Abstract:LIJIANG City sits where the Yunnan-Guizhou and Qinghai-Tibet Plateaus converge in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The Old Town of Lijiang, a listed world cultural heritage site, has 900 years of history preserved along its narrow streets. To me, though this was not my first visit, Lijiang and its environs are shrouded in mystery. More than just an ancient city with winding alleyways and old houses, its unique customs and legends fill outsiders with fascination. The locals still enjoy the old ways of living and thinking. To the north, high hills rise up above the fields towards Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the holy incarnation of the local Naxi people’s patron god. Returning to Lijiang, I found that still holds the same ease and grace, and time here seems frozen.

Abstract:As the core territory for the Zhou and Qin dynasties, the land at the foot of Mount Qishan in Shaanxi Province has significantly made the society and culture of China thrive and grow. The author retraced four routes to find out how the Zhou and Qin people explored and envisioned this landscape, both physically as settlements and spiritually as a wonderland. These routes include the migration path of the Zhou people from the north to the south of Mount Qishan to seek shelter from nomadic tribes; the path of the Zhou people moving from the west to the east along the Weihe River to conquer the Shang people and establish a new kingdom; the path of the Qin State to unify the other six states and found a great dynasty; and the route climbing from the Weihe Valley to Mount Taibai, the main peak of the Qinling Mountains. All the episodes happened on these routes had a profound influence on the ideology of Chinese society and cultural identity. For instance, the Zhou people's observation on the landscape for farming and living, as well as their preference for the basin-shaped territory, significantly contributed to forming the Chinese geomancy (Feng Shui) and developed into an ideal territorial image of being the "kingdom in the center" (literally meaning "China" in Chinese); the artistic representation of sublime reflected the Qin people's fight for survival and honor; and the described Kunlun Wonderland perfectly expresses both religious ideals and worldly desires.

Abstract:Postcolonial Macau is keen to celebrate its colonial legacy to preserve its cultural distinctiveness. This study explores the reordering of a Portuguese colonial site, the Village of Our Lady in Ka Ho, into an architectural heritage in the broader postcolonial context. Employing the Foucauldian concept of 'other spaces', specifically 'utopia' and 'heterotopia', the study argues for the heterotopic nature of heritage. It identifies the discourses and material representations of heritage, their construction and their mirroring of mainstream social ideals. Heritage as heterotopia is a conceptual entity that informs and is realised with material objects. The discourse takes heritage spaces as mediums for performances through symbolic loading on material objects to demonstrate the space's otherness. In addition, colonial nostalgia emerges as a dominant narrative in shaping urban identity. The primary proposition of this research is that heritage is made through othering, and the otherness of heritage is presented through performing. Heritage‐making transforms the site from a 'heterotopia of deviation' to a 'heterotopia of performance', which reveals the societal transition from early modernity that advocates for scientific knowledge to postmodernity that embraces neoliberalism, and then to the arriving era of post‐postmodernity based on performatism.

Abstract:The authors apply the concept of “territory”, “place” and “route ” to analyze the spatial structure of Lijiang City, a famous Chinese historical city of Naxi minority, which was listed as one of the World Heritage cities in 1997. The spatial structure of Lijiang City has a character of duality. Spiritua l territory and living territory, festal place and routine place, man-made rou te and natural route, all exist simultaneously as twin-spaces. The li ving space of Lijiang City becomes a spatial complex of various elements. In th is spatial complex, the daily places are ritualized and bear various cult ural meanings through the interaction of multiple elements at different levels, a nd the seemingly trivial place exhibit dramatic cultural sceneries. The ritualiz ed space is therefore one of the most attractive “cultural landscapes” in Chin ese historical cities, which demands more conservational consideration.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine nuances in ways of seeing and understanding the World Heritage listed West Lake Cultural Landscape, Hangzhou China, through different eyes. The paper briefly introduces the current debate on claimed differences and convergences between Western and Eastern mind sets in heritage conservation and then moves into reviewing the human side of landscape. We then examine the perspectives of international heritage agencies such as UNESCO and ICOMOS and those of Chinese counterparts involved in the nomination and assessment process of West Lake for World Heritage Listing in 2011, and then review the perceptions of Chinese tourists. Underlying the inquiry are two fundamental questions. First, to what extent do international agencies understand the meaning of cultural landscape in a Chinese context? Second, what do Chinese tourists feel about a nationally renowned Chinese example of a cultural landscape in the international spotlight?

Abstract:In heritage movement and tourism development, places are reconstructed in the contest between different forces for heritage attribution and representation. Since the ‘Kaiping Diaolou and Villages’ were successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List, the development of Kaiping as a heritage site has triggered much discussion. This study considers how ‘Diaolou Country,’ as signified by the Diaolou, has been built up as a new image of Kaiping. The study uses various methods including a literature review, observation and interviews to analyze the process of place construction in Kaiping in the context of heritage tourism, with a focus on the subjective feelings of residents. It finds that with the top-down push of the government, the Diaolou has been compulsorily established as a highly symbolized local token; however, the heritage movement as a government decision has received no response from folk forces, which to some extent goes against the original intention of place identification of local groups and fails to fully represent local cultural connotations. Tourism continually consumes the symbol, yet expands the blind zone out of the symbol, and in the pattern of sightseeing, the Diaolou has been shaped as a tourism landscape. As a hollow place, the Diaolou Country can accommodate outside ideas more easily. This study also argues that the in-depth role of heritage as a medium in place construction should give full play to the potential suggested by the background of heritage tourism development. Furthermore, the close ties between heritage and local groups should be valued.

Abstract:Since Xianyang,the capital of Qin Dynasty,was renamed Xincheng in the first year of the reign of Emperor Gao,the former name does not exist any more.Xianyang cauldrons excavated in Guyuan,Ningxia and Shenmu,Shanxi and one square cauldron collected in Zhen Qin Zhai in Macao are all bronze vessels of Western Han,but the place-name Xianyang recorded in these inscriptions is a county of Yunzhong Prefecture,which is located around Togtoh County,about 30 miles away from present Huhhot in the southwest.

Abstract:Lingyin Temple is one of the most famous Buddhist monasteries in the West Lake scenic area in Hangzhou.Its significance in the history of Buddhism in Zhejiang Province and in the tourist industry of Hangzhou is increasing daily.Nevertheless the Chinese historical record of its ups and downs in late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period is not complete.This article tries to find clues in Western resources and restore the true reality of this Buddhist monastery in the early 20th century and our historical memory of it.The focus of attention in this article is respectively the main entrance to this monastery and the change in the representation of Sakyamuni or Gotama,the founder of Buddhism,in the main hall of this monastery.

Abstract:Reconciliation of the often conflicting processes of urban conservation and urbanisation has been of academic and professional interest. The 2011 UNESCO recommendation on the historic urban landscape has provided guidelines for heritage management, but the ambiguities about its theoretical and practical bases have undermined its wider application in diverse urban contexts. The designation of Pingyao as one of the first urban World Heritage Sites in China in 1997 has stimulated tourism, and exemplified further challenges. An urban morphological investigation of Pingyao reveals the historical expressiveness, or historicity of its urban landscape forms as both spatial-temporal and representational creations. The historic urban landscape approach embodying both integrative and morphological values is fundamental to the formulation of historically-sensitive and community-based urban development and conservation plans. To achieve sustainable management of urban changes, integration of such historic urban landscape strategy into the established planning system is needed at both national and local levels.

Abstract:After War II, especially after the 1960s and 1970s, the world heritage movement flourished worldwide. What attitude a nation holds toward the natural and cultural heritage reflects the standard of this nation's civilization. Since its first being introduced to China, the concept of world heritage and its deep meanings began to be understood gradually. China's acceding to the World Heritage Convention means challenges to the existing system in China. The author emphasizes that our concept of heritage should go beyond the existing cultural relics and scenic or famous spots, go beyond the dead and isolated places or patches to extend toward connected living landscapes and integrated routes and systems, and go beyond the imperial grandeur and extend into the cultural landscapes that represent the relationship between this unique land and people.

Abstract:WU-YUE①(Five Mountains,referring to the Five Sacred Mountains in China),the general term for five Historic Mountains including Mt.Tai in the east,Mt.Heng in the south,Mt.Hua in the west,Mt.Heng in the north and Mt Song in the center of China,was the core area of dynasties' territory in China,the site for the emperor who unified the territories to inspect locals and to offer sacrifices to heaven & earth,the place merging different religions over the world,the common memory for national history and culture by Chinese nationality,and the sacred mountain group with high-quality of Chinese history & culture.There are plentiful historical documents about the WU-YUE,such as papers,poets and Chinese traditional paintings,etc.,which recorded the long historical changes in culture and tradition of WU-YUE areas.Based on the analysis of historical changes of WU-YUE's names,their locations,and the characteristics of the cultures and religions of WU-XING,this paper discusses the outstanding universal values of WU-YUE from the perspective of World Heritage.Besides,the paper argues that,as the most sacred mountain group in China,WU-YUE have the great significance in China's unification and mergence of different religions in China.The outstanding universal values of these five mountains include the model of harmony between human & nature,exhibition of ancient science & technology,contribution to communication between China and foreign countries,picturesque natural landscape,record of geological evolution,as well as homeland for rare & precious plants.The authors argue that it would be of significance to exhibit Chinese culture to the World,if WU-YUE,as one of the highest quality of Sacred Mountains Group over the World,could be inscribed into the list of World Heritage by UNESCO.

Abstract:Purpose: Being culturally rich and historically significant, China is seeing a growth in heritage and cultural tourism. From being seen as a country with a singular national identity, local communities are increasingly marketing their local heritage and culture for heritage tourism. Theoretical framework: These activities include the generation of money and the facilitation of the development of infrastructure. The advantages are mutually beneficial; for example, travelers report feeling psychologically better after participating in heritage tourism activities because they are motivated by feelings of nostalgia and a sense of cultural connection. Design/methodology/approach: In this regard, authenticity becomes a state driven effort, where values in communities are expected to change as needed. For example, in Lijiang the local Dongba religious rituals which had been included into the UNESCO Memory of the World Register had been reinvented to be more suited for tourist consumption. Findings: These activities include the generation of money and the facilitation of the development of infrastructure. The advantages are mutually beneficial; for example, travelers report feeling psychologically better after participating in heritage tourism activities because they are motivated by feelings of nostalgia and a sense of cultural connection. Despite this, the advantages come with certain negatives, which manifest themselves as physical and cultural harms that are incurred as a result of the situation. Research, Practical & Social implications: To begin, it paves the way for specific historic places to become a ritualized channel via which collective social memory may be conveyed and gathered together. To elaborate, heritage tourism enables a person to validate their membership in a nation based on the imagined reality that has been established through the course of their history. Originality/value: Mentioned three perspectives in authenticity in China, namely spatial separation, value shifting and emotional banishment. In this regard, authenticity becomes a state driven effort, where values in communities are expected to change as needed.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the overall impacts of the World Heritage List (WHL) inscription in China from different socioeconomic aspects. Kaiping Diaolou and Villages was chosen as the case study because the long period of preparation for WHL inscription led to residents’ deep understanding of its heritage values. Results are as follows. (1) Cultural cognition, sense of belonging, community cohesion and infrastructure were positively improved by the WHL inscription, whereas damage to the community cultural environment slightly increased. (2) In the economic domain, the WHL inscription had generated positive (increase in tourism development and villagers’ income and employment and solution to the Diaolou property rights problem) and negative impacts (worse tourism development, unequal income and unsolved property rights problems). (3) The WHL inscription improved the ecological environment and people’s attention to environmental protection. Although it also caused environmental damage due to an increase in tourists. (4) The positive impacts on the political domain were reflected by government leadership, community participation and plan and legislation, whereas the negative impacts included limited community participation and insufficient planning. Innovations of this study include constructing a theoretical framework to evaluate the impacts of WHL inscription, analysing the present factors of WHL inscription’s impacts and providing development suggestions.

Abstract:Hangzhou has always been regarded as the paradise on earth by many westerners between the end of 13th century when Marco Polo declared it to be the most noble and graceful city in the world and the mid 20th century.By the end of the Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty,large numbers of missionaries,merchants,diplomats,scholars and painters came to Hangzhou to describe in words and painting the landscape,mansions and folklore of the city.This paper mainly focuses on the six western painters that depicted the West Lake between the beginning of the 18th century and the beginning of 20th century.By referring to their paintings unfamiliar to the audience in Hangzhou,we intend to retrospect and examine Hangzhou in history with the hope of re-examining and advancing the bid for cultural heritage of West Lake at UNESCO.

Abstract:Abstract The Shishuo xinyu 世說新語 (A New Account of Tales of the World) is a collection of anecdotes concerning extraordinary historical figures active in the second through fourth centuries. This article highlights and explores the importance of the Shishuo xinyu as cultural memory. In the collection, the public display and use of personal memory of the cultural past are taken as means to preserve cultural legacy, construct cultural identity, and establish cultural authority in the elite literati community. Cultural memory gained much significance after the migration of the Western Jin 西晉 (265–316) royal house and aristocratic families to the south after its fall. On one hand, shared memory and the sharing of memory of the past created an unbroken chain of cultural legacy and secured the elite literati's cultural identities in a “continuous” tradition; on the other hand, personal memory and the monopoly of memory were crucial tools to claim cultural privilege in the highly competitive community of elite literati. The peculiar nature of the anecdote as a cross between private and public matters, as well as between local and universal knowledge, lends itself perfectly to carrying out the various social functions of cultural memory. The attention to cultural memory in the Shishuo xinyu was not an accidental or isolated phenomenon. Its sentimental and personal approach to the past reflects the prevailing cultural nostalgia in writings by elite literati of the fourth and fifth centuries.
