Abstract:Strong-laser-field physics is a research direction that relies on the use of high-power lasers and has led to fascinating achievements ranging from relativistic particle acceleration to attosecond science. On the other hand, quantum optics has been built on the use of low photon number sources and has opened the way for groundbreaking discoveries in quantum technology, advancing investigations ranging from fundamental tests of quantum theory to quantum information processing. Despite the tremendous progress, until recently these directions have remained disconnected. This is because the majority of the interactions in the strong-field limit have been successfully described by semi-classical approximations treating the electromagnetic field classically, as there was no need to include the quantum properties of the field to explain the observations. The link between strong-laser-field physics, quantum optics, and quantum information science has been developed in the recent past. Studies based on fully quantized and conditioning approaches have shown that intense laser-matter interactions can be used for the generation of controllable entangled and non-classical light states. These achievements open the way for a vast number of investigations stemming from the symbiosis of strong-laser-field physics, quantum optics, and quantum information science. Here, after an introduction to the fundamentals of these research directions, we report on the recent progress in the fully quantized description of intense laser-matter interaction and the methods that have been developed for the generation of non-classical light states and entangled states. Also, we discuss the future directions of non-classical light engineering using strong laser fields, and the potential applications in ultrafast and quantum information science.

High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena

Abstract:Recent years have seen tremendous progress in our understanding of the cosmos, which in turn points to even deeper questions to be further addressed. Concurrently the laser technology has undergone dramatic revolutions, providing exciting opportunity for science applications. History has shown that the symbiosis between direct observations and laboratory investigation is instrumental in the progress of astrophysics. We believe that this remains true in cosmology. Current frontier phenomena related to particle astrophysics and cosmology typically involve one or more of the following conditions: (1) extremely high energy events; (2) very high density, high temperature processes; (3) super strong field environments. Laboratory experiments using high intensity lasers can calibrate astrophysical observations, investigate underlying dynamics of astrophysical phenomena, and probe fundamental physics in extreme limits. In this article we give an overview of the exciting prospect of laser cosmology. In particular, we showcase its unique capability of investigating frontier cosmology issues such as cosmic accelerator and quantum gravity.

Abstract:Lasers have enjoyed from their very beginning a preeminent spot in the physical sciences not only for their obvious and by now ubiquitous technological role, but also as a testing ground for new and far reaching ideas. Haken’s felicitous characterization of the laser as the trailblazer of Synergetics was advanced in recognition of the laser’s conceptual contributions to our present understanding of pattern formation and cooperative phenomena [1–3]. The early focus of theoretical laser studies was on symmetry breaking phenomena in the time domain, and the field of laser instabilities that grew in response to the pioneering works of the early 1960’s came to be identified closely with the study of output pulsations and dynamical chaos [4].

Abstract:Integrated photonics have attracted considerable attention and have been applied in both classical and quantum optics,thus fulfilling the requirements for modern optical communication experiments.Due to the remarkable flexibility in the design of optical properties,glass materials are a current focus of extensive research for their potential in integrated photonic devices.In the field of glass materials,the diverse functional micro/nanostructures directly written inside glass by ultrafast lasers have received widespread attention from researchers.In this review,the research progress in ultrafast laser-induced controllable structures in glass is briefly described with an emphasis on the transition from controllable complex physical fields to materials chemistry.The future trends of research are also prospected.

Abstract:Quantum optics and classical optics have coexisted for nearly a century as two distinct, self-consistent descriptions of light. What influences there were between the two domains all tended to go in one direction, as concepts from classical optics were incorporated into quantum theory's early development. But it's becoming increasingly clear that a significant quantum presence exists in classical territory-and, in particular, that the quintessential quantum attribute, entanglement, can be seen, studied and exploited in classical optics. This blurring of the classical-quantum boundary has opened up a potential new direction for frontier work in optics.

Abstract:The advent of high-power ultra-short ultra-intense laser pulses opens up the new frontiers of relativistic nonlinear optics, high-field physics, laser-driven inertial confined fusion, etc. In recent years, with the construction of high power laser facilities at a multi-petawatt (PW) level and above, the interaction between laser and matter enters into a new realm of high field physics, where extremely rich nonlinear physics is involved. In addition to classical nonlinear physics involving wave-particle interactions, relativistic effects, and ponderomotive force effects, the quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects occur, such as radiation reaction force, electron-positron pair production, strong γ-ray radiation, QED cascades, and vacuum polarization. This paper presents a brief overview of electron-positron pair creation and bright γ-ray emission driven by the extremely intense laser fields.

Abstract:Nanoscale quantum optics explores quantum phenomena in nanophotonics systems for advancing fundamental knowledge in nano and quantum optics and for harnessing the laws of quantum physics in the development of new photonics-based technologies. Here, we review recent progress in the field with emphasis on four main research areas: Generation, detection, manipulation and storage of quantum states of light at the nanoscale, nonlinearities and ultrafast processes in nanostructured media, nanoscale quantum coherence, cooperative effects, correlations and many-body physics tailored by strongly confined optical fields. The focus is both on basic developments and technological implications, especially concerning information and communication technology, sensing and metrology, and energy efficiency.

Abstract:The latest development of research on femtosecond nonlinear optics is introduced in this article. Recent progress in ultrafast optics has allowed the generation of ultraintense light pulses comprising merely a few field oscillation cycles. The arising intensity gradient allows electrons to survive in their bound atomic state up to external field strengths many times higher than the binding Coulomb field and gives rise to ionization rates comparable to the light frequency resulting in a significant extension of the frontiers of nonlinear optics and (nonrelativistic) high field physics. Implications include the generation of coherent harmonic radiation up to keV photon energies.

Abstract:With the development of ultra-fast and ultra-strong laser technology,the interaction between light and matters in the strong-field regime has been extensively studied. At the same time,the rapid development of spatial light modulation technology in classic optics provides a new degree of freedom for optical manipulation. In recent years,the combination between these two different fields,namely,driving the intense-laser-matter interaction by the spatially structured light fields,has become one of the research hotspots in strong-field science. Strong-field ionization and high-order harmonic generation are two fundamental and important physical processes in traditional strong-field community. Here,the effect of optical vortex beams in strong-field ionization and its related research progress are first introduced. Then, the latest works of gas high-order harmonic generation driven by vortex beams or cylindrical vector beams in the past decade are introduced. At last,we look ahead to the prospects of intense spatially structured laser fields in strong-field physics.

Abstract:By precisely controlling the waveform of ultrashort laser fields, electronic and nuclear motions in molecules can be steered on extremely short time scales, even in the attosecond regime. This new research field, termed "optochemistry", presents the light field in the time-frequency domain and opens new avenues for tailoring molecular reactions beyond photochemistry. This Perspective summarizes the ultrafast laser techniques employed in recent years for manipulating the molecular reactions based on waveform control of intense ultrashort laser pulses, where the chemical reactions can take place in isolated molecules, clusters, and various nanosystems. The underlying mechanisms for the coherent control of molecular dynamics are explicitly explored. Challenges and opportunities coexist in the field of optochemistry. Advanced technologies and theoretical modeling are still being pursued, with great prospects for controlling chemical reactions with unprecedented spatiotemporal precision.

Abstract:In nonlinear optical systems, the optical superposition principle breaks down. The system’s response (including electric polarization, current density, etc) is not proportional to the stimulus it receives. Over the past half century, nonlinear optics has grown from an individual frequency doubling experiment into a broad academic field. The nonlinear optics has not only brought new physics and phenomena, but also has become an enabling technology for numerous areas that are vital to our lives, such as communications, health, advanced manufacturing, et al . This Roadmap surveys some of the recent emerging fields of the nonlinear optics, with a special attention to studies in China. Each section provides an overview of the current and future challenges within a part of the field, highlighting the most exciting opportunities for future research and developments.

Abstract:The past forty years have witnessed spectacular progress in precision measurements, beginning with the first coherent optical source, the HeNe CW laser. Almost immediately, the pioneers of the stable laser epoch introduced optical heterodyne techniques to explore the stability of the laser's optical frequency, expecting the few milliHertz linewidth predicted by the Schawlow-Townes formula for phase diffusion, and instead finding myriad physical processes that broaden and jiggle optical frequencies far beyond that narrow range. After a huge time and learning effort, most of these technical limitations can now be overcome. The paper is intended to offer a bystander/sometimes-participant's view into the advances in laser tools and the exciting scientific/technical worlds that were opened by them. Roughly one "zillion" further clever inventions and techniques have added capability to the laser and have enabled many bursts of productive research. Now, after nearly forty years of incremental progress, the astonishing reality is that within the past one year - absolute optical frequency measurements have suddenly become feasible, simple - even routine. This welcome and unexpected progress is based on the merger of techniques from the ultrastable lasers and the ultrafast lasers research communities. In a very real sense, these research objectives seem to be the exact opposites - the most unchanging versus the most quickly changing.
