Abstract:A modified FIA method was developed for the determination of sulphur dioxide (SO2) in ambient air collected by a passive sampler. SO2 was oxidized by hydrogen peroxide and determined as sulphate ion in solution. Barium-dimethylsulfoazo-III complex was used as spectrophotometric reagent. A BaSO4-immobilized in-line reaction column was introduced into the flow system to increase the sensitivity and reproducibility. An in-line cation exchange column was used to eliminate triethanolamine, which was used as the absorbent reagent in the passive sampler. Sulphate ions can be analyzed in the range of 0.08–10.00 mg l−1 with the R.S.D. less than 1.6% at the rate of 15 samples h−1. It was satisfactory to apply this method to the analysis of sulphur dioxide in ambient air and the results agreed with those obtained by ion chromatography.

Abstract:This study describes a continuous flow procedure for monitoring atmospheric sulfur dioxide using a planar gas permeation denuder (GPD) and a fiber optic spectrometer. When gaseous samples are directed through a GPD which consists of a gas-permeable membrane of poly(vinylidene) difluoride and two perspex blocks with engraved channels of mirror image, the fraction of sulfur dioxide passing the membrane is absorbed in a flowing stream of 5.0×10−4 mol L−1 5,5′-dithiobis(2,2′-dinitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) in 0.025 mol L−1 phosphate buffer of pH 7.0, and reacts with DTNB to yield a yellow product. This product is monitored spectrophotometrically at 410 nm with a miniature charge-coupled device (CCD) fiber optic spectrometer. The analytical range of sulfur dioxide is easily adjusted via the flow rate of DTNB solution, normally from 200 ppb to 94 ppm (v/v). The procedure is hardly interfered with by coexisting metal and non-metal species, except for hydrogen sulfide in the atmosphere. The error caused by hydrogen sulfide at a sulfur dioxide level (in ppm) of 2% is less than ±10%. With the proposed procedure, the result for a mimetic air sample is very close to that of the ultraviolet fluorescence method.

Abstract:. A simple and novel flow injection method for the determination of gaseous SO 2 is described based on gas permeation denuder (GPD) online sampling and preconcentration. The GPD is easily prepared with poly(vinylidene) difluoride microporous membrane as gas permeable material and two Perspex blocks with smooth and flat interface and rectangular engraved channels of mirror image. The sample gas is on one side of the membrane and phosphate buffer of pH 7.0 as the absorbing solution is on the other side. Gaseous SO 2 permeates partially through the gas permeable membrane and dissolves in the absorbing solution. After preconcentration for 5.0 or 8.0 min, the solution is injected into the flow of 5.0×10 –4 mol L –1 5,5'-dithiobis(2,2'-dinitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) in 0.025 mol L –1 phosphate buffer. The resulting product formed between DTNB and absorbed SO 2 is spectrophotometrically monitored at 410 nm with a charge coupled device (CCD) fiber optic spectrometer. The calibration graphs for preconcentration of 5.0 and 8.0 min are linear up to 4.0 and 3.2 mg m –3 with detection limits of 50 and 35 µg m –3 , respectively. The corresponding analysis speeds are 8.5 and 6 samples h –1 . The method is selective and just suffer from interference of hydrogen sulfide at higher than 1% of SO 2 level (in m/V) with an error >+10%. The assay just uses cheap and common membrane and reagents and shows potential application in the monitoring of atmospheric SO 2 .

Abstract:SO 2 and NO 2 are the most important pollution in atmosphere. An optimized long path(LP) differential optical absorption spectroscopy(DOAS) system of high light intensity at an ultraviolet(UV) wavelength is proposed and used to measure the concentration of SO 2 and NO 2 simultaneously. In contrast to the traditional DOAS, the system adopted a Y-type optical fiber structure instead of a combination of mirrors in the telescope. The UV light intensity test shows that the light intensity of UV can arrive to above 80% of the max measuring range when the light path reaches 135 m, and the integral time of the spectrograph is only 15 ms. The system is proved to be efficacious through laboratory calibration. The maximum error of SO 2 calibration is 4.19%, and is 5.22% for NO 2 . The error of the SO 2 and NO 2 mixture calibration is within 10%. Field measurement is implemented in a wastewater treatment plant in winter. The measurement light path is 738 m. The concentration of SO 2 varies from 6 μg/m 3 (2.26 ppb) to 20 μg/m 3 (7.52 ppb), and the concentration of NO 2 varies from 100 μg/m 3 (53.2 ppb)to 200 μg/m 3 (106.4 ppb) approximately. The results are in accordance with the data from a monitoring station nearby in magnitude order and variation tendency mostly.

Abstract:Accurate, rapid and reliable quantification of saccharides is essential for understanding their behaviors and roles in environmental processes. However, the conventional colorimetric method for saccharide quantification fails to discriminate fructose and glucose, resulting in the mis-estimation of total saccharides. To solve this problem, a fluorescence approach, i.e., parallel factor framework-linear regression analysis, was developed in this work to quantify the specific fluorescence signatures of the fluorescent products generated from the reaction between saccharides and sulfuric acid. The fluorescent derivatives of saccharides were recognized and the simultaneous quantification of glucose and fructose was achieved with a detection limit of 2.9 µg/mL and 1.3 µg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, 200 µg/mL of the treated sorbitol and gluconic acid only respectively equaled to 6 µg/mL and 3 µg/mL of the treated glucose, indicating their negligible interference for the saccharide quantification using this method. In addition, the feasibility and robustness of this method in environmental applications were validated with the recovery tests using spiked real water samples. This fluorescence-based approach offers a new tool to monitor saccharides in complex environments.

Abstract:Nitric oxide (NO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are mainly from burning fossil fuels. They are toxic gases and harmful to environment and human health. It is very important to monitor the level of SO2 and NO in flue gas. In this work, an optical SO2 and NO measurement system was established based on differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS). A cross-sensitivity band of SO2 and NO was selected, fast Fourier transform (FFT) was employed to decompose the differential optical density (DOD) characteristics of SO2 in the mixed gas, inverse FFT (IFFT) was employed to reconstruct the DOD of SO2, and the interference of NO on SO2 was overcome. The most sensitive absorption peak but strongly interfered by SO2 was selected to monitor NO. A method that was employed to decompose the DOD of NO was proposed, and the interference of SO2 on NO was overcome. The full-scale error of system reached 0.7% for SO2 and NO, respectively, and the detection limit (DL) of SO2 and NO reached 0.36 and 0.39 ppm, respectively.

Abstract:Water bodies are frequently polluted, with sulfur oxides being the most common form of water pollution. Therefore, developing a detection mechanism for sulfur oxides in water bodies is particularly urgent. A new fluorescent probe YX-KZBD was designed and developed. This probe releases fluorescent signals with its own sulfurous acid recognition site, detects sulfurous acid based on the Michael addition reaction, and evaluates the pollution degree of sulfur oxides in the water environment through the transformation mode of the sulfur cycle . This probe has high energy transfer efficiency in aqueous solutions. In addition, the fluorescence data obtained by analyzing the water samples were linearly fitted with the gene abundance values of the functional genes of sulfur-producing bacteria, and a significant correlation was obtained. The Kriging interpolation model was used to evaluate the sulfate content distribution at each sampling point to understand the distribution of sulfur oxides in natural water intuitively. The fluorescence signal excited by the probe was also combined with a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and sulfate-reducing and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were introduced in the sulfur cycle, providing a new method to assess the extent of water pollution effectively.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is a typical additive that serves as an antioxidant, preservative, and decolorizer in industrial production. Yet, excessive SO 2 residues in the products pose a potential risk to human health. Although many fluorescent probes have been developed for the detection of SO 2 , effectively eliminating the interference from thiols on the selective recognition of SO 2 remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a coumarin-derived ratiometric fluorescent probe 1 for quantitatively sensing the SO 2 residues in actual samples. This probe can selectively recognize bisulfite (HSO 3 - ) based on the different p K a values between HSO 3 - and thiols. The working mechanism of this probe was further rationalized by the combination of experiments and quantum chemical calculations. Probe 1 was successfully used for the quantitative detection of SO 2 residues in medicine-food homology (MFH) samples with good sensitivity and accuracy. Furthermore, rapid visual and semi-quantitative detection of SO 2 can also be realized through a disposable test tube.

Abstract:Under the extensive implementation of ultra-low emission facilities, sulfur trioxide (SO3) has received increasing attention. This article reviews the measurement techniques for SO3 in flue gas, which include controlled condensation method (CCM), isopropanol absorption method (IPA), salt method, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (UVs), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The first three methods are chemical methods, which focus on the extraction of SO3 from flue gas. With highly reactive nature and relatively low concentrations, which are about 5 mg/m3 even lower, achieving high-fidelity flue gas sampling and non-destructive extraction of SO3 is the key to SO3 measurement. The latter three methods belong to spectroscopic methods, which focus on the principle, system composition, and influencing factor analysis. With real-time response and 1-ppm detection limit, attention is attracted to spectroscopic methods on online measurement. This article comprehensively introduces the measurement techniques for SO3 concentration in flue gas and presents conclusions so as to enable researchers to decide the direction of further investigation.

Abstract:An accurate and simple method using gas chromatography was developed for the determination of sulfur compounds in syngas.Six-way valve with three loops for auto introduction of sample and flame photometry detector(FPD) having satisfactory selectivity for sulfur and phosphorus were used.The linear regression relationship between the logarithm of the dose versus the logarithm of the peak area were obtained giving correlation coefficients of 0.999 5,0.999 7 and 0.999 7 for H_2S,COS and CS_2 respectively.

Abstract:In order to accurately obtain photometric information of high concentration SO42- and other substances in the process industry, the spectroscopy behavior of SO42-, S2-, Ni2+ and Cu2+ in air and nitrogen atmosphere was compared based on the UV-visible spectrophotometer with a nitrogen replacing the oxygen. Different from Ni2+ and Cu2+, the accuracy of SO42- and S2- in the ultraviolet region was effectively improved by using a nitrogen atmosphere (P detection results were regressed within the limited standard range, RE < 5%). The nitrogen atmosphere suppressed the additional light attenuation caused by its absorption of ultraviolet rays by isolating oxygen and was also reflected in the decrease in the degree of red shift of the characteristic wavelength for SO42- with increasing concentration. Therefore, the detection results of SO42- showed an effective improvement in sensitivity. Nevertheless, according to the complementary experimental results and theoretical calculations, in addition to oxygen absorption, the low detection accuracy of SO42- high concentration is also attributed to the reduction of the energy required for electronic excitation per unit group caused by the interaction between SO42- groups, resulting in a deviation of the C-A curve from linearity at high concentrations. The influence of this intermolecular force on the detection results is far more important than oxygen absorption. The research can provide reliable theoretical guidance and technical support for the pollution-free direct measurement of high-concentration solutions in the process industry and promote the sustainable development of the process industry.

Abstract:GC/FPD coupled the Air Preconcentrations was applied to the determination of 7 kinds of trace sulfur compounds in environment air. It was found that the system blank of the Air Preconcentration-GC/FPD was clear, and no residuum after the analysis of sulfur compounds. Results showed that the correlation coefficient of 7 sulfur compounds were all above 0. 995, it has high accuracy and precision. In addition, the recovery of sulfur compounds were in the range of 98. 6%-105. 3%, 99. 1%-103. 7%,85. 7%-99. 7%. The relative standard deviations of the methods lower than 6. 9% for 6 compounds, but for hydrogen sulfide, the relative standard deviation was 10. 9%. Otherwise, when inject volume was 400 mL,the limit detection of 7 sulfur compounds was 0. 10-1. 1 ng/m3 . So the measurement system was sensitive for sulfur compounds and very suitable for determination of the trace sulfur compounds in environment air.

Abstract:Ambient air samples were collected in Southeast Asian cities (Beijing, Bangkok, Kuala Lumper and Jakarta etc.) by passive samplers. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was analyzed as sulfate ion in solution by FIA with a BaSO4-immobilized on-line reaction column. The method was based on the reaction of sulfate ion with barium-dimethylsulfonazo-III complex. The results agreed with those obtained by ion chromatography. The results showed that the SO2 concentrations in theses cities were in the range of 24-140 ppb.

Abstract:A photographic method is developed to measure the reaction rate of sulfite oxidation. The sole oxygen bubble in sulfite solutioin is observed by a CCD camera when measuring the reaction rate of sulfite oxidation, and the graphic pictures are captured. The data of reaction rate is obtained by applying for the image processing software to identify the pictures. The experiment result shows this photographic method has a high practice and precision.

Abstract:The concentration of fluorine in rock samples was determined by spectrophotometry in p-sulfophenylazo chromotropic acid (SPADNS) system. The best determination conditions are: measurement wavelength of 570 nm, determination media of 0.84 mol/L HCl, chromogenic reagent (SPADNS) dosage of 5.0 mL and reaction equilibrium time of 2 h. The Beer's law was obeyed in 0～1.4 mg/L of F~- with detection limit of 0.06 μg/g. The interference from coexistent elements could be effectively reduced by using standard rock samples for calibration instead of using standard fluorine solutions. The method has been applied to the determination of fluorine in National Standard Reference Materials and Japan Standard Reference Basalt sample. The results are in agreement with certified values with precision of 2.37%～6.32% RSD (n=6).
