Abstract:A novel design of a sheet beam electron gun, suitable for a Ka-band microfabricated traveling-wave tube (TWT), is described in this paper. Simulations take into account emission from a CNT field-emitter array (FEA) and the formation of the sheet beam. The rectangular FEA cathode of 2250×300 µm 2 area produces a 10 mA sheet electron beam which is compressed into a 350×150 µm 2 area. The configuration of the focusing electrodes and the anode is suitable for microfabrication. For an anode voltage of 3.7 KV, the presented simulation results show a uniform beam at the anode output.

Abstract:A novel type of the retarding field energy analyzer(RFEA)was developed and fabricated to characterize the electron beam of the traveling wave tube(TWT). The RFEA mainly consists of a negatively biased ring-shaped electrode, a square hole for electron sampling, and a collector. The annular retarding electrode is used to eliminate possible defocusing. The RFEA was simulated with software package CST particle studio. The simulated results show that the RFEA has a fairly high resolution, and is capable of providing good spatial and temporal information of electron beam in the low energy range(a few keV to 10 keV). The electron beam from the gun operating at a perveance of 0.45 μP for wideband TWT was evaluated with the RFEA. The tested data were found to agree very well with the simulated results.

Abstract:We present electronically controlled field emission characteristics of arrays of individually ballasted carbon nanotubes synthesized by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition on silicon-on-insulator substrates. By adjusting the source-drain potential we have demonstrated the ability to controllable limit the emission current density by more than 1 order of magnitude. Dynamic control over both the turn-on electric field and field enhancement factor have been noted. A hot electron model is presented. The ballasted nanotubes are populated with hot electrons due to the highly crystalline Si channel and the high local electric field at the nanotube base. This positively shifts the Fermi level and results in a broad energy distribution about this mean, compared to the narrow spread, lower energy thermalized electron population in standard metallic emitters. The proposed vertically aligned carbon nanotube field-emitting electron source offers a viable platform for X-ray emitters and displays applications that require accurate and highly stable control over the emission characteristics.

Abstract:Field Emitting Arrays (FEAs) are a promising alternative to the conventional cathodes in different vacuum electronic devices such as traveling wave tubes, electron accelerators and etc. Electrical gating and modulation capabilities, together with the ability to produce stable and homogeneous electron beam in high electric field environment are the key requirements for their practical application. Due to relatively high gate capacitance, fast controlling of FEA emission is difficult. In order to achieve sub-nanosecond, electrically controlled, FEA based electron emission a special pulsed gate driver was developed. Bipolar high voltage (HV)pulses are used to rapidly inject and remove charge form FEA gate electrode controlling quickly electron extraction gate voltage. Short electron emission pulses (<600 ps FWHM) were observed in low and high gradient (up to 12 MV/m) environment. First attempts were made to combine FEA based electron emission with radio frequency acceleration structures (1.5 GHz) using pulsed preacceleration. The gate driver design together with low inductance FEA chip contact system is described. The results obtained in low and high gradient experimental setups are presented and discussed.

Abstract:The performance of the electron beam will greatly affect the performance of the traveling wave tube (TWT). The electron gun and focusing system (EGFS) are key parts of TWT, which complete the electron beam’s generation, shaping, focusing, and transmission. The EGFS of 0.67 THz TWT is simulated and analyzed in this article. First, the initial parameters of the electron gun were obtained using the Tiwary method and MATLAB. After further simulation and debugging, the circular electron beam electron gun was designed with an operating voltage of 23.8 kV and a current of 18 mA; the filling ratio at the waist is only 50%. Second, to ensure the electron beam’s stable transmission and reduce the device’s size and weight, the periodic closed magnetic (PCM) focusing structure matching the electron gun was adopted, making the stable transmission distance of the electron beam greater than 30 mm, and it has good laminar flow. Finally, the sensitivity and thermal effect analyses were carried out to make the designed EGFS meet the processing requirements.

Abstract:Field electron emission behavior of individual multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), that are elements of a vertically aligned array grown on a Si wafer, were analyzed with a scanning anode field emission microscope. The electron emission of each MWNT followed the conventional Fowler-Nordheim field emission mechanism after their apexes were freed from the erratic adsorption species using a conditioning process at room temperature. The conditioning process led to stable emission currents and reduced their variations DeltaI/I to less than 30% between different MWNTs of the array. This opens the possibility for using MWNTs in an array as independent electron sources for massively parallel microguns. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The overall aim of this work is to produce arrays of field emitting microguns, based on carbon nanotubes, which can be utilised in the manufacture of large area field emitting displays, parallel e-beam lithography systems and electron sources for high frequency amplifiers. This paper will describe the work carried out to produce patterned arrays of aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using a dc plasma technique and a Ni catalyst. We will discuss how the density of the carbon nanotube/fibres can be varied by reducing the deposition yield through nickel interaction with a diffusion layer or by direct lithographic patterning of the Ni catalyst to precisely define the position of each nanotube/fibre. Details of the field emission behaviour of the different arrays of MWCNTS will also be presented.

Abstract:Recently cold cathodes based on field emission have drawn attention and been considered to drive accelerators and free electron lasers, due to the progress in field emitter arrays and planar emitters like diamond films. In this paper, we reviewed the characteristics of field emission in rf fields. Simulations of S-band rf guns consisting of a cathode cell and a full cell were done. We showed that a shorter cathode cell with a length of 0.25-0.3 of lambda/2 is in favor of obtaining both low emittance and low energy spread bunches when the amplitude of electric field on the cathode surface ranges from 60 to 80 MV/m. A single cell test cavity has been installed to study field emission of diamond films and the measured beam current showed a good agreement with theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Field emission (FE) devices are advanced lighting devices that have a 2-D planar configuration, different from the 0-D (dot) and 1-D (line) configurations of light-emitting diode (LED) and fluorescent lighting, respectively. The purpose of this study is to develop a FE lighting device with a lateral-cathode triode. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used as emitters and ZnS particles are used as a green phosphor. The materials were screen-printed onto two soda lime glass substrates. To increase the device lifetime and performance, we applied pulsewidth modulation (PWM) to the gate electrode. A high luminance of 12 690 cd/m2 and a good luminance uniformity of 84% were achieved for a lighting device with a lateral-cathode structure.

In particular, carbon nanotubes exhibit extraordinary field emission properties because of their high electrical conductivity, their high aspect ratio "whisker-like'' shape for optimum geometrical field enhancement, and remarkable thermal stability. This paper will review the PECVD growth process, and the microfabrication techniques needed to produce well defined carbon nanotube based micro-electron sources for use in novel parallel e-beam lithography and high frequency microwave amplifier systems.

Abstract:Electron sources are of great importance for the operation of the microwave devices. High-density field emitter arrays (FEA) can be used as electron sources for microwave devices with frequencies extending into the THz. In this work, we report on the successful application of electron beam lithography for fabricating the high-density gate aperture arrays for Mo-FEAs. We demonstrate gate aperture arrays with sub-micron pitch and density up to 10(8) tips / cm(2). The results can provide useful information for the application of field emitter arrays to special microwave devices.

Abstract:In this paper, a new compact retarding field energy analyzer (RFEA) is designed for diagnosing electron beams of a K-band space travelling-wave tube (TWT). This analyzer has an aperture plate to sample electron beams and a cylindrical electrode to overcome the defocusing effects. The front end of the analyzer constructed as a multistage depression collector (MDC) structure is intended to shape the field to prevent electrons from being accelerated to escape. The direct-current (DC) beams of the K-band space TWTs with the removing MDC can be investigated on the beam measurement system. The current density distribution of DC beams is determined by the analyzer, while the anode voltage and helix voltage of the TWTs are 7000V and 6850V, respectively. The current curve’s slope effect due to the reflection of secondary electrons on the copper collector of the analyzer is discussed. The experimental analysis shows this RFEA has a good energy resolution to satisfy the requirement of beam measurement.

Abstract:In this work, an electron gun with carbon nanotube (CNT) field emission cathode is demonstrated for traveling wave tube (TWT) application with laminar flow beam features. A maximum emission current of 9.76 mA at a bias of −11 kV is achieved by such electron gun, with current density up to 1.24 A cm−2. The output current of the electron gun can reach 8.08 mA, with the grid interception rate less than 22%. Furthermore, a Quasi-TWT with a beam tunnel of 1.6 mm is realized, which has a maximum collector current of 7.52 mA with the corresponding transmittance of 93.07%. The simulation of the beam-wave interaction implies further that our CNT field electron gun is able to meet the demands of TWT applications.

Abstract:In this article, fabrication and characterization data for a focusing Mo field emission array (FEA) are presented. This FEA is made by a technique of self-aligned photolithography. The final structure is referred to as a double-gate field emission array, with the gates acting as extraction and focusing electrodes. With this technique of self-aligned photolithography, the extraction gate aperture and the focusing gate aperture are both kept absolutely coaxial with their corresponding tips, and the ratio between diameters of the extraction aperture and the focusing aperture is kept controllable. A scanning electron microscope image of the completed microstructure shows the diameter of the extraction aperture to be as small as 1.2 μm, and the ratio of the focusing aperture diameter to that of the extraction aperture to be approximately 2:1.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of electron gun and focusing system for the W-Band Folded Waveguide Traveling wave Tube (FWTWT) using two available commercial software such as EGUN and TRAK. Pierce type electron gun with isolated beam forming electrode(BFE) and thermionic M-type dispenser cathode with 1.6mm button diameter has been opted for W-Band folded waveguide TWT under development at CSIR-CEERI. Solenoid magnet focusing has beendesigned to achieve electron beam focusing with controlledscalloping and ripples well within 8% and the beam waist radius less than 0.13mm.

Abstract:The design and testing of an electron gun for a 263 GHz sheet beam traveling wave tube is described. An elliptical cathode emits a 0.1518 A electron beam with 40 A/cm 2 loading. The emitted beam is compressed to a high current density (460 A/cm 2 ) beam with a highly elongated elliptical cross section of 0.60 × 0.07 mm by a special shaped electrode and an extruded anode. The test data show that the electron gun can provide sufficient current for the device, and the high beam transmission promises a successful device performance.

Abstract:The electron optical system (EOS) plays a vital role in vacuum electronic devices (VEDs). A 19.3-mA, 19.4-kV electron gun with a multistage focus electrode is designed, and the multistage focus electrode advantage is analyzed to generate a high-quality beam that meets the requirement of traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) operating higher than 0.6 THz. The tunnel and beam waist radii are 50 and , respectively, and the current density in the waist reaches as high as 501 A/cm2. A novel dynamic-matched focusing magnetic field upswing from 0.35 to 0.5 T at the circuit tail, produced by an open-side asymmetrical magnetic focusing system, is proposed to balance the increasing divergence force of the rise of space charge focus. Two different asymmetrical magnet design methods are analyzed. Compared to the uniform magnet (UM) and inclined magnet (IM), the inclined dynamic-matched magnet (IDMM) performs optimally in beam transmission and output power, verified by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The proposed dynamic-matched focusing magnetic field can benefit the performance of terahertz TWTs by improving the beam transmission rate and beam–wave interaction efficiency.

Abstract:An analytic model for the thin-film field-emission triode has been developed which allows fast and accurate calculation of the electric field distribution on the surface of the thin-film cathode for a wide range of device dimensions and operating voltages. The model can also be used to calculate the potential distribution throughout the device. The model is used together with the Fowler–Nordheim equation and with the published field-emission data on a carbon nanotube film to calculate the profiles of emission current along the surface of the thin-film cathode for a number of geometries. Non-uniform emission is shown to be a problem, which will result in undesirably large gate currents. Increasing the anode voltage to bias the cathode to just below its emission threshold even when the gate is off is shown to be an effective means of providing uniform emission when the gate is turned on while preserving a sufficiently high on/off ratio of emitted current.
