Abstract:Marco Polo (1254-1324), an Italian explorer, was the first foreigner to record Beijing in his writings. His book, Travels of Marco Polo, praised China's mature arts and the rich, civilized lifestyles of its citizens. He also paid tribute to Beijing's beautiful scenes, which fascinated people throughout the world for nearly 1,000 years.

Abstract:Abstract When Marco Polo left China, he passed through Hangzhou (Quinsai) and then travelled approximately southwestwards into what is today Fujian province, to the cities of Fuzhou and Quanzhou (Zaiton). There are still a number of disagreements regarding his route, however, which are discussed here. Consideration is also given to Marco’s use of “Facfur” to designate the last Emperor of the Song dynasty, and more generally to the issue of the use of Persian language in Yuan China. It is suggested that there is no clear evidence that Marco Polo learned Persian. An error regarding consumption of pepper in China during the thirteenth century is corrected. More evidence of the importation of very substantial quantities of pepper into China during the Song and Yuan periods is adduced. Identifications of all the places which Marco mentions in this section of his book are suggested, with the support of evidence.

Abstract:This study examines international tourists' experiences in Beijing's Silk Market, one of the China's most well-known tourist markets. Tourists' spontaneous reviews on TripAdvisor were analyzed through Leximancer, a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software. The study confirms that markets can be major tourism attractions and can provide important experiences for international tourists. Most international tourists were impressed with their Silk Market trip. The dominant narratives of their experiences were the “price” of the items they “bought”, the “fun” of “bargaining”, and the “fake” quality of the products. Further analyses show that different satisfaction groups used somewhat different narratives to represent their shopping experiences and that male international tourists enjoyed the Silk Market experiences more than their female counterparts.

Abstract:Marco Polo and his knowledge of Asian languages Marco Polo (1254–1324) claimed (or rather his editors) that he could speak (and read) in other languages in ad dition to his own, at least five. Although he spoke little Chinese or rather not, he spoke a number of languages used in East Asia at the time – most likely Turkic (in the Kuman dialect: (lingua) tartara; tartaresce; tartaresche), which was also spoken among Mongols, Arabized Per sians, Uighurs and perhaps even he knew Mongolian. While communicating with the Great Khan, Marco Polo was almost certainly able to speak and write Mongolian. Marco Polo usually referred to Chinese local names in Persian, so it is very likely that he spoke Persian and was able to read the Arabic script. In addition, Persian was the lingua franca used throughout the region at the time even at Kublai Khan’s court. The paper brings some particular examples from Marco’s Mss.

Abstract:Since 1980's,while great changes happened in the field of Chinese history,a group of American historians specialized in the studies of Chinese countryside and began to turn their attention into Chinese cities,Susan Naquin is one of them.Her book,Peking: Temples and City Life,1400 ～ 1900,stressed on many aspect of urban life with many creative opinions.The book is a landmark for both the study of Beijing's history and Chinese urban history.In the terms of social and cultural history,the highlight of Naquin's analysis is the process of the syncretization of the inner and outer city,the upper and lower social classes,immigrations and natives,Han and Manchurians during the communal activities around temples,from which the identity of a capital came into being.Her book showed her special angle of research on the life of Beijing city.

Abstract:As the first European to claim that he travelled to China and back, Marco Polo is a celebrated traveller who described the multicultural society of Eurasia in the thirteenth to fourteenth centuriesad. However, his famed account, theTravels of Marco Polo, contains many unsolved mysteries which have generated discussion among historians, while an archaeological approach has been even less convincing because the material that may link to Marco Polo is very rare. A recent re-analysis of Chinese ceramics from a wide geographical area ranging from southern China to the Indian Ocean provides some archaeological support: it suggests that a Chinese porcelain jar housed in the Treasury of San Marco in Venice dates to the era of Marco Polo and is associated with his journey to China.

Abstract:In this article,literature review and logical reasoning are employed to analyze several documents about Persian Polo.Research findings show: it cannot be proved that "Boluolin" recorded in Jingxing Records has something to do with Polo;Polo described in Kings reflects a kind of national spirit in FeiErDuoXi era rather than historical fact in Wusi period in Bosika era;Quqiu described in the latter half of Xirongzhuan in the Combination of the New and the Old Tang Books cannot equal Polo;Pompilius,a Persian king recorded in Xirongzhuan of the Old Tang Book and Xiyuchuan of the New Tang Book is a historical figure in the seventh or eighth century,while there are records about Polo in Central Plains in the fifth or sixth century,so Polo in Central Plains cannot be derived from Persia.Besides phonological studies and historical statistics prove that "Boluo" isn't the then Polo.It is concluded that the several documents cannot prove true the statement that Polo in Central Plains originates from Persia.

Abstract:Focusing on A Sketch of Sites and Objects in the Imperial Capital (Dijing jingwul- üe, 1635), this article examines how the primary author, Liu Tong (1593–1636), created and preserved the cultural memory of Beijing through writing the city’s scenic sites in the waning years of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Liu Tong, who sojourned in the capital then situated on the state’s frontier, observed Beijing during a period of comprehensive decay. This temporal and spatial framework affected the way he observed Beijing’s northern landscape features and inspired him to both preserve the city’s literary and historical heritage and report on its current dilapidation. This study addresses Liu Tong’s literary strategies to preserve Beijing’s literary legacy and surviving landscapes, with particular attention to his adaptation of earlier travel writings about Beijing, his development of a new lyrical style of prose, and the portrayal of the immediate reality of his lived experience.

Abstract:The Ming and Qing Dynasty was the prosperous time of leisure culture development in ancient Beijing.The change of custom brought tremendous influence on leisure activities in Beijing.The folk in Beijing after Wanli during the Ming Dynasty pursured material enjoyment and pleasure.In the early and middle of the Qing Dynasty,the three hills and five gardens were constructed,teahouses,restaurants,assembly halls,temple fairs,landscape spots developed well,commercial theater began to appear.Because of the policy of dividing-rule for Han town and Man town,the western area of the outer city located in the forefront of the districts of Beijing in all kinds of leisure sites building.At the end of Qing Dynasty,Beijing opera formed,while gardens and other leisure sites were destroyed by foreign invaders.However,From the Sino-Japanese naval battle to the collapse of the Qing Dynasty,Beijing went into the development stage of absorbing western leisure culture.The park and Beijing Zoo were opened as public leisure space,which became an important historical events in the leisure development history of Beijing.

Abstract:Zhifang waijiis the first work that systematically expounded the world human geography after Matteo Ricci' world maps.During compiling Zhifang waiji,Giulios Aleni knitted two clues of world image and overseas seeking novelty.Based on the description of strange people, miracle and strange affairs, he introduced a lot of fantastic stories to China with the customs of novelty-seeking in the late Ming Dynasty.In the cultural contacts between the East and the West,these world images had broadened the horizons of Chinese,opened up the world prospects of the Nature and human wonders,helped Chinese to understand a foreign land culture,and formed the earliest sense of the world.

Abstract:This paper analyses the genesis and genre of «On the Diversity of the World» by the Venetian merchant Marco Polo, who embarked on a journey to the East in the late 13th to early 14th century and subsequently dictated his memoirs to the Pisan writer Rustichello in a Genoese prison. A brief overview of the manuscripts and translations of the book is provided, along with general information about the language of the lost original. The article addresses the question of whether this work can be considered a medieval travelogue or travel diary. The distinctive features of a travelogue — the motif of movement; the description of new spaces and the traveler’s adventures and experiences; the designation of the journey’s goal; and the confirmation of the narrative’s authenticity — are systematically examined in relation to the book. The description of new spaces is fully present in Marco Polo’s account, which presents a kaleidoscopic and extraordinarily picturesque depiction of a world unknown to Europeans. Marco Polo strives to encompass as much information as possible about the new lands he visits, resembling the authors of medieval summae. The other criteria are only partially present, sometimes in a distorted form. However, in the book it is possible to discern the genre characteristics of geographical/ethnographic descriptions of lands, chivalric romances, books of wonders, commercial handbooks, and summae. Thus, «On the Diversity of the World» represents a unique synthesis of different genres, which, among other things, contributed to its enduring success among contemporaries and later generations.

Abstract:Abstract: By analyzing two similar but different prophecies respectively preserved in Marco Polo’s travelogue and Chinese writings, this article seeks to shed light on the mechanism of information circulation and preservation in Mongol Eurasia. It shows that the prophecy in Marco Polo’s book was compatible with European imagination of the Mongols during the thirteenth century while the prophecy in Chinese sources was consistent with Chinese understanding of the Mongols in this time. It argues that during the Mongol period historical information compatible with authors’ repertoires of knowledge and with target audiences’ understanding were more likely preserved in written texts.

Abstract:LIJIANG City sits where the Yunnan-Guizhou and Qinghai-Tibet Plateaus converge in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The Old Town of Lijiang, a listed world cultural heritage site, has 900 years of history preserved along its narrow streets. To me, though this was not my first visit, Lijiang and its environs are shrouded in mystery. More than just an ancient city with winding alleyways and old houses, its unique customs and legends fill outsiders with fascination. The locals still enjoy the old ways of living and thinking. To the north, high hills rise up above the fields towards Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the holy incarnation of the local Naxi people’s patron god. Returning to Lijiang, I found that still holds the same ease and grace, and time here seems frozen.

Abstract:China has long and rich traditions of life writing that run from its earliest historical records to the contemporary blogosphere. Biography was, for centuries, a central strand in historical writing, and this official, public life narration co-existed with ‘social’ biographies, necrologies, hagiographies, diaries, poetry, letters, essays and other genres that contained a wealth of reflection on character, experience, identity and the life course. These were preserved in personal collections, exchanged to cement friendships and social alliances, published to promote or challenge hegemonic values, or to enhance individual or communal reputations. China scholars have drawn on this work to supplement or interrogate the orthodox historical record and have mined life narrative for insights into shifting representations of ideas or practices, into generic conventions, and into changing modes of s elf-re presentation and identity formation.1

Abstract:In the history of western sinology and translation of Chinese literature during the 20 th Century,Arthur Waley( 1889—1966) has been a legendary figure. Despite his love for Chinese history and culture,the immensity of translation works,and his reputation in the English-speaking world,he had never been to China. His understanding of China was mainly acquired from reading,a country that existed in texts and history,an ancient country filled with imagination and construction. Thanks to Waleyu0027s profession and reputation,he had frequent contacts with Chinese intellectuals who were visiting or living in the UK. These Chinese intellectuals were from the elite class of their times who were considered as outstanding figures of China,so to Waley,they represented the living China,serving as symbols of the actual China. Communication with these Chinese intellectuals allowed Waley to have certain direct contact with the actual China,and contributed positively to Waleyu0027s close experience of Chinese culture,studies on Chinese history and culture,and his translation project of Chinese poetry and fiction.
