Abstract:In order to study the effect of highly oxidizing dephosphorizing converter slag on the migration behaviour of phosphorus in molten steel, an industrial test was carried out on a 300t dephosphorizing converter in a steel plant by the duplex method. Theoretical analysis shows that when the temperature is low, the basicity is 1.5 and the FeO content is 25%–30%, the phosphorus capacity of slag is stable. The industrial test results show that when the temperature is 1630K–1665K, the basicity is 1.05–1.25, the FeO content is 35%–40%, and the dephosphorization efficiency of the converter can generally reach above 60%. XRD and SEM-EDS analysis results showed that phosphorus was mainly enriched in 2CaO·SiO 2 -3CaO·P 2 O 5 solid solution. Infrared analysis results show that under the condition of high FeO and low basicity, properly increasing of basicity is beneficial to reduce the degree of polymerization of dephosphorization slag.

Kinetics of Dephosphorization at Different Slag Basicities in the Double Slag Converter Steelmaking Process

Abstract:Combined with the temperature model from heat balance and the lime dissolution model, the dephosphorization kinetic model based on the coupled reaction model for the dephosphorization stage in the double slag converter steelmaking process is developed. Two hundred and twenty ton industrial experiments with the different end slag basicities are also conducted. The calculated values of [%P], [%C], [%Si], and slag basicities are in good agreements with the industrial experiment results at the different basicities. With the progress of dephosphorization, the rate of dephosphorization rises up rapidly at first, then drops down quickly, and increases again. With increasing basicity, the dephosphorization is promoted. When the end basicity is 2.20, the lowest P concentration is 0.0682 mass% with the highest P removal ratio of 51.63%. In the case of maintaining the other parameters to be the same values, with increasing basicity from 1.5 to 2.0, the final P concentration decreases regularly and the final P removal ratio increases from 29.66% to 56.99%. With the progress of dephosphorization, the temperature increases, the volume proportion of solid particles in slag decreases, and the mass transfer resistance in the slag decreases. Based on Pal–Einstein–Roscoe model, the calculated viscosity decreases.

Abstract:A thermodynamic calculation model of phosphorus distribution ratio between CaO-FeO-MgO-SiO2-MnO-TiO2-V2O5-P2O5 slags and molten metal has been developed based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory (IMCT). The calculated phosphorus distribution ratio shows a good agreement with the measured ones by the data of industrial trial, which proves the reliability of this model. Therefore, the model is used to study the effects of TiO2, V2O5, slag basicity, FeO, MgO and MnO on phosphorus distribution. The results illustrate that the effects on phosphorus distribution from V2O5 and TiO2 are non-negligible and they are almost the same, slag basicity and FeO have the most significant effects on phosphorus distribution, while MgO and MnO have the least.

Abstract:Given the accelerating depletion of iron ore resources, there is growing concern within the steel industry regarding the availability of high-phosphorus iron ore. However, it is important to note that the utilization of high-phosphorus iron ore may result in elevated phosphorus content and notable fluctuations in molten iron, thereby imposing additional challenges on the dephosphorization process in steelmaking. The most urgent issue in the process of converter steelmaking is how to achieve efficient dephosphorization. In this study, the influence of various factors on the logarithm of the phosphorus balance distribution ratio (lgLp), the logarithm of the P2O5 activity coefficient (lgγP2O5), and the logarithm of the phosphorus capacity (lgCp) were examined through thermodynamic calculations. The impact of each factor on dephosphorization was analyzed, and the optimal conditions for the dephosphorization stage of the converter were determined. Furthermore, the influence of basicity and FetO content on the form of phosphorus in the slag was analyzed using FactSage 7.2 software, and the precipitation rules of the slag phases were explored. The thermodynamic calculation results indicated that increasing the basicity of the dephosphorization slag was beneficial for dephosphorization, but it should be maintained below 3. The best dephosphorization effect was achieved when the FetO content was around 20%. The reaction temperature during the dephosphorization stage should be kept low, as the dephosphorization efficiency decreased sharply with the increasing temperature. In dephosphorization slag, Ca3(PO4)2 usually formed a solid solution with Ca2SiO4, so the form of phosphorus in the slag was mainly determined by the precipitation form and content of Ca2SiO4. The phases in the dephosphorization slag mainly consisted of a phosphorus-rich phase, an iron-rich phase, and a matrix phase. The results of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses were consistent with the thermodynamic calculation results.

Abstract:The metallurgical properties of blast furnace slag changed when high alumina iron ore was used extensively due to the resulting changes of the molten slag microstructure. In the study, based on typical CaO–MgO–SiO2–Al2O3 slag systems with different w(Al2O3) content, molecular dynamics simulation was used to calculate the microstructural properties of particles in the high-temperature slag system, such as bond length, partial radial distribution function, coordination numbers, and diffusion coefficient. In addition, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and 27Al solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (27Al SS MAS NMR) were used to detect and analyze the samples. The comprehensive calculations and experimental results show that increasing w(Al2O3) can enhance the structural stability of each ion pair, and the strength of the structural stability is such that Si–O > Al–O > Mg–O > Ca–O. The self-diffusion coefficients are as follows: Mg2+ > Ca2+ > Al3+ > Si4+, which leads to the transformation of the [SiO4]4−(Q0), [Si2O7]6−(Q1) and [Si2O6]4−(Q2) structural units to [Si2O5]2−(Q3). The degree of polymerization of slag increased as well as the stability of the structural units. Moreover, the coordination of Al will change from the [AlO6]9−octahedral structure of six-coordinated Al to the [AlO5]7−pentahedral structure of five-coordinated Al and the [AlO4]5−tetrahedral structure of four-coordinated Al. It was also found that the content of non-bridge oxygen in the whole slag system decreased continuously, leading to the increasing degree of polymerization of slag, and the experimental results were consistent with the molecular dynamics calculation.
Effect of W(mgo)/w(al2o3) Ratio and Basicity on Microstructure and Metallurgical Properties of Blast Furnace Slag

Abstract:The CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–MgO system is the main component unit in the slag formation process in blast furnace smelting. Its structural changes directly affect the high-temperature metallurgical properties of slag. Molecular dynamics simulations were thus conducted to analyze the microstructure changes of the quaternary slag system under different basicities and w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratios. The changes in w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio and basicity could affect the stability of each ion-oxygen. Increasing the basicity and w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio, the average coordination number of O surrounding Si atom only changed a little and remained approximately 4, indicating that Si exists as a stable structure of the [SiO4]4− tetrahedron in the slag structure, while the average coordination number of O surrounding Al atom changed greatly from 4 to 6, which indicated that the Al existence form could be transformed from [AlO4]5− tetrahedron to [AlO5]7− pentahedron and [AlO6]9− octahedron. Also, the diffusion rate of ions was accelerated with the increase in w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio and basicity. Moreover, the self-diffusion coefficients of each ion were obtained, and the magnitudes were observed to be in the following order: Mg2+ > Ca2+ > Al3+ > Si4+. The calculation and analysis of the slag viscosity and activation energy of viscous flow under different basicities and w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratios revealed that the metallurgical properties of slag at high temperature depend on the flow-unit diffusivity and the microstructure stability, simultaneously, the basicity should be controlled between 1.0 and 1.2, and the w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) ratio could be controlled between 0.45 and 0.55.
A Kinetic Study on Selective Leaching of Phosphorus from Dephosphorization Slag

Abstract:Phosphorus recovery from dephosphorization slag generated during steelmaking has enormous potential to secure a stable supply of phosphate. Because P and Fe in slag are concentrated in different mineral phases, P can be recovered by separation of the P-bearing phase, and the residue can be reutilized in steel plant at the same time. In the present study, we adopted selective leaching of P and investigated the effects of leaching parameters on the dissolution behavior of slag. It was determined that with the decrease in particle size and increase in stirring speed, the P dissolution ratio increased significantly. When particle size was less than 53 μm and stirring speed exceeded 200 rpm, most of the P-bearing C2S−C3P solid solution was dissolved and separated. Increasing temperature and decreasing the mass ratio of slag to liquid had a slight influence on promoting P dissolution, while the Si dissolution was significantly suppressed in the case of high temperature and mass ratio due to the formation of silica gel. The P dissolution ratio reached 84.9%, and the Fe dissolution was negligible. Through selective leaching, the residue primarily consisting of magnesioferrite could be used as a flux in steelmaking process. The shrinking core model was successfully used to describe the dissolution kinetics of P. As temperature increased, apparent rate constant increased slightly. The calculated activation energy was 9.23 kJ/mol, demonstrating that the P dissolution was controlled by diffusion in the residue layer.Graphical AbstractMost of the P-bearing solid solution in dephosphorization slag was dissolved and the dissolution of Fe-bearing phase was negligible, achieving selective leaching of P. Abstract:The specific surface area,average pore diameter,pore volume and bulk density of lime was analyzed by means of the automatic pressure mercury.The microstructure and composition of slag were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer.So the influence of various factors on the dephosphorization rate was determined.The results showed that with the increase of lime activity,the dephosphorization rate of lime gradually increased;with the increase of specific surface area and bulk density of lime,the dephosphorization rate of lime first increased and then decreased;with the increase of average pore diameter and pore volume of lime,the dephosphorization rate of lime gradually increased.The dephosphorization rate of most slag was above 66％,the highest value being 93.69％.

Abstract:In this paper, thermodynamic calculation and different binary slag interface reaction experiments are used to study the reaction characteristics of different binary slag. The differences in melting process, wetting and reaction behavior were studied. The wetting angle of acidic slag is higher than that the corresponding basic slag. The variation of wetting angle between different binary slag is relatively small. The variation range is only 18 degrees C. In the melting and reaction process of different binary slag interfaces, the permeation and reaction of the CaO - MgO and CaO - SiO2 interfaces are relatively sufficient. However, there is no obvious chemical reaction between CaO - Al2O3 and Al2O3 MgO, and the composition and interface separation among each component are more obvious.

Abstract:Slag is the heart of electroslag remelting (ESR) process. A new mathematical model to design the optimized slag for ESR was developed based on slag–metal equilibrium theory, ion and molecule coexistence theory and modified Butler’s equation. It was assumed that an overall thermodynamic equilibrium did exist at electrode tip–slag interface. With this model, the equilibrium slag and its surface tension could be obtained quantitatively when the initial compositions of consumable electrode were given. An industrial experiment with four types of slags was carried out in a special steel plant in China. The variation of Al, Si and Mn corresponded well with the deviation of corresponding oxide from equilibrium, reflecting the reasonability of the model. Besides that, the effects of Al in electrode as well as CaO, CaF2 and MgO in slag on the equilibrium slag, dissolved oxygen and surface tension were discussed in detail.

Abstract:Electro-slag refining process is widely employed in steel industry for the production of special alloys used in ocean, aeronautics, and nuclear industries. Because of the adverse effect on the ductility of metal, it is critical to remove oxygen in the process. This study established a transient three-dimensional (3D) coupled mathematical model for understanding oxygen transport behavior in the electro-slag refining process. The finite volume method was invoked to simultaneously solve mass, momentum, energy, and species conservation equations. Using the magnetic potential vector, Maxwell’s equations were solved, during which the obtained Joule heating and Lorentz force were coupled with the energy and momentum equations, respectively. The movement of metal–slag interface was described through the application of the volume of fluid (VOF) technique. Additionally, an auxiliary metallurgical kinetic module was introduced to determine the electrochemical reaction rate. An experiment was then conducted to validate the model, where the predicted oxygen contents agreed with the measured data within an acceptable accuracy range. Oxygen redistribution in both fluids is clarified: its transport rate at the metal droplet–slag interface is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that at the metal pool–slag interface. Further, the oxygen content in the metal pool is shown to increase with time, while the content in the slag layer is decreased. In order to effectively remove the oxygen in the metal, one more positive electrode, which is more likely to react with the oxygen, is proposed to be added in the unit.Graphical abstractDistributions of the electric streamlines and the phase distribution at 151.25 s with a current of 1800 A

Abstract:The wettability between the slag and refractory has an important relationship with the corrosion of refractory, which can elucidate the corrosion process and reveal the corrosion mechanism. In this work, the wetting process between different basicity slag and CA6 substrate was investigated via the sessile drop method. The wetting and spread process, morphology evolution, and ion diffusion behavior were characterized and analyzed, and the interface reactions were calculated by the thermodynamic simulation software FactSage 7.1. The results show that the slag spreading process can be divided into deformation, melting, and wetting three steps. The contact angle increased with the slag basicity increased. The driving force of the higher basicity slag to penetrate CA6 refractory is weaker, and the penetration depth is smaller, so the width of the reaction layer decreased with the slag basicity increasing, indicating the CA6 refractory has a better corrosion resistance for high basicity slag. The results of the thermodynamic simulations show that the higher basicity slag can generate CA2 faster, which can inhibit the slag corrosion rapidly, leading to the increment of contact angle and weaker wetting behavior for higher basicity slag. The CA6 refractory has great potential for application in high-quality steel smelting.

Abstract:Na2O is an alkaline oxide, which can significantly improve the dephosphorization ability of converter slag. The effect of Na2O on the dephosphorization of converter slag was analyzed with a high-temperature dephosphorization experiment in a MoSi2 resistance furnace. We found that the dephosphorization rate increased with the increase of (Na2O) in the dephosphorization slag. The elements of Ca, Si, O, and P in the dephosphorization slag are distributed in the same area, mainly in the form of phosphate minerals, such as Ca2SiO4·0.05Ca3(PO4)2 and 6Ca2SiO4·Ca3(PO4)2. After adding Na2O, part of the Na will replace the Ca in the phosphorus-containing phase to form Ca2SiO4·Ca2Na2(PO4)2. The industrial test showed that the average dephosphorization rate in the early stage of the test heats with the CaO-MgO-FeO-SiO2-0.5%Na2O slag system could reach 62.39%, which was 19.62% higher than that of the conventional heats. The average basicity of the final slag was 0.19% lower than that of the conventional heats, while w(P2O5) increased by 0.36%, and T.Fe decreased by 0.69%. The average consumption of the slagging materials was 35.93 kg/t, which was 7.24 kg/t less than that of the conventional heats. Through thermodynamic calculation, we found that with the increase of (Na2O), the phosphorus distribution ratio between slag and steel increased significantly, the area of the liquid phase zone of the slag system increased continuously, and the viscosity decreased continuously.

Wet magnetic separation of phosphorus containing phase from modified BOF slag

Abstract:Basic oxygen furnace slag was modified by addition of SiO2, remelted and cooled to 1400°C at a rate of 1°C min, then held for 240 min at this temperature, then quenched in water. The solidified slag was crushed, milled and then separated by a wet magnetic method at 0·35 T. X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and image analysis were used to investigate the separation of phosphorus containing phase from the slag. Results show that nearly all the phosphorus was enriched in the C2S phase in the modified slag which was separated into two layers, top and bottom (termed as modified slag-1 and slag-2), after solidification. The P2O5 in the non-magnetic materials from slag-1 is greater than 4%, which is almost twice than that of modified slag. C2S mineral particles in slag-1 have a larger mean size of 51 μm and most of them are well liberated, which were recovered efficiently at 0·35 T. It was also found that in slag-2, C2S minerals have limited separation owing to the highly interlinked mineral phases and a lower liberation degree resulting from their smaller crystal size. Compared with original slag, the phosphorus containing phase (i.e. C2S) with larger size in modified slag-1 will be picked up effectively. In conclusion, compared with original slag, modified slag not only obtained phosphorus concentrating phase whose phosphorus content is three times more than original slag, but also improved the separation performance at weak magnetic field by precipitation of spinel-ferric carrier mineral.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics is a method of studying microstructure and properties by calculating and simulating the movement and interaction of molecules. The molecular dynamics simulation method has become an important method for studying the structural and dynamic characteristics of slag systems and can make up for the shortcomings of existing detection methods and experiments. Firstly, this paper analyzes the development process and application fields of molecular dynamics, summarizes the general simulation steps and software algorithms of molecular dynamics simulation methods, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the algorithms and the common functions of the software. Secondly, the research status and application progress of molecular dynamics simulation methods in the study of phosphate, silicate, aluminate and aluminosilicate are introduced. On this basis, a method of combining molecular dynamics simulation with laboratory experiments is proposed, which will help obtain more accurate simulation results. This review provides theoretical guidance and a technical framework for the effective analysis of the microstructure of different slag systems via molecular dynamics, so as to finally meet the needs of iron and steel enterprises in producing high-quality steel grades.

Abstract:Urban Waste Incinerator Slag shows good performance in dephosphorization.When initial phosphate concentration is less than 200 mg/L,the dephosphorization rate is nearly 100%,and the figure is 67% at initial concentration of 1000 mg/L.Morphological analysis of phosphorus of the slag after dephosphorization shows that phosphate in solution is first absorbed by the slag and then react with metals in the slag such as Ca,Al,Fe,etc and turns into insoluble phosphorus such as Ca2-P,Ca8-P,Al-P,Fe-P,Ca10-P,etc.
Influence of the Basicity on Phosphorus Enrichment Properties of Decarbonization Slag in Low‐Carbon Double Slag Converter Steelmaking Process with Industrial Experiments, Mineralogy, and Ion–molecule Coexistence Theory

Abstract:The present work combines double slag converter steelmaking industrial experiments, mineralogy, and ion–molecule coexistence theory thermodynamics to clarify the influence of basicity on the phosphorus enrichment properties of decarburization slag from different perspectives. It is expected to develop and promote a converter steelmaking process with high dephosphorization efficiency, low lime consumption, and CO2 emissions to the industrial level, to achieve low‐cost clean production in iron and steel enterprises. To achieve low‐cost clean production in steelmaking plants, a low‐carbon double slag converter steelmaking process (LCDSP) with high dephosphorization efficiency, low lime consumption, and low CO2 emissions is focused on. The average lime consumption in LCDSP has decreased about 25.8%, which can reduce at least about 10.3 million m3 CO2 emissions per converter per year in the current steelmaking plant. The phosphorus enrichment properties of decarbonization slag with different basicities are comprehensively evaluated through LCDSP industrial experiments, mineralogy, and ion–molecule coexistence theory (IMCT). The increase of decarburization slag basicity (DSB) significantly improves the dephosphorization efficiency of molten steel. With increasing the DSB from 2.93 to 3.52, the typical morphology of the P‐rich phase extends from small pieces to long strips and then changes to block shapes with smooth edges. Finally, it forms a massive P‐rich phase with an area of more than 10 000 μm2 with a DSB of 3.80. The phosphorus enrichment properties of decarbonization slag with different DSBs evaluated using multiple perspectives show a consistent change trend. IMCT provides an accurate thermodynamic method for quantitatively predicting the phosphorus enrichment capacity in slag in two stages of LCDSP.

Study on the structural properties of refining slags by molecular dynamics with deep learning potential

Abstract:The CaO-Al2O3 is the most important basis of the multicomponent slag in the steel making industry. The microstructure of molten CaO-Al2O3 systems affects the physical, chemical, and metallurgic properties of refining slags. It is significant to establish a computational method to accurately describe the microstructure of the slag at the atomic level and speculate the properties of large slag models. In this paper, the effect of compositions on the structure of molten CaO-Al2O3 systems was studied by ab initio molecular dynamics, deep learning theory, and deep potential molecular dynamics. The structures of various molten slags were simulated by ab initio molecular dynamics, which accurately describes the interactions between atoms. The potential functions were obtained by deep learning theory. The properties of the large slag models were simulated by molecular dynamics with deep learning potential. As the molar fraction of CaO increases from 0.5 to 0.7, the combination of O and Al mainly forms [AlO4]-5, [AlO3]-3, and [AlO5]-7. Ca presents mainly as free cations in the molten CaO-Al2O3 system. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of Ca decreases from 9.0 × 10-10 m2/s to 5.4 × 10-10 m2/s. The diffusion coefficients of Al and O slightly decrease and are close to 1.1 × 10-10 m2/s and 3.0 × 10-10 m2/s, respectively. It is deduced that the dissolution of CaO provides free O2– and promotes the formation of [AlOn]-b and increases the polymerization degree, which causes deterioration of the fluidity of molten CaO-Al2O3 slags as XCaO increases from 0.5 to 0.7.

Abstract:Copper slag, which contains Fe-rich fayalite (Fe2SiO4), is a valuable solid waste that warrants further research in order to recover iron. Calcium oxide (CaO) can significantly enhance iron recovery from copper slag; however, the associated mechanism has not yet been explored. In this study, we investigated the interaction between CaO and Fe2SiO4 to obtain detailed understanding of the role of CaO in enhancing iron recovery. The presence of CaO was found to accelerate the decomposition of Fe2SiO4 via an ion-exchange-like process. Specifically, CaO dissociated into Ca(II) and a Ca-deficient Ca1-yO species at high temperatures. The Fe(II) ion at the M2 site of Fe2SiO4 was substituted by the released Ca(II) ion, resulting in the formation of [(Fe(2-x)Cax)SiO4]∙xFe(II). Subsequently, the substituted Fe(II) occupied the Ca vacancy in Ca1-yO to form (Ca(1-y)Fe(II)y)O. The disproportionation of Fe(II) and the combination reaction between CaO and the SiO2 separated from Fe2SiO4 led to the generation of the final products, viz. Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and CaSiO3. This study explains the specific role of CaO in decomposing Fe2SiO4. It would not only provide theoretical guidance for iron recovery from copper slag but also present a new perspective on the recycling of valuable resources from many other smelting slags (e.g., iron slag, lead slag, and nickel slag).

Abstract:The distribution of P in basic oxygen furnace steelmaking slag was investigated together with the enrichment behaviours of P in slowly cooled slag samples modified by SiO2 from high temperature remelts at 1873 K. The slag microstructures were characterised, and the results showed that only a limited fraction of P2O5 was dispersed in the matrix, whereas a large amount of P2O5 was found to form solid solutions with dicalcium silicate (2CaO.SiO2 or C2S) phase and/or with tricalcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2 or C3S) phase in original industrial slag. It was also found that when the basicity (C/S = CaO/SiO2) of slag modified by SiO2 was close to 3, the main phase was C2S, and most of the P in the modified slag was precipitated from solid solution in the C2S. The mechanism of P enrichment is also discussed.
