Abstract:The era of SoC has come. As a result, the corresponding EDA tools are urgently needed in the field of system design. CoCentric is such an EDA tool released by Synopsys. There are two parallel working flows during the procedure of system design using CoCentric. They are synthesis and verification. Synthesis is a methodology emphasizing on the implementation of the system design with hardware language description, while verification focuses on the consistent functioning of the whole system at very step of the synthesis in the course of design simulation. At last, an elaborate example is demonstrated concerning system design of a chip used for information security. Partition between software portion and hardware portion of SoC is also discussed.

Abstract:SOC (System-on-chip) is one kind of large scale and complex IC driven by high clock frequency. The traditional method of externally providing power to SOC can not guarantee its proper operation because of the unstable external power supply. Accordingly, a scheme is proposed to integrate a power resource management module into SOC to manage the external power resource dynamically as to supply SOC chip with stable power, detect the low voltage and protect the data in RAM from losing. Design methodology of power management module is also given. Circuit simulation result shows that the variation of output voltage of proposed power resource management module is within 0.2592V when external power supply changes from 3.6V to 2.7V.

Abstract:A comprehensive survey on main research topics in the area of Y-chart SoC system level is introduced. Three catalogs of research aspects, including hardwaresoftware co-design, design reuse and high-level design with physical information, are discussed in detail. From the view point of design methodologies and techniques, present system-level design work are summarized into the following three design approaches: SpecC-based design methodology (from top to down and stepwise-refinement), component-based multi-processor SoC design methodology (from bottom to up and building block), and platform-based design methodology (meeting-in-the-middle and divide-and-conquer). Based on these generally accepted achievements, the relevant fundamental ideas, specification languages, design models and key techniques are also analyzed and compared in this survey. Some open research issues in the system-level design area are pointed out, and some future research directions are presented.

Abstract:Integrated circuit design has been developed into the VDSM-based SOC era. SOC means the whole system can be integrated into one chip. However, SOC design with VDSM technology encounters difficulties arising from large scale, complexity and high clock frequency. These problems cannot be overcome by traditional design process because of its design-scale limitation and slow convergence of timing. Traditional flatten layout method are not robust enough to deal with large quantity of data coming out from design process. Therefore, a complete SOC design process with associated hierarchical timing-driven layout method is proposed, in which top-down constraint budget and timing-driven strategy are used to obtain timing convergence, while hierarchical module partitioning can cope with the large scale of SOC. The result of 600k 8VSB chip design experiment with 0.25um technology provided a speed of 108Mhz.

Abstract:As the mainstream design of IC at present,various SOC systems share much commonality,and there exist many commercialized IP cores.However,the customization needs of embedded systems call for a lot of time and efforts on system structure design and transplant of BIOS and OS.Through the research on the architectures of various SOC systems,an embedded SOC system is presented,which features have comprehensive functions,simple structure,and easy extension potential.Only slight modification and adjustment is needed for this SOC system to meet the needs of most embedding applications.And a series of hardware and software solutions are offered,too.

Abstract:As silicon CMOS technology is scaled into the nanometer regime, a whole system can be integrated into one chip. At the same time, the computer-aided design technology is challenged by two major features: the ever-increasing design complexity of gigascale integration and complicated physical effects inherent from the nanoscale technology. In this paper, a new methodology of integrating High Level Synthesis and Floorplan together is presented. The whole design flow is divided into two phases: a fast searching space scan procedure and a detailed solution optimize procedure. The searching space of integrating HLS and Floorplan is first “smoothed” by a “Behavior Information based Cluster Algorithm”, and then a fast scan of this smoothed searching space is proceeded. The result of the first phrase will be used as the start point of the detailed optimize procedure. The experimental result show that the methodology is efficient.

Abstract:In SOC era, the ultra high power density of the chip, together with the greedy demand of the mobile market for low power, makes low power design increasingly important. The design for low power, including its background, principle and techniques, is systematically described, with emphasis on system-level power optimization technologies targeted for SOC's. Through analysis of the existing study results by various abstract levels and system functions, a severe deficiency of insufficient global optimality is discovered. A constructive idea for system power optimization and a design flow based on hardware/software co-design are presented. Finally, the development trend of the low power design of SOC's in the future is discussed.

Abstract:Our world is an analog world, and the ways in which we interact with it are also analog. Today, more integrated circuits and systems contain analog components. Meanwhile, digital functionalities are increasingly put into analog systems to enhance their performance. System-On-Chip designs consisting of analog, digital, RF and software blocks are commonplace. New technologies allow for the integration of as many features as possible on one or more silicon die. At the same time, integrated systems have had to become more flexible to cover a wider range of use-cases, as heavily increasing design and production set-up costs have made highly targeted application-specific design more difficult to justify. Also, the reliability of today's electronic systems has been challenged by the increasing probability of device failure as the feature sizes of integrated circuits are pushed well into the nanometer scale range and three-dimensional geometry is explored to extend VLSI process potential. The combined effect of a continually increased presence of analog circuits and IP blocks in a system as well as the coupling between densely integrated components/subsystems has an impact to the operation reliability and performance that is too complex at the transistor level. Electronic system level design/verification is now an established approach at most of the world's leading semiconductor companies and is being adopted increasingly to solve the complex mixed-signal System-On-Chip (SoC) problem at early stages, leading to a shorter design period. From noise, some typical mixed-signal circuits, to a whole application SoC—a Near Field Communication system, SystemC/SystemC-AMS shows its powerful feature as an ESL design language. In this dissertation, I will discuss examples modeled at the system level in detail. On the other hand, it is often difficult to develop a high-level model at the appropriate abstraction level that can ensure the best trade-off between architectural details and simulation speed. To this end, engineers perform simulations at different levels. Because of that, we developed a Cross-Layer Simulator which is shown in this document. This co-simulator, based upon Ngspice and SystemC/SystemC-AMS, can handle a mixed-signal SoC at different abstraction levels in one model and simulation. Case studies on different circuits prove its ability to function well in terms of both precision and speed for circuits/systems simulation.

Abstract:System prototyping is an important step in embedded system design, it can be used to validate the system functionality, performance and real time response to environment. A platform containing a microcomputer and a prototyping board is built for system-on-a-chip prototyping. A simple system-on-a-chip prototype reacting with its environment is built demonstrating the usage of the platform. The on chip system is built on prototyping board. The system environment is modeled with SystemC running on microcomputer. SystemC is a simulation environment that can be used to model hardware and software system. Some problems encountered during system prototyping is discussed. Further research on system-on-a-chip prototyping platform is presented

Abstract:On-chip micronetworks, designed with a layered methodology, will meet the distinctive challenges of providing functionally correct, reliable operation of interacting system-on-chip components. A system on chip (SoC) can provide an integrated solution to challenging design problems in the telecommunications, multimedia, and consumer electronics domains. Much of the progress in these fields hinges on the designers' ability to conceive complex electronic engines under strong time-to-market pressure. Success will require using appropriate design and process technologies, as well as interconnecting existing components reliably in a plug-and-play fashion. Focusing on using probabilistic metrics such as average values or variance to quantify design objectives such as performance and power will lead to a major change in SoC design methodologies. Overall, these designs will be based on both deterministic and stochastic models. Creating complex SoCs requires a modular, component-based approach to both hardware and software design. Despite numerous challenges, the authors believe that developers will solve the problems of designing SoC networks. At the same time, they believe that a layered micronetwork design methodology will likely be the only path to mastering the complexity of future SoC designs.

Abstract:Being aimed at the design for system on chip(SOC) with deep submicron technology, this paper presents a new software/hardware co-design method at high level of abstraction. We use this method to design the reduced instruction set computing (RISC) core in the moving pictures expert group (MPEG) video encoder. The synthesis information using electronic design automation (EDA) tools about area, power, and timing shows that this method has the advantage of fitting special architecture into algorithms easily.

Abstract:Aiming at the shortcoming of the traditional large scale integrated circuit synthesis method, a novel SystemC electronic system level synthesis (SLS) method is proposed. The heterogeneous multiprocessor system on a chip (MPSoC) hardware architecture which is the target for a system level synthesis system and a SLS synthesis flow are described. The SLS method supports a SystemC untimed model as its design entry and adopts the target MPSoC hardware architecture that has a multiprocessor as the controller and algorithmic IPs as computation accelerators. Furthermore, a system level synthesis integrated development environment (IDE) is implemented, and a MPSoC processor is developed with the IDE. Experimental results show that the proposed synthesis method improves the efficiency of software/hardware mixed MPSoC systems effectively and reduces the time put on the market.

Abstract:This paper reviews the evolution of methodologies and tools for modeling, simulation, and design of digital electronic system-on-chip (SoC) implementations, with a focus on industrial electronics applications. Key technological, economic, and geopolitical trends are presented at the outset, before reviewing SoC design methodologies and tools. The fundamentals of SoC design flows are laid out. The paper then exposes the crucial role of the intellectual property (IP) industry in the relentless improvements in performance, power, area, and cost (PPAC) attributes of SoCs. High abstraction levels in design capture and increasingly automated design tools (e.g., for verification and validation, synthesis, place, and route) continue to push the boundaries. Aerospace and automotive domains are included as brief case studies. This paper also presents current and future trends in SoC design and implementation including the rising, evolution, and usage of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, techniques, and tools, which promise even greater PPAC optimizations.

Abstract:In this paper, we summarize and analyze main challenges towards system-on-package (SoP) integration with a broad perspective from system design to technology development. We see that the future SoP faces a main challenge of changed system architecture that will be different from today’s personal computer or PC-based systems. It is likely that communication-network based system architectures will be interesting to future SoP platforms. Second, we find that a major paradigm shift will occur in design methodology for SoP integration that emphasizes a coherent co-design of chip, package and system in a mixed signal environment and in combination with new issues such as virtual components integration. On the technology side, the major challenges will be power dissipation and system cooling, low-cost and thermal-matched high-density interconnect substrates, as well as low-cost passive components integration. Finally, we present some research examples that aim to cope with these new challenges on a strategic basis.

Abstract:The inherent concurrency and heterogeneity of the system on chip,which make it hard to uniformly model the system,prevent the design efficiency from being improved.After the analysis of the nowadays system-level design methods,it is obvious that the design efficiency could hardly be improved farther with these methods,because they can not be used to differentiate and represent the more de-tailed characteristics in common between different designs,therefore restrict the reuse of design.So the representing models and the in-fluence upon reuse of object-oriented design,software engineering,formal semantic and system level EDA are discussed.After that,the characteristics used to depict the system on chip are selected and they are availing to improve design efficiency.
