Abstract:Multi-wavelength phase retrieval provides a competitive solution to lensless holographic imaging that features a low-cost, compact design and high data acquisition speed. However, the existence of phase wraps poses a unique challenge for iterative reconstruction, and the resulting algorithms often suffer from limited generalizability and increased computational complexity. Here, we propose a projected refractive index framework for multi-wavelength phase retrieval that directly recovers the amplitude and unwrapped phase of the object. General assumptions are linearized and integrated into the forward model. Based on an inverse problem formulation, physical constraints and sparsity priors are incorporated, which ensures imaging quality under noisy measurements. We experimentally demonstrate high-quality quantitative phase imaging on a lensless on-chip holographic imaging system using three color LEDs.
Optimized Phase Retrieval Method Based on Multi-Focus Property of Zone Plate

Abstract:As a computational imaging method, phase retrieval has wide applications in image reconstruction, wavefront detection, image encryption, etc. It is an image-based wavefront sensing technique and compared with some other traditional measurement methods such as interferometry, phase retrieval has the advantages of easy operation, high accuracy and strong adaptability to the environment. Conventional phase retrieval algorithms, such as the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, retrieve wavefront by iterative calculation. But limited by finite information of the captured diffractive light filed, the calculation process is easy to fall into local minimum value and stagnation occurs in practical, making it unable to converge to the right wavefront. In this paper, in order to improve this phenomenon, a phase retrieval method combined with the zone plate is proposed in this paper. In this method, zone plates are added into the traditional iterative phase retrieval algorithm to modulate the incident wavefront and combined with the multi-focus property, it can collect more effective information about the wavefront in a single optical intensity distribution image and realize a better wavefront reconstruction result. Simulation results indicate that by taking zone plates into calculation, more effective reconstruction results can be acquired. On the one hand, the recovery residual is smaller compared with conventional lens. On the other, although all of these methods reach to a stagnation, zone-plate-based methods are more efficient to get a better result.

Abstract:Phase retrieval is an attractive optical testing method with a simple experimental arrangement. The sampling grids wave propagation computation based on the FFT operations is usually involved in each iterative process for the classical phase retrieval model. In this paper, a novel non-propagation optimization phase retrieval technique with the FFT-based basis function is proposed to accelerate wavefront measurement. The sampling grids wave diffraction propagation computation is converted to matrix-vector products that have small dimensions to reduce the computational burden. The diffraction basis function based on generalized numerical orthogonal polynomial and two-step Fresnel propagation is deduced, which is suitable for the generally shaped pupil. This paper provides a universal non-propagation framework to accelerate phase retrieval which is applicable to the arbitrarily shaped wavefront measurement.

Abstract:Phase retrieval method is popularly applied in wavefront sensing and quantitative phase imaging, while the stagnation problem in phase retrieval could seriously affect the accuracy and efficiency of the largescale wavefront reconstruction. In this paper, we proposed an arbitrary complex-valued reconstruction method with multi-stage random phase modulation to eliminate the stagnation problem. The random phase modulation maximum breaks any symmetry and enriches information on diffraction patterns. The multistage random phase modulation is achieved by rotating structured light illumination through row-to-column conversion, which not only provides faster convergence speed but also circumvents resampling errors during the calculation. Besides, without an accurate model of illumination function and prior information of under-test wavefront, the arbitrary complex wavefront and the illumination function are both accurately reconstructed, simultaneously. We further demonstrate that our method is effective for the vortex phase plate measurement without introducing extra errors.

Abstract:A phase unwrapping algorithm for interferometric fringes based on the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) technique is proposed. The algorithm can bring about accurate phase unwrapping and good noise suppression simultaneously by incorporating the true phase and its derivative in the state vector estimation through the UKF process. Simulations indicate that the proposed algorithm has better accuracy than some widely employed phase unwrapping approaches in the same noise condition. Also, the time consumption of the algorithm is reasonably acceptable. Applications of the algorithm in our different optical interferometer systems are provided to demonstrate its practicability with good performance. We hope this algorithm can be a practical approach that can help to reduce the systematic errors significantly induced by phase unwrapping process for interferometric measurements such as wavefront distortion testing, surface figure testing of optics, etc.

Abstract:Two-dimensional phase unwrapping (PhU) is one of the most important processing steps in optical phase-shifting interferometry. It aims to reconstruct the continuous phase field, but in fact,,it becomes very difficult to perform the PhU due to the existence of noise, low modulation, under sampling, discontinuities or other defects. For solving the problem, we present a new PhU method which is based on the local parameter-guided fitting plane. It relies on the basic plane-approximated assumption for phase value of local pixels and is guided by our proposed parameter map Modulation-Gradient and Pseudo-Correlation (MGPC) parameter map. This new map is the combination of fringe modulation and wrapped phase, thus it's reliable in estimating the quality or goodness of phase data. Meanwhile, the adoption of fitting plane for the 3x3 window of pixels makes the process of PhU very fast. In applications, we offer the simulated and the experimental data to compare our method with the two previously reported path-following unwrapping algorithms. The unwrapped results show our proposed PhU method not only is efficient, but also has higher noise robustness in recovering the true phase field.

Abstract:In the Multi-intensities phase retrieval processing, the measurement uncertainty of the defocus distance undermines its measurement accuracy. In this paper, using a general phase retrieval experimental arrangement, we propose an adaptive autofocusing nonlinear optimization phase retrieval algorithm based on the extended Nijboer-Zernike (ENZ) theory. This method concurrently accomplishes correction of defocusing position error and the wavefront measurement requiring without additional facility. The numerical experiments show that the proposed method accuracy searching for the optimal defocusing position is superior to 10 μm among different measurement planes. The numerical experiments show that the wavefront measurement accuracy with the proposed method is superior to λ/100 , RMSE.

Abstract:Phase estimation is of great significance for the azimuth estimation using hydrophone arrays. For high-frequency signal sources, it is often challenging to estimate the phase differences between the received signals of the array elements when the element spacing is much larger than the signal wavelength. A phase unwrapping algorithm based on periodicity extension is proposed here, which leverages the periodic nature of the wrapped phase to obtain accurate phase information while avoiding error accumulation. By directly retrieving the phase matrix and applying quality judgment and predictive correction, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated via restoring ambiguity integers. Experimental results validate the performance of the algorithm.

Abstract:The self-calibration algorithm is a powerful phase map reconstruction technique for phase-shifting interferometry with random phase shifts. The existing phase reconstruction algorithms has some restrictions on preconditions including the uniformity of background and the well distributed phase shifts. In this paper, a simple, applicable and accurate phase retrieval algorithm based on linear correlation (LCA) with non-iterative characteristic is proposed to improve this issue. Without pre-filtering, the algorithm searches for optimal linear combination coefficients of the difference intensity map by maximizing the linear correlation, and then phase shifts can be solved by these searched coefficients. Finally, according to the obtained phase shifts, the phase map is readily retrieved by using the matrix form of the linear equations. The whole phase retrieval process has no complicated mathematical transformation, hence it is simply and easily implemented. Good performance of the proposed LCA are verified by reconstructed phase maps from multiple kinds of simulation and experiment interferograms with blind phase shifts, along with the comparisons to that of the popular algorithms. Especially, the proposed algorithm has an excellent accuracy of phase reconstruction when the phase shift distributes unevenly.
Phase Retrieval Wavefront Measurement Model Based on the Numerical Fourier Theory

Abstract:Phase retrieval (PR) is widely applied in wavefront sensing for adaptive optics, diagnosing the aberrations, and wavefront measurement of optics elements. A single lens is often used in PR models to achieve better transmission of optical radiation thereby avoiding loss of high frequency information. In this paper, the sampling requirement of PR wavefront measurement model based on numerical Fourier optical theory is analyzed clearly. First, combined with the Fresnel diffraction theory, the diffraction field of the wavefront after passing through the lens is established. Next, according to the Nyquist sampling theorem, the sampling requirements for the phase factor of wavefront spatial frequency are deduced. Further, according to the relationship between the pixel size of CCD and the sampling pitch of pupil surface, the constraints and applicable range of PR model based on various diffraction transform are discussed quantitatively. The numerical simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of PR model based on the GS algorithm within the analyzed diffraction constraints, which shows that the recovery accuracy of the PR model can reach 0.0025 λ. The established sampling strategy and the constraint theory in this paper would provide a theoretical guidance for full-band wavefront measurement of the PR technology.
Application of Vector Phase Retrieval Model in High Numerical Aperture Optical Systems

Abstract:Phase retrieval (PR) technology can reconstruct the complex amplitude information of the entrance pupil surface from the captured defocus intensity images, and has been successfully applied in many scientific fields such as astronomical observation, biomedical imaging and digital signal restoration. For low numerical aperture (NA) optical systems, the point spread function (PSF) can be calculated using the Fresnel diffraction propagation theory based on Fourier transform, ignoring the polarization field of the light field. However, for high-NA systems, the focal spot not only includes the transverse component, but also the longitudinal component accounts for a proportion that cannot be ignored, thus necessitating a vector model when calculating the PSF in the non-paraxial region. In this paper, the vector diffraction calculation model with arbitrary defocus distance based on the extended Nijboer-Zernike (ENZ) theory is established, which can characterize the light field components in three directions under the Cartesian coordinate system. What's more, a modified Gauss-Newton theory is innovatively applied to the axial phase difference PR model. Compared with the traditional first-order algorithm, the second-order algorithm can reduce the number of iterations. In addition, so as to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, numerical simulations matching the physical model are carried out, the results show that the proposed method can accurately reconstruction the wavefront with high robustness. In conclusion, the established vector PR model in this paper would provide a creatively guidance for wavefront measurement of high-NA optical systems that is significant in the fields of semiconductor lithography, micro imaging and micro manipulation.

Abstract:An improved iterative phase retrieval algorithm is put forward, which makes use of intensity information in several planes, and divides the retrieval process into two steps: profile retrieval and detail retrieval. First the input plane and other three far diffraction planes are needed to retrieve the profile of phase distribution, then the phase detail is available in a similar way. The phase distribution of any one dimensional optical field, including very complicated ones, can be successfully retrieved with this algorithm, and the accuracy of retrieval is greatly enhanced. This algorithm is also very robust. It has convergence independent on the initial phase, and high stability towards additive noise, which are both confirmed by simulations.

Abstract:Phase retrieval is crucial in phase-shifting interferometry and other phase measurement techniques. However, in noisy wrapped phase maps with high steepness, discontinuities arise and cause phase unwrapping errors. To solve this problem, this Letter presents a phase retrieval method based on a simulated wrapped phase. By establishing the correspondence between the simulated and measured interferograms, the difference in wrapped phases between them can be obtained. The difference in wrapped phase map, which has sparse and wide interference fringes, has a higher reliability of phase unwrapping. The proposed method not only possesses high phase retrieval accuracy but it also simplifies the processing of interferograms. Furthermore, the layout of all interferometric systems, the parameters of optical components, and the model of the measured object are known, so the proposed method can be used as a reference for phase retrieval.

Abstract:The multi-plane phase retrieval method provides a budget-friendly and effective way to perform phase imaging, yet it often encounters alignment challenges due to shifts along the optical axis in experiments. Traditional methods, such as using beam splitters to record speckle patterns or adjusting focus with tunable light sources, introduce additional complexity to the setup required for multi-plane phase retrieval. Attempts to address these issues computationally face difficulties due to the variable impact of diffraction, which renders conventional homography techniques inadequate. In our research, we introduce a novel Adaptive Cascade Calibrated (ACC) strategy for multi-plane phase retrieval that overcomes misalignment issues. This technique detects feature points within the refocused sample space and calculates the transformation matrix for neighboring planes on-the-fly to digitally adjust measurements, facilitating alignment-free multi-plane phase retrieval. This approach not only avoids the need for complex and expensive optical hardware but also simplifies the imaging setup, reducing overall costs. The effectiveness of our method is validated through simulations and real-world optical experiments.

Abstract:Due to convenient operation and robust imaging, multi-wavelength phase retrieval has been widely applied in lensfree on-chip digital holographic microscope (LFOCDHM). Nevertheless, the insufficient diffraction variation and small number of measurements on the LFOCDHM make it difficult to eliminate the twin image by multi-wavelength phase retrieval. We propose a multi-wavelength phase retrieval for LFOCDHM based on energy constraint, global update strategy, and vector extrapolation acceleration. Simulations and experiments on the LFOCDHM show that our proposed method realizes efficient elimination effect and robust reconstruction with three wavelengths for illumination while maintaining fast convergence. More importantly, the proposed method is simple and non-parametric. It is believed that the proposed method could provide a promising solution for LFOCDHM.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the phase retrieval problem for recovering a complex signal, given a number of observations on the magnitude of linear measurements. This problem has direct applications in X-ray crystallography, diffraction imaging and microscopy. Motivated by the extensively studied theory of (tight) wavelet frame and its great success in various applications, we propose a wavelet frame based model for phase retrieval using the balanced approach. A hybrid fidelity term is designed to deal with complicated noises and a hybrid penalty term is constructed for different pursuits of sparsity and smoothness. Consequently, a proximal alternating linearization algorithm is developed and its convergence is analyzed. In particular, our proposed algorithm updates both the internal weights in the hybrid penalty term and the penalty parameter balancing the fidelity and penalty terms in a data-driven way. Extensive numerical experiments show that our method is quite competitive with other existing algorithms. On one hand, our method can reconstruct the truth successfully from a small number of measurements even if the phase retrieval problem is ill-posed. On the other hand, our algorithm is very robust to different types of noise, including Gaussian noise, Poisson noise and their mixtures.

Abstract:In optical imaging systems, the aberration is an important factor that impedes realising diffraction-limited imaging. Accurate wavefront sensing and control play important role in modern high-resolution optical imaging systems nowadays. In this study, a simple model-based phase retrieval algorithm is proposed for accurate efficient wavefront sensing with high dynamic range. In the authors' algorithm, a wavefront is represented by the Zernike polynomials, and the Zernike coefficients are solved by the least-squares-based non-linear optimisation method, i.e. the Lederberg-Marquardt algorithm, with multiple phase-diversity images. The numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is capable of retrieving wavefront with a large dynamic range up to seven wavelength and robust to noise. In comparison, the proposed algorithm is more efficient than the existing model-based technique and more accurate than existing Fourier - transformation-based iterative techniques.

Abstract:This paper presents a robust iterative algorithm, known as hybrid Wirtinger flow (HWF), for phase retrieval (PR) of complex objects from noisy diffraction intensities. Numerical simulations indicate that the HWF method consistently outperforms conventional PR methods in terms of both accuracy and convergence rate in multiple phase modulations. The proposed algorithm is also more robust to low oversampling ratios, loose constraints, and noisy environments. Furthermore, compared with traditional Wirtinger flow, sample complexity is largely reduced. It is expected that the proposed HWF method will find applications in the rapidly growing coherent diffractive imaging field for high-quality image reconstruction with multiple modulations, as well as other disciplines where PR is needed.
