Abstract:Thin gauge non oriented electrical steels are increasingly produced for the demand on rotating motors in new energy vehicles. Although their microstructure and texture should be similar to their conventional thickness counterparts, difference exists due to the thinner hot rolled sheets, the higher cold rolling reduction and possible surface effect of final sheets annealed at high temperature. In this work a 2.1mm thick thin gauge hot rolled sheet from industry was normalization-annealed to prepare different initial grain sizes. Then they are cold rolled by 87.1% reduction to 0.27mm thick and finally annealed at different temperature and different holding time to investigate microstructure and texture evolution. Results reveal that as initial grain sizes increase, final annealing textures are improved significantly with more {100}<021> or {114}<481> components. In contrast, the final grain sizes show complicated influences from both initial grain sizes and final annealing temperature or holding time because of grain growth. The increase of annealing temperature from 800°C to 960°C leads to five times coarsening of average grain sizes, whereas an increase of holding time at 960°C from 3min to 10min results in a roughly 1.5 to 2 times coarsening of average grain size and an increase of grains touching sheet surface from 71% to 94%. The final textures are clearly the type of grain growth rather than recrystallization texture. Larger initial grain sizes show better magnetic properties due to enhanced {100}<021> or {114}<481> texture.
