Abstract:In this study, the failure modes of a blast furnace tuyere after service damage were systematically investigated. The high ambient temperature caused grain growth and hardness reduction at the front end of the tuyere. Owing to scraping by gyratory coke in the blast furnace, a perforation formed at the front end of the tuyere, causing damage. Owing to the uneven distribution of components caused by repair welding, cracks occurred in the front coating of the inner wall of the tuyere. The wear of the inner wall of the tuyere was related to the angle and depth of the coal injection gun, and the wear mechanism differed at different positions. Thus, tuyere failure is mainly attributed to the wear of the front end and inner wall. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a coating with excellent high-temperature wear resistance to protect the inner wall and the front end of tuyeres, thereby extending their service life.

Optimization Study of Annular Wear-Resistant Layer Structure for Blast Furnace Tuyere

Abstract:A new tuyere small sleeve coating structure that balances the high thermal conductivity of the copper substrate with the high wear resistance of the protective layer was developed in this paper. This structure can achieve a low-carbon blast furnace by reducing the heat loss from the tuyere. The 3D model was established via Solidworks for modeling and Ansys for numerical simulation, the temperature field of the annular wear-resistant layer structure tuyere small sleeve with different widths of the wear-resistant layer was analyzed and compared with the temperature and stress field of traditional tuyere small sleeve. The results show that the design of the annular wear-resistant layer structure of the tuyere small sleeve is more effective. The new annular wear-resistant layer structure for the tuyere small sleeve results in a decrease of 24 K in the average temperature of the wear-resistant coating. The comparison of this structure with tuyere sleeves without wear-resistant coatings shows a 16.7% reduction in heat loss, improves the wear resistance of the tuyere, providing new technological ideas for low-carbon blast furnace production. Compared with the tuyere sleeve completely covered with a wear-resistant coating, the maximum thermal stress of this structure decreased from 624.98 Mpa to 427.99 Mpa, resulting in a reduction of 31.5%, which is beneficial for the service life of the tuyere sleeve. The copper surface temperature of the new tuyere small sleeve is in a safe range when the temperature is below 2273 K.

Abstract:It is critical to reveal the change in tuyere parameters for the efficient consumption of coal particles and natural gas in the lower zone of the blast furnace. Combined with the actual size and injection conditions of the blast furnace for natural gas utilization, the three-dimensional simulation model involving the tuyere, two lances, raceway and blowpipe is built to explore the influence of the tuyere diameter, tuyere length and inclination angle of tuyere on the difference of flow, temperature, gas concentration and fuel reaction in the tuyere and raceway. The research outcomes show that the change of tuyere diameter has the most significant influence on the gas velocity in the three conditions. The high-temperature district in the computational domain increases gradually with the diameter of the tuyere. However, the result is contrary to the increase of the length and inclination angle of the tuyere. Besides, when the diameter, length and inclination angle increase, the burnout of pulverized coal has a trend of decreasing, increasing and increasing, respectively. To obtain a better fuel combustion effect, it is recommended that the diameter of the tuyere should not exceed 160 mm, the length of the tuyere should not exceed 530 mm, and the inclination angle of the tuyere should not exceed 7° under the current operating conditions.

Abstract:The characteristics of three typical hearth structures and their actual operations in our country are introduced,and suitable sump depth is analyzed and then the sump depth of some BF built in recent years and the ratio of sump depth to hearth diameter of BF are presented.Some applied monitoring technologies for hearth and filling gap technology and new lining protection technologies for hearth to be proved effectively are also presented.It is pointed out that the sump depth should be at least 20% of hearth diameter under the conditions of intensity smelting,and filling gaps by heavy oil is better than by carbon paste once gaps occur in the hearth.If a new carbon brick with TiO2 is developed,it will be beneficial for protection of lining,and can't make the coke ratio increase as the titanium ores charged into the blast furnace do.

Abstract:The main trough of a blast furnace (BF) is a main passage for hot metal and molten slag transportation from the taphole to the torpedo and the slag handling. Its appropriate working status and controlled erosion ensure a safe, stable, high-efficiency and low-cost continuous production of hot metal. In this work, the tapping process of a main trough of a BF in the east of China was numerically studied with the help of a CFD library written in C++, called OpenFOAM, based on the use of the Finite Volume Method (FVM). The results show that turbulence intensity downstream of the hot metal impact position becomes weaker and the turbulence area becomes larger in the main trough. During the tapping, thermal stress of wall refractory reaches the maximum value of 1.7 × 107 Pa at the 4 m position in the main trough. Furthermore, baffles in the main trough placed between 5.8 m and 6.2 m were found to control and reduce the impact of the turbulence on the refractory life. The metal flowrate upstream of the baffles can be decreased by 6%, and the flow velocity on the upper sidewall and bottom wall decrease by 9% and 7%, respectively, compared with the base model. By using baffles, the minimum fatigue life of the refractory in the main trough increases by 15 tappings compared with the base model, so the period between the maintenance stops can be prolonged by about 2 days.

Abstract:The life of the hearth is the main limiting link of the campaign of a blast furnace. As the equipment for holding molten iron in the furnace, the high-temperature molten iron is in direct contact with the refractory, which makes the refractory have a larger temperature increase. If the temperature gradient inside the refractory is large, it generates large thermal stress and causes the refractory to crack. Blast furnace gas and molten iron intrude into the gap, which directly causes melting erosion and other chemical erosion with carbon bricks. It aggravates the erosion degree of the furnace and seriously affects the production life of the furnace. Therefore, the furnace often occurs with different types of severe depression erosion in the late service of the blast furnace. In this study, the calculation model of the thermal fluid-solid coupling considering the molten iron flow and the solidification of molten iron was established. This calculation model was applied to study thermal stresses in the furnace with severe erosion. Based on the calculation model, the effect of blast furnace production parameters and deadman condition on thermal stresses in the furnace with severe depression erosion were analyzed, including tapping productivity, tapping temperature, cooling intensity, and deadman geometry. The research results are of great significance for prolonging the safe production life of blast furnaces.

Abstract:The damage and the residue life of a whole HP-Nb hydrogen reformer furnace tube which had serviced for 12 years were investigated by means of metallographic examination,ambient temperature and high temperature uniaxial tensile tests,creep rupture tests and damage mechanics analysis.The results showed that different parts of the tube at different heights had different degrees of damage and different residue life due to different service temperatures.Based on these research results,local maintenance of the reformer tube was recommended.

Abstract:Reformer furnace hot outlet manifold is a critical component in aromatic plants. Unfortunately, a hot outlet manifold used in Nanjing YPC Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd. failed after it has been in service for only 2years. In the present paper, a failure analysis of the failed hot outlet manifold was performed by careful visual observation, mechanical properties tests, chemical content examination, microstructural analysis and microchemical analysis of fine precipitates. Finite element method (FEM) considering creep effect was also employed to define the evolution of critical region. Experimental results showed that the failure was a combination of overheating and high stress concentration. Exposing it to excessive temperatures at high stress significantly accelerated the creep rate, thus, leading to the premature failure. FEM analysis showed that hoop stress generated by the work inner pressure was the main reason leading to the crack initiated and propagated along axial direction of the manifold. Moreover, sequence of the failure region achieved by the simulation correlated well with the experimental analysis. To prevent the failure, better control of operating temperature was strongly recommended.

Abstract:Designs of European blast furnace hearth are introduced,including the design of sump depth,cooling system and refractory lining.The paper further states that the refractory material should be matched with the sump depth,and cites some cases of hearth lining design.The cooling technologies used in bosh,belly and stack lower part of European blast furnaces,and integrated lining design of copper stave coupled with graphite/semi-graphite in Tata Corus IJmuiden are presented.The available long-life experiences can be drawn from European blast furnaces.

Abstract:In this study, high temperature low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests at 550 degrees C were conducted on LPBF (Laser powder bed fusion) 316L with three different surface states, including the As-built surface (AB), fill contour (FC) manufacturing surface, and the surface combining FC and electropolishing (FC + EP). The effect of surface treatment on the high temperature LCF performance of LPBF 316L was investigated. Experimental results showed that the FC + EP surface treatment had the most significant effect on enhancing life. The difference in enhancing the fatigue life behavior was mainly attributed to the various crack initiation mechanisms with different surface states. The cracks on the surfaces of AB and FC mostly originate from the powder adhesion areas and the boundaries of the melt pool, while FC + EP surface treatment weaken the damage induced by powder adhesion. Furthermore, a parameter representing the fatigue crack propagation driving force that considers the surface condition has been defined, and a proposed life prediction model can provide guidance for surface modification and post-treatment of additive manufacturing materials as well as other metal materials.

Abstract:Comprehensive state analysis and life evaluation of the main components of reformer furnace run over service period by EPMA, microstructure and high temperature rupture property. The results show that element distribution and microstructure of reformer pipe, riser pipe, low collecting pipe and socket is normal and the remaining life is longer. The material of furnace pipe for the HK40 are able to meet the process requirement, but the wall thickness of reformer pipe is too large, affecting the thermal efficiency and the inner diameter is small to limit the catalyst and flow. It is good proposal to production enterprises that higher level of material such as ZG50Ni35Cr25NbM is selected to reduce the wall thickness properly, expand the diameter and improve efficiency. Similarly, it can also be appropriate for the riser pipe to choose a lower grade material and reduce the wall thickness and save cost.

Abstract:The steel industry is an important foundation of the national economy and the livelihood of the people, producing a large amount of carbon dioxide gas, accounting for about 70% of the carbon dioxide gas generated in the steel industry, which occurs during the ironmaking process. Therefore, the key technology to reduce the pollution and improve competitiveness is to increase the stability of blast furnace production and the quality of hot metal. Since the operation requirements for temperature control in the vanadium-titanium blast furnace are dramatically different compared to the traditional ones due to the low fluidity of vanadium-titanium slag, maintaining the required hot metal temperature within a narrow range with smaller fluctuations is essential. In addition, the adjustment parameters of the lower part have a significant influence on the tuyere combustion flame temperature during the daily operation of blast furnaces. At present, there is no relevant research on the online detection and analysis of vanadium-titanium blast furnace tuyere combustion flame temperature. In this study, the temperature of four tuyeres in a 500 m3 vanadium and titanium blast furnace at Jianlong Steel was detected by an online detection system. The tuyere combustion flame temperature was then calculated using colorimetric temperature measuring methodology at various times and at four distinct locations. After that, the calibration analyses, imaging parameter and the temperature tendencies in different directions of the blast furnace were investigated. This study not only offers new methods for understanding the regularity of operation and increasing the degree of visualization in vanadium and titanium smelting blast furnaces but also provides technical support for intelligent and low-carbon operation in blast furnaces.

The creep, thermal fatigue, thermal oxidation, carburization, corrosion and other phenomena may occur in harsh high temperature environments during service of furnace pipe. These factors make the properties degrade and life time short during all times of service. It will have significant economic losses if the rupture facture accident occurs suddenly. Prolonging Campaign Life of Blast Furnace Trough by Water Cooling

Abstract:A long campaign life of the trough of the blast furnace (BF) is important for improving the BF operation efficiency, reducing the cost of blast furnace ironmaking, and bettering the working conditions of the casting yard. In this paper, a water cooling device was designed for the trough of a BF with a volume of 630 m3. The effect of water cooling on lengthening the unit campaign life of the trough was investigated using industrial tests, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis. Results showed that by using water cooling, the throughput of the trough in a unit campaign was increased by 40,000 tons, and its unit campaign life was increased by 34 days. During a unit campaign cycle, the influence of the water cooling device on the temperature distribution in refractory materials gradually developed from the low-temperature zone to the high-temperature zone, and the expansion of the high-temperature zone was suppressed. Therefore, the water cooling device inhibited the dissolution of refractory materials and retarded the chemical erosion from the molten slag and the atmosphere.

Abstract:The safety and longevity of key blast furnace (BF) equipment determine the stable and low-carbon production of iron. This paper presents an analysis of the heat transfer characteristics of these components and the uneven distribution of cooling water in parallel pipes based on hydrodynamic principles, discusses the feasible methods for the improvement of BF cooling intensity, and reviews the preparation process, performance, and damage characteristics of three key equipment pieces: coolers, tuyeres, and hearth refractories. Furthermoere, to attain better control of these critical components under high-temperature working conditions, we propose the application of optimized technologies, such as BF operation and maintenance technology, self-repair technology, and full-lifecycle management technology. Finally, we propose further researches on safety assessments and predictions for key BF equipment under new operating conditions.

Abstract:The blast furnace (BF) hearth is critical for determining the life of a BF. Irreversibly eroded hearths can be caused by high-temperature molten iron erosion, alkali metal corrosion, and thermal stress. When serious depression erosion occurs in the hearth, furnace protection measures can prevent the erosion from expanding and ensure the safe operation of the BF. At present, furnace protection measures and furnace protection strength are mostly selected based on engineering experience. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical model of BF hearth with elephant-type depression erosion was established to predict and evaluate the effect of furnace protection measures. At the same time, the phase change behavior of hot iron solidification was also considered. A numerical model was used to analyze common furnace protection measures such as increasing furnace hearth cooling, closing the tuyere, reducing the tapping productivity, and reducing the tapping temperature. The calculation results are consistent with actual furnace protection experience.

Abstract:High smelting intensity and long campaign life are highly desired for blast furnace ironmaking. However, high smelting intensity or productivity has an adverse effect on the campaign life. An analysis of the relationship between productivity and the temperature of a side wall of a hearth based on the data from a commercial blast furnace is first presented in this work. Then, to predict the temperature, a mathematical model is established with an iron flow estimation model. Based on the model, an outline of measures to extend the campaign life of a BF is discussed. Finally, a better initial profile for a BF hearth is proposed. The prediction shows that the convective heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase of molten iron circulation. The hearth erosion at 1.5 m below the taphole centerline is more severe than other locations because the corner of the deadman is located at this level and the distance between the deadman surface to the side wall reaches the minimum point. The sidewall of hearth might be constructed with a slope so that the distance between the sidewall of hearth and the deadman surface can be large at the deadman corner, reducing the circulation of the molten iron.

Abstract:With the increase of Ti-bearing blast furnace slag, its harm is growing. It contains high titanium content. How to make good use of Ti-bearing blast furnace slag is currently a hot problem. In this paper, the conditions of comprehensive utilization on Ti-bearing blast furnace slag were described firstly. Then the features, application field and problems of extraction and non-extraction titanium from Ti-bearing blast furnace slag were introduced. The advantages, disadvantages and problems of comprehensive utilization of Ti-bearing blast furnace slag were analyzed. Finally the application prospects were forecasted.
