Abstract:Non-classical and entangled light states are of fundamental interest in quantum mechanics and they are a powerful tool for the emergence of new quantum technologies. The development of methods that can lead to the generation of such light states is therefore of high importance. Recently, we have demonstrated that intense laser-matter interactions can serve towards this direction. Specifically, we have shown how the use of fully quantized approaches in intense laser-matter interactions and the process of high harmonic generation, can lead to the generation high photon-number non-classical (optical Schrödinger's "cat" or squeezed) and entangled states from the far-infrared (IR) to the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV). Here, after a brief introduction on the fundamentals, we summarize the operation principles of these approaches and we discuss the future directions of non-classical light engineering using strong laser fields, and the potential applications in ultrafast and quantum information science. Our findings open the way to a novel quantum nonlinear spectroscopy method, based on the interplay between the quantum properties of light with that of quantum matter.

Abstract:The development of sources delivering non-classical states of light is one of the main needs for applications of optical quantum information science. Here, we demonstrate the generation of non-classical states of light using strong-laser fields driving a solid-state system, by using the process of high-order harmonic generation, where an electron tunnels out of the parent site and, later on, recombines on it emitting high-order harmonic radiation, at the expense of affecting the driving laser field. Since in solid-state systems the recombination of the electron can be delocalized along the material, the final state of the electron determines how the electromagnetic field gets affected because of the laser-matter interaction, leading to the generation of entanglement between the electron and the field. These features can be enhanced by applying conditioning operations, i.e., quantum operations based on the measurement of high-harmonic radiation. We study non-classical features present in the final quantum optical state, and characterize the amount of entanglement between the light and the electrons in the solid. The work sets the foundation for the development of compact solid-state-based non-classical light sources using strong-field physics.

Abstract:With the development of ultra-fast and ultra-strong laser technology,the interaction between light and matters in the strong-field regime has been extensively studied. At the same time,the rapid development of spatial light modulation technology in classic optics provides a new degree of freedom for optical manipulation. In recent years,the combination between these two different fields,namely,driving the intense-laser-matter interaction by the spatially structured light fields,has become one of the research hotspots in strong-field science. Strong-field ionization and high-order harmonic generation are two fundamental and important physical processes in traditional strong-field community. Here,the effect of optical vortex beams in strong-field ionization and its related research progress are first introduced. Then, the latest works of gas high-order harmonic generation driven by vortex beams or cylindrical vector beams in the past decade are introduced. At last,we look ahead to the prospects of intense spatially structured laser fields in strong-field physics.

Abstract:The interaction of light and matter at the single-photon level is of central importance in various fields of physics, including, e.g., condensed matter physics, astronomy, quantum optics, and quantum information. Amplification of such quantum light–matter interaction can be highly beneficial to, e.g., improve device performance, explore novel phenomena, and understand fundamental physics, and has therefore been a long-standing goal. Furthermore, simulation of light–matter interaction in the regime of ultrastrong coupling, where the interaction strength is comparable to the bare frequencies of the uncoupled systems, has also become a hot research topic, and considerable progress has been made both theoretically and experimentally in the past decade. In this review, we provide a detailed introduction of recent advances in amplification of quantum light–matter interaction and simulation of ultrastrong light–matter interaction, particularly in cavity and circuit quantum electrodynamics and in cavity optomechanics.

Abstract:An important goal of modern condensed matter physics involves the search for states of matter with new emergent properties and desirable functionalities. Although the tools for material design remain relatively limited, notable advances have been recently achieved by controlling interactions at hetero-interfaces, precise alignment of low-dimensional materials and the use of extreme pressures . Here, we highlight a new paradigm, based on controlling light-matter interactions, which provides a new way to manipulate and synthesize strongly correlated quantum matter. We consider the case in which both electron-electron and electron-photon interactions are strong and give rise to a variety of novel phenomena. Photon-mediated superconductivity, cavity-fractional quantum Hall physics and optically driven topological phenomena in low dimensions are amongst the frontiers discussed in this perspective, which puts a spotlight on a new field that we term here "strongly-correlated electron-photon science."

Abstract:Quantum information science and atom optics are among the most active fields in modern physics. In recent years, many theoretical efforts have been made to combine these two fields. Recent experimental progresses have shown the in-principle possibility to perform scalable quantum information processing (QIP) with linear optics and atomic ensembles. One of our main activities is to use atomic qubits as quantum memory and exploit photonic qubits for information transfer and processing to achieve efficient linear optics QIP. On the one hand, utilizing the interaction between laser pulses and ultra-cold atomic ensembles we experimentally investigate the potentials of atomic ensembles in the gas phase to build quantum repeaters for long-distance quantum communication, that is, to develop a new technological solution for quantum repeaters making use of the effective qubit-type entanglement of two cold atomic ensembles by a projective measurement of individual photons by spontaneous Raman processes.

Abstract:The quantum nature of light enables potentially revolutionary communication technologies. Key to advancing this area of research is a clear understanding of the concepts of states, modes, fields, and photons. The concept of field modes carries over from classical optics, while the concept of state has to be considered carefully when treating light quantum mechanically. The term 'photon' is an overloaded identifier in the sense that it is often used to refer to either a quantum particle or the state of a field. This overloading, often used without placing in context, has the potential to obfuscate the physical processes that describe the reality we measure. We review the uses and relationships between these concepts using modern quantum optics theory, including the concept of a photon wave function, the modern history of which was moved forward in a groundbreaking paper in this journal by Iwo Białynicki-Birula, to whom this article is dedicated.

Quantum state engineering of light using intensity measurements and post-selection

Abstract:Quantum state engineering of light is of great interest for quantum technologies, particularly generating non-classical states of light, and is often studied through quantum conditioning approaches. Recently, we demonstrated that such approaches can be applied in intense laser-atom interactions to generate optical "cat" states by using intensity measurements and classical post-selection of the measurement data. Post-processing of the sampled data set allows to select specific events corresponding to measurement statistics as if there would be non-classical states of light leading to these measurement outcomes. However, to fully realize the potential of this method for quantum state engineering, it is crucial to thoroughly investigate the role of the involved measurements and the specifications of the post-selection scheme. We illustrate this by analyzing post-selection schemes recently developed for the process of high harmonic generation, which enables generating optical cat states bright enough to induce non-linear phenomena. These findings provide significant guidance for quantum light engineering and the generation of high-quality, intense optical cat states for applications in non-linear optics and quantum information science.

Abstract:Quantum-optical spectrometry is a recently developed shot-to-shot photon correlation-based method, namely using a quantum spectrometer (QS), that has been used to reveal the quantum optical nature of intense laser-matter interactions and connect the research domains of quantum optics (QO) and strong laser-field physics (SLFP). The method provides the probability of absorbing photons from a driving laser field towards the generation of a strong laser-field interaction product, such as high-order harmonics. In this case, the harmonic spectrum is reflected in the photon number distribution of the infrared (IR) driving field after its interaction with the high harmonic generation medium. The method was implemented in non-relativistic interactions using high harmonics produced by the interaction of strong laser pulses with atoms and semiconductors. Very recently, it was used for the generation of non-classical light states in intense laser-atom interaction, building the basis for studies of quantum electrodynamics in strong laser-field physics and the development of a new class of non-classical light sources for applications in quantum technology. Here, after a brief introduction of the QS method, we will discuss how the QS can be applied in relativistic laser-plasma interactions and become the driving factor for initiating investigations on relativistic quantum electrodynamics.
Photon bunching in high-harmonic emission controlled by quantum light

Abstract:Attosecond spectroscopy comprises several techniques to probe matter through electrons and photons. One frontier of attosecond methods is to reveal complex phenomena arising from quantum-mechanical correlations in the matter system, in the photon fields and among them. Recent theories have laid the groundwork for understanding how quantum-optical properties affect high-field photonics, such as strong-field ionization and acceleration of electrons in quantum-optical fields, and how entanglement between the field modes arises during the interaction. Here we demonstrate a new experimental approach that transduces some properties of a quantum-optical state through a strong-field nonlinearity. We perturb high-harmonic emission from a semiconductor with a bright squeezed vacuum field resulting in the emission of sidebands of the high-harmonics with super-Poissonian statistics, indicating that the emitted photons are bunched. Our results suggest that perturbing strong-field dynamics with quantum-optical states is a viable way to coherently control the generation of these states at short wavelengths, such as extreme ultraviolet or soft X-rays. Quantum correlations will be instrumental to advance attosecond spectroscopy and imaging beyond the classical limits.

On the other hand, building on our long experience in research on multi-photon entanglement, we are also working on a number of experiments in the field of QIP with particular emphasis on fault-tolerant quantum computation [6], photon-loss-tolerant quantum computation [7] and cluster-state based quantum simulation [8]. In future, by combining the techniques developed in the above quantum memory and multi-photon interference experiments, we will experimentally investigate the possibility to achieve quantum teleportation between photonic and atomic qubits, quantum teleportation between remote atomic qubits and efficient entanglement generation via classical feed-forward. The techniques that are being developed will lay the basis for future large-scale realizations of linear optical QIP with atoms and photons.

Abstract:Two emerging areas of research, attosecond and nanoscale physics, have recently started to merge. Attosecond physics deals with phenomena occurring when ultrashort laser pulses, with duration on the femto- and sub-femtosecond time scales, interact with atoms, molecules or solids. The laser-induced electron dynamics occurs natively on a timescale down to a few hundred or even tens of attoseconds (1 attosecond=1 as=10$^{-18}$ s), which is of the order of the optical field cycle. For comparison, the revolution of an electron on a $1s$ orbital of a hydrogen atom is $\sim152$ as. On the other hand, the second topic involves the manipulation and engineering of mesoscopic systems, such as solids, metals, and dielectrics, with nanometric precision. Although nano-engineering is a vast and well-established research field on its own, the combination with intense laser physics is relatively recent. We present a comprehensive theoretical overview of the tools to tackle and understand the physics that takes place when short and intense laser pulses interact with nanosystems, such as metallic and dielectric nanostructures. In particular, we elucidate how the spatially inhomogeneous laser-induced fields at a nanometer scale modify the laser-driven electron dynamics. Consequently, this has an important impact on pivotal processes such as above-threshold ionization and high-order harmonic generation. The deep understanding of the coupled dynamics between these spatially inhomogeneous fields and matter configures a promising way to new avenues of research and applications. Thanks to the maturity that attosecond physics has reached, together with the tremendous advance in material engineering and manipulation techniques, the age of atto-nano physics has begun, but it is still in an incipient stage.
Quantum theory for nonlinear optical effects in the ultra-strong light-matter coupling regime

Abstract:We present a microscopic quantum theory for nonlinear optical phenomena in semiconductor quantum well heterostructures operating in the regime of ultra-strong light matter coupling regime. This work extends the Power-Zienau-Wooley (PZW) formulation of quantum electrodynamics to account for nonlinear interactions based on a fully fermionic approach, without resorting to any bosonization approximation. It provides a unified description of the microcavity and the local field enhancement effects on the nonlinear optical response, thus encompassing the phenomena known as epsilon near zero (ENZ) effect. In particular, our theory describes the impact of the light-matter coupled states on the high frequency generation process, relevant for recent experimental investigations with polaritonic metasurfaces. We unveil the limitations of traditional single-particle approaches and propose novel design principles to optimize nonlinear conversion efficiencies in dense, microcavity-coupled electronic systems. The theoretical framework developed here provides an efficient tool for the development of advanced quantum optical applications in the mid-infrared and terahertz spectral domains. Furthermore, it establishes a foundation for exploring the quantum properties of the ultra-strong light-matter regime through frequency-converted polariton states.

Abstract:Advancements in quantum optics and squeezed light generation have revolutionized various fields of quantum science over the past three decades, with notable applications such as gravitational wave detection. Here, we extend the use of squeezed light to the realm of ultrafast quantum science. We demonstrate the generation of ultrafast, broadband quantum light pulses spanning 0.33 to 0.73 PHz using light field synthesizer and a four-wave mixing nonlinear process. Experimental results confirm that these pulses exhibit amplitude squeezing, which is consistent with theoretical predictions. This work lays the groundwork for a new field of ultrafast quantum science, enabling real-time studies of quantum light-matter interaction dynamics, which expect to reveal new physics. We also demonstrate the encoding of binary digital data onto these quantum light waveforms, synthesized with attosecond resolution, showcasing potential applications in secure quantum communication. This work paves the way for ultrafast quantum optoelectronics, quantum computing, and next-generation encrypted quantum communication networks, capable of achieving petahertz-scale data transmission speeds.

Abstract:The spatial features of a light field, such as in the form of the optical singularities, provide a new degree of freedom for the application of light fields in different areas of science and technology. However, although the exploration of structured light is growing rapidly, the investigation of strong-field photoionization using such light fields is noticeably lagging behind. Here, we present an experimental study that reveals the signatures of intense, structured light fields with controlled optical singularities in strong-field photoionization. The different types of optical singularities can be identified through photoionization observables,i.e., photoelectron momentum distributions(PMDs). By concurrently shifting the locations of the phase and polarization singularities, the focal electric field features can be designated, and subsequently, the photoionization appearances can be manipulated. In this process, the behaviors of the different intense optical singularities are clearly visualized by the PMDs. This work will advance both the strong-field science and singularity optics.
Topological strong field physics on sub-laser cycle time scale

Abstract:Sub-laser cycle time scale of electronic response to strong laser fields enables attosecond dynamical imaging in atoms, molecules and solids. Optical tunneling and high harmonic generation are the hallmarks of attosecond imaging in optical domain, including imaging of phase transitions in solids. Topological phase transition yields a state of matter intimately linked with electron dynamics, as manifested via the chiral edge currents in topological insulators. Does topological state of matter leave its mark on optical tunneling and sub-cycle electronic response? We identify distinct topological effects on the directionality and the attosecond timing of currents arising during electron injection into conduction bands. We show that electrons tunnel across the band gap differently in trivial and topological phases, for the same band structure, and identify the key role of the Berry curvature in this process. These effects map onto topologically-dependent attosecond delays in high harmonic emission and the helicities of the emitted harmonics, which can record the phase diagram of the system and its topological invariants. Thus, the topological state of the system controls its attosecond, highly non-equilibrium electronic response to strong low-frequency laser fields, in bulk. Our findings create new roadmaps in studies of topological systems, building on ubiquitous properties of sub-laser cycle strong field response - a unique mark of attosecond science.

Abstract:The maturity of fields such as optical physics and quantum optics has brought with it a new era where the photon represents a promising information resource. In the past few years, scientists and engineers have exploited multiple degrees of freedom of the photon to perform information processing for a wide variety of applications. Of particular importance, the transverse spatial degree of freedom has offered a flexible platform to test complex quantum information protocols in a relatively simple fashion. In this regard, novel imaging techniques that exploit the quantum properties of light have also been investigated. In this review article, we define the fundamental parameters that describe the spatial wavefunction of the photon and establish their importance for applications in quantum information processing. More specifically, we describe the underlying physics behind remarkable protocols in which information is processed through high-dimensional spatial states of photons with sub-shot-noise levels or where quantum images with unique resolution features are formed. We also discuss the fundamental role that certain imaging techniques have played in the development of novel methods for quantum information processing and vice versa.
