Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations have enabled numerous novel applications, such as frequency conversion, all-optical modulation, and ultrafast optical switching. Recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allow unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. In this chapter, we discuss the concepts of nonlinear optical effects and introduce several nonlinear optical applications, including broadband terahertz source based on plasmonic metasurfaces, nonlinear Fano resonances, and nonlinear interaction of topological graphene plasmons.

Abstract:<p>By using sequential ion implantation, Feng Chen and co‐workers implement a three‐layer hierarchical nanostructure in LiNbO<sub>3</sub> crystal with embedded plasmonic Cu and Ag nanoparticles in article number <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/smll.202003172">2003172</a>. Under excitation of a femtosecond laser, the ultrafast dynamic response of the nanostructure is tailored through the scattering mechanism at the interface between Cu and Ag nanoparticle layers. The optical nonlinearity is enhanced owing to the synergistic effect of the plasmonic nanoparticles, which suggests potential applications in nonlinear photonic devices. </p>

Abstract:Integrated photonics has for several years included in its panoply the development of functions based on third-order non-linear optical phenomena, from the generation of supercontinuum or frequency comb sources to metrology or spectroscopy on chip applications. This natural evolution, after the development of high-speed transceivers in the last few years, particularly in silicon photonics, is based on a number of compromises and still has to solve problems, particularly concerning the integration of nonlinear materials on silicon and their exploitation. The work we present addresses two directions. The first is oriented towards the development of a supercontinuum source using Nitrogen-rich photonic circuits from an industrial CMOS platform, while the second aims at the development of hybrid highly nonlinear waveguides significantly reducing the impact of twophoton absorption in the telecom window around 1,55μm by exploiting silicon slot waveguides infiltrated by chalcogenide glasses (As2S3).

Abstract:In nonlinear optical systems, the optical superposition principle breaks down. The system’s response (including electric polarization, current density, etc) is not proportional to the stimulus it receives. Over the past half century, nonlinear optics has grown from an individual frequency doubling experiment into a broad academic field. The nonlinear optics has not only brought new physics and phenomena, but also has become an enabling technology for numerous areas that are vital to our lives, such as communications, health, advanced manufacturing, et al . This Roadmap surveys some of the recent emerging fields of the nonlinear optics, with a special attention to studies in China. Each section provides an overview of the current and future challenges within a part of the field, highlighting the most exciting opportunities for future research and developments.

Abstract:chi((3)) nonlinearity enables ultrafast femtosecond scale light-to-light coupling and manipulation of intensity, phase, and frequency. chi((3)) nonlinear functionality in micro- and nanoscale photonic waveguides can potentially replace bulky fiber platforms for many applications. In this Review, we summarize and comment on the progress on chi((3)) nonlinearity in chip-scale photonic platforms, including several focused hot topics such as broadband and coherent sources in the new bands, nonlinear pulse shaping, and all-optical signal processing. An outlook of challenges and prospects on this hot research field is given at the end.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical (NLO) processes in pi-electron organic and polymer systems have attracted considerable interest because their understanding has led onto many compelling technological promise as well as the discovery of new phenomena, new theoretical insights, and new materials and devices. In recent years, as the field has progressed toward technological applications, the main issues have focused on high-performance materials that comply with device manufacturing and end-use conditions. New challenges in materials synthesis are being presented. In has now been demonstrated on pilot plant scales that high-performance electro-optic polymer thin films can be routinely used in optoelectronic integrated circuit fabrication in existing microelectronic device manufacturing facilities. The key steps are standard, including spin coating, photolithography, etching, metallization, and multilayer assembly. Nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) have been incorporated into various NLO polymers and the optical properties of the nanocomposite films have been studied by femtosecond laser Z-scan instrumentation. Nanodevices have been fabricated by UV-assisted imprinting fabrication techniques. Photonic devices based on nanomaterials and ring resonators e.g., optical switches and dispersion compensators, are discussed.
Topology Optimization in Nonlinear Nanophotonics: from Frequency Conversion to Exceptional Points

Abstract:We apply a large-scale inverse design strategy based on topology optimization (TO) toward the automatic discovery of complex nanophotonic structures-new kinds of micropillars, photonic-cyrstal slabs, and waveguides comprising complicated arrangements of subwavelength dielectrics-exhibiting unusual nonlinear and spectral properties. The structures support multiple, tightly confined resonances at far-away wavelengths and exhibit the largest nonlinear confinement factors predicted thus far (oders of magnitude larger than state-of-the-art ring resonators or PhC cavities), leading to highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversion (NFC). The same TO approach can be exploited to design PhCs supporting dual-polarization, dual-wavelength, or highly degenerate Dirac cones, with implications to zero-index metamaterials, topological photonics, and exceptional points (EP).

Abstract:Plasmonic nanolasers using sub-diffraction-limit plasmonic cavity modes can pursue extreme lasing conditions with ultrahigh optical confinement. Recent progresses on plasmonic nanolasers from both theoretical and experimental aspects are introduced in article number 1900334 by Xin Guo, Limin Tong and co-workers; future prospects, challenges and laser identification are discussed. The cover image illustrates the way to push the limit of lasing conditions with increasing confinement of lasing modes from one, two to prospectively three dimensions in these nanolasers.

Abstract:Broadband dispersion free, large and ultrafast nonlinear material platforms comprise the essential foundation for the study of nonlinear optics, integrated optics, intense field optical physics, and quantum optics. Despite substantial research efforts, such material platforms have not been established up to now because of intrinsic contradictions between large nonlinear optical coefficient, broad operating bandwidth, and ultrafast response time. In this work, a broadband dispersion free, large and ultrafast nonlinear material platform based on broadband epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material is experimentally demonstrated, which is designed through a novel physical mechanism of combining structural dispersion and material dispersion. The broadband ENZ material is constructed of periodically nanostructured indium tin oxide (ITO) films, and the structure is designed with the help of theoretical predictions combined with algorithm optimization. Within the whole broad ENZ wavelength range (from 1300 to 1500 nm), a wavelength-independent and large average nonlinear refractive index of −4.85 × 10−11 cm2/W, which is enlarged by around 20 times than that of an unstructured ITO film at its single ENZ wavelength, and an ultrafast response speed at the scale of Tbit/s are experimentally reached simultaneously. This work not only provides a new approach for constructing nonlinear optical materials but also lays the material foundation for the application of nanophotonics.

Abstract:Nonlinear photonic crystals are microstructures with quadratic nonlinearity (chi((2))) that have been extensively used for the generation and control of coherent light at new frequencies. Thanks to the recent invention of 3D chi((2))-nonlinearity engineering techniques using femtosecond laser pulses, studies of intense light interaction with 3D nonlinear photonic crystals are now experimentally feasible. Here we review the latest research advances in nonlinear photonic crystals, focusing especially on the fabrication, characterization, and application of 3D structures. We also discuss the future development of 3D nonlinear photonic crystals with properties and functionalities that are either difficult or virtually impossible to achieve with lower dimensional structures. Abstract:With its unique and exclusive linear and nonlinear optical characteristics, epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) photonics has drawn a tremendous amount of attention in the recent decade in the fields of nanophotonics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, light-matter interactions, material science, applied optical science, etc. The extraordinary optical properties, relatively high tuning flexibility, and CMOS compatibility of ENZ materials make them popular and competitive candidates for nanophotonic devices and on-chip integration in all-optical and electro-optical platforms. With exclusive features and high performance, ENZ photonics can play a big role in optical communications and optical data processing. In this review, we give a focused discussion on recent advances of the theoretical and experimental studies on ENZ photonics, especially in the regime of nonlinear ENZ nanophotonics and its applications. First, we overview the basics of the ENZ concepts, mechanisms, and nonlinear ENZ nanophotonics. Then the new advancements in theoretical and experimental optical physics are reviewed. For nanophotonic applications, the recent decades saw rapid developments in various kinds of different ENZ-based devices and systems, which are discussed and analyzed in detail. Finally, we give our perspectives on where future endeavors can be made. © 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity of microfibers and nanofibers is of great importance due to a variety of applications like supercontinuum generation, harmonic generation and optical switching. We carefully examine the Lorentz optical force in silica OMNFs and show that optomechanical effect contributes significantly to the value of the nonlinear index.

Abstract:Kerr nonlinearity in nanophotonic cavities provides a versatile platform to explore fundamental physical sciences and develop novel photonic technologies. This is driven by the precise dispersion control and significant field enhancement with nanoscale structures. Beyond dispersion and pump engineering, the direct control of Kerr nonlinearity can release the ultimate performance and functionality of photonic systems. Here, we report the in situ control of integrated Kerr nonlinearity through its interplay with the cascaded Pockels nonlinear process. Kerr nonlinearity is tuned over 10~dB dynamic range without modifying photonic structures. Fano resonance is observed with nonlinear spectrum, in contrast to standard linear transmission. This confirms the quantum interference between competing optical nonlinear pathways. Besides nonlinearity enhancement, we also demonstrate the novel capability to suppress the material intrinsic nonlinearity. Finally, we use the tunable nonlinearity to control the spectral brightness and coincidence-to-accidental ratio of single-photon generation. This work paves the way towards the complete nanoscale control of optical nonlinear processes at quantum level.

Abstract:We review recent research on nonlinear optical interactions in optical-fiber nanowires (OFNs) with sub-micron transverse dimensions. Such OFNs, which are fabricated from standard optical fibers, offer numerous beneficial optical and mechanical properties, including strong evanescent fields, high flexibility and configurability, a small mass, and low-loss interconnection to other optical fibers and fiberized components. In particular, the strong confinement of light enables a large enhancement of nonlinear interactions and group-velocity dispersion engineering. The combination of these properties makes OFNs ideal for many nonlinear optical applications, including harmonic generation, Brillouin scattering, four-wave mixing, supercontinuum generation, and optomechanics. With the incorporation of new materials, OFNs should be ideally suited for a host of nonlinear optical interactions and devices and offer great potential in miniature fiber devices for optical telecommunications and optical sensor applications.
