Abstract:GC/FPD coupled the Air Preconcentrations was applied to the determination of 7 kinds of trace sulfur compounds in environment air. It was found that the system blank of the Air Preconcentration-GC/FPD was clear, and no residuum after the analysis of sulfur compounds. Results showed that the correlation coefficient of 7 sulfur compounds were all above 0. 995, it has high accuracy and precision. In addition, the recovery of sulfur compounds were in the range of 98. 6%-105. 3%, 99. 1%-103. 7%,85. 7%-99. 7%. The relative standard deviations of the methods lower than 6. 9% for 6 compounds, but for hydrogen sulfide, the relative standard deviation was 10. 9%. Otherwise, when inject volume was 400 mL,the limit detection of 7 sulfur compounds was 0. 10-1. 1 ng/m3 . So the measurement system was sensitive for sulfur compounds and very suitable for determination of the trace sulfur compounds in environment air.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:The accurate, repeatable, and verifiable measurement of SO 3 /H 2 SO 4 is significant to the reliability operation of coal-fired power plants, as well as environment protection and human health. Although the amount of SO 3 in flue gas is very small, and its chemical property is extremely active, the measurement of SO 3 /H 2 SO 4 is difficult and problematic. The measurement errors of controlled condensation method for SO 3 /H 2 SO 4 in flue gas were evaluated with a sampling system based on dilute sulfuric acid heating method. In order to improve the test accuracy of this method, the effects of water bath temperature, flue gas sampling flow rate, and spiral condensing tube structure parameters (inner diameter and length of spiral condensing tube) on the recovery efficiency of SO 3 /H 2 SO 4 were investigated. The results indicate that the recovery efficiency fluctuates in the range between 84.1% and 91.6%, with the water bath temperature increasing from 40°C to 90°C. As the flue gas sampling flow rate increases from .5 L/min to 4 L/min, the recovery efficiency of SO 3 /H 2 SO 4 shows a gradual tendency of increasing, and the recovery efficiency can be high up to 98.4%. When the inner diameter of the spiral condensing tube increases from 3 mm to 10 mm, the recovery efficiency of SO 3 /H 2 SO 4 decreases gradually. The recovery efficiency of SO 3 /H 2 SO 4 increases gradually with the spiral condensing tube length increasing from 900 mm to 2000 mm.

Abstract:Ion chromatography was used for measurement of sulfite,sulfate,nitrate and nitrite ions that leaching from the by products of simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification by calcium based sorbent.The study focused on the stability of single ions and interactions of the four kinds of ions.It is found that sulfate,nitrate and nitrite ions were stable,however,sulfite ion could be easily oxidized.Formaldehyde was used as stabilizing agent to prevent sulfite ion effectively from being oxidized effectively.However,the mass percentage of formaldehyde should be less than 0.05％ when KOH solution is used as the pour lotion,since excess formaldehyde would decrease SO32-peak area and also had negative effect on the chromatographic column.Formaldehyde had no effect on the measurement of nitrate and nitrite ions.During the determination process,it was found that these four ions had little interference,and all ions showed good linearity.If alkalescent solution (like Na2CO3) was used as pour lotion,formaldehyde should not be used as oxidation inhibitor.In conclusion,sulfite,sulfate,nitrate and nitrite ions could be accurately determined by ion chromatography with addition of proper dosage of formaldehyde in the solution.

Abstract:The increasing applications of low-cost air sensors promises more convenient and cost-effective systems for air monitoring in many places and under many conditions. However, the data quality from such systems has not been fully characterized and may not meet user expectations in research and regulatory uses, or for use in citizen science. In our study, electrochemical sensors (Alphasense B4 series) for carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and oxidants (Ox) were evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions to identify the influencing factors and quantify their relation with sensor outputs. Based on the laboratory tests, we developed different correction methods to compensate for the impact of ambient conditions. Further, the sensors were assembled into a monitoring system and tested in ambient conditions in Hong Kong side-by-side with regulatory reference monitors, and data from these tests were used to evaluate the performance of the models, to refine them, and validate their applicability in variable ambient conditions in the field. The more comprehensive correction models demonstrated enhanced performance when compared with uncorrected data. One over-arching observation of this study is that the low-cost sensors may promise excellent sensitivity and performance, but it is essential for users to understand and account for several key factors that may strongly affect the nature of sensor data. In this paper, we also evaluated factors of multi-month stability, temperature, and humidity, and considered the interaction of oxidant gases NO₂ and ozone on a newly introduced oxidant sensor.

Abstract:The determination of total sulfur (S) in soils and plant tissue samples can be accomplished using a combination of sodium bicarbonate/silver oxide, dry ashing and ion chromatography(IC). The proposed method offers high precision and acceptable accuracy for samples with more than 0.02% S. At the same time this procedure makes use of standard analytical equipment used in other phases of soil, water and plant tissue analysis. Soil sample sizes larger than 0.1g or high total S or barite (BaSO4) may not have acceptable S recoveries due to incomplete S oxidation or dissolution of BaSO4. In order to optimize recoveries of total S in these special soil samples, varying (decreasing) sample sizes is required.

Abstract:A method for precise quantitation of sulfate in standard solutions by ion chromatography with suppression conductivity detection has been developed. The separation of sulfate was conducted on an IonPac AS19 anion exchange column (2 mm x 250 mm) with NaOH solution as isocratic eluent. The injection volume was 25 mu L. An orthogonally designed experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of the experiment factors, such as column temperature concentration of eluent NaOH, flow-rate of the eluent, and cell temperature. The optimal chromatographic conditions obtained were as follows: column temperature, 30 degrees C; NaOH concentration, 30 mmol/L; flow-rate of the eluent, 0. 25 mL/min; cell temperature, 35 degrees C. The detection limit (3 sigma) was 0. 005 mg/L. On the level of 4. 5 mg/L sulfate, the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 0. 44% (n = 8). The linear range of calibration curve was 1. 0 - 50. 0 mg/L. The reliability of method was shown by the evaluation of stability of calibration curves. The variance analysis showed that the intercept and slope of 7 calibration curves were controlled statistically in the desired range. The reliability of method was shown by quality control samples, where RSD and relative error were less than 0. 9%, and 0. 8%, respectively. Average recovery of standard addition was 95. 5% - 105%. The method has been applied to the quantitation of sulfate in standard solution.

Abstract:At present, the methods for sulfur solubility testing of high-sulfur natural gas generally use laboratory proportioning gas samples and then connect equipment to test the sulfur solubility of the gas samples based on the adsorption deposition mechanism. However, these testing methods generally have the following problems: (1) The equipment used in these test methods has safety hazards such as leakage at pipe and valve connections. (2) The sulfur solubility of real gas samples cannot be measured directly. (3) The equipment is difficult to clean, and it is especially difficult to clean the sulfur deposited at pipe elbows and valve connections. This will lead to low sulfur solubility test results. (4) The thermal insulation performance during the test process is not good, and temperature changes have a great impact on gas volume measurement. In order to solve the above problems, a testing method and comprehensive experimental device for the solubility of elemental sulfur in high-sulfur natural gas were established. This test method wraps the entire experimental device with a metal shell, which has good safety and thermal insulation performance, and it uses customized pipeline connections, which have high flushing efficiency, less sulfur deposition, and more accurate experimental results. The upgraded filtration system can directly measure the sulfur dissolution of real gas samples, and a CS2 solution recovery process is added to reduce the risk of leakage and environmental pollution. This method and equipment were used to test the elemental sulfur solubility determination of real gas samples from a high-sulfur gas well. The research results show that the solubility of elemental sulfur is related to temperature, pressure, and H2S concentration and increases with the increase in temperature, pressure, and H2S concentration. Compared with the previous method, this method has less residual sulfur during the test process, the measured sulfur solubility is 2.13% greater, and the test results are more accurate and reliable. This research result provides important basic data support for accurately measuring the elemental sulfur solubility of real gas samples in high-sulfur gas reservoirs and dealing with sulfur deposition problems.

Abstract:The influence factors of determination TVOC in indoor air were studied.The test results showed that precision of sampling volume affected authenticity of determenation results.Scene ventilation time was 24 hours at least before closing the room.The ideal chromatogram maps could be obtained at the optimal parameters for gas chromatography(GC)and thermal thermal desorptioner.The thermal desoprtion rate decreased with desorption time.Using polar capillary chromatogram columns could separate the peaks of paraxylene and metaxylene.The granularity and compactness of sorbent in the Tenax-TA tubes influenced adsorption and desorption of samples.The lower were desoprtion rates of benzene and styrene,the greater were deviation of determination results.

Abstract:In the present work, a method for the determination of total sulfur in graphene with the organic elemental analyzer is presented. The effects of combustion temperature, combustion time, oxygen flow rate, filling reagent, and other factors on measurement results were examined. The results showed that the optimum test results can be obtained when the combustion tube temperature is 1050°C, combustion time 80s, the oxygen flow rate 25 ml/min and tungsten oxide/copper scraps used as the filling reagent. The repeatability, stability, and spike recovery of this method fall into the ranges of 3.4%~ 5.1%, 4.5% ~ 6.6%, and 92.5% ~ 108.6%, respectively. The detection limit is 0.09%, and the deviation between this method and the Eschka method as an arbitration method is -0.02%~-0.08%. Since there is no significant difference between the two methods, both can be used for the accurate determination of total sulfur in graphene.
Study on comparison the determination of residue of sulfur dioxide in traditional Chinese medicine by ion chromatography and titration

Abstract:Objective To establish a method for the determination of residue of sulfur dioxide in traditional Chinese medicine. Methods The samples were extracted by wet distillation under acidic conditions,with 3% hydrogen peroxide as absorption liquid, and then determined by ion exchange- ion chromatography conductivity detection. The determination was performed on IonPac@ AS11- HC( 250 mm × 4 mm) ion exchange column with mobile phase consisted of 20 mmol / L KOH at a flow rate of 1 ml / min, the column temperature was set at 30 ℃,the detection cell temperature was set at 35 ℃. Results The linear range of sulphate was 1 ~ 200 μg / ml( r = 0. 999) with an average recovery of 80. 80% ~ 103. 07%( RSD = 1. 73% ~ 7. 62%). Conclusion The method is sensitive,specific,automatic and simple.

Comparative Investigation of the Spectroscopic Behavior Based on High-Concentrated Solution in Nitrogen and Air Atmospheres

Abstract:In order to accurately obtain photometric information of high concentration SO42- and other substances in the process industry, the spectroscopy behavior of SO42-, S2-, Ni2+ and Cu2+ in air and nitrogen atmosphere was compared based on the UV-visible spectrophotometer with a nitrogen replacing the oxygen. Different from Ni2+ and Cu2+, the accuracy of SO42- and S2- in the ultraviolet region was effectively improved by using a nitrogen atmosphere (P detection results were regressed within the limited standard range, RE < 5%). The nitrogen atmosphere suppressed the additional light attenuation caused by its absorption of ultraviolet rays by isolating oxygen and was also reflected in the decrease in the degree of red shift of the characteristic wavelength for SO42- with increasing concentration. Therefore, the detection results of SO42- showed an effective improvement in sensitivity. Nevertheless, according to the complementary experimental results and theoretical calculations, in addition to oxygen absorption, the low detection accuracy of SO42- high concentration is also attributed to the reduction of the energy required for electronic excitation per unit group caused by the interaction between SO42- groups, resulting in a deviation of the C-A curve from linearity at high concentrations. The influence of this intermolecular force on the detection results is far more important than oxygen absorption. The research can provide reliable theoretical guidance and technical support for the pollution-free direct measurement of high-concentration solutions in the process industry and promote the sustainable development of the process industry.

Abstract:An accurate and simple method using gas chromatography was developed for the determination of sulfur compounds in syngas.Six-way valve with three loops for auto introduction of sample and flame photometry detector(FPD) having satisfactory selectivity for sulfur and phosphorus were used.The linear regression relationship between the logarithm of the dose versus the logarithm of the peak area were obtained giving correlation coefficients of 0.999 5,0.999 7 and 0.999 7 for H_2S,COS and CS_2 respectively.

Abstract:Volatile organic sulfur compounds, with low odor threshold concentration and deadly toxicity, are important odorants in drinking water in China. Analytical testing techniques for sulfur odorants in water, as the foundation of all the related research, catch great attention. This paper reviews the characteristics of common sulfur odorants, the main difficulties and solutions encountered in analyzing volatile organic sulfur compounds in water. A detailed discuss in selection of detector, chromatographic column, method of preconcentration in gas chromatographic determinations, which is the most practical technique in analysis of sulphur-containing compounds, and prospects of analytical testing techniques for volatile organic sulfur in water are presented in this paper.
Roles of Sulfur Oxidation Pathways in the Variability in Stable Sulfur Isotopic Composition of Sulfate Aerosols at an Urban Site in Beijing, China

Abstract:Sulfate (SO42–) is an important chemical species in atmospheric aerosols, which strongly impacts atmospheric chemistry processes and climate change. Stable sulfur isotopes (δ34S) of sulfate aerosols in PM2.5 were measured in Beijing from November 13 to December 2, 2018, to investigate the pathways of formation of sulfate aerosols. The results showed that SO42– constituted a major fraction (18%) of water-soluble ions and significant enhancement of sulfate was observed during the haze period. The δ34S-SO42– values averaged at 4.4 ± 1.4‰ during the full period, exhibiting a downward trend with an increase in sulfate concentration. The change in sulfur isotope values could not be explained by the changes in emission sources. Significant correlations were found between observed δ34S-SO42– values and SO2 oxidation ratios (R = −0.88; p < 0.01), indicating the changes in sulfur isotopes were attributed to the SO2 oxidation processes. On the basis of Rayleigh distillation, the average fractionation factor between SO2 and SO42– was 4.0 ± 1.2‰. Combining sulfur isotopes and the Bayesian model, we quantified the contributions of primary sulfate, OH, H2O2/O3, NO2, and O2 [catalyzed by transition metal ions (TMIs)] oxidation pathways to sulfate formation were 7%, 20%, 16%, 27%, and 30%, respectively. The contributions of TMI and NO2 pathways increased from 24% and 20% during the clean period to 38% and 29% during the haze period, respectively. Abstract:Ambient air samples were collected in Southeast Asian cities (Beijing, Bangkok, Kuala Lumper and Jakarta etc.) by passive samplers. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was analyzed as sulfate ion in solution by FIA with a BaSO4-immobilized on-line reaction column. The method was based on the reaction of sulfate ion with barium-dimethylsulfonazo-III complex. The results agreed with those obtained by ion chromatography. The results showed that the SO2 concentrations in theses cities were in the range of 24-140 ppb.

Simple methods for rapid determination of sulfite in food products

Abstract:Two simple methods for sulfite determination in food products were proposed. The modified para-rosaniline (PRA)-formaldehyde method showed a much broader linear range (0.05–5.0mgl−1 as SO2) than the commonly used procedure for the sulfur dioxide detection in the atmosphere (0.05–1.0mgl−1 as SO2). By using a standard reference color card, this method only needed 5min to complete a test. The 5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) method was another good alternative for rapid determination of sulfite since it only needed one main reagent and the method was robust and easy to operate with the linear range of 0.10–4.3mgl−1 as SO2. When applying to real food samples, the DTNB method had good recoveries for all the tested samples and the results agreed well with those obtained by the official iodometric titration. The modified PRA-formaldehyde method worked well with all the tested dried food products, though matrix effect of sulfite binding was observed for the beer samples. Thus, the modified PRA-formaldehyde method has advantages of sensitivity and rapidity, but the DTNB method offers a wider range of applications. Both methods provided practical ways for in situ determination of sulfite by non-professional operators with the modified PRA-formaldehyde method suited for food samples with less sulfite binding problems.

Abstract:This paper made the adsorption characteristics of SO 2 in electrolytic cell of Coulomb sulfur analyzer as the research target.How the SO 2 concentration, stirring rate, electrolytic cell soluble plate and electrolyte weight affected the absorption characteristics of SO 2 of electrolytic cell were researched.The research showed that the peak values of SO 2 released during coal sample combustion in sulfur analyzer were in the range of 100×10 -6 ~2 000×10 -6 , when the sulfur content was higher, the SO 2 concentration increased meanwhile; when we let the SO 2 standards gas and the SO 2 generated in coal sample combustion get through the electrolytic cell, the saturation overflow phenomenon appeared; the calculation showed that the SO 2 absorptive capacity of electrolytic cell was constant, it has nothing to do with the SO 2 concentration.For the electrolytic cell which could normally work, the medium-low concentration SO 2 standard gas , and the SO 2 released by medium-low sulfur coal combustion both had no overflow phenomenon, but high concentration SO 2 standard gas and high sulfur coal sample both had the overflow phenomenon, therefore, the mechanisms of why the determination result of high sulfur coal was high could be explained;increasing the stirring rate and soluble plate quantity could not increase the SO 2 absorptive capacity of electrolytic cell, but raising the electrolyte volume, reducing the sample amount and optimizing of electrolytic circuit could improve the accuracy of result of sulfur analyzer further.
