Abstract:High pressure is an important dimension for the emergent phenomena in transition metal oxides, including high-temperature superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and magnetoelectric coupling. In these multiply correlated systems, the interplay between lattice, charge, orbital, and spin is extremely susceptible to external pressure. Magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) is one of the oldest known magnetic materials and magnetic minerals, yet its high pressure behaviors are still not clear. In particular, the crystal structure of the high-pressure phase has remained contentious. Here, we investigate the pressure-induced phase transitions in Fe(3)O(4) from first-principles density-functional theory. It is revealed that the net magnetic moment, arising from two ferrimagnetically coupled sublattices in Fe(3)O(4), shows an abrupt drop when entering into the high-pressure phase but recovers finite value when the pressure is beyond 65.1 GPa. The origin lies in the redistribution of Fe 3d orbital occupation with the change of crystal field, where successive structural transitions from ambient pressure phase Fd3[combining overline]m to high pressure phase Pbcm (at 29.7 GPa) and further to Bbmm (at 65.1 GPa) are established accurately. These findings not only explain the experimental observations on the structural and magnetic properties of the highly compressed Fe(3)O(4) but also suggest the existence of highly magnetized magnetite in the Earth's lower mantle.

Abstract:The spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation within the plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory is employed to investigate the magnetism and phase transition of iron under pressure. It is found that iron has a ferromagnetic body-centered-cubic (bcc) ground state, while at high pressure (such as at the Earth's lower mantle and core pressure), the most stable phase is the nonmagnetic hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) phase. For the face-centered-cubic (fcc) iron, we find that there is an intermediate-spin state (IS) during the transformation from the high-spin state (HS) to the low-spin (LS) state under pressure. The transition pressures of the HS -> IS and the IS -> LS are about 15 GPa and 50 GPa, respectively. The magnetism can affect the properties of iron up to 72.9 GPa. From the enthalpy difference between every two phases, we find the phase transition pressures of FM-bcc -> FM-hcp, FM-bcc -> NM-hcp and NM-bcc -> NM-hcp are 14.4 GPa, 29.5 GPa and 42.7 GPa, respectively.

Abstract:Fe K-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism of magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) powders was measured with synchrotron radiation under variable pressure and temperature conditions in diamond anvil cell. The magnetic dichroism was observed to decrease discontinuously by similar to 50% between 12 and 16 GPa, independent of temperature. The magnetic transition is attributed to a high-spin to intermediate-spin transition of Fe(2+) ions in the octahedral sites and could account for previously observed structural and electrical anomalies in magnetite at this pressure range. The interpretation of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism data is supported by x-ray emission spectroscopy and theoretical cluster calculations.

Abstract:Greigite (Fe3S4), isostructural with Fe3O4 has recently attracted great scientific interests from material science to geology due to its complicated structure and electronic and magnetic configurations. Here, an investigation into the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of Fe3S4 under high pressure has been conducted by first-principle calculations based on density functional theory. The results show that a first-order phase transition of Fe3S4 would occur from the inverse spinel (SP) structure to the Cr3S4-type (CS) structure at 3.4 GPa, accompanied by a collapse of 9.7% in the volume, a redistribution of iron cations, and a half-metal to metal transition. In the CS-Fe3S4, Fe2+ located at octahedral environment firstly undergoes a transition from high-spin (HS) state to low-spin (LS) state at 8.5 GPa and Fe3+ subsequently does at 17 GPa. The Equation of State for different phases of Fe3S4 are also determined. Our results not only give some clues to explore novel materials by utilizing Fe3S4 but also shed light on the fundamental information of Fe3O4, as well as those of other SP-AB2X4 compounds.

Abstract:Using a highly stoichiometric magnetite, the pressure-induced phase transitions of Fe3O4 have been revisited here by performing Fe K-edge X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements up to P = 65 GPa at room temperature and 71 GPa at 20 K. We have observed a structural transition at around 27 GPa from magnetite to a high-pressure phase h-Fe3O4 with the loss of the net ordered magnetic moments for both temperatures. The orthorhombic CaTi2O4-type (Bbmm) structure of the high-pressure phase h-Fe3O4 has been determined by combining experimental studies and theoretical simulations of the Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra. The long-time discussed pressure induced spin crossover, and inverse to normal spinel structure transitions in Fe3O4 can be deterministically excluded from the present study up to ∼65 GPa.
Structural Distortion and Collinear-to-helical Magnetism Transition in Rutile-Type FeO2

Abstract:The recent discovery of FeO2 under high pressures has aroused great interest. With the fully anisotropic density-functional theory+U method, we present a predictive study of structural and magnetic transitions of rutile-type FeO2 after reproducing the experimental spiral wave vector in isostructural beta-MnO2. A second-order structural distortion (tetragonal to orthorhombic) involving octahedral rotation occurs at a critical pressure of 3 similar to 4 GPa. From a global search in the Brillouin zone, the ground-state spin order of rutile-type FeO2 is found to be collinear below 22 GPa and transforms to a helix at higher pressures. The phases remain insulating throughout the whole pressure range, with a change from an indirect gap in the high-spin state to a direct gap in the low-spin state. Our work extends the fundamental understanding of iron oxides and provides schemes that treat strongly correlated magnetic systems in a proper and effective way.

Abstract:The serial system Srn+1FenO2n+1(n=1,2,3…) with the FeO4 square planar motif exhibits abundant phase transitions under pressure. In this work, we investigate the pressure-induced structural, magnetic and transport transitions in Sr2FeO3 from first-principles. Our results show that the system undergoes a structural transition from Immm to Ammm when the volume decreases by 30%, together with a spin-state transition (SST) from high-spin (S = 2) to intermediate-spin (S = 1), an antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition and an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT). Besides, the IMT here is a bandwidth controlled transition, but little influenced by the SST.

Abstract:Magnetic and structure transitions of Mn 3–x Fe x O 4 solid solutions under extreme conditions are clarified by neutron time-of-flight scattering diffraction and X-ray Mössbauer measurement. The ferrimagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition temperature (100 °C) of Mn 2 FeO 4 spinel is different from the tetragonal-to-cubic structure transition temperature (180 °C). The structure transition temperature decreases with increasing pressure. The transition is not coupled with the magnetic transition. Synchrotron X-ray Mössbauer experiments have revealed the pressure effects on the distribution of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the spinel structure. Ferrimagnetic MnFe 2 O 4 and Mn 2 FeO 4 spinels show sextet spectral features with hyperfine structure elicited by internal magnetic fields. Cubic MnFe 2 O 4 spinel and tetragonal Mn 2 FeO 4 transform to high-pressure orthorhombic postspinel phase above pressures of 18.4 GPa and 14.0 GPa, respectively. The transition pressure decreases with increasing Mn content. The postspinel phase has a paramagnetic property. Mn 2 O 10 dimers of two octahedra are linked via common edge in three dimentional direction. The occupancy of Fe 2+ in the tatrahedral site is decreased with increasig pressure, indicating more oredered structure. Consequently, the inverse parameter of the spinel structure is increased with increasing pressure. The magnetic structure refinements clarify the paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic structure of MnFe 2 O 4 and Mn 2 FeO 4 spinel as a function of pressure. The magnetic moment is ordered between A and B sites with the anti-parallel distribution along the b axis. The nuclear tetragonal structure ( a N , a N , c N ) has the ferrimagnetic structure but the orthorhombic magnetic structure has the ferrimagnetic structure with the lattice constants ( a M , b M , c M ). The magnetic moment is ordered between A and B sites with the anti-parallel distribution along the b M axis.

Present Rietveld structure refinements of the solid solution prove that the prefered cation distribution is based on the crystal field preference rather than the magnetic spin ordering in the solid solution. The Ti-rich phases in 0.734 <= x <= 1.0 undergo a phase transformation from the cubic spinel of Fd (3) over barm to the tetragonal spinel structure of I4(1)/amd with c/a < 1.0. The transition is driven by a Jahn-Teller effect of Fe-IV(2+) (3d(6)) on the tetrahedral site. The c/a < 1 ratio is induced by lifting of the degeneracy of the e orbitals by raising the d(x2-y2) orbital below the energy of the d(z2) orbital. The distortion characterized by c/a < 1 is more pronounced with increasing Ti content in the Fe3-xTixO4 solid solutions and with increasing pressure. An X-ray emission experiment of Fe2TiO4 at high pressures confirms the spin transition of FeK beta from high spin to intermediate spin (IS) state. Abstract:X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy were employed to investigate structural stability of Fe2TiO4 under high pressure. Measurements were performed up to about 24GPa at room temperature using diamond anvil cell. Experimental results demonstrate that Fe2TiO4 undergoes a series of phase transitions from cubic (Fd3̄m) to tetragonal (I41/amd) at 8.7GPa, and then to orthorhombic structure (Cmcm) at 16.0GPa. The high-pressure phase (Cmcm) of Fe2TiO4 is kept on decompression to ambient pressure. In all polymorphs of Fe2TiO4, iron cations present a high-spin ferrous property without electric charge exchange with titanium cations at high pressure supported by Mössbauer evidences.

Abstract:Fe 1- x O, although chemically simple, possesses a complex structural and magnetic phase diagram. The crystal structures of Fe 1- x O and its magnetic properties at extreme conditions are still a matter of debate. Here, we performed a systematic investigation on Fe 0.94 O up to 94 GPa and 1700 K using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and synchrotron Mössbauer source spectroscopy. We observe a transition of Fe 0.94 O to the monoclinic phases above 40 GPa and at high temperatures and use the group theory analysis of the observed phases to discuss their properties and their relation to the ambient pressure phases. The Mössbauer spectra of the rhombohedral and the room temperature monoclinic phase contain a component attributed to Fe 2.5+ , caused by the electron exchange between the Fe 3+ defect and neighboring Fe 2+ atoms. Our results present a structural and magnetic transitional pressure-temperature diagram of Fe 1- x O and show the complex physicochemical properties of simple Fe 1- x O binary oxide under extreme conditions.

Fe in the octahedral site is more capable for the HS-to-LS transition, compared with Fe 34 in the four-fold or eight-fold coordinated site. 35 The transition to orthorhombic post-spinel structure of Cmcm has been confirmed in the whole 36 compositional range of Fe3-xTixO4. The transition pressure decreases from 25 GPa (x=0.0) to 15 GPa 37 (x=1.0) with increasing Ti content. Abstract:The effect of pressure on the electronic properties and crystal structure in amixed spinel ferrite Zn0.2Mg0.8Fe2O4 was studied for the first time up to 48 GPa at room temperature using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electrical transport measurements. The sample was cubic (spinel-type Fd (3) over bar 3m) at ambient pressure and underwent a pressure-induced structural transition to an orthorhombic phase (CaTi2O4-type Bbmm) at 21GPa. This structural transformation corresponded to a first-order phase transition that involved 7.5% molar volume shrinkage. The onset of the Mott insulator-metal transition (IMT) around 20 GPa was due to a spin crossover mechanism that led to the Fe3+ magnetic moment collapse. All the Raman modes disappeared at high pressures, which supported metallization. Analysis of structural and electrical transport measurements showed a simultaneous volume collapse and sharp IMT within a narrow pressure range. The orthorhombic high-pressure phase was found to have a higher conductivity than the cubic phase. The pressure dependence of the conductivity supported the metallic behavior of the high-pressure phase.

Abstract:We have investigated the high-pressure behavior of Fe3O4 by in situ X-ray diffraction measurements from 11 to 103 GPa. Up to 70 GPa, the previous observed high-pressure Fe3O4 phase (h-Fe3O4) is stable, with a CaTi2O4-type structure. The compression curve shows an abnormal volume contraction at about 50 GPa, likely associated with the magnetic moment collapse observed at that pressure. Fitting the compression data up to 45 GPa to the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields a bulk modulus, K-T0 = 172 GPa, and V-0 = 277 angstrom(3), with fixed K' = 4. At a pressure between 64 and 73 GPa, a new structural transition was observed in Fe3O4, which can be attributed to a martensitic transformation as described by Yamanaka et al. (2008) for post-spinel structural transition. The diffraction data can be best fitted with a Pnma space group. No breakdown of Fe3O4 was observed up to at least 103 GPa. The new high-pressure polymorph is about 6% denser than the h-Fe3O4 phase at 75 GPa.

Abstract:Many AB2O4 spinels transform to post-spinel structures without decomposition.Three structures of CaMn2O4 (Pmab), CaFe2O4 (Pnam) and CaTi2O4 (Bbmm) have been reported as post-spinel phases.Structure studies were conducted under high pressure using SR.CaMn2O4 transforms to CaTi2O4 type structure at about 30GPa.MnO6 octahedron is distorted by the Jahn-Teller effect induced from Mn 3+ (3d4) in the octahedral site.X-ray emission study at APS has been executed to discloses high-low spin transition of CaMn2O4 up to 100GPa.The spin transition gradually proceeds from 50GPa and then mixed spin states at 80GPa.Low-spin state is confirmed at 85GPa.A new phase is found by powder diffraction at 82 GPa.This structure (Pnam) is produced via martensic transformation by displacing atoms in every three layers perpendicular to the c-axis.Four independent sites of Mn atoms yield the different spin transition pressures.PbTiO3 tetragonal perovskite structure (P4mm) at ambient conditions transforms cubic (Pm3m) at about 12GPa, which induces the transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric.Electron density distribution analysis is performed by maximum entropy method (MEM) using single-crystal diffraction intensities up to 12GPa taken at PF and up to 35GPa by two-circle diffractometer with IP at APS. Pressure dependence of the static dipole moment is elucidated by charge density analysis.MEM provides the split atom model of Ti and oxygen atoms in the direction to the c-axis and in the cubic phase no more splitting was observed.The split is generated from the statistical distribution of atoms or domain structures.The split becomes gradually smaller with increasing pressure.This is an intrinsic phenomenon in PbTiO3.Polarization in PbTiO3 is partly canceled.

Abstract:In this study, hydrostatic pressure was introduced into BiCoO3 multiferroic material by using first‐principles calculations. As the pressure increases, we found the pressure‐tuned structural symmetry transition from tetragonal P4mm (No. 99) to cubic Pm3 ̄ m (No. 221) space group, and the magnetism changes from C‐type antiferromagnetic state to paramagnetic configuration, accompanying the transformation from high spin state with b2g2eg2a1g1b1g1 configuration in pyramidal coordination to low spin state with t2g6eg0 in octahedral field. The atomic structures, electronic structures, magnetic properties, and spin states of BiCoO3 multiferroic material under hydrostatic pressure are comprehensively investigated by using first‐principles calculation based on density functional theory. Firstly, we found the pressure‐tuned structural symmetry transition from tetragonal P4 mm (No. 99) to cubic Pm3 ̄ m (No. 221) space group. The structural transformation prompts the Co─O polyhedral coordination transfer from a CoO5 pyramidal to a CoO6 distorted octahedron. Secondly, the pressure‐induced magnetic change from C‐type antiferromagnetic state to ferromagnetic state and then to paramagnetic configuration occurred after continuous compression of the volume. Essentially, the fundamental reason for the transition of the magnetic structure lies in the change of the internal atomic structure, such as the pressure induced abrupt changes of Co─O bond length and bond angle. Meanwhile, an obvious volume collapse was observed when the pressure was applied to 51–56 GPa. Finally, as the pressure increases, the magnetism changes from C‐type antiferromagnetic state to paramagnetic configuration, accompanying the transformation from high spin state with b2g2eg2a1g1b1g1 configuration in pyramid structure to low spin state with t2g6eg0 in octahedral field. Therefore, our results demonstrate that applied hydrostatic pressure in BiCoO3 can trigger the transformation of structure, magnetism, charge, and spin state.
