Abstract:Titanium (Ti) is attractive for using as protective coatings due to its excellent corrosion resistance. Ionic liquids (ILs) have been used to electrodeposit Ti for a long time, but only trace Ti has been obtained until now. Here Ti was electrodeposited in the 1-isobutyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([BisoMPyrr]NTf2) IL containing 0.2M TiCl4 onto the Ag substrate. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were utilized for characterization of the electrodeposits. It was found that only TiCl3 and TiO2 were detected. Electrochemical behavior of Ti(IV)was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), showing the reduction of Ti(IV) in [BisoMPyrr]NTf2 was a little complex. To understand the reduction process, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy was used for identification of the Ti species in the electrolyte, and only Ti(IV) was detected before the electrolyte was used. However, there is no Ti(IV) any longer in the solution after electrodeposition and the absorption peak of other Ti species is not obtained. From the above analysis, it could be seen that it was very difficult to directly reduce Ti(IV) completely to the metal in this IL and the detected TiO2 should be from the oxidation of trace Ti deposit.
