Abstract:Hypothesis: Controlling the wetting behaviour of gallium-based liquid metal is highly desired for soft electronics applications. Currently, achieving durable and patternable liquid-metal-repellent surfaces by a simple and flexible method is challenging. The femtosecond laser has a remarkable ability to modify the morphology and wettability of a solid surface. It can also potentially be applied to control the wettability of liquid metal and achieve complete liquid-metal patterns. Experiments: Femtosecond laser processing was used to form a microstructure on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface. With regard to the laser-ablated surface, its morphology was observed by a scanning electron microscope, and its wettability to liquid metal was characterized by measuring the contact angle, sliding angle, and adhesive force. Finally, its potential applications in soft electronics were demon-strated. Findings: A layer of micro/nanostructures was directly prepared on the PDMS surface by laser ablation, presenting excellent liquid-metal repellence. Without expensive masks and complex operation processes, programmable liquid-metal-repellent patterns were easily obtained by femtosecond laser selectively treating the PDMS surface, enabling EGaIn to be patterned on the textured surface. The as-prepared liquid-metal patterns can be used as a flexible microheater and a microstrip patch antenna. It is believed that laser-patterned liquid-metal-repellent surfaces will have significant applications in soft electronics, such as antennas, microcircuits, lab on chips, and wearable electronic devices. Liquid Metal-Based Reconfigurable and Repairable Electronics Designed by a Femtosecond Laser

Abstract:Patterning liquid metal (LM) on a solid surface is highly required for flexible electronics. However, a simple way to prepare repairable and reconfigurable LM patterns remains a challenge. In this article, we pattern porous network microstructures on a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) surface and selectively realize "super-metal-phobicity" by femtosecond (fs) laser microfabrication. The untreated area shows ultrahigh adhesion to LM, while the laser-ablated area presents ultralow adhesion. After being brushed over the whole surface, LM can be selectively wetted, forming repairable circuits. Besides, by controlling the width of the microstructured groove, a reconfigurable patch antenna is also designed and achieved. It is anticipated that the fs laser-induced super-metal-phobic surfaces will have potential applications in wearable devices, frequency-modulated antennas, and reconfigurable electronics.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that the wettability of liquid metal (LM) on a substrate is very different from the water wettability. Superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic silicon and polydimethylsiloxane surfaces, respectively, are obtained by femtosecond laser processing and proper chemical modification. All of the structured surfaces have excellent LM repellence, that is, supermetalphobicity, in spite of superhydrophobicity or superhydrophilicity. The experimental comparison and contact model analysis reveal that surface microstructure actually plays a crucial role in endowing a surface with supermetalphobicity while surface chemistry has a little influence on the formation of supermetalphobicity, because the liquid/solid contact is replaced by a solid/solid contact mode for a LM droplet on a textured substrate. It is believed that the established principle for creating supermetalphobic surfaces will enable to accelerate the application progress of LM materials in flexible circuits and liquid robots.

Abstract:Liquid metal-based electronic devices are attracting increasing attention owing to their excellent flexibility and high conductivity. However, a simple way to realize liquid metal electronics on a microscale without photolithography is still challenging. Herein, the wettability and adhesion of liquid metal are controlled by combining the stirring method, femtosecond laser microfabrication, and sacrificial layer assistant. The adhesive force of liquid metal is dramatically enhanced by adjusting its oxidation. The wetting area is limited to a micro-pattern by a femtosecond laser and sacrificial layer. On this basis, a high-resolution liquid metal printing method is proposed. The printing resolution can be controlled even less than 50 μm. The resultant liquid metal pattern is applied to electronic skin, which shows uniformity, flexibility, and stability. It is anticipated that this liquid metal printing method will hold great promise in the fields of flexible electronics.

Abstract:Synthetic superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted considerable attention because they reduce effects such as friction, erosion, and contamination of devices. In this paper, a simple method for fabricating superhydrophobic metallic surfaces with femtosecond laser pulses is presented. The laser irradiation creates a surface morphology that exhibits structures on the micro- and nanoscales. By varying the laser fluence, focus position and scanning mode, we can tune the feature sizes and morphologies of microstructures and nanostructures. The wetting properties of surface change with the micro/nano structure are characterized. The contact angles for water on polished surface and surface with micro- and nano-structures are measured and compared. It is found that the contact angles for water on the micro- and nano-structured surfaces is higher about 40° than that on the polished surface. The results indicate that laser ablation is effective surface texturing method and the composite structures with micro- and nanoscales improve the hydrophobic property of metals effectively.

Abstract:The invention discloses a method for preparing a metal surface superhydrophobic microstructure by femto-second laser. The method comprises that: a radiation field of the femto-second laser is used to prepare a superhydrophobic periodic micrometer/nanometer structure on the surface of a metal target; when the metal surface periodic micrometer/nanometer structure is prepared, the metal target is fixed on a two-dimensional precise displacement platform first, a beam of the femto-second laser is focused by an object lens or lens and made to act on the metal target; and by the femto-second laser induced combination with the movement of the two-dimensional precise displacement platform, the micrometer/nanometer periodic microstructure is prepared. The method has the advantages of high preparation efficiency, wide arrange of application and strong operability of the device, and the periodic metal nanometer structure obtained by treatment is orderly and evenly arrayed, and the micrometer/nanometer periodic structures in different sizes and patterns can be prepared.

Abstract:Optical functional surfaces are key components of nearly every optical device and they have become a special focus in both academia and industry. The no contact, one step, direct, and maskless laser surface texturing technique is one of the most encouraging approaches for realizing the surface functions. We use a high power and high repetition rate ultrafast laser system to produce micro-nano structures on metal surfaces. We demonstrate that metal surface micro-nano structures and correspondingly their optical responses can be facilely tailored by simple controlling the ultrafast laser processing parameters. Nano particles of tens to hundreds nm, sub-micro particles of 0.5-1 mu m, fine-micro particles of 1-10 mu m, micro particles of 10-50 mu m, and coarse-micro particles larger than 50 mu m have been fabricated on Cu surfaces. And surface reflection of copper surfaces has been tuned from 10% to 90% in spectra level and from UV to MIR in spectrum range, with unique optical properties like visible selective reflection, linear changing reflection, band reflection, and broadband absorption being achieved. Abstract:Artificial liquid-repellent surfaces have attracted substantial scientific and industrial attention with a focus on creating functional topological features; however, the role of the underlying structures has been overlooked. Recent developments in micro-nanofabrication allow us now to construct a skin-muscle type system combining interfacial liquid repellence atop a mechanically functional structure. Specifically, we design surfaces comprising bioinspired, mushroom-like repelling heads and spring-like flexible supports, which are realized by three-dimensional direct laser lithography. The flexible supports elevate liquid repellency by resisting droplet impalement and reducing contact time. This, previously unknown, use of spring-like flexible supports to enhance liquid repellency provides an excellent level of control over droplet manipulation. Moreover, this extends repellent microstructure research from statics to dynamics and is envisioned to yield functionalities and possibilities by linking functional surfaces and mechanical metamaterials.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser micromachining provides high precision and less thermal diffusion in surface structuring as a result of the ultrashort temporal duration and ultrahigh peak intensity of the femtosecond laser pulses. To increase the throughput of surface patterning, the focal spot size can be expanded with loose focusing, which, however, could lead to nonlinear self-focusing of the pulses when the pulses propagate in air. We solve the problem by use of spatiotemporally focused femtosecond laser pulses for ablation of metal surfaces, which gives rise to improved surface quality as compared with that obtained with the conventional focusing scheme.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable water adhesion have attracted much interest in fundamental research and practical applications. In this paper, we used a simple method to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable water adhesion. Periodic microstructures with different topographies were fabricated on copper surface via femtosecond (fs) laser irradiation. The topography of these microstructures can be controlled by simply changing the scanning speed of the laser beam. After surface chemical modification, these as-prepared surfaces showed superhydrophobicity combined with different adhesion to water. Surfaces with deep microstructures showed self-cleaning property with extremely low water adhesion, and the water adhesion increased when the surface microstructures became flat. The changes in surface water adhesion are attributed to the transition from Cassie state to Wenzel state. We also demonstrated that these superhydrophobic surfaces with different adhesion can be used for transferring small water droplets without any loss. We demonstrate that our approach provides a novel but simple way to tune the surface adhesion of superhydrophobic metallic surfaces for good potential applications in related areas.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser processing is emerged as a promising tool to functionalize surfaces of various materials, including metals, semiconductors, and polymers. However, the productivity of this technique is limited by the low efficiency of laser raster scanning. Here we report a facile approach for efficiently producing large-area functional polymer surfaces, by which metal is firstly textured by a femtosecond laser, and the as-prepared hierarchical structures are subsequently transferred onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces. Aluminum pieces covered by laser induced micro/nano-structures act as template masters and their performance of displaying diverse colors are investigated. Polymer replicas are endowed with tunable wetting properties, which are mainly attributed to the multi-scale surface structures. Furthermore, the surfaces are found to have extremely high adhesive force for water drops because of the high water penetration depth and the resultant high contact angle hysteresis. This characteristic facilitates many potential applications like loss-free tiny water droplets transportation. The reusability of metal master and easiness of soft lithography make it to be a very simple, fast and cost-efficient way for mass production of functional polymeric surfaces.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser irradiation is one of the most promising treatments to fabricate liquid repellent surfaces, attracting substantial scientific and industrial attention. So far, the focus has been on hierarchical interfacial structures at micro- and nanoscales, however, this has yet to be used in combination with macro-sized features. We present a strategy of femtosecond laser irradiation to create macro-micro-nano hierarchical surfaces for liquid droplet manipulation. These three-level hierarchical surfaces are shown to successfully split and gyrate impacting droplets. Our work is believed to be the first demonstration of femtosecond-laser-structured macro-micro-nano hierarchical surfaces to artificially design droplet impact, paving the way for aircraft anti-icing and energy harvesting.

Abstract:Compared to traditional processing methods and other advanced micro/nano processing methods, femtosecond laser direct writing technology has certain advantages in controllable micro/nano processing, such as no mask, suitable for any material, and small thermal effect. Therefore, it is always used to prepare bionic micro/nano structure surfaces for applications in various fields such as self-cleaning, oil-water separation, and water mist collection. The formation mechanism and design ideas of preparing various micro/nano structures on different materials by femtosecond lasers arc analyzed, and the latest research progress on the preparation of the bionic micro/nano structure surfaces by femtosecond laser is summarized. Then, the related concepts and theoretical models of surface wettability, controllable preparation of various micro/nano structures by femtosecond laser, and related industrial applications arc explored. Finally, the difficulties and challenges of femtosecond laser processing technology in the field of micro/nano manufacturing arc analyzed, and its future development in related fields is prospected.

Abstract:The superamphiphobic surface has attracted wide attention because of its excellent liquid-repellent property. Low sliding angle and mechanical stability are the key requirements for superamphiphobic surface to realize its potential application in industry and life. Here, the superamphiphobic surface with hierarchical micro-nano rough structures has been prepared on metal substrate by laser etching and spraying methods. The surface can repel both water and low surface tension liquids (eg. ethylene glycol, rapeseed oil, cyclohexane). The superamphiphobic surface with excellent liquid-repellent property has certain anti-fouling and drag reduction function. The prepared surface has good robustness. It shows good liquid-repellent property even if it suffers physical damage or acid/base attacks. We envision that the superamphiphobic surface will be used in a wide range of applications such as anti-fouling and liquid transportation.
Liquid Metal-Based Microfluidic Metasurface for Controllable Electromagnetic Wave Reflection Attenuation

Abstract:We demonstrated a liquid metal based microfluidic chip that enabled consistent, continuous and large liquid metal unit structure array reconfiguration. The chips were assembled into a metasurface, which preliminary achieved controllable electromagnetic wave reflection attenuation. The chip contained a Galinstan split-ring resonator (SRR) array, and the SRRs could be reconfigured continuously by NaOH solution pressure driven. A fin shaped microvalve was designed and integrated onto the chip, which could withstand a high fluid driving pressure (over 210 kPa), so the SRRs could be reconfigured with a large split angle. The flow resistance of each SRR chamber was analyzed for consistent and robust SRRs deformation. The SRRs enabled more than 250° reconfiguration and showed consistent deformation with a standard derivation less than 8.5°. The metasurface showed 7.5 dB and 13.5 dB attenuation at 3 GHz and 4 GHz respectively. Also, with the different split angles, there could be three attenuation peaks that reach −10 dB when the frequency ranged from 2.9–3.1 GHz, 3.7–4.2 GHz and 4.8–5.0 GHz, respectively. The metasurface we proposed can be potentially used in multiband controllable electromagnetic wave absorption.
Progress on Ultrafast Laser Fabricating Metal Surface Micro-Nano Antireflection Structures

Abstract:Surface antireflection properties are of great value in many fields including solar utilization, optoelectronic products, infrared sensing/imaging, stealth, aerospace technologies, etc. Here, the applications, the artificial realization routines of surface antireflection properties were summarized, as well as the state of the art in the surface antireflection structures. Currently, scientists have achieved ultra-broad-band antireflection performances through carbon nanotube coatings and silicon nanotip array structures. However, there is still much room for the improvement of the antireflection properties of metal surface micro/nano structures. Based on the next generation high power high repetition rate ultrafast laser system, the Laser Materials Processing Research Grouop in Tsinghua University has successfully fabricated diverse metal surface micro-nano structures and conducted systematic research on their antireflection properties. The average reflectance of metal surfaces in the UV-VIS, UV-NIR, UV-MIR, and UV-FIR regions are reduced down to around 2%, 6%, 5%, and 8%, respectively, exhibiting ultra-broad-band highly effective antireflection properties. Besides, these antireflection performances show little change within the incident angle range of 0-60o. Further, "macro-micronano-nanowire" hierarchical structures are also developed, reaching an ultralow total reflectance of 0.6% at the infrared wavelength around 16-17 μm and keeping steadily below 3% over a broad band of 14-18 μm. The outstanding ultra-broad-band spectrum antireflection properties are anticipated to have good prospects in various applications in future.

Abstract:Due to their low-cost, comparable transparency and ease of preparation, polymers are widely used to fabricate various micro- and nano-structures for their applications in micro-optics, micro-fluidics, biomedical systems and so on. And in recent years, femtosecond (fs) laser direct writing process has become a popular tool to fabricate arbitrary three-dimensional (3D) microstructures with nanometer accuracies. Here we present fabricating polymer micro- and nano-structures via femtosecond laser. The tunable adhesive superhydrophobic surfaces achieved by femtosecond laser microprocessing may be potentially used in microfluidic systems to modulate the mobility of liquid droplets.

Abstract:Antireflection performance and fabrication efficiency are key factors that affect the practical application of antireflective structures. Nowadays, how to combine good antireflection performance with highly efficient processing is still a difficult problem. In this work, a novel and scalable method of fabrication of antireflective LIPSS (laser induced periodic surface structure) on ZnS surface by spatial shaping femtosecond laser is proposed. A Gaussian beam is converted to a line beam by a cylindrical lens transformation. The focal long axis of line beam is on the scale of centimeters, and the minor axis is on the scale of micrometers. Hence, the fabrication efficiency can be significantly improved by adjusting the scanning direction perpendicular to the major axis. Notably, the proposed highly efficient method only takes 21 s to complete the fabrication of 1 × 1 cm 2 antireflective ZnS surface with excellent antireflective property. At the laser power of 500 mW, scan speed of 1.0 mm/s, scan interval of 0.55 cm, the transmittance of fabricated antireflective structures maintains 78–87.5% at 2.5–10 μm, with the average transmittance of 81.3%, 5.9% higher than that of untreated ZnS. This proposed method may open a revolutionary concept for the rapid antireflective surface laser processing, which has a great application potential in energy, military, aerospace and other fields.
