Abstract:One of the most remarkable advances in laser technology is the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) technique invented in mid-1980s, leading to a rapid development of a new class of compact ultraintense lasers, operating in a power range from terawatt to petawatt. When such a laser beam is focused onto a target with a focal spot of a few micrometers in diameter, the laser intensity on the target surface is extremely high. In this presentation we will concentrate on the applications of the ultraintense lasers in science, not including the exciting ultrafast phenomena such as the generation of attosecond pulses, the fast dynamics in chemistry, etc.

High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena

Abstract:Recent years have seen tremendous progress in our understanding of the cosmos, which in turn points to even deeper questions to be further addressed. Concurrently the laser technology has undergone dramatic revolutions, providing exciting opportunity for science applications. History has shown that the symbiosis between direct observations and laboratory investigation is instrumental in the progress of astrophysics. We believe that this remains true in cosmology. Current frontier phenomena related to particle astrophysics and cosmology typically involve one or more of the following conditions: (1) extremely high energy events; (2) very high density, high temperature processes; (3) super strong field environments. Laboratory experiments using high intensity lasers can calibrate astrophysical observations, investigate underlying dynamics of astrophysical phenomena, and probe fundamental physics in extreme limits. In this article we give an overview of the exciting prospect of laser cosmology. In particular, we showcase its unique capability of investigating frontier cosmology issues such as cosmic accelerator and quantum gravity.

Abstract:The research topic of air lasing is of fundamental and practical importance, which has grown rapidly in the past decade. Air lasing, or a laser-like emission from air species including atomic oxygen, atomic argon, atomic nitrogen, molecular nitrogen, and molecular nitrogen ions, has been investigated vastly in both experiment and theory. In this review, the basic concepts of air lasing are discussed and the crucial role of quantum coherence in the air-lasing process is highlighted. As an exciting perspective, air lasing not only exhibits important fundamental physics such as superradiance, nonlinear effects, vibrational and rotational dynamics, but also shows potential practical implications toward remote sensing.

Abstract:The propagation of ultrashort, ultra-intense laser pulses gives rise to strongly nonlinear processes. In particular, filamentation is observed; :yielding a ionized, conducting plasma channel where white-light supercontinuum due to self-phase modulation occurs. This supercontinuum, extending from the UV to the IR, is a suitable "white laser" source for atmospheric remote sensing, and especially Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging). Recent significant results in this regard are presented, as well as lightning control using ultrashort laser pulses. The application of ultrashort-pulse lidar to aerosol monitoring is also discussed.

Abstract:Driven by flexibility, precision, repeatability and eco-friendliness, laser-based technologies have attracted great interest to engineer or to analyze materials in various fields including energy, environment, biology and medicine. A major advantage of laser processing relies on the ability to directly structure matter at different scales and to prepare novel materials with unique physical and chemical properties. It is also a contact-free approach that makes it possible to work in inert or reactive liquid or gaseous environment. This leads today to a unique opportunity for designing, fabricating and even analyzing novel complex bio-systems. To illustrate this potential, in this paper, we gather our recent research on four types of laser-based methods relevant for nano-/micro-scale applications. First, we present and discuss pulsed laser ablation in liquid, exploited today for synthetizing ultraclean “bare” nanoparticles attractive for medicine and tissue engineering applications. Second, we discuss robust methods for rapid surface and bulk machining (subtractive manufacturing) at different scales by laser ablation. Among them, the microsphere-assisted laser surface engineering is detailed for its appropriateness to design structured substrates with hierarchically periodic patterns at nano-/micro-scale without chemical treatments. Third, we address the laser-induced forward transfer, a technology based on direct laser printing, to transfer and assemble a multitude of materials (additive structuring), including biological moiety without alteration of functionality. Finally, the fourth method is about chemical analysis: we present the potential of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, providing a unique tool for contact-free and space-resolved elemental analysis of organic materials. Overall, we present and discuss the prospect and complementarity of emerging reliable laser technologies, to address challenges in materials’ preparation relevant for the development of innovative multi-scale and multi-material platforms for bio-applications.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:Investigation into the properties and structure of unstable nuclei far from stability is a key avenue of research in modern nuclear physics. These efforts are motivated by the continual observation of unexpected structure phenomena in nuclei with unusual proton-to-neutron ratios. In recent decades, laser spectroscopy techniques have made significant contributions in our understanding of exotic nuclei in different mass regions encompassing almost the entire nuclear chart. This is achieved through determining multiple fundamental properties of nuclear ground and isomeric states, such as nuclear spins, magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments and charge radii, via the measurement of hyperfine structures and isotope shifts in the atomic or ionic spectra of the nuclei of interest. These properties offer prominent tests of recently developed state-of-the-art nuclear theory and help to stimulate new developments in improving the many-body methods and nucleon–nucleon interactions at the core of these models. With the aim of exploring more exotic short-lived nuclei located ever closer to the proton and neutron driplines, laser spectroscopy techniques, with their continuous technological developments towards higher resolution and higher sensitivity, are extensively employed at current- and next-generation radioactive ion beam facilities worldwide. Ongoing efforts in parallel promise to improve the availability of these even more exotic species at next-generation facilities. Very recently, an innovative application of laser spectroscopy on molecules containing short-lived nuclei has been demonstrated offering additional opportunities for several fields of research, e.g. fundamental symmetry studies and astrophysics. In this review, the basic nuclear properties measurable with laser spectroscopy will be introduced. How these observables are associated with nuclear structure and nucleon–nucleon interactions will be discussed. Following this, a general overview of different laser spectroscopy methods will be given with particular emphasis on technical advancements reported in recent years. The main focus of this article is to review the numerous highlights that have resulted from studying exotic nuclei in different mass regions with laser spectroscopy techniques since the last edition in this series. Finally, the challenges facing the field in addition to future opportunities will be discussed.

Abstract:The possibility of stimulated light emission was discussed by Einstein in 1917, eight years before the quantum-mechanical description of energy levels of many-electron systems. Though it is imperative to use samples having optical properties greatly different from the stan dard continuous spectrum of opaque objects ("black body" radia tion) it is not always necessary to restrict the study to monatomic entities. Thus, spectral lines can be obtained (in absorption and in emission) from lanthanide compounds, containing from one to thir teen 4f electrons going from trivalent cerium to ytterbium, that are nearly as sharp as the ones from gaseous atoms. However, the presence of adjacent atoms modifies the simple picture of an isolated electron configuration, and in particular, it is possible to pump excited levels efficiently by energy transfer from species with intense absorption bands, such as the inter-shell transitions of other lanthanides and of thallium(I), lead(II) and bismuth(III) or the electron transfer bands of the uranyl ion or other complexes. On the other hand, it is possible to diminuish the mUlti-phonon relaxation (competing with sharp line luminescence) by selecting vitreous or crystalline materials with low phonon energies. Obviously, one cannot circumvent the conservation of energy by lasers, but they may have unprecedented consequences for the future by allowing nuclear fusion of light elements, effects of non-linear optics and time-resolved spectroscopy, besides the more conventional applications of coherent light beams with negligible angular extension.
Short-wavelength free-electron laser sources and science: a review

Abstract:This review is focused on free-electron lasers (FELs) in the hard to soft x-ray regime. The aim is to provide newcomers to the area with insights into: the basic physics of FELs, the qualities of the radiation they produce, the challenges of transmitting that radiation to end users and the diversity of current scientific applications. Initial consideration is given to FEL theory in order to provide the foundation for discussion of FEL output properties and the technical challenges of short-wavelength FELs. This is followed by an overview of existing x-ray FEL facilities, future facilities and FEL frontiers. To provide a context for information in the above sections, a detailed comparison of the photon pulse characteristics of FEL sources with those of other sources of high brightness x-rays is made. A brief summary of FEL beamline design and photon diagnostics then precedes an overview of FEL scientific applications. Recent highlights are covered in sections on structural biology, atomic and molecular physics, photochemistry, non-linear spectroscopy, shock physics, solid density plasmas. A short industrial perspective is also included to emphasise potential in this area.

Abstract:The present discussion deals with some theoretical aspects associated with the description of molecular rate processes in the presence of intense laser radiation, where the radiation actually interacts with the molecular dynamics. Whereas for weak and even moderately intense radiation, the absorption and stimulated emission of photons by a molecular system can be described by perturbative methods, for intense radiation, perturbation theory is usually not adequate. Limiting the analysis to the gas phase, an attempt is made to describe nonperturbative approaches applicable to the description of such processes (in the presence of intense laser radiation) as electronic energy transfer in molecular (in particular atom-atom) collisions; collision-induced ionization and emission; and unimolecular dissociation.
New Developments in Laser-Based Photoemission Spectroscopy and its Scientific Applications: a Key Issues Review

Abstract:The significant progress in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in last three decades has elevated it from a traditional band mapping tool to a precise probe of many-body interactions and dynamics of quasiparticles in complex quantum systems. The recent developments of deep ultraviolet (DUV, including ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet) laser-based ARPES have further pushed this technique to a new level. In this paper, we review some latest developments in DUV laser-based photoemission systems, including the super-high energy and momentum resolution ARPES, the spin-resolved ARPES, the time-of-flight ARPES, and the time-resolved ARPES. We also highlight some scientific applications in the study of electronic structure in unconventional superconductors and topological materials using these state-of-the-art DUV laser-based ARPES. Finally we provide our perspectives on the future directions in the development of laser-based photoemission systems.

Abstract:Since the first observation of high order harmonic generation (HOHG) in a rare gas jet, the creation of ultrashort laser pulses in the extreme UV (XUV) has been a field of continuous development. The increasing accessibility of femtosecond lasers and chirped pulsed amplifiers (CPA) has helped to fuel research into the fundamentals of the HOHG process [1], its practical implementation and tentative uses of such a source in spectroscopy. One of our particular interests in the use of this facility is to study the ability of these ultrashort pulses to initiate photochemical processes on clean or adsorbate-covered (SF6 or CCl4) silicon surfaces. More recently, femtosecond or even atto-second laser pulses has been evoked as being the best tools to photo-ablate polymeric materials [2]. VUV studies [3] also demonstrate that higher photon energies applied on the same kind of matter can decrease dramatically the threshold fluence for the onset of ablation. We seek to determine exactly what happens when both conditions (ultrafast and VUV pulses) are combined during irradiation.

Abstract:Further development of lasers and laser systems is driving applications in optical sensing and analysis in various in various wideranging areas such as the military, industry, security, medicine and chemistry.For analytical purposes in the field, laser sources need to be compact, rugged, tunable in wavelength and of sufficient power to provide quality data for temperature, species composition, and velocity determination.Another aspect in laser-based analytical measurements is the speed with which data can be collected, which is limited -except for constraints in detector electronics -by the repetition rate and wavelength flexibility (if required) of the employed laser systems.Considerable progress has been made in recent years in high repetition-rate pulsed laser systems with pulse energies in the hundreds of milli-joule range that make even optical diagnostics methods with inherently low signal intensity, such as Raman spectroscopy, feasible for long range detection.This special issue is aimed at scientists, engineers, and practitioners interested in understanding the basic principles and diagnostics purposes of a variety of laser-based methods for the quantitative detection and monitoring of essential parameters in probed samples of different origin and aggregate state, i.e., gas, liquid or solid.Its intent is to bring together the development areas of the necessary equipment (lasers, detectors, optics) as well as the methods themselves, and new approaches.But it is also diverse in its applications in chemical, biophysical, combustion, and environmental analysis.As such, interactions within the field often involve a wide diversity and a strong interdisciplinary exchange among researchers.The Sixteenth Topical Meeting on Laser Applications to Chemical, Security, and Environmental Analysis (LACSEA) was the latest in a long line of

Abstract:With the rapid developing of high energy lasers and ultrashort high intensity lasers, high energy density conditions, which widely exist in astronomical environment and nuclear explosion, can be created in laboratories.
