Abstract:High pressure in situ differential thermal analysis (DTA) was applied to study phase transitions of N0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) up to 5 GPa. DTA analysis at room temperature with pressure as the variable indicated NBT samples have two pressure induced phase transformations at about 0.7 GPa and 2.5 GPa respectively. Below 0.7 GPa, two temperature induced phase transitions could be observed at around 220 degrees C and 520 degrees C as it was reported at ambient pressure. But under a pressure higher than 0.7 GPa, these two temperature induced phase transitions would not happen. In situ electrical resistance measurements showed that the resistance of NBT changes smoothly, and the tendency is similar to that of electrical insulators like pyrophyllite. We suggest that the pressure induced phase transitions at 0.7 GPa and 2.5 GPa are both insulator to insulator phase transitions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Phase transitions of both α-BiNbO4 and β-BiNbO4 were investigated under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) (0–5GPa and 300–1800°C, respectively) using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS). The stable regimes for the BiNbO4 phases were also determined. Experiments showed that both α-BiNbO4 and β-BiNbO4 could convert to a new high pressure phase HP-BiNbO4 above 3GPa, and the transition temperatures decreased with increasing pressures. Below 3GPa, β-BiNbO4 keeps stable up to 1800°C, while α-BiNbO4 converts to β-BiNbO4 when temperature is higher than 1150°C. By heating the metastable HP-BiNbO4 phase at room pressure, HP-BiNbO4 converts to α-BiNbO4 at 600°C. Above 1150°C, HP-BiNbO4 would transform to β-BiNbO4. Phase relationships of Bi2O3, Nb2O5, α-BiNbO4, β-BiNbO4 and HP-BiNbO4 were also summarized.

Abstract:We combine high-pressure x-ray diffraction, high-pressure Raman scattering, and optical microscopy to investigate a series of (1 - x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-xPbTiO(3) (PMN-xPT) solid solutions (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.33, 0.35, 0.37, 0.4) in diamond anvil cells up to 20 GPa at 300 K. The Raman spectra show a peak centered at 380 cm(-1) starting above 6 GPa for all samples, in agreement with previous observations. X-ray diffraction measurements are consistent with this spectral change indicating a structural phase transition; we find that the triplet at the pseudocubic (220) Bragg peak merges into a doublet above 6 GPa. Our results indicate that the morphotropic phase boundary region (x = 0.33 - 0.37) with the presence of monoclinic symmetry persists up to 7 GPa. The pressure dependence of ferroelectric domains in PMN-0.32PT single crystals was observed using a polarizing optical microscope. The domain wall density decreases with pressure and the domains disappear at a modest pressure of 3 GPa. We propose a pressure-composition phase diagram for PMN-xPT solid solutions. Structural transformations and physical properties of (1 - x) Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 - x BaTiO3 solid solutions near a morphotropic phase boundary

Abstract:Piezoelectric and other physical properties are significantly enhanced at (or near) a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in ferroelectrics. MPB materials have attracted significant attention owing to both fundamental physics as well as the possibility of well-regulated energy and information storage devices which are dominated by lead (Pb)-based materials. Here, we report the crystal structure, Raman spectra, dielectric constant and polarization near the MPB of lead free (1 - x) Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 - x BaTiO3 (0.00 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.10) solid-solution, prepared by sol-gel auto combustion technique and sintered by microwave sintering technique. With the addition of BaTiO3 into Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3, it induces a structural phase transition from R3c (a single phase) to R3c + P4mm (a dual phase) close to x = 0.06 and 0.07 and transform to a high symmetry tetragonal phase P4mm at higher compositions (x = 0.08 to 0.10) as evident from our x-ray Rietveld refinement and Raman spectroscopic results. We perform first-principles calculations based on density functional theory that confirm a structural transition from a rhombohedral to a tetragonal phase under increasing x. In the prepared solid solution, an anomalous enhancement of remnant polarization ([Formula: see text]) was observed for x = 0.06 and 0.07, which has been explained based on the existence of the MPB. On the other hand, the value of coercive field [Formula: see text] was found to be decreased linearly from x = 0.00 to 0.06; it is constant for higher compositions. Further details of the ferroelectric properties on the electric field poled samples have been studied and compared with the as-grown (unpoled) samples.

Abstract:High-pressure Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction studies on manganese niobate (MnNb2O6) have been carried out in a diamond anvil cell at room temperature up to 41 GPa. A pressure-induced phase transition was observed at 12 GPa accompanied by the softening of two internal vibration modes v(10)(B-2g) and v(8)(A(g)). Disappearing of most Raman vibration peaks under high pressure reveals that the NbO6 octahedra distort heavily through the transition; this is evidenced by the X-ray diffraction results, but the octahedral units still exist, as the internal Nb-O strengthening vibration is observable even at the highest pressure in this study. The equation of state for MnNb2O6 in low pressure phase I was obtained with third-order Birch-Murnaghan method, yielding a zero-pressure bulk modulus B-0 and its pressure derivative B-0' of 154.4 +/- 3.5 GPa and 4.1, respectively. The volume dependencies of the optical lattice mode frequencies and their respective Griineisen parameters were extracted; it is suggested that the instability of the columbite orthorhombic structure at high pressure is related to the strong deformation of the NbO6 octahedra. Decompression measurements suggest that the pressure-induced transformation is partly reversible.

Abstract:Bismuth sodium titanate–barium titanate [(1−x)(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-xBaTiO3, NBT-100xBT] is one of the most well studied lead-free piezoelectric materials due in large part to the high field-induced strain attainable in compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary (x = 0.06). The BaTiO3-rich side of the phase diagram, however, has not yet been as comprehensively studied, although it might be important for piezoelectric and positive temperature coefficient ceramic applications. In this work, we present a thorough study of BaTiO3-rich NBT-100xBT by ferroelastic measurements, dielectric permittivity, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. We show that the high-temperature mechanical behavior, i.e., above the Curie temperature, TC, is influenced by local disorder, which appears also in pure BT. On the other hand, in NBT-100xBT (x < 1.0), lattice distortion, i.e., tetragonality, increases, and this impacts both the mechanical and dielectric properties. This increase in lattice distortion upon chemical substitution is counterintuitive by merely reasoning on the ionic size, and is due to the change in the A-O bond character induced by the Bi3+ electron lone pair, as indicated by Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:The Raman and synchrotron angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction studies have been performed on NaBi(WO4)2 under high pressure up to 30.7 and 36.2GPa, respectively, at room temperature. With pressure increases to ∼7.0GPa, the structure of NaBi(WO4)2 begins to transform from tetragonal (I41/a) into monoclinic (P2/m), and the phase transition completes around 13GPa. With pressure higher than 29.0GPa, the NaBi(WO4)2 turns into amorphous state. The random arrangement of Na+ and Bi3+ in short-range ordered scheelite NaBi(WO4)2 results in the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition, which is different from that observed in AWO4 tungstates and AMoO4 molybdates (A=Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Eu, Cd).

Abstract:We studied the temperature and pressure structural stability of 5 nm BaTiO3 particles by using high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, high pressure Raman spectroscopy, and high pressure impedance technique. A coexistence of the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases is observed in 5 nm Barium titanate BaTiO3 particles with weight fractions 67(6.6)% and 33(8.0)% at ambient condition, respectively. In the temperature range from −123 °C to 177 °C, the phase boundaries of 5 nm BaTiO3 are diffusive and several phases coexist. Pressure dependent Raman spectra of 5 nm BaTiO3 indicates that there exist two phase transitions: the first is at 7.5 GPa when the coexisting phases of orthorhombic and tetragonal undergoes transition to tetragonal phase; the second is around 17.3 GPa when the tetragonal transforms to cubic phase. Observed transitions were confirmed by the high pressure impedance property measurement.

Abstract:Pure NaNbO3 has an antiferroelectric phase at ambient pressure. The structural behaviour of the chemically engineered ferroelectric phase of sodium niobate, NNBT05: [(0.95) NaNbO3-(0.05) BaTiO3], under high-pressure has been studied using Raman scattering and angle-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques. At pressure > 1 GPa, noticeable changes in the Raman spectra can be seen in the low wavenumber modes (150–300 cm−1). Large changes in the positions and intensities of the Raman bands as a function of pressure provide evidence for structural phase transition. The results indicate significant changes in the bond-lengths and the orientation of the NbO6 octahedra at ~1 GPa, and a transition to the paraelectric phase at ~5 GPa, which are at lower pressures than previously found in pure NaNbO3. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern shows an appreciable change in the peak profile in terms of position and width on increasing pressure. The pressure dependences of the structural parameters show that the response of the lattice parameters to pressure is strongly anisotropic. By fitting the pressure–volume data using the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state, the isothermal bulk modulus was estimated. The experimental results suggest that on doping BaTiO3 in NaNbO3, the bulk modulus increases. The bulk modulus of NNBT05 has been estimated to be 164.5 GPa, which is fairly close to 157.5 GPa, as previously observed in NaNbO3.

Abstract:(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 (BNT) system ceramics are considered to be an excellent candidate for leadfree piezoelectric ceramics. In this paper, (1–x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-xBaTiO3 (x = 0.03 ~ 0.10) was synthesized by conventional mixed-oxide technique. The powders were calcined at 950oC for 2 h and the pressed disks were sintered at 1145oC for 2 h in air atmosphere. The phase structure was investigated by X-ray diffraction technique (XRD). It is revealed that the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) lies in a narrow composition range of x=0.05–0.08 but not a unique composition (x = 0.055 or 0.06) as shown before [1-4]. The microstructures of the ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopic. In addition, the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of this system were also investigated. It was indicated that both the piezoelectric and dielectric properties are better with the compositions lie near the tetragonal phase within the MPB than that whose compositions lie near the rhombohedral phase.

Abstract:The high-pressure and high-temperature behaviors of manganotantalite Mn(Ta,Nb)(2)O-6 have been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy combined with diamond anvil cell technique, as well as first-principle calculations. A pressure-induced reversible phase transition of manganotantalite occurs at 9.5 GPa and room temperature, accompanied by a large volume collapse (similar to 7.0%) and drastic color change from brownish-yellow to red. The space groups of low-pressure (LP) and highpressure (HP) phases are the same (Pbcn), but the coordination numbers of Mn increase from six to eight and Ta increase from six to seven, respectively. The band gap becomes narrow from 2.37 to 1.59 eV. We determined the P-T phase diagram of manganotantalite with a positive Clapeyron slope of dP/dT = 0.0073 GPa/K. The P-V data were fitted to a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with B-0 = 149(4) GPa for the LP phase and B-0 = 188(3) GPa for the HP phase. The isothermal Gruneisen parameters were determined to be 0.23 similar to 2.03 of the LP phase and 0.59 similar to 0.86 of the HP phase for Raman modes. High-pressure behaviors of Mn(Ta,Nb)(2)O-6 indicate that this kind of material is a potential effective pressure sensor to monitor pressure change or warn pressure abnormality.
Pressure-induced phase transition in α- and β-BiNbO4

Abstract:BiNbO4 has stirred up great deal of interest due to its excellent photocatalytic activities. Besides, it possesses rich polymorphism. Here, the structure stability and structural evolution of orthorhombic α- and triclinic β-BiNbO4 were investigated via in-situ X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum up to 46.7 GPa. Upon compression, both BiNbO4 samples become unstable. α-BiNbO4 transformed to the monoclinic C2/c structure at 10.3 GPa, while β-BiNbO4 possessed one P-to-P1 isostructural phase transition around 12.7 GPa, which is the first time to identify the crystal structure of each high pressure phase. Both high pressure structures remained stable without obvious symmetry changes during compression to 46.7 GPa. In addition, both phase transitions were reversible upon decompression. These results proved insight to understand pressure-induced reversible phase transition for ABO4 compounds with polymorphism.

Abstract:The crystal structure and electric properties of BaTiO3 nanocrystals are studied by in situ high-pressure synchrotron radiation x-ray powder diffraction. The phase transition takes place not only in the samples of BaTiO3 14 nanocrystals that are tetragonal phase with grain sizes more than 100 nm, but also in the samples of BaTiO3 nanocrystals that are cubic phase with grain sizes less than 100 nm. The pressures of phase transition are found to increase with decrease of the grain size from about 4 to 10 GPa, for crystallites ranging from 200 to 10,nm in radius. The bulk moduli are calculated according to Birch-Murnaghan state equation before and after the phase transition.

Abstract:Bi2NiTiO6 compound which shows both magnetic (TM = 58 K) and ferroelectric properties (TC = 513 K) was synthesized under high pressure of 5 GPa and temperature of 1273 K. The crystal structure, as determined by X-ray powder diffraction and neutron powder diffraction, is a distorted A(B1B2)O3 type perovskite with space group Pn21a. Structural evolution of multiferroic Bi2NiTiO6 shows that there are two isostructural phase transitions at ∼2 GPa and ∼15 GPa under high pressure and at room temperature and indicates that isostructural phase transitions occurred with temperature higher than 823 K under ambient condition. All the isostructural phase transitions come from the Bi ion discontinuous shift, which identifies the phase transition at ∼15 GPa and at temperature higher than 823 K are the same. Using a modified high-T Birch-Murnaghan equation of state and a thermal-pressure approach, we have derived the thermoelastic parameters of high pressure phase Bi2NiTiO6, including the ambient bulk modulus K0, temperature derivative of bulk modulus at constant pressure, volumetric thermal expansivity, pressure derivative of thermal expansion, and temperature derivative of bulk modulus at constant volume.

Abstract:The comprehension of structural behaviors in double perovskites is crucial for their functional optimization, especially when applying external regulations. Here, to inquire about potential structures with better magnetic performance, high-pressure phase transformation in double perovskite Ba2SmBiO6 was first investigated up to 50 GPa via in situ high-pressure x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. A pressure-induced phase transition from cubic Fm-3m to orthorhombic Pnma is discovered at 4.8 GPa, accompanied by the splitting of the diffraction peaks. Above 19.8 GPa, the new phase becomes distorted as shown by the peak recombination and broadening. The variation of Raman spectra also confirms the formation and distortion of the high-pressure phase during compression, through the evolution of Bi–O stretching, Bi–O bending, octahedral rotation, and Ba-sites translation modes. The analysis of tilt angles and distortion factor evinced that the octahedral BiO6 tilting is the key factor for the phase transition occurrence. Based on the Mulliken populations analyses, the Bi–O bonds undergo a covalent-ionic-antibonding transition across the phase transition under compression. Our exploration of the phase transition mechanism guides the modulation of the magnetic and electronic properties under extreme conditions.

The role of local non-tetragonal polar displacements in the temperature- and pressure-induced phase transitions in PbTiO3-BiMeO3 ferroelectrics

Abstract:In situ high-pressure/high-temperature Raman-scattering analyses on PbTiO , 0.92PbTiO 0.08Bi(Zn Ti )O and 0.83PbTiO 0.17Bi(Mg Ti )O single crystals reveal an intensity transfer between the fine-structure components of the A (TO) soft mode. The enhancement of the lowest-energy subpeak, which stems from intrinsic local non-tetragonal polar distortions, along with the suppression of the tetragonal A (1TO) fundamental mode with increasing pressure and temperature indicates the key role of the local polarization fluctuations in transformation processes and emphasizes the significance of the order-disorder phenomena in both the pressure- and temperature-induced phase transitions of pure PbTiO and its solid solutions with complex perovskites. Moreover, the temperature and pressure evolution of the fraction of the local non-tetragonal polar distortions is highly sensitive to the type of B-site substituent.

Abstract:(1−x)Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–x(Na0.53K0.44Li0.04)(Nb0.88Sb0.08Ta0.04)O3 (BNT–xNKLNST) with x=0–0.10 lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by a solid state method, and the structure and electrical properties were investigated in this study. It is found that a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of rhombohedral (R) and tetragonal (T) phase exists in the range of 0.03≤x≤0.05 and the structure changes to paraelectric phase when x>0.07. The samples with x=0.05 exhibit improved electrical properties owing to the formation of MPB, which are as follows: piezoelectric constant d33=120pC/N, remnant polarization Pr=39.4μC/cm2 and coercive field Ec=3.6kV/mm. These results indicate that the enhanced piezoelectric properties for BNT can be achieved by forming the coexistence of R and T phase.
