Abstract:Aiming to obtain a martensite-free microstructure of Ti–Zr alloys with a combination of enhanced deformability and improved mechanical properties for dental application, two high Zr-containing Ti-based alloys were prepared with commercially pure titanium as a control. The effects of Zr addition on the deformation mechanism, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. After thermo-mechanical processing and cold deformation, samples were characterized using Vickers microhardness, tensile tests, X-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD and TEM examinations revealed that the increasing Zr addition suppressed the deformation twining and favored the deformation-induced face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, the corresponding reason was discussed. There is a competition between the deformation twin and FCC phase. The two types of FCC phase were simultaneously found with orientation relationships (ORs) of Basal-type: <11–20>HCP//<110>FCC and {0001}HCP//{111}FCC and Prismatic-type: <0001>HCP//<001>FCC and {10-10}HCP//{110}FCC. This phase transformation enhanced the deformability during processing. As the Zr addition increased, the microhardness, mechanical strength and plasticity are increased concurrently. The interactions of twins were found to cause brittle fracture of Ti20Zr alloy. Based on the texture analysis, the activated slip systems of FCC phase were determined via calculating the Schmid factor. The FCC phase not only provided additional slip systems but also impeded dislocation slip effectively, improving the strength-plasticity of Ti30Zr alloy. The findings will provide a novel approach associated with the strengthening-toughening mechanism of metallic materials.
PREPARATION AND TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF TiO2-ZrO2 THIN FILMS

Abstract:High oriented TiO2-ZrO2 thin films were prepared with sol-gel process followed by dip-coating the ethanol solution of zirconium oxychloride and titanium tetrachloride. The microstruc-ture, morphology and tribological properties of TiO2-ZrO2 thin films were investigated using AFM, XPS, XRD and dynamic-static tribometer. The results show that the TiO2 -ZrO2 films are dense, homogeneous and in a complete tetragonal phase; which display an excellent antiwear and friction reduction performance. Under 0.5 N applied load, the friction coefficient is only 0.14~0.20 and the an-tiwear life is more than 5000 sliding cycles for the TiO2-ZrO2/AISI 52100 steel and TiO2-ZrO2/Si3N4 systems.

Abstract:In this study, two medium Zr-containing Ti-based alloys with commercially pure titanium as control were systematically investigated to assess their potential biomedical application. After samples subjected to TMP and CR, it was found that the Zr addition significantly affected the microstructure, phase constitutions, mechanical properties and cytocompatibility. The microstructural results showed that increasing Zr concentrations resulted in more refined grains. Furthermore, Zr changed the phase constitution: CR Ti–20Zr was formed by the single α-phase while CR Ti–30Zr alloy was formed by the coexistence of α and deformation-induced FCC phases. The P-type FCC phase was dominant and more prone to occur than the B-type one. The mechanical tests demonstrated that the increasing Zr content led to a simultaneous increase in micro-hardness, strength and plasticity of CR samples due to the combined effects of solution strengthening, work hardening and the FCC phase. The SEM fractography indicated that the brittle fracture of CR Ti–20Zr due to deformation twins and ductile fracture of CR Ti–30Zr because of FCC phase. Furthermore, Ti–Zr alloys presented comparable cytocompatibility to the CP-Ti control based on cell viability, proliferation and intracellular O2− content of MSCs. Specifically, alkaline phosphatase activity in BMSCs were significantly higher for grain refined CR Ti–30Zr. Considering all these results, CR Ti–30Zr alloy exhibited the optimal comprehensive performance to be potential dental materials.

Abstract:The microstructures and hydrogen storage properties of (Ti-Cr)(45-x)V55Zrx (x=1, 3, 5, 7; Ti/Cr=0.7-0.75) alloys were investigated systematically. The XRD and SEM analysis show that the alloy with Zr content of x=1 consists of a V-based solid solution main phase with bcc structure and an alpha-Zr secondary phase; as x=3-7, the alloys consist of a V-based solid solution main phase and an alpha-ZrCr2 secondary phase. It is found that with the increase of Zr content in the alloys, the activation behavior is improved; the hydrogen absorption capacity at 20 degrees C and the effective hydrogen desorption capacity at 80 degrees C all increase first and then decrease, while the maximum values are obtained at x=5; the hysteresis of the P-C isotherm decreases and its slope increases. Among these alloys studied, (Ti-Cr)(40)V55Zr5 alloy has a good overall property, such as-the activation behavior of 2 cycles, the hydrogen absorption capacity of 403 ml/g at room temperature and the effective desorption capacity of 230 ml/g at 80 degrees C.

Abstract:The effect of Ti addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Mg-Gd-Y-Zn alloys was investigated. Ti exhibited a refinement effect comparable to that of Zr in the as-cast condition. With the increase of Ti content, the phenomenon of grain refinement and homogenization was more obvious, especially for solution-treated alloys. The finest grains were obtained with 0.8wt% Ti and were composed of α-Mg and refined Mg5(Gd, Y, Zn) in the as-cast structure. Zr and Ti could be found along the grain boundaries. After solid solution treatment, Zr was still concentrated in the vicinity of the grain boundaries, while Ti was uniformly dispersed in the α-Mg matrix. The Ti-refined alloys exhibited superior grain size stability and mechanical properties. In addition, the mechanical properties of the considered alloys were improved due to the transition from Mg5(Gd, Y, Zn) to long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase during the heat treatment. Subsequent aging at 220℃ resulted in remarkable precipitation hardening and consequently the strength was significantly improved. The Ti-refined alloy exhibited higher ultimate tensile strength and elongation than the alloy containing the same amount of Zr, with an increase of 20MPa and 29%, respectively.

Abstract:Ti10V84−xFe6Zrx (x=1, 2, 4, 6, 8) hydrogen storage alloys were prepared by induction melting with magnetic levitation, and the effects of Zr content on the microstructures and hydrogen storage properties have been investigated systematically. The results show that the alloy with x=1 has a single V-based solid solution phase with BCC structure, while other alloys with x=2–8 consist of a BCC main phase and a C14 type Laves secondary phase, and the abundance ratio of the secondary phase increases with increasing Zr content. As the Zr content in the alloy increases, the activation behavior is improved, but the hydrogen absorption and desorption capacities decrease gradually. For the alloy with the Zr content of x=1, the best overall hydrogen storage properties are obtained.

Abstract:The Al-Zr-Ti system has recently been suggested as a candidate for Al-based materials capable of retaining a high strength during a long term exposure to high temperatures up to 700 K. The Al-1.25 at.% (Zr+Ti) alloys with a variable Zr : Ti ratio were rapidly solidified using the melt spinning method. The solidification structure was found inhomogeneous along the direction perpendicular to the ribbon plane and dependent on the Zr : Ti ratio. The microhardness values were correlated with the structure and chemical composition. The presence of second phase particles in the as melt-spun ribbons was proved by SAXS experiments. X-ray and electron diffraction experiments enabled to identify most of particles as the metastable Al3(ZrxTi1−x) phase with the cubic L12 structure. Especially in the Zr-rich alloys, these particles precipitated preferentially in a fan-shaped morphology. The grains of the Ti-rich alloys were nearly free of these particles.

Abstract:Titanium is well-known for its high strength, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. For further improvement of its mechanical properties, it is alloyed with other elements, such as zirconium. In this study, pre-mixed pure Ti powder and ZrH2 particles were employed to prepare extruded Ti–Zr alloys with a low hydrogen content via dehydrogenation after sintering. The Zr solutes were uniformly dissolved in the α-Ti matrix by applying the optimal conditions for homogenization and water-quenching heat treatment. The synthesized Ti–Zr alloys consisted of the equiaxed fine α-Ti grains via dynamic recrystallization during extrusion. When the ZrH2 particle content was less than 10 wt%, the extruded Ti–Zr alloys showed a large tensile elongation of more than 25% at room temperature with a yield stress of approximately 850 MPa. In the case of Ti–10% ZrH2 powder, the mean α-Ti grain size was 2.7 μm, which was smaller than that of extruded pure Ti (3.5 μm). By applying the Hall–Petch equation for grain refinement and Labusch model for Zr solid solution to quantitatively estimate the increase in the yield stress, it was clarified that both factors had an equal effect for Ti–5 and –10 wt% ZrH2 powder even with the dominance of solid-solution strengthening by Zr solutes for alloys with small Zr content.

Abstract:The exceptional super elasticity and corrosion-resistance of Ni-Ti alloys have attracted a lot of attention and interest lately for a wide range of applications, and complex alloy components could be prepared effectively by different preparation techniques. Ni(P), Ni-Ti(P), Ni-Zr(P), and Ni-Ti -Zr(P) binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys were coated on mild steel by electroless deposition which is a method of plating metallic films on a substrate by the reduction of metallic complex ions in solution with the aid of reducing agent from an alkaline bath. The ternary Ni-Ti-Zr(P) alloy is considered to be one of the most promising high-temperature SMAs. SEM, XRD and EDS were used to examine the morphology, phase composition and elemental composition which demonstrate the microstructure of the deposits. The mechanical characteristics of the samples were examined through scratch test and micro hardness analysis and the value increased from 261 HV200 to 405 HV200 and that the coefficient of friction raised significantly from 0.23 to 3.5 owing to the presences of added elements in Ni(P) matrix. Polarization analysis and EIS were tested to evaluate the corrosion properties of coated samples in a non-deaerated 3.5 %wt. (NaCl) solution. The outcomes indicate that as the amount of Ti-Zr elements in the bath raised, the corrosion potential became more positive and the corrosion current density decreased to 14.903 μA/cm2. Furthermore, Ni-Ti-Zr(P) alloy coating strengthens corrosion resistance in comparison to Ni(P).

Abstract:A series of Ti–xZr alloys with Zr contents ranging from 5 to 20wt% was prepared and the effects of Zr addition on the microstructure, physical properties, and corrosion behavior of Ti alloys were investigated. The phase and microstructures were characterized using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Ti–xZr alloys exhibited α-Ti structure at Zr content of 20wt% or below. Commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) was used as a control. We also investigated the effects of alloying element Zr on the mechanical property, oxidation protection ability, and corrosion behavior of Ti–xZr binary alloys. The physical properties and corrosion behavior of Ti–xZr alloys were sensitive to the Zr content. The addition of Zr did contribute to the hardening of cp-Ti due to solid-solution strengthening of α-Ti. Ti–xZr alloys containing up to 10wt% Zr resulted in good oxidation resistance, while Ti–xZr alloys with above 10wt% Zr demonstrated higher oxidation weight gain than cp-Ti. Electrochemical experiments showed that the Ti–xZr alloys exhibited better corrosion resistance compared to that of cp-Ti.

Abstract:The decomposition behavior of ZrO2 particles and uniform distribution of Zr and O solutes were investigated by employing in situ scanning electron microscope-electron backscatter diffraction (SEM-EBSD) analysis and thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) to optimize the process conditions in preparing Ti-Zr-O alloys from the pre-mixed pure Ti powder and ZrO2 particles. The extruded Ti-Zr-O alloys via homogenization and water-quenching treatment were found to have a uniform distribution of Zr and O solutes in the matrix and also showed a remarkable improvement in the mechanical properties, for example, the yield stress of Ti-3 wt.% ZrO2 sample (1144.5 MPa) is about 2.5 times more than the amount of yield stress of pure Ti (471.4 MPa). Furthermore, the oxygen solid-solution was dominant in the yield stress increment, and the experimental data agreed well with the calculation results estimated using the Hall-Petch equation and Labusch model.

Recently synthesized (Zr1-xTix)2AlC (0 - x - 1) solid solutions: Theoretical study of the effects of M mixing on physical properties

Abstract:The effects of M atomic species mixing on the physical properties of newly synthesized MAX phase (Zr1-xTix)2AlC solid solutions have been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The lattice constants in good accord with the experimental results, are found to decrease with Ti content. The elastic constants, Cij, and the other polycrystalline elastic moduli have been calculated. The elastic constants satisfy the mechanical stability conditions of these solid solutions. The constants C11, C33 and C44 are found to increase with Ti contents up to x = 0.67, thereafter these decrease slightly. A reverse trend is followed by C12 and C13. The elastic moduli are also found to increase up to x = 0.67, beyond which these moduli go down slightly. Pughs ratio and Poissons ratio both confirm the brittleness of (Zr1-xTix)2AlC. Different anisotropy factors revealed the anisotropic character of these solid solutions. A non-vanishing value of the electronic energy density of states (EDOS) at the Fermi level suggests that (Zr1-xTix)2AlC are metallic in nature. A mixture of covalent, ionic and metallic bonding has been indicated from the electronic structure with dominant covalent bonding due to hybridization of Zr-4d states and C-2p states. The variation of elastic stiffness and elastic parameters with x is seen to be correlated with partial DOS (PDOS) and charge density distribution. The calculated Debye temperature and minimum thermal conductivity are found to increase with Ti contents, while melting temperature is the highest for x = 0.67. The solid solution with x = 0.67 shows improved mechanical and thermal properties compared to that of the two end members Zr2AlC and Ti2AlC. The study of charge transport properties of (Zr1-xTix)2AlC reveals the metallic nature with saturated resistivity. The maximum power factor is obtained at 400 K for (Zr1-xTix)2AlC.

Abstract:Due to the poor activation performance and kinetics of Ti50V25Cr25 alloys, the element Zr was added to improve the phase structure of the alloy and achieve a high-performance hydrogen storage alloy. The Ti50-xV25Cr25Zrx (x = 0, 5, 7, and 9) system alloys were prepared by arc melting. The alloys were analyzed using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The hydrogen storage capabilities of the alloys were also obtained by the Sievert volumetric method. The results indicated that the alloy with Zr added had a combination of the C15 Laves phase and the BCC phase, whereas the Zr-free alloy had a BCC single phase. The partial replacement of Zr with Ti resulted in an increase in the lattice parameters of the main phase. The hydrogen storage kinetic performance and activation of the alloys both significantly improved with an increasing Zr concentration. The time to reach 90% of the maximum hydrogen storage capacity decreased to 2946 s, 230 s, and 120 s, respectively, with the increases in Zr concentration. The initial hydrogen absorption content of the alloys increased and then decreased after the addition of the element Zr. The second phase expanded with an increasing Zr concentration, which in turn decreased the abundance of the BCC main phase. The Ti43V25Cr25Zr7 alloy showed good cycle stability and hydrogen-desorption performance, and it could absorb 90% of the maximum hydrogen storage capacity in around 230 s. The maximum hydrogen-absorption capacity of the alloy was 2.7 wt%. The diffusion activation energy of hydrogen desorption dropped from 102.67 kJ/mol to 92.62 kJ/mol.

Abstract:Precipitation strengthening of silicides plays an important role in improving the creep resistance of high‐temperature titanium alloys. The oversize and concentrated silicides remarkably reduce the ductility of the alloys, which shorten the serving life of the key components in aerospace engines and gas turbines. To investigate the alloying effect on the stability of Ti 5 Si 3 , the enthalpy of solution for IIIB–VIB and IIIA–IVA elements in Ti 5 Si 3 , α matrix, and β phase are calculated and compared. It is proposed that Zr and Hf stabilize Ti 5 Si 3 and promote the nucleation and refinement of silicide particles. The β stabilizers and simple metals destabilize Ti 5 Si 3 and would suppress the precipitation of Ti 5 Si 3 .

Abstract:The synthesis of Group IV metal complexes that contain a tetradentate dianionic [OSSO]-carborane ligand [(HOC(6)H(2)tBu(2)-4,6)(2)(CH2)(2)S2C2-(B10H10)] (1a) is described. Reactions of TiCl4 and Ti(OiPr)(4) with the [OSSO]-type ligand 1a afford six-coordinated titanium complex [Ti(OC(6)H(2)tBu(2)-4,6)(2)(CH2)(2)S2C2-(B10H10)Cl-2] (2a) and four-coordinated titanium complex [Ti(OC(6)H(2)tBu(2)-4,6)(2)-(CH2)(2)S2C2(B10H10)(OiPr)(2)] (2b), respectively. ZrCl4 and HfCl4 were treated with 1a to give six-coordinated zirconium complex [Zr(OC(6)H(2)tBu(2)-4,6)(2)-(CH2)(2)S2C2(B10H10)Cl-2(thf)(2)] (2c) and six-coordinated hafnium complex [Hf(OC(6)H(2)tBu(2)-4,6)(2)(CH2)(2)S2C2-(B10H10)Cl-2] (2d). All the complexes were fully characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. In addition, X-ray structure analyses were performed on complexes 2a and 2b and reveal the expected different coordination geometry due to steric hindrance effects. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy was performed on complexes 2c and 2d to describe the coordination chemistry of this ligand around Zr and Hf. Six-coordinated titanium complex 2a showed good activity toward ethylene polymerization as well as toward copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) as cocatalyst (up to 1060 kg[mol(Ti)](-1)h(-1) in the case of 10 atm of ethylene pressure).

To expand the composition design of alloys, herein, the compositions of novel Ti–Co–Ni–Zr complex concentrated alloys were obtained by the proportional mixing of Ti 2 Co intermetallics and Ni 64 Zr 36 binary eutectic. The theory and method of this new alloy design are also discussed. The as-cast Ti 28 Co 14 Ni 37.12 Zr 20.88 , Ti 30 Co 15 Ni 35.2 Zr 19.8 , and Ti 32 . Co 16 Ni 33.3 Zr 18.7 alloys were composed of body-centered cubic TiNi and Ti 2 Ni phases. The Ti 28 Co 14 Ni 37.12 Zr 20.88 alloy exhibited high yield strength (2 164 MPa) and compressive strength (2 539 MPa) under quasi-static compression at roomtemperature. The high strength of Ti 28 Co 14 Ni 37.12 Zr 20.88 alloy is related to the precipitation of Ti 2 Ni along the grain boundary and the precipitation in the crystal. This paper validates that using the proportional mixing method of intermetallics and eutectic alloy is an effective method to design complex concentrated alloys with high strength.

Abstract:The effect of multi-stage solution on microstructure and properties was studied in Al–10.5Zn–2.05Mg–1.02Cu–0.2Zr–0.923Ti alloy extrusion. The microstructure, corrosion resistance, plasticity, hardness, and tensile properties of alloy were evaluated using metallographic microscope, X-ray diffraction analysis, micro-hardness tester, and microcomputer-controlled universal testing machine. The results show that the tensile strength and corrosion resistance of the alloy improve first and then deteriorate with increase of solution temperature and holding time, and 2# sample has the best mechanical properties (tensile strength is 711.159 MPa and elongation is 13%) and highest corrosion resistance of alloys. Furthermore, 2# sample has more uniform grains, more equiaxed crystals, and the low-angle grain boundaries, and the dislocation density and the dislocation strengthening contribution of alloy are relatively high. However, the grain grows and the dislocations were consumed with the increase of solution time and temperature, resulting in a decrease in dislocation density and dislocation strengthening contribution. It is indicated that alloy can achieve better comprehensive properties under solution treatment process (450 °C × 2 h + 460 °C × 2 h + 470 °C × 2 h + 480 °C × 2 h).

Abstract:Porous Ti–Al intermetallic compounds were successfully fabricated through powder metallurgy process with Zn as space holders. The influence of Al content and cold compacting pressure on samples of microstructure, phase identification, expansion behavior, open porosity and density were investigated. The results show that Ti–3 wt% Al alloy possessed high open porosity (55.47%) and exhibited three-dimensional connected pore channels. Therefore, the research placed emphasis on the Ti–63 wt% Al with 20 vol.% Zn at different cold compacting pressure. It was found that in the presence of Zn, the morphology of products changed from irregular round spheres to laminated shape, but the phase composition always remained as a single Al 3 Ti phase. Furthermore, the volume expansion rate increased continuously with the increase in cold compacting pressure, and the axial, radial expansion rate also followed the same law. The open porosity of porous materials and the initial density of green billet also increased, reaching 76.74% and 3.52 g cm −3 , respectively, but the density of samples after sintering showed a linear decreasing trend, with the lowest being only 0.89 g cm −3 .

Abstract:For this study, Zr-substituted BaTi 2 O 5 particles were synthesized using an aqueous solution method with peroxidized polytitanic acid as the starting material. After Zr/Ti heteropolyacids were synthesized by complexing Zr with polytitanic acid (Ti-IPA) in aqueous solution using ZrOCl 2 , the obtained Zr/Ti heteropolyacids were mixed with barium hydroxide. Subsequently, the precipitate was dried and heat-treated at 1100 °C for 10 h. Thereby, we obtained single-phase Ba(Zr,Ti) 2 O 5 powder. Using this method, BaTi 2 O 5 was synthesized with up to 6 mol% Zr solid solution on Ti sites. These results were evaluated using XRD and XRF. The crystal structure and structural transition of the resulting Ba(Zr,Ti) 2 O 5 were evaluated using Raman measurements. All Ba(Zr,Ti) 2 O 5 samples showed a structural transition. The Curie temperatures T c of BaTi 2 O 5 , BaZr 0.034 Ti 0.966 O 5 , and BaZr 0.059 Ti 0.941 O 5 were, respectively, 480, 450, and 430 °C.
