at 14 GPa and the IS state gradually increases with compression. The Fe-VI(2+) in the octahedral site is more prone for the HS-to-LS transition, compared with Fe2+ in the fourfold- or eightfold-coordinated site. The transition to the orthorhombic post-spinel structure with space group Cmcm has been confirmed in the whole compositional range of Fe3-xTixO4. The transition pressure decreases from 25 GPa (x = 0.0) to 15 GPa (x = 1.0) with increasing Ti content. There are two cation sites in the orthorhombic phase: M1 and M2 sites of eightfold and sixfold coordination, respectively. Fe2+ and Ti4+ are disordered on the M2 site. This structural change is accelerated at higher pressures due to the spin transition of Fe-VI(2+) in the octahedral site. This is because the ionic radius of Fe-VI(2+) becomes 20% shortened by the spin transition. At 53 GPa, the structure transforms to another high-pressure polymorph with Pmma symmetry with the ordered structure of Ti and Fe atoms in the octahedral site. This structure change results from the order-disorder transition.

Abstract:A theoretical study was carried out by first-principles calculations using plane-wave pseudopotential method to investigate the crystal structures, relative stabilities, and elastic properties of seven known titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) polymorphs. Our calculated equilibrium structural parameters of TiO 2 polymorphs are in good agreement with the experimental results. Firstly, it is worth to note that from our energy-minimized generalized gradient approximation (GGA) calculations, the four phases of TiO 2 - anatase, rutile, columbite, and baddeleyite - are seen to lie within a very close energy range (0.02eV/atom) of each other, which implies easy phase transition between them. Secondly, on the basis of enthalpy versus pressure data obtained from our GGA calculations for high-pressure forms, we demonstrate the phase transition pressure and the expected sequence of the phase transition of TiO 2 , which are in reasonable agreement with experimental observations. Finally, we calculate the elastic constants of all the TiO 2 polymorphs, and based on them, the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio are estimated. The results show that cotunnite-type TiO 2 is a potential low-compressible material.

Abstract:The oxidation state of iron in FeTiO3 under high pressure was investigated by combining x-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, x-ray-absorption spectroscopy, and density-functional theory based calculations. Our results demonstrate that the ilmenite-to-perovskite phase transition occurs above 20 GPa at room temperature and on compression two phases coexist to 40 GPa. The Fe3+/Sigma Fe ratio increases up to 16 GPa, probably attributed to the d-electron drifting of cations via the oxygen bridge in the adjacent octahedral, then decreases at higher pressure due to the ilmenite-to-perovskite phase transition accompanied by a slight decrease in iron valence state. Our ab initio calculations further show that the most significant changes in the charge distribution in FeTiO3 are associated with Ti and O.

Abstract:The structure of LiNbO3-type FeTiO3 and the oxidation state of Fe have been investigated using X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy in the diamond anvil cell up to 18 GPa at room temperature. A structural phase transition is observed at 15.7 GPa from LiNbO3-type to perovskite-type, accompanied by a volume collapse of 1.5%. LiNbO3-type FeTiO3, which is shown to contain only ferrous iron up to this pressure, and no charge transfer is observed. In addition to the c/a axial ratio that has been used to distinguish between ilmenite and LiNbO3-type FeTiO3, the hyperfine parameters (isomer shift and quadrupole splitting) provide an efficient way to discriminate between these two phases.
Pressure-Induced Reversible Hcp to Fcc Phase Transition of Ti: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:The structural evolution of Ti under high pressure up to 200 GPa at 0 K has been investigated by first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. A reversible hcp to fcc phase transition of Ti at 0 K under pressure is observed. The phase transitions hcp -> fcc and fcc -> hcp occur at P similar to 81.4 GPa and similar to 133.0 GPa, respectively. Accompanied by a reversible phase transition, the axial ratio (c/a) of hcp-Ti changes from similar to 1.65 to similar to 1.91, the c axial has negative compressibility, and a axial has positive compressibility, while the change of volume is continuous. The abrupt change of hcp-Ti structure and the electron transfer behavior similar to that of fcc-Ti under pressure may promote the phase transition of hcp-Ti to fcc-Ti. The analysis of DOS indicates the fcc structure is relatively stable compared with the hcp structure at P = 90 GPa. The high pressure limit of elastic stability for fcc-Ti is similar to 90 GPa. The weak bonding between atoms under high pressure explains the structure instability of fcc-Ti.
Equation of State of the High-Pressure Fe3o4 Phase and A New Structural Transition at 70 Gpa

Abstract:We have investigated the high-pressure behavior of Fe3O4 by in situ X-ray diffraction measurements from 11 to 103 GPa. Up to 70 GPa, the previous observed high-pressure Fe3O4 phase (h-Fe3O4) is stable, with a CaTi2O4-type structure. The compression curve shows an abnormal volume contraction at about 50 GPa, likely associated with the magnetic moment collapse observed at that pressure. Fitting the compression data up to 45 GPa to the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields a bulk modulus, K-T0 = 172 GPa, and V-0 = 277 angstrom(3), with fixed K' = 4. At a pressure between 64 and 73 GPa, a new structural transition was observed in Fe3O4, which can be attributed to a martensitic transformation as described by Yamanaka et al. (2008) for post-spinel structural transition. The diffraction data can be best fitted with a Pnma space group. No breakdown of Fe3O4 was observed up to at least 103 GPa. The new high-pressure polymorph is about 6% denser than the h-Fe3O4 phase at 75 GPa.

Abstract:The pressure-induced tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition of PbTiO3 is investigated in the pressure range of −5 to 35GPa using the density-functional theory with the local density approximation. The spontaneous polarization and spontaneous strain, calculated as the order parameters, are found to decrease abruptly at 32GPa, while the volume of the unit cell to decrease continuously, displaying a non-purely first-order character consistent with the experimental results. The structural explanation for the crossover in the order of the phase transition in PbTiO3 (from first to second order) is generally discussed in terms of the bonding structure.

Abstract:Polycrystalline TiTa2O7 was synthesized directly by solid-state reaction methods. The structures were determined by using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The high-pressure Raman and UV-vis absorption spectra of TiTa2O7 were obtained up to 25 GPa in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) at room temperature. The Raman scattering results reveal that a pressure-induced amorphization occurs above 10.5 GPa. An inflection point was also observed at 11 GPa in the pressure-dependent bandgap energy spectra, which agrees well with the amorphization point found in Raman spectra. The temperature-dependent Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of TiTa2O7 were also measured. The PL mechanism for TiTa2O7 was studied. It is worth noting that the Raman vibrations attributing to the bending vibration of the Ta (Ti)-O octahedron exhibit anomalous frequency shifts in both the high-pressure and temperature-dependent Raman spectra.

Abstract:Pressure-induced phase transitions of multiferroic BiFeO3 have been investigated using synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction with diamond anvil cell technique at room temperature. Present experimental data clearly show that rhombohedral (R3c) phase of BiFeO3 first transforms to monoclinic (C2/m) phase at 7 GPa, then to orthorhombic (Prima) phase at 11 GPa, which is consistent with recent theoretical ab initio calculation. However, we observe another peak at 2 theta=7 degrees in the pressure range of 5-7 GPa that has not been reported previously. Further analysis reveals that this reflection peak is attributed to the orthorhombic (Pbam) phase, indicating the coexistance of monoclinic phase with orthorhombic phase in low pressure range.
High-pressure x-ray diffraction study of SrMoO4 and pressure-induced structural changes

Abstract:SrMoO4 was studied under compression up to 25 GPa by angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction. A phase transition was observed from the scheelite-structured ambient phase to a monoclinic fergusonite phase at 12.2(9) GPa with cell parameters a = 5.265(9) A, b = 11.191(9) A, c = 5.195 (5) A, and beta = 90.9, Z = 4 at 13.1 GPa. There is no significant volume collapse at the phase transition. No additional phase transitions were observed and on release of pressure the initial phase is recovered, implying that the observed structural modifications are reversible. The reported transition appeared to be a ferroelastic second-order transformation producing a structure that is a monoclinic distortion of the low-pressure phase and was previously observed in compounds isostructural to SrMoO4. A possible mechanism for the transition is proposed and its character is discussed in terms of the present data and the Landau theory. Finally, the EOS is reported and the anisotropic compressibility of the studied crystal is discussed in terms of the compression of the Sr-O and Mo-O bonds.

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of PbMoO4 has been studied by in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with a diamond anvil cell (DAC) up to approximate to 38GPa. At room temperature, phase transitions of PbMoO4 from the scheelite structure to the wolframite structure and then to amorphization are detected at approximate to 8.3 and approximate to 35GPa, respectively. Pressure-volume relationships of PbMoO4 are described by the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state, giving V-0=355.8(3)angstrom(3), K-0=73(4)GPa, K-0=5(1) (third order) for the scheelite-structured phase and V-0=166(1)angstrom(3), K-0=85(4)GPa, K-0=4 (fixed) (second order) for the wolframite-structured phase. When PbMoO4 undergoes the high-temperature annealing treatment at approximate to 17.5GPa, it will dissociate into assembly of the PbO (Pbcm and Z=4) and PbMo2O7 (P2(1)/c and Z=4).
High pressure antiferrodistortive phase transition in mixed crystals of EuTiO3 and SrTiO3

Abstract:We report a detailed high pressure study on Eu1−xSrxTiO3 polycrystalline samples using synchrotron x-ray diffraction. We have observed a second-order antiferrodistortive phase transition for all doping levels which corresponds to the transition that has been previously explored as a function of temperature. The analysis of the compression mechanism by calculating the lattice parameters, spontaneous strains and tilt angles of the TiO6 octahedra leads to a high pressure phase diagram for Eu1−xSrxTiO3.
