Tracing the History of the West Lake

Abstract:Hangzhou West Lake got its name from the location——west to old urban areas of Hangzhou,Zhejiang province. During four hundred years after the formation of the lake,Qiantang County saw uninterrupted growth and expansion.In the 6th century,Hangzhou came into being.As the terminus of Jiangnan Grand Canal which was built in Sui dynasty,Hangzhou turned into a commercial city with rapid development.The name of "The West Lake" might be dated back to the Sui Dynasty,and was frequently used in the Tang Dynasty,when Hangzhou began to grow rapidly.Up to Tang dynasty,the West Lake became an integral part of Hangzhou after Li Mi drilled the Six Wells and diverted water from the West Lake to thousands of families.Meanwhile,the continuous growth of Hangzhou city effectively protected the soil from swamping and ensured the continued existence of the West Lake. From a large bay to a lagoon,the West Lake,with its dredging and deposition,finally became a scenic lake.The way it came into existence is a history of protection and control in which Chinese traditional landscape culture is deeply rooted,reflecting the continuity the West Lake history and culture.
