Abstract:In the case of 0.6MeV/C carbon clusters Cn+(n=1—5) implantationinto NaCl crystal， a cluster zone about 321nm calculated by TRIM program was observed. The optical absorption indicated that the defect concentration of NaCl caused by carbon cluster implantatoin varied with the size of cluster. The bigger cluster induced V2 and V3 color centers and higher defect concentration.

Abstract:The quasiparticle band structures of monolayer alpha-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I) and beta-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I) are researched by using an exact quasiparticle approximation GW theory. Our results show that both monolayer alpha-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I) and beta-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I) are two-dimensional semiconductors with wide band gaps (larger than 3.5 eV). We have considered the effect of exciton, calculated their optical properties by GW(0)+BSE method, and obtained the accurate dielectric function spectrum. We find that monolayer alpha-ZrNI has excellent light absorption in the ultraviolet region. By studying the exciton binding energy of monolayer a-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I), it is found that monolayer alpha-ZrNCl and alpha-ZrNBr have relatively large exciton binding energies (0.74 eV, 0.67 eV). The relationship between the band gaps and the exciton binding energies in two-dimensional semiconductors has also been discussed. Our present work gives more accurate information on the energy band structures and optical properties of monolayer ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I), which is of guiding significance for the future investigation on monolayer ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I). And the investigation of the exciton binding energy has a reference value for the study of the exciton effect in two-dimensional semiconductors.

Abstract:Polycarbonate films were irradiated by MeV ions, including carbon clusters Cn+ (n=1–5) with the same atomic dose and energy. The samples were measured by optical absorption and FTIT–ATR spectra, from which effective damage cross-section of carbon cluster ions could be calculated. This showed a nonlinear and selective effect of cluster ions.

Abstract:Irradiation of MeV Cn+ (n=1–5) cluster ions onto polycarbonate (PC) films was performed and the surface chemical structure was analyzed in detail by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The irradiation condition was 0.6MeV/atom and atomic dose of 5×1012ions/cm2. The results show that the ratio of C 1s to O 1s (C/O) of PC surface irradiated by C cluster with the same atomic energy and dose gradually decreased with increasing of cluster size then tended to a saturation. It indicates that the oxygen and carbon atoms contained in PC films were selectively sputtered by carbon cluster ions. As to the ratio of C/O of PC films irradiated by individual C decreased linearly with increasing of projectile energy. XPS results show that ion beams induce the change of chemical element ratio, restructure of near surface of PC and formation of new type of bond.

Abstract:In this paper are reported the results of a comparative study on the effects of implanted xenon ions at high energies (40 and 80 keV) with the dose of 5 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 on the electrical, morphological and near-infrared optical properties of CuInSe 2 single crystals. This compound is used as the absorbing layer and is known for its resistance to radiation damages. The characterizing techniques that have been used were the four-points probe, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a high-resolution photoacoustic spectrometer (PAS) of the gas-microphone type. The latter was used to measure the acoustic spectral response close to the fundamental edge of CuInSe 2 , of which the absorption coefficient spectral dependence of the implanted layer has been extracted from that of the bulk substrate using a newly developed software that takes into account the optical and thermal reflections within and at the samples' interfaces. The experimental results have been correlated to those obtained by simulation using the SRIM software. Irradiation with xenon inflicted significant damage on the surface of CuInSe 2 crystals leading even to the formation of a complex crater structure. Nevertheless, it is found that the implanted samples' absorption coefficients have close to the absorption edge remained as high as those of the unimplanted ones. The whole process did not lead to amorphization. Chemical defects' states resulting from vacancies of selenium were the mostly affected.

Abstract:In our experiment, MeV C1+ ions and C2+ cluster ions were used to irradiate PC films. Through analyzing the absorption spectra of PC films, we have found that the ion implantation can result in the key break and flaw near the surface of the polymer. These changes alter the property of optical absorption of PC films and lead to obvious absorption in the range of visible light, which show that the absorption limit is closely related to the species, energy and fluence of the injecting ions. The XPS analysis of composition and structure of near surface of PC further verifies this conclusion.

Abstract:Ion implantation of laser induced graphite plasma has been performed for modifications in surface, optical, electrical and structural properties of CR-39. KrF Excimer laser (248 nm, 18 ns, 120 mJ), at an irradiance of 2.5 × 108 W cm-2 is utilized for the production of graphite plasma. The energy and fluence of graphite ions are estimated by Thomson parabola technique. The targets are implanted with energy of 710 KeV graphite ions for four fluences ranging from 26 × 1012 to 92 × 1015 ions/cm2, in presence of magnetic field of strength 90 mT. The digital optical analysis reveals well-arranged dendritic and island like structure formation on irradiated polymer surface. Confocal microscopic investigation illustrates the growth of nano/micro sized craters and hillocks for various ion fluences. Dissociation of bonds along with formation of new bonds is confirmed from Raman analysis. UV-Vis spectral analysis reveals that the optical transmittance values for visible regions of CR-39 are drastically reduced from 90 % to 68 % for maximum laser fluence of 92 × 1015 ions.cm-2. Significant improvement in electrical conductivity is achieved from 10-9 to 10-7 Scm-1 for lowest fluence value of graphite ions. SRIM software is utilized for the measurement of stopping power or Linear Energy Transfer (LTE) of 710 Kev graphite ions, is about, 55.53 eV/Ǻ, in the CR-39 targets.

Abstract:The induced impacts of high doses of gamma irradiation on the structural variations of poly-allyl-diglycol carbonate (PADC) polymers (CR-39) were studied in terms of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. CR-39 samples were irradiated separately at different ranging from 200 to 800 kGy; (step 200). A deconvolution process of the XRD spectra of CR-39 samples for all gamma irradiation doses was performed. The results of this deconvolution process for the pristine specimen show three diffraction peaks at about 20.30°, 28.16° and 41.70° of 2 θ . The broad peaks at 28.16 o and 41.70°, and the highest peak at 20.30° of XRD confirm the amorphous nature and low degrees of crystallinity, respectively. The position, area, intensity and full width at half maximum of these peaks are changed with further doses of gamma irradiation. With additional gamma irradiations, the intensities of all peaks decrease significantly. The highest and sharpest peak properties are employed to determine the crystallinity, crystallite size, and radiation chemical yield (G-value) for the loss of carbonate ester bonds using a proposed method. Higher doses of gamma irradiation result in a decrease in crystallinity while increasing crystallite size. Furthermore, the optical band gaps reduced from 4.81 to 3.49 eV when the irradiated dose increased from 0 to 800 kGy. Furthermore, the third order nonlinear susceptibility increased from 0.84x10 −12 esu to 2.25x10 −12 esu with increasing the radiation doses from 0 to 800 kGy. Moreover, the nonlinear refractive increased from 1.52x10 −11 to 3.69x10 −11 with increasing the radiation doses from 0 to 800 kGy. On the other hand, the number of carbon atoms in each cluster increased from 51 to 97 when the irradiated dose increased from 0 kGy to 800 kGy.

Abstract:Understanding the effects of heavy ion irradiation is significant for materials and devices applied in the field of nuclear radiation detection. In this paper, the relationship between heavy ions (20 MeV Cl) and electric performance in CdZnTe crystals has been investigated. A damage layer is introduced 6 μm below the CdZnTe crystal surface and dominated by donor defects according to the SRIM (stopping and range of ions in matter) calculation and Hall effect results. The current–voltage ( I – V ) is asymmetrical, which is attributed to the n + /n homojunction formed by the damage layer. The barrier height of the homojunction increases from 0.845 to 0.946 eV with radiation fluence. For low irradiation fluences, the I – V curves follow the Schottky emission model at a bias of 0–100 V because of barrier lowering due to the applied field and the image force. When the irradiation fluence is greater than 2.5 × 10 12 n cm −2 , the increasing leakage current after 40 V voltage conforms to the Poole–Frenkel (PF) effect caused by deep traps. The carrier mobility largely decreases from ∼1100 cm 2 V −1 s −1 to 267–658 cm 2 V −1 s −1 due to the scattering of ionized impurities. The energy resolving capability of γ-rays deteriorates from ∼8% to 15.3–26.8% by the trapping effect. The photopeak of the γ spectrum could not be recognized when the fluence reached 1.4 × 10 13 n cm −2 . This work provides important irradiation protection reference data for CdZnTe devices in various high-fluence application fields, such as industrial monitoring and nuclear spectroscopy.

Abstract:Nonlinear absorptive property of a novel metal cluster cis-Cp*2Mo2S4Cu2I2•(CH2Cl2)2 in CH2Cl2 solution is studied by using an open-aperture Z-scan technique with laser pulse of 8ns pulse-width at the wavelength of 532nm .The experimental results shows that the cluster has strong nonlinear absorption under the 8ns pulse excitation. A picosecond time resolved pump-probe experiments at 532nm has been used to study the nonlinear origin of the cluster. The pump-probe response of the metal cluster is similar to that of C60 solution, which implies that the nonlinear mechanisms are the same of the two materials. By establishing a five-level model for the cluster, several nonlinear optical parameters, such as the relaxation time of the excited singlet state, the absorption cross sections of the excited state of the cluster arc obtained. According to the results of the experiments and numerical simulations, a conclusion can be obtained that, at 532nm , the effective absorption of the triplet state of the cluster solution is the dominant mechanism causing the reverse saturable absorption. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data, which not only shows the availability of the kinetic model but also demonstrates the close relationship between the nonlinear absorptive property of the cluster and its dynamic processes.

Abstract:Irradiation effects of neutron and 3 MeV C+, Si+ in 6H–SiC were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution XRD. The total disorder values of neutron irradiated SiC agree well with that of samples irradiated by ions at the same doses respectively. On the other hand, high-resolution XRD results shows that the lattice strain rate caused by neutron irradiation is 6.8%/dpa, while it is only 2.6%/dpa and 4.2%/dpa for Si+ and C+ irradiations respectively. Our results illustrate that the total disorder in neutron irradiated SiC can be accurately simulated by MeV Si+ or C+ irradiations at the same dose, but for the lattice strain and strain-related properties like surface hardness, the depth profile of irradiation damages induced by energetic ions must be considered. This research will contribute to a better understanding of the difference in irradiation effects between neutron and heavy ions.

Abstract:Damage effects of CO2 cluster ion beam on Si substrate were studied by RBS and ellipsometry. It is found by experiments that for impact with big size cluster, the damage degree is slighter and the damage layer is shallower. The bigger the cluster size, the easier to form the lower damage oxide layer. With increase of dose, a thicker oxide layer from damage region is formed, at the same time a thinner and more abrupt transition appears between oxidized layer and the underlying crystalline Si.

Abstract:We have accelerated clusters of C-n(+) (n = 2-8), Al-n(+) (n = 2-4), Si-n(+) (n = 2-4) and Ge-n(+) (n = 2, 3) to MeV energies at the 1.7 MV tandem accelerator of Peking University. The defect concentrations produced by cluster irradiation were measured by channelling Rutherford backscattering (CRBS). We took notice of the fact that the defect concentration depends significantly on the dose rate at the same energy and dose. In order to compare the defect density produced by Si-n(+) irradiation, irradiation at the same dose rate for different cluster sizes was preferred. The non-linear effect of defect concentration produced by Si-n(+) irradiation in the near surface region has been measured. Defect self-annealing for Si-2 and enhanced defect production for Si-3 are observed. This behaviour is well described by Tombrello's model for defect production by heavy ions in metals.
Structural Features and Formation Kinetics of CnD-m Cluster Ions

Abstract:By laser ablating of anthracene-d(10) sample, various CnDm- and C-n(-) cluster anions were generated. The distribution suggests that the structural configuration and stability of the clusters varied with the number of deuterium atoms and the parity of number of carbons. With growing size of the clusters, their structural configuration changes from chain to monocycle, and further to polycycle. The analysis of the distribution also reveals the formation kinetics of the clusters.
A Computational Investigation of Boron-Doped Chromium and Chromium Clusters by Density Functional Theory

Abstract:The geometries, stabilities and electronic properties of Cr n and Cr n B (n=2–9) clusters have been systematically investigated by density functional theory. The results suggest that the lowest energy structures for Cr n B clusters can be obtained by substituting one Cr atom in Crn+1 clusters with B atom. The geometries of Cr n B clusters are similar to that of Crn+1 clusters except for local structural distortion. The second-order difference and fragmentation energy show Cr4, Cr6, Cr8, Cr3B, Cr5B and Cr8B cluster are the most stable among these studied clusters. The impurity B increases the stabilities of chromium cluster. When B is doped on the Cr n clusters, cluster geometry does dominate positive role in enhancing their stability. The doped B atom does not change the coupling way of the Cr site in Crn clusters, but breaks the symmetry and the Cr atoms are no longer equivalent. The doped B atom increases the total magnetic moments of Cr n in most cases.

Abstract:High resolution scattergrams of China map profile are etched on the CR-39 film within a small area of hundreds of microns x hundreds of microns by the AS-LIBB single proton microbeam, according to the coordinates of the standard images, which are acquired by the home-developed image-processing program. The testing results show that the single particle detection efficiency for this facility is over 98%, and the target-positioning accuracy is within 3 mu m. Moreover, the near-path traversing algorithm for stage control is optimal for irradiating scattergrams of picture profile, and the dots on CR-39 film for the measured results and the expected values are quite identical. Therefore, this single particle irradiation system meets to the demands of etching micron-dimensional pictures on CR-39 film in dot manner with single particles and the needs of the biological cell irradiation experiments.

Abstract:Charged particle diagnosis is an important aspect of laser–plasma experiments conducted at super-intense laser facilities. In recent years, Columbia Resin #39 (CR-39) detectors have been widely employed for detecting charged particles in laser–plasma experiments. This is because the CR-39 polymer does not respond to electromagnetic pulses or X-rays. This study presents a method for calibrating the relationship between particle energy and track diameter in a CR-39 detector (TasTrak®) using 3–8 MeV protons, 6–30 MeV carbon ions, and 1–5 MeV alpha particles. The particle tracks were compared under the manufacturer’s recommended etching conditions of 6.25 mol/l NaOH at 98 °C and under the widely adopted experimental conditions of 6.25 mol/l NaOH at 70 °C. The results show that if the NaOH solution concentration is 6.25 mol/l, then the temperature of 70 °C is more suitable for etching proton tracks than 98 °C and employing a temperature of 98 °C to etch alpha-particle and carbon-ion tracks can significantly reduce the etching time. Moreover, this result implies that C3+ ion or alpha-particle tracks can be distinguished from proton tracks with energy above 3 MeV by controlling the etching time. This calibration method for the CR-39 detector can be applied to the diagnosis of reaction products in laser–plasma experiments.
