West Lake Sentiment from across the Atlantic Ocean——An exploration of six western painters that depicted the West Lake at the end of Qing Dynasty

Abstract:Hangzhou has always been regarded as the paradise on earth by many westerners between the end of 13th century when Marco Polo declared it to be the most noble and graceful city in the world and the mid 20th century.By the end of the Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty,large numbers of missionaries,merchants,diplomats,scholars and painters came to Hangzhou to describe in words and painting the landscape,mansions and folklore of the city.This paper mainly focuses on the six western painters that depicted the West Lake between the beginning of the 18th century and the beginning of 20th century.By referring to their paintings unfamiliar to the audience in Hangzhou,we intend to retrospect and examine Hangzhou in history with the hope of re-examining and advancing the bid for cultural heritage of West Lake at UNESCO.
