Abstract:Based on the fluid network theory, the phase shift mechanism of the pulse tube cooler is investigated. From the phase shift and amplitude adjustment of the flow impedance, the performance of the various pulse tube coolers is theoretically analyzed. By this way, the shortcoming of the traditional phase shift theory emphasized on phase shift capacity of the cooler is overcome while neglecting the amplitude adjustment capacity of the flow impedance, therefore the operation characteristics of the different structures are better understood. This method gives a new theoretical tool to predict and analyze the performance of the pulse tube cooler, and has advantages of simpleness and intuition. By the further perfection, this theoretical result can be used to quantitative design the pulse tube cooler and develope new structure.

Abstract:To cool down a cryogenic pump system effectively from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures, a pressurized natural circulating system with gas-phase inlet is suggested and tested. Experimental data show that a higher-pressure gradient in the reflux. pipe can be easily formed on pressurizing condition and the geysering phenomenon observed in the natural circulation at the atmospheric pressure 1,21 could also be lightened. Thus, the pressurization condition may be benefit to keep the pump and its pipe under a subcooling state. In addition, an injection with large mass flow rate on the pressurizing condition is more effective for an insulated reflux pipe than that of an uninsulated one.

Abstract:A Stirling/pulse tube hybrid cooler is comprised of a Stirling cooler as the first stage and a pulse tube cooler as the second stage. Such a cooler is able to shift cooling capacity between stages by adjusting the phase of the displacer. Therefore, this hybrid cooler can adapt itself to time-varying heat loads at different temperatures. In this paper, an idealized model of the hybrid cooler is introduced, which is followed by a qualitative analysis on the mechanism of the hybrid cooler's ability of shifting cooling capacity between stages. It is found that such an ability of the hybrid cooler is conditional and the condition that enables this ability of the hybrid cooler is proposed. The analysis result is compared with numerical result from a Sage model and a good agreement is achieved. The understanding of the hybrid cooler's mechanism of inter-stage cooling capacity shifting would be beneficial to its proper design and optimization.

Abstract:The DC flow induced in the double-inlet of a pulse tube cooler deteriorates greatly the cooling capacity, and causes the cooler temperature instability. Whether the cooler could be widely used depends heavily on the simpler and more effective DC flow suppression ways to be developed. Therefore, a better understanding of its creation reason is very necessary. Based on this hot research point, investigation on the generation of the DC flow in double-inlet pulse tube coolers is undertaken. From the fluid network theory, the influence of thermo-property of the working fluid on the DC flow is theoretically studied to further reveal its creation mechanism.

Abstract:Based on the software SAGE,a pneumatically driven Split-Stirling cryocooler operating at hundred hertz range was designed and the influence of some parameters on the cryocooler was discussed.The design was verified in some extent by using a commercial compressor to drive the cryocooler.The experimental results show that the cryocooler can reach a no-load temperature of 77.1 K and gain 0.28 W cooling power at 90.0 K,while running at 105 Hz and the charging pressure of 2.50 MPa.

Abstract:The cooling power is one of the most important performances of a Stirling cooler. However, in some special fields, the cool down time is more important. It is a great challenge to improve the cool down time of the Stirling cooler. A new split Stirling linear cryogenic cooler SCI09H was designed in this study. A new structure of linear motor is used in the compressor, and the machine spring is used in the expander. In order to reduce the cool down time, the stainless-steel mesh of regenerator is optimized The weight of the cooler is 1.1 kg, the cool down time to 80K is 2 minutes at 296K with a 250J thermal mass, the cooling power is 1.1W at 80K, and the input power is 50W.
Natural Circulation Precooling Experiment of Cryogenic Pump System

Abstract:To cool down a cryogenic pump system effectively from room temperature to cryogenic temperature, the natural circulation system is introduced. In this system, the liquid nitrogen is discharged from a liquid nitrogen vessel and goes through the cryogenic pump, then flows in a circle by the reflux pipe back to the vessel. The experimental apparatus is illustrated and test process is described. Heat transfer and pressure drop during the cool-down process is portrayed in the figures. The experimental results demonstrate that the natural circulation is an efficient way to precool the pump system and maintain it at cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract:An intercooling technique using convective cooling channels in the compressor stator vanes has been proposed in recent years. In this paper, two cooling methods are presented and conjugate heat transfer method is used in the numerical simulation to study the effect of cooling on the laminar boundary layer and turbulent boundary layer in compressors. The overall performance of the compressor is also analyzed. A flat plate in T3C series experiments under adverse pressure gradient has been simulated to verify the aerodynamic simulation and preliminarily investigate the cooling effect. Subsequently, a two-dimensional compressor vane NACA65-(12A2I8b)10 has been numerically simulated to study the cooling effect on two-dimensional boundary layer of the curve surface. The numerical simulation results of the vane without cooling channel are in good agreement with the experiment data by NASA. By comparing it with the case which has convective cooling channels, it can be found that the cooling decreases the size of laminar separation bubble and delays the turbulent separation, which reduces the loss at both the design and off-design angle of attack. A three-dimensional highly-loaded five-stage axial compressor whose stator vanes have cooling channels and cooling endwalls has also been numerically simulated. The cooling channels and endwalls decrease the temperature rising of the main stream with a slight increase of the pressure rising, which indicates that this intercooling method can be used in the intercooled and recuperated (ICR) cycle. Cooling channels decrease the temperature of the stator vanes and protect them from the high temperature. Besides, the effect of cooling on the turbulent separation in the corner region has also been investigated. The cooling channels decrease the total pressure loss, which indicates that cooling has a beneficial effect on the aerodynamic performance of the compressor.

Abstract:The large superconducting magnet are widely used and play an important role in nuclear fusion device, high-energy accelerator, space target infrared and other forefront fields. In this paper, we design several cryogenic centrifugal compressor stages for helium refrigerator with 3.3K-11K inlet temperature, used in exhausting the low-pressure and low-temperature saturated helium steam, further producing superfluid helium and cooling the large superconducting magnet. Due to the cryogenic compressor running environment and the internal structure, about 30W heat leakage from impeller hubs and the end of shafts into the flow passages are unavoidable, and it is necessary to consider this heat leakage in the centrifugal compressor impeller design. Firstly, adding the heat leakage into thermodynamic process and centrifugal compressor effective formula, then adjusting the inlet and outlet design parameters according to the heat transfer rate and make the preliminarily designs of each stage of the compressor. Four different methods for varying p design condition parameters are compared by CFD simulation. The 3-D impellers are designed by the Streamline Curvature Method, and the vaneless diffusers and volutes are designed by the inlet and outlet section aerodynamic parameters. When the best design method is determined, the blade profiles are further adjusted in order to improve the stage performance. Finally, the characteristic curves under variable working conditions and the generalized stage performance curves of each stage are calculated. In this paper, we delve into a high efficiency centrifugal compressor stage design method with the consideration of heat transfer effect. In the next step, more running data will be obtained after the further experiments and the long-term operation.

Abstract:In the two-phase electronic direct cooling system, the traditional centrifugal pump often has low efficiency, and it heavily suffers from the cavitation problem. To deal with this problem, a sliding vane rotary pump was developed and tested in a two-phase electronic evaporative cooling system, and the working performance was investigated and analyzed based on the experimental data. The effect of the suction port size was studied. In a two-phase cooling system, the volumetric efficiency decreased with the rotary speed. The discharge valve had no fatal influence on the stable working performance of the pump. However, it highly affected the volumetric efficiency in high rotary speed while it acted insignificantly in the low speed. A stable cooling result could be quickly obtained during the change of the heat flux with the driving of the sliding vane pump, and a minor dependence between flow rates was detected, which was caused by the pressure rise. Therefore, the sliding vane pump was able to be an alternative pump for the two-phase electronic direct cooling system.

Abstract:The study reveals the effect of interstage pressure with the consideration of gas cooler outlet temperature on the cooling performance of an operating CO2 heat pump system currently in use at a dairy plant. Based on the numerical model and CO2 properties, it was found that the maximum mass fraction of liquid allocated for cooling can be achieved in the middle of the operating range of interstage pressure when the enthalpy at the location of the gas cooler outlet is between 341 kJ/kg. K and 399 kJ/kg. K (that is, the gas cooler outlet temperature is between 37.34 °C and 43.02 °C with a fixed discharge pressure of 85 bar), however, the maximum liquid fraction can be achieved at the upper limit of the pressure when the enthalpy is less than 341 kJ/kg. K and can be achieved at the lower limit of the pressure when the enthalpy is higher than 399 kJ/kg. K, respectively. In the comparative study on fixed and variable interstage pressure, it was found that there is small difference in cooling COP when the gas cooler outlet temperature is lower than 38.5 °C , while the COPs with variable interstage pressures surpass those with fixed pressures when the gas cooler outlet temperatures are even higher.

Abstract:A novel gas-phase inlet configuration in the natural circulation system instead of the liquid-phase inlet is introduced to cool down a cryogenic pump system from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures, effectively. The experimental apparatus is illustrated and test process is described. Heat transfer and pressure drop data during the cool-down process are recorded and portrayed. By contrast with liquid-phase inlet configuration, experimental results demonstrate that the natural circulation with the gas-phase inlet configuration is an easier and more controllable way to cool down the pump system and maintain it at cryogenic temperatures.
Design on a Two-tage Stirling / Pulse TubeS

Abstract:In the field of military and aerospace, there are strict requirements for cryocoolers, such as high efficiency, compactness, light weight, high reliability, long life and low vibration limits. At present, most mechanical cryocoolers which can be applied in space are Stirling cryocoolers and Stirling type pulse tube cryocoolers. Two-stage cryocoolers are sought-after for aerospace applications, since the performance of single-stage cryocoolers is limited below 35 K, especially at 20 K. Compared with two-stage Stirling cryocoolers, Stirling/pulse tube hybrid cryocoolers eliminate the moving parts of the second stage, which leads to longer life. Moreover, hybrid cryocoolers can achieve higher pressure ratios and efficiency in their regenerator due to a better match in charging pressure between stages. In this study, we designed a two-stage Stirling/pulse tube hybrid cryocooler at 20 K with low temperature inertance tubes and a surge volume to adjust the phase difference. We simulated the performance of the designed cryocooler using the Sage code, and proved that the as-designed cryocooler can provide 0.54 W cooling power at 20 K with 180 W electrical power input. In addition, the effects of the phase difference, mass flow, and pressure ratio in the displacer are also discussed.

Abstract:The rapid development of industrial and information technology is driving the demand to improve the applicability and hydraulic performance of centrifugal pumps in various applications. Enhancing the rotational speed of pumps can simultaneously increase the head and reduce the impeller diameter, thereby reducing the pump size and weight and also improving pump efficiency. This paper reviews the current application status of high-speed pumps using low-temperature thermosensitive fluids, which have been applied in fields such as novel energy-saving cooling technologies, aerospace, chemical industries, and cryogenic engineering. Due to operational constraints and thermal effects, there are inherent challenges that still need to be addressed for high-speed pumps. Based on numerical simulation and experimental research for different working fluids, the results regarding cavitation within the inducer have been categorized and summarized. Improvements to cavitation models, the mechanism of unsteady cavity shedding, vortex generation and cavitation suppression, and the impact of cavitation on pump performance were examined. Subsequently, the thermal properties and cavitation thermal effects of low-temperature thermosensitive fluids were analyzed. In response to the application requirements of pump-driven two-phase cooling systems in data centers, a high-speed refrigerant pump employing hydrodynamic bearings has been proposed. Experimental results indicate that the prototype achieves a head of 56.5 m and an efficiency of 36.1% at design conditions (n = 7000 rpm, Q = 1.5 m3/h). The prototype features a variable frequency motor, allowing for a wider operational range, and has successfully passed both on/off and continuous operation tests. These findings provide valuable insights for improving the performance of high-speed refrigerant pumps in relevant applications.

Abstract:Relatively low cooling power density is one of the main barriers to wider promotion of radiative sky cooling (RSC) technology. Vacuum scheme has been proposed to minimize the non-radiative cooling loss and thus improve the cooling capacity. However, systematic research to elucidate the effect of the vacuum mechanism on the RSC performance is still lacking. Therefore, in the present study, an RSC module with four vacuum structures is proposed to evaluate the performance variation resulting from the vacuum scheme. A quasi-steady state mathematical model is developed to characterize the cooling performance of the four RSC modules under different operation conditions. Results suggested that the vacuum strategy can further elevate the cooling ca-pacity if the typical RSC (TRSC) module itself can realize all-day sub-ambient cooling. However, if the TRSC cannot achieve sub-ambient cooling during peak sun hours, the vacuum scheme will deteriorate rather than ameliorate the cooling performance. On a typical summer day in Shanghai, vacuumization in both cavities en-ables a further temperature reduction of 10.21 degrees C during the nighttime, but this value decreases to only 3.39 degrees C during the daytime. The cooling power enhancement resulting from the vacuum scheme is limited in real-world dynamic operation with the thermal carrier. At a reasonable temperature gap of 5 degrees C between the emitter and ambient air, the extra cooling gain is less than 5.10 W/m2. Hence, considering the addition of energy con-sumption and system complexity caused by the vacuum unit, it may not be advisable to pursue better cooling performance of a stand-alone RSC collector/system through introducing a vacuum strategy, unless realizing a deep stagnation emitter temperature is targeted.

Abstract:The two-stage transcritical CO 2 refrigeration cycle with dedicated dual-subcooling and mechanical recooling is proposed. The inter-stage pressure is critical for such cycle performances; however, it has not been studied exactly. Therefore, the research aim is to disclose the effect of inter-stage pressure on performances of the proposed cycle. The main work consists of four aspects. Firstly, the comparative study is performed to display advantages of the proposed cycle. Secondly, the key temperatures, heat and power consumptions as well as performance indicators for different inter-stage pressures are analyzed in detail, based on the parametric model. Thirdly, the optimal inter-stage pressure for different conditions is obtained by the nonlinear direct search method. Finally, the economic performance is assessed. It is found that the compressor power of the proposed cycle drops by 12%, and the working temperature lower limit is reduced by 11°C. Furthermore, it is considered that the optimal inter-stage pressure is insensitive to the heat source temperature. The novelty lies in illustrating the effect of inter-stage pressure, obtaining trends of the optimal value, and pointing out the system feasibility. The paper is favorable for design and operation optimization of the proposed system.

Selection of Working Fluids on a Cascade Heat Pump Cycle in Application to Freeze-Drying Plant

Abstract:A cascade heat pump system is put forward in application to a freeze-drying plant. The performance of the cascade heat pump cycle is calculated with several kinds of conventional working fluids. Comparison on characteristics in different combination among working fluids is conducted. The results show that R142b, R600a and R600 are suitable for high stage cycle, whereas R290, R134a and R152a are optional for the lower one. The overall performance of the cascade heat pump cycle mainly depends on the performance of high stage cycle, owing to little difference in the cycle performance of low stage in spite of different working fluids. The overall performance of cascade heat pump cycle improves with the promotion of performance in the high stage.
