Abstract:Femtosecond laser micromachining has been a promising technique for fabricating three-dimensional (3D) micro/nano-structures in various kinds of dielectric materials with unprecedented spatial resolutions as well as flexibility in terms of the geometry and the materials can be processed. This unique capability opens opportunities for fabrication of 3D high-quality (Q) microresonators, which are one of the key elements in modern photonic applications. Here, we review the recent progress in fabrication of high-Q microresonators on glass and crystalline substrates by employing femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate the applications of the fabricated microresonators in generating low-threshold lasers, high-sensitivity chemical sensing and nonlinear optical wavelength conversion.

Abstract:Metal workpiece was processed by nanosecond pulsed laser electrochemical micro-etching with masks patterns in the shape of letter "E". In the experimental system established, the effect of different laser energy on processing quality was studied in air. In the different concentrations of the electrolyte, through optimized composite machining parameters, machining results of different laser energy with the masks were analyzed and compared in Aluminum alloy and Stainless steel. There was a large of difference in machining morphology by laser electrochemical micromachining with masks in two different metal materials. The results show that laser electrochemical micro-etching with masks has high efficiency and the prospects for the large-scale production, but the etching precision should be also further improved. Moreover, the nanosecond pulsed laser thermal-stress etching, electrochemical etching and the two combined coupling etching are the main factors to achieve the metal removal.

Abstract:The machining of micro/nano periodic surface structures using a femtosecond laser has been an academic frontier and hotspot in recent years. With an ultrahigh laser fluence and an ultrashort pulse duration, femtosecond laser machining shows unique advantages in material processing. It can process almost any material and can greatly improve the processing accuracy with a minimum machining size and heat-affected zone. Meanwhile, it can fabricate a variety of micro/nano periodic surface structures and then change a material's surface performance dramatically, such as the material's wetting performance, corrosive properties, friction properties, and optical properties, demonstrating great application potential in defense, medical, high-end manufacturing, and many other fields. In recent years, the research is gradually deepening from the basic theory to optimization design, intelligent control, and application technology. Nowadays, while focusing on metal structure materials, especially on stainless steel, research institutions in the field of micro and nano manufacturing have conducted systematic and in-depth experimental research using different experimental environments and laser-processing parameters. They have prepared various surface structures with different morphologies and periods with sound performance, and are one step closer to many civilian engineering applications. This paper reviews the study of micro/nano periodic surface structures and the performance of stainless steel machined using a femtosecond laser, obtains the general evolution law of surface structure and performance with the femtosecond laser parameters, points out several key technical challenges for future study, and provides a useful reference for the engineering research and application of femtosecond laser micro/nano processing technology.

Abstract:In recent years, the number of research work on the surface modification of metal glass by laser processing has been increasing, indicating that the interaction between laser and metal glass surface is interesting. Short pulse laser and ultrashort pulse laser processing are the most prominent in this field because of their narrow pulse width, high energy density and short action time with materials. In particular, femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers provide great possibilities for high quality, high efficiency and low loss processing of metal glass. This review summarizes this specific research field, introduces the properties and applications of metallic glass, the processing characteristics of femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers, and explains the complex process between laser and metallic glass from a microscopic perspective. In addition, this paper also analyzes the micro-nano structure and macroscopic morphology, and discusses the influence of microscopic mechanism on the structure. On the other hand, the properties of micro-nano structure are also discussed, including mechanical properties, optical properties, wettability and biocompatibility, which is of great significance to the surface functionalization of metallic glass.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser micromachining provides high precision and less thermal diffusion in surface structuring as a result of the ultrashort temporal duration and ultrahigh peak intensity of the femtosecond laser pulses. To increase the throughput of surface patterning, the focal spot size can be expanded with loose focusing, which, however, could lead to nonlinear self-focusing of the pulses when the pulses propagate in air. We solve the problem by use of spatiotemporally focused femtosecond laser pulses for ablation of metal surfaces, which gives rise to improved surface quality as compared with that obtained with the conventional focusing scheme.

Abstract:With the advancement of micro/nanotechnology, precise control of the interaction between light and matter at the micro/nanoscale is crucial for successful material processing and surface functionalization. Ultrafast lasers with ultra-short pulses have gained attention due to their high spatial resolution and low thermal damage, enabling extremely smooth and precise machining on various metal surfaces. At the same time, shorter pulse nanosecond lasers, which have a wider application range, strike a balance between achieving high-precision microfabrication and mitigating adverse thermal effects caused by millisecond lasers. By adjusting laser processing parameters, it is possible to create large-scale micro/nanostructures with complex shapes, delicate textures, and special functionalities, applicable in fields such as optics, electronics, and biomedicine. Short/ultrafast pulse laser fabrication technology opens up more possibilities and prospects for the realization of diverse functional micro/nanostructures. This comprehensive review provides an overview of the interaction mechanisms between short/ultra-short-pulse laser micro/nanoprocessing and materials. By integrating theoretical models such as the two-temperature model and the Drude–Lorentz model, along with comprehensive numerical simulation methods, a brief summary of the ablation behavior of metal surfaces under short/ultra-short-pulse lasers is provided. Furthermore, we delve into the controllability of microstructures, laser-induced periodic surface structures at the nanoscale, and other types of nanostructures under different processing conditions. Thorough analysis and discussion are conducted from multiple perspectives, including surface topography and functional impacts. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the functionalization of metal surfaces with micro/nanostructures, and an in-depth investigation and review are conducted in areas such as surface wettability, bio-inspired surfaces, optical diffraction, and advanced biomedicine. Finally, the advantages and limitations of laser texturing processing techniques are discussed, and the future development of functionalized metal surfaces is anticipated.

Abstract:The method of high-energy short pulse laser etching underwater based on thermal - mechanical effect was put forward. In the experiment system with mask and salt solution , heat affected zone was visible decrease and the image of mask was micro-copied at the workpiece surface. Owing to the photochemical reaction and thermal-mechanical coupling effect, uniform line width of 120μm can be obtained.

Abstract:As a laser technology, the femtosecond laser is used in biomedical fields due to its excellent performance—its ultrashort pulses, high instantaneous power, and high precision. As a surface treatment process, the femtosecond laser can prepare different shapes on metal surfaces to enhance the material's properties, such as its wear resistance, wetting, biocompatibility, etc. Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) are a common phenomenon that can be observed on almost any material after irradiation by a linearly polarized laser. In this paper, the current research state of LIPSSs in the field of biomedicine is reviewed. The influence of laser parameters (such as laser energy, pulse number, polarization state, and pulse duration) on the generation of LIPSSs is discussed. In this paper, the applications of LIPSSs by femtosecond laser modification for various purposes, such as in functional surfaces, the control of surface wettability, the surface colonization of cells, and the improvement of tribological properties of surfaces, are reviewed.

Abstract:Due to their excellent light transmission, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength, and other characteristics, transparent materials have been widely used in emerging industries such as aviation, aerospace, microelectronics, interconnected communication, etc. Compared with the traditional mechanical processing and chemical processing of transparent materials, laser processing, with such characteristics as a high peak power, high energy density, and non-contact processing, has a lot of obvious advantages in processing efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, some of the recent research advancements concerning the laser processing of transparent materials are introduced in detail. Firstly, the basic mechanism of the interaction between the laser and material is briefly summarized on the time scale. The differences in principle between nanosecond, picosecond, and femtosecond pulse laser processing are analyzed. Then, the main technical means of the nanosecond laser processing of transparent materials are summarized. Next, the main application directions of the ultrafast laser processing of transparent materials are discussed, including the preparation of optical waveguide devices, periodic structure devices, micropores, and microchannels. Finally, this paper summarizes the prospects for the future development of laser processing transparent materials.

Abstract:Compared to traditional processing methods and other advanced micro/nano processing methods, femtosecond laser direct writing technology has certain advantages in controllable micro/nano processing, such as no mask, suitable for any material, and small thermal effect. Therefore, it is always used to prepare bionic micro/nano structure surfaces for applications in various fields such as self-cleaning, oil-water separation, and water mist collection. The formation mechanism and design ideas of preparing various micro/nano structures on different materials by femtosecond lasers arc analyzed, and the latest research progress on the preparation of the bionic micro/nano structure surfaces by femtosecond laser is summarized. Then, the related concepts and theoretical models of surface wettability, controllable preparation of various micro/nano structures by femtosecond laser, and related industrial applications arc explored. Finally, the difficulties and challenges of femtosecond laser processing technology in the field of micro/nano manufacturing arc analyzed, and its future development in related fields is prospected.

Abstract:The ultrafast-laser-matter interactions enable "top-down" laser surface structuring, especially for materials difficult to process, with "bottom-up" self-organizing features. The subwavelength scenarios of laser-induced structuring are improved in defects and long-range order by applying positive/negative feedbacks. It is still hardly reported for supra-wavelength laser structuring more associated with complicated thermo/hydro-dynamics. For the first time to the knowledge, the near-field-regulated ultrafast-laser lithography of self-arrayed supra-wavelength micro/nano-pores directly on ultra-hard metallic glass is developed here. The plasmonic hot spots on pre-structures, as the positive feedback, clamped the lateral geometries (i.e., position, size). Simultaneously, it drilled and self-organized into micro/nano-pore arrays by photo-dynamic plasma ablation and Marangoni removal confined under specific femtosecond-laser irradiation, as the negative feedback. The mechanisms and finite element modeling of the multi-physical transduction (based on the two-temperature model), the far-field/near-field coupling, and the polarization dependence during laser-matter interactions are studied. Large-area micro/nano-pore arrays (centimeter scale or larger) are manufactured with tunable periods (1-5 µm) and geometries (e.g., diameters of 500 nm-6 µm using 343, 515, and 1030 lasers, respectively). Consequently, the mid/far-infrared reflectivity at 2.5-6.5 µm iss decreased from ≈80% to ≈5%. The universality of multi-physical coupling and near-field enhancements makes this approach widely applicable, or even irreplaceable, in various applications.

The self‐arrayed micro/nano‐pores have adjustable period (1–5 μm) and geometry (e.g., 500 nm‐6 μm in diameter). They decrease the surface infrared reflectance at 2.5–6.5 μm from ≈80% to ≈5%. The universality of multi‐physical coupling and near‐field enhancements makes this approach widely applicable, or even irreplaceable, in various applications.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing of metals by employing continuous wave and short pulse lasers completely changes the way of modern industrial production. But the ultrafast laser has the superiority to short pulse laser and continuous wave laser in additive manufacturing. It has higher peak power, small thermal effect, high machining accuracy and low damage threshold. It can effectively perform additive manufacturing for special materials and improve the mechanical properties of parts. This article reviews the mechanism of the interaction between ultrafast laser and metal materials to rule the manufacturing processes. The current application of ultrafast laser on forming and manufacturing special materials, including refractory metals, transparent materials, composite materials and high thermal conductivity materials are also discussed. Among the review, the shortcomings and challenges of the current experimental methods are discussed as well. Finally, suggestions are provided for the industrial application of ultrashort pulse laser in the field of additive manufacturing in the future.

Abstract:Laser photothermal-conversion membranes have great potential applications in many different fields, including laser ignition. However, the demand for real-time, high heat output calls for an extra heat-releasing pattern other than the traditional luminous energy–thermal, energy-conversion mechanism. Herein, it was found that fluorinated graphene (FG) was a promising candidate for laser photothermal conversion due to the extra chemical energy–thermal, energy-conversion process, which originated from a self-redox reaction under laser irradiation. Moreover, an easy sonochemical, exfoliation–filtration protocol was provided for the preparation of the fluorinated, graphene-based, free-standing membranes. In brief, FG flakes were arranged into flower-like patterns and formed freestanding, carpet-like membranes with layered structures with the filtration of FG suspension, which was obtained from exfoliating fluorographite in N-methylpyrrolidone. Furthermore, this contribution also revealed that modifying the FG membranes with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was helpful for improving the photothermal-conversion properties. With the construction of the FG/PTFE composited structure, higher heat output could be achieved when a laser pulse is applied to the composite membranes. This work revealed the great potential of fluorinated graphene in laser photothermal conversion, and provided an alternative route of introducing a chemical energy–thermal, energy-conversion process for achieving high heat output under laser irradiation.

Abstract:A new technique about high-strain-rate fast and fine forming of metal sheet is presented in this article and the mechanism of laser shock forming is investigated elementarily from the theory. The studies indicate that when the high energy density laser impacts on the energy absorbing layer, which is coated on the surface of metal, the surface layer absorbs laser energy and forms high temperature and density plasma layer. During the duration of the pulsed laser radiation, the plasma layer expands acutely under the constraining layer, its density increases and the temperature elevates. In the end the plasma layer ejects and explodes and then as a result, the high-breadth shocking wave forms. The metal sheet obtains forming impulse in the ejection and explosion of plasma and subsequently, the said energy scatters in the form of plastic work. Using laser shock forming, metal sheet forming is realized without mould and the dimensions of the obtained shape are determined by the boundary condition. This technique can achieve fine forming at or beyond micrometer-level.

Abstract:Microholes have crucial applications in aerospace, the automotive industry, and other industries. In this study, the microhole processing technology based on the femtosecond-laser spiral trepanning method was investigated. By adjusting the spiral scanning path, laser power distribution, and defocusing amount to control laser energy distribution, an inverted cone hole, straight hole, and normal cone hole were obtained finally. The morphology and element of the microhole were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The experimental results of the femtosecond-laser spiral trepanning method could achieve fewer impurities. Finally, the formation mechanisms of different microholes are explained in detail. The method is simpler and more efficient than the traditional microhole processing technology. The femtosecond-laser spiral trepanning method with controllable hole roundness, accuracy, and taper has important practical significance in microhole processing.
