Abstract:High pressure in situ differential thermal analysis (DTA) was applied to study phase transitions of N0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) up to 5 GPa. DTA analysis at room temperature with pressure as the variable indicated NBT samples have two pressure induced phase transformations at about 0.7 GPa and 2.5 GPa respectively. Below 0.7 GPa, two temperature induced phase transitions could be observed at around 220 degrees C and 520 degrees C as it was reported at ambient pressure. But under a pressure higher than 0.7 GPa, these two temperature induced phase transitions would not happen. In situ electrical resistance measurements showed that the resistance of NBT changes smoothly, and the tendency is similar to that of electrical insulators like pyrophyllite. We suggest that the pressure induced phase transitions at 0.7 GPa and 2.5 GPa are both insulator to insulator phase transitions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Phase transitions of both α-BiNbO4 and β-BiNbO4 were investigated under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) (0–5GPa and 300–1800°C, respectively) using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS). The stable regimes for the BiNbO4 phases were also determined. Experiments showed that both α-BiNbO4 and β-BiNbO4 could convert to a new high pressure phase HP-BiNbO4 above 3GPa, and the transition temperatures decreased with increasing pressures. Below 3GPa, β-BiNbO4 keeps stable up to 1800°C, while α-BiNbO4 converts to β-BiNbO4 when temperature is higher than 1150°C. By heating the metastable HP-BiNbO4 phase at room pressure, HP-BiNbO4 converts to α-BiNbO4 at 600°C. Above 1150°C, HP-BiNbO4 would transform to β-BiNbO4. Phase relationships of Bi2O3, Nb2O5, α-BiNbO4, β-BiNbO4 and HP-BiNbO4 were also summarized.

Abstract:We report a detailed first-principles calculation to investigate the structures, elastic constants, and phase transition of Ti. The axial ratios of both alpha-Ti and omega-Ti are nearly constant under hydrostatic compression, which confirms the latest experimental results. From the high pressure elastic constants, we find that the alpha-Ti is unstable when the applied pressures are larger than 24.2 GPa, but the omega-Ti is mechanically stable at all range of calculated pressure. The calculated phonon dispersion curves agree well with experiments. Under compression, we captured a large softening around Gamma point of alpha-Ti. When the pressure is raised to 35.9 GPa, the frequencies around the Gamma point along Gamma-M-K and Gamma-A in transverse acoustical branches become imaginary, indicating a structural instability. Within quasiharmonic approximation, we obtained the full phase diagram and accurate thermal equations of state of Ti. The phase transition omega-Ti ->alpha-Ti ->beta-Ti at zero pressure occurs at 146 K and 1143 K, respectively. The predicted triple point is at 9.78 GPa, 931 K, which is close to the experimental data. In Situ Phase Transition Study of Nano- and Coarse-Grained Tio(2) under High Pressure/Temperature Conditions

Abstract:A comparative phase transition study of nanocrystalline and micro-TiO(2) has been conducted under high pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions using energy-dispersive synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD). Our study reveals that on compression at room temperature, the micro-tetragonal anatase-type TiO(2) started to transform to the orthorhombic columbite-type TiO(2) near 1.6 GPa. In contrast, we did not observe this phase transition in nano-anatase at pressures of up to 8.5 GPa. At 8.5 GPa, by applying moderate heat, both samples were transformed completely to columbite-type TiO(2) almost simultaneously, indicating that heat treatment could significantly expedite this phase transition. These columbite-type TiO(2) phases were quenchable because after cooling them to room temperature and decompressing them to 2.0 GPa, the XRD patterns displayed no changes in comparison with those collected at 8.6 GPa and 1270 K. At 2 GPa, we heated the specimens again, and the rutile-type TiO(2) started to emerge around 970 K. This phase was also quenchable after cooling and releasing pressure to ambient conditions. The grain size effects on the phase transition were discussed based on the kinetics mechanism. This study should be of considerable interest to the fields of materials science and condensed matter.

Abstract:The Raman and synchrotron angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction studies have been performed on NaBi(WO4)2 under high pressure up to 30.7 and 36.2GPa, respectively, at room temperature. With pressure increases to ∼7.0GPa, the structure of NaBi(WO4)2 begins to transform from tetragonal (I41/a) into monoclinic (P2/m), and the phase transition completes around 13GPa. With pressure higher than 29.0GPa, the NaBi(WO4)2 turns into amorphous state. The random arrangement of Na+ and Bi3+ in short-range ordered scheelite NaBi(WO4)2 results in the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition, which is different from that observed in AWO4 tungstates and AMoO4 molybdates (A=Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Eu, Cd).

Abstract:We studied the temperature and pressure structural stability of 5 nm BaTiO3 particles by using high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, high pressure Raman spectroscopy, and high pressure impedance technique. A coexistence of the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases is observed in 5 nm Barium titanate BaTiO3 particles with weight fractions 67(6.6)% and 33(8.0)% at ambient condition, respectively. In the temperature range from −123 °C to 177 °C, the phase boundaries of 5 nm BaTiO3 are diffusive and several phases coexist. Pressure dependent Raman spectra of 5 nm BaTiO3 indicates that there exist two phase transitions: the first is at 7.5 GPa when the coexisting phases of orthorhombic and tetragonal undergoes transition to tetragonal phase; the second is around 17.3 GPa when the tetragonal transforms to cubic phase. Observed transitions were confirmed by the high pressure impedance property measurement.

Abstract:Polycrystalline TiTa2O7 was synthesized directly by solid-state reaction methods. The structures were determined by using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The high-pressure Raman and UV-vis absorption spectra of TiTa2O7 were obtained up to 25 GPa in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) at room temperature. The Raman scattering results reveal that a pressure-induced amorphization occurs above 10.5 GPa. An inflection point was also observed at 11 GPa in the pressure-dependent bandgap energy spectra, which agrees well with the amorphization point found in Raman spectra. The temperature-dependent Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of TiTa2O7 were also measured. The PL mechanism for TiTa2O7 was studied. It is worth noting that the Raman vibrations attributing to the bending vibration of the Ta (Ti)-O octahedron exhibit anomalous frequency shifts in both the high-pressure and temperature-dependent Raman spectra.

Abstract:The pressure-induced tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition of PbTiO3 is investigated in the pressure range of −5 to 35GPa using the density-functional theory with the local density approximation. The spontaneous polarization and spontaneous strain, calculated as the order parameters, are found to decrease abruptly at 32GPa, while the volume of the unit cell to decrease continuously, displaying a non-purely first-order character consistent with the experimental results. The structural explanation for the crossover in the order of the phase transition in PbTiO3 (from first to second order) is generally discussed in terms of the bonding structure.

Abstract:The pressure-induced structural changes in the perovskite-type (ABO 3 ) ferroelectric solid solution (1-x)Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 -xBaTiO 3 (NBT-xBT) at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) ( x MPB = 0.048 ) have been analyzed up to 12.3 GPa by single-crystal x-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation. A pressure-induced phase transition takes place between 4.4 and 5.0 GPa, where the pseudocubic low-pressure phase transforms into an orthorhombic high-pressure phase with space group Pnma. The high-pressure phase is comprised of mixed BO 6 tilts and anti-polar A-cation displacements, without exhibiting coherent off-centered shifts of the B-site Ti 4 + cations that can be detected by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Our results reveal that at ambient pressure and room temperature the NBT- x MPB BT structure possesses anti-phase BO 6 tilts with a relatively large correlation length and the same type of polar distortions as those present in pure NBT, but with strongly violated correlation length due to Ba 2 + -induced local elastic-stress fields. For x MPB the effect of Ba on the mesoscopic-scale structure is compensated by a mild external pressure of only 0.7 GPa, resulting in structural features resembling those of pure NBT at ambient conditions.

Abstract:High-pressure Raman scattering and angle dispersive synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies have been carried out on magnesium tantalate (MgTa2O6) up to 41 GPa at room temperature. A pressure-induced phase transition at pressures above 10 GPa accompanied by softening of the internal ν11 (Eg) modes has been observed. Another phase transition took place at 20.2 GPa, which indicates that the edge shared TaO6 octahedra are distorted. The equation of state for MgTa2O6 in low pressure phase I was obtained by the second-order Birch–Murnaghan method, yielding a zero-pressure bulk modulus B0 of 205.8 ± 8.4 GPa. The pressure dependencies of the lattice vibration mode were extracted, and it is suggested that the instability of the trirutile structure at high pressure is related to the strong deformation of the TaO6 octahedra. Decompression measurements suggest that the pressure-induced transformation is irreversible.

Abstract:The crystal structure and electric properties of BaTiO3 nanocrystals are studied by in situ high-pressure synchrotron radiation x-ray powder diffraction. The phase transition takes place not only in the samples of BaTiO3 14 nanocrystals that are tetragonal phase with grain sizes more than 100 nm, but also in the samples of BaTiO3 nanocrystals that are cubic phase with grain sizes less than 100 nm. The pressures of phase transition are found to increase with decrease of the grain size from about 4 to 10 GPa, for crystallites ranging from 200 to 10,nm in radius. The bulk moduli are calculated according to Birch-Murnaghan state equation before and after the phase transition.

Abstract:The structural evolution of Ti under high pressure up to 200 GPa at 0 K has been investigated by first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. A reversible hcp to fcc phase transition of Ti at 0 K under pressure is observed. The phase transitions hcp -> fcc and fcc -> hcp occur at P similar to 81.4 GPa and similar to 133.0 GPa, respectively. Accompanied by a reversible phase transition, the axial ratio (c/a) of hcp-Ti changes from similar to 1.65 to similar to 1.91, the c axial has negative compressibility, and a axial has positive compressibility, while the change of volume is continuous. The abrupt change of hcp-Ti structure and the electron transfer behavior similar to that of fcc-Ti under pressure may promote the phase transition of hcp-Ti to fcc-Ti. The analysis of DOS indicates the fcc structure is relatively stable compared with the hcp structure at P = 90 GPa. The high pressure limit of elastic stability for fcc-Ti is similar to 90 GPa. The weak bonding between atoms under high pressure explains the structure instability of fcc-Ti.

Abstract:Using in situ high-pressure x-ray diffraction and ab initio techniques, a high-pressure structure of LiTaO3 has been determined to be an orthorhombic phase with the space group Pnma. At ambient temperature, the transition pressure from the R3c phase (the ordinary phase at ambient pressure and temperature) to the Pnma phase is about 33.0 GPa and the phase transition is reversible. This phase transition can be reproduced qualitatively by ab initio calculations, but with a lower transition pressure of 19.9 GPa. The equation of state of LiTaO3 is also reported.

Abstract:A theoretical study was carried out by first-principles calculations using plane-wave pseudopotential method to investigate the crystal structures, relative stabilities, and elastic properties of seven known titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) polymorphs. Our calculated equilibrium structural parameters of TiO 2 polymorphs are in good agreement with the experimental results. Firstly, it is worth to note that from our energy-minimized generalized gradient approximation (GGA) calculations, the four phases of TiO 2 - anatase, rutile, columbite, and baddeleyite - are seen to lie within a very close energy range (0.02eV/atom) of each other, which implies easy phase transition between them. Secondly, on the basis of enthalpy versus pressure data obtained from our GGA calculations for high-pressure forms, we demonstrate the phase transition pressure and the expected sequence of the phase transition of TiO 2 , which are in reasonable agreement with experimental observations. Finally, we calculate the elastic constants of all the TiO 2 polymorphs, and based on them, the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio are estimated. The results show that cotunnite-type TiO 2 is a potential low-compressible material.

Abstract:The structure of LiNbO3-type FeTiO3 and the oxidation state of Fe have been investigated using X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy in the diamond anvil cell up to 18 GPa at room temperature. A structural phase transition is observed at 15.7 GPa from LiNbO3-type to perovskite-type, accompanied by a volume collapse of 1.5%. LiNbO3-type FeTiO3, which is shown to contain only ferrous iron up to this pressure, and no charge transfer is observed. In addition to the c/a axial ratio that has been used to distinguish between ilmenite and LiNbO3-type FeTiO3, the hyperfine parameters (isomer shift and quadrupole splitting) provide an efficient way to discriminate between these two phases.

Abstract:The phase relation of tetragonal and cubic PbTiO3 and their unit-cell parameters have been determined by synchrotron x-ray diffraction at pressures up to 7.8 GPa and temperatures up to 1074 K with a cubic anvil apparatus. From these measurements, a pressure-temperature phase boundary between the tetragonal and cubic phases has been established. With increasing temperature or pressure, the c/a ratio of the ferroelectric, tetragonal PbTiO3 becomes closer to unity, suggesting that both heating and compression favor the paraelectric, cubic structure. Using a modified high-T Birch-Murnaghan equation of state and a thermal-pressure approach, we have derived the thermoelastic parameters of tetragonal and cubic PbTiO3, including the ambient bulk modulus K0, temperature derivative of bulk modulus at constant pressure, volumetric thermal expansivity, pressure derivative of thermal expansion, and temperature derivative of bulk modulus at constant volume. Our obtained K0 value for tetragonal PbTiO3 is consistent with previously reported results, while that for cubic PbTiO3 is smaller than earlier results probably due to differences in the experimental techniques used (cubic anvil apparatus versus diamond anvil cell) and related stress conditions of the samples. All other thermoelastic parameters for both tetragonal and cubic PbTiO3 have been determined for the first time. Compared with previous high-temperature data at atmospheric pressure, our P-V-T dataset for tetragonal PbTiO3 infers a pressure-induced crossover in volumetric thermal expansion from negative to positive between 0 and 1 GPa, an phenomenon that is of fundamentally interest and practically important.

Abstract:We explore the crystalline structures for Ti3B4 in the 0–200 GPa pressure range via first-principles calculations based on density functional theory and advanced crystal structures prediction method using an evolutionary algorithm. The low-pressure-stable Immm phase of Ti3B4 gives way to a newly predicted orthorhombic phase (Pmmm) at 136 GPa. The B six-membered rings in the Immm phase transform to linked B zigzag chains in the Pmmm phase. Based on the electronic band structures, both Immm and Pmmm are metallic from 1 atm to 200 GPa; pressure-induced charge transfer promotes this phase transition. The simulated Vickers hardness values of Immm and Pmmm at ambient pressure are 41.5 and 34.9 GPa, respectively. The hardness of the Immm phase reduces with pressure while the opposite trend is observed for the Pmmm phase. These findings on the pressure-dependent properties of Ti3B4 yield insights into the intriguing high-pressure behaviors of the titanium-boron system.

Abstract:The pressure dependence of electrical resistance of perovskite SrTiO3 has been studied by in situ impedance measurement in diamond anvil cell up to 31 GPa at room temperature. Two discontinuous changes in resistance were observed at about 9.8 and 21 GPa, which are coincident with the pressure‐induced phase transitions from cubic phase to tetragonal phase and then to orthorhombic phase, respectively. High‐pressure angle dispersive X‐ray diffraction experiments on SrTiO3 powders have also been performed up to 35 GPa. It was found that a structure phase transition from cubic to tetragonal phase begins to take place at about 6.49 GPa but clear indication for a further transition to an orthorhombic phase at higher pressure up to 35 GPa is hardly seen in our X‐ray diffraction data.

Abstract:High pressure Raman spectra have been measured on 20 nm BaTiO 3 ceramic from atmospheric pressure to 36.7 GPa. It was found that most of tetragonal phase has transformed to orthorhombic phase at about 10.9 GPa, and a new phase appeared at about 19.8 GPa. Raman modes still persisted up to 36.7 GPa. The phase transition was reversible.
