Abstract:This paper investigates ways of knowing a particular place in landscape architectural practice across cultures. The approach of landscape architecture to place suggests a primary goal to look after places’ characteristics. Therefore, landscape architects have developed ways to gain understanding of place and its natural and cultural environment. A case study of the planning and design of the Li Lake area in China where Australian landscape architects played key roles showed their genuine engagement with place through intensive site investigations and close interaction with local governmental clients. It also showed their difficulties in gaining implicit knowledge of this area, because their early and direct interaction with local landscape architects and communities was restricted by the commissioning process.
Changing Attitudes of Beijingness to Westernized Place Names in Beijing: From the Semi-Colonial Period to Postmodern Twenty-First Century

Abstract:One of the goals of China’s place name governance, which started in 2015, is to remove westernized place names. This study investigates what westernized place names are not suitable for a city in China. It uses Beijing as an example to analyze the westernized place names of Beijing in three periods against the prevailing social background. The first period is from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the early years of the Republic of China. The second period is from 1949 to 1980 which started with the foundation of People’s Republic of China to the early years of China beginning to open up. The third period is from 1980 to 2019. In addressing this topic both the government and the mass media have asked major questions for study by toponymic scholars. Two major conclusions are provided. First, Beijingness knew the symbolic meaning of place names in the first period and actively used place naming and renaming to reflect the prevailing ideological viewpoint of society. In the last period real estate developers started to commercialize the cultural capital of westernized place names. Second, after three periods of examining westernized place names, the attitudes of Beijingness toward westernized place names reflect balances between the old and new, the local and global, and a positioning and spiritual function. This discussion advances thinking about the administrative management of the westernized place names in Beijing and even in China, that is, acknowledging that the laws and regulations on place names need to be coordinated with existing laws and regulations, including those addressing property rights.

Abstract:With the introduction of humanist and Marxist philosophies, we have witnessed a trend moving from empirical examination to theoretical discussions in historical geography. In comparison with the great developments of these theoretical perspectives, the research methods regarding how to collect and analyze data to support theories have still remained grounded in traditional notions. With the rise of historical GIS, research methods have rapidly developed from the textural to the visual, from case studies to spatial analysis on maps, and from methods separated into quantitative and qualitative to integrated methods. Although historical GIS is being used to provide new insights into geographical change over time, the changing of place names has received relatively little attention. To study changing regional names throughout Beijing’s history, I provide a new systematic classification of place names. Place names can be classified into three intertwined parts: objects and numbers (scientific/practical ways of naming), histories and emotions (humanistic ways of naming), and politics and ideologies (social constructionist ways of naming). Through spatial analysis of these groups of names, we can see that the ways of naming the regions in Beijing has been transformed from the humanistic and practical ways during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), to the social constructionist ways during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), and then to the scientific ways during the Republic of China (1912–1949).

Abstract:Place and street names, although apparently an apolitical part of everyday life, are in fact often determined by the state for political ends. In the democratic West, the political aspect of street names is most often revealed in the controversy that can accompany name changes, but authoritarian states often put politics front and center. China, for example, has passed national legislation that restricts street and place names to those that support “national unity and the establishment of socialist modernization,” while prohibiting those that “damage sovereignty or national dignity.” Using a unique dataset of 4.8 million Chinese street names, in this paper I analyze the factors that are associated with unity-promoting names across 122 major Chinese cities. Quantitative analysis and historical data suggest that the central government is most concerned with promoting “correct” names in areas with high ethnic tension or large numbers of ethnic minorities. These results suggest that Beijing sees geographic naming as an important promoter of national unity.

Abstract:Place names refract historical memories of regional communities. They not only function as makers of places, but also contain implicit references to groups of people, business or commerce, conflicts between families, folk beliefs, as well as national policies. By tracing back to the changes of place names in history, we can disclose the social and geographical backdrop of a place and observe the choices of historical memories by different groups of people. By drawing on folk literature in Huizhou, this paper presents an initial exploration of the social and geographical backdrop for changes of place names in history, so as to reveal the elegant features of place names in Huizhou and the social and cultural implications hidden behind the elegant names of places.

Abstract:Research on sense of place has implication on the protection of historical sites.This essay focuses on residents' sense of place in Beijing's historical sites and analyzes residents' perception and evaluation.Through the literature review,this essay concludes the definition and factors of sense of place and constructs the model of residents' sense of place by depth interview.Under the framework of measuring system,this essay conducts a questionnaire,on a sample pool of 506 residents to investigate the residents' sense of place in 26 residents' sites in Beijing.In conclusion,this essay analyzes the cognitive variables and the scores of the factors of sense of place.Meanwhile,it compares the differences of sense of place between different types of Beijing historical sites.

Abstract:Toponym is rich in cultural connotations, which can help human beings understand the economy, culture, geography, religion of a certain region and a certain stage. With the increasing intercultural communication, cultural exchange has been extended to people's work and life and the significance and influence of toponym in cross-cultural communication has been gradually highlighted. This paper compares the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western place name from three aspects. Due to the unity of human thought, there are similarities between Chinese and Western place names. But because of the great cultural differences between China and the West, there are also great differences in the place names. Chinese place name is more deliberate and rigorous while western people treat place name only as an accusative symbol and the naming of it is more casual and flexible. Therefore, the study of place name can provide insight into the characteristics of Chinese and Western cultures which is important for the promotion of cultural exchange. The article also considers the prospect of using information computer technologies for processing wide layers of toponymic material.

Abstract:This paper presents research on the dynamic relationship between linguistic landscape and place-making. Through the lens of tourism, it scrutinises the language on public transport signs, billboards, street names, shop names and commercial posters, as well as public signs of government agencies, on Wailingding Island off China's southern coast. Its purpose is to explore the question of to what extent and with what characteristics place meaning 'translates' into the linguistic landscape. A predominantly qualitative approach is employed. The research finds that the text content of the linguistic landscape is fundamental to making a meaningful place. Its cultural connotation is related to the social environment, manifesting deeper the meaning of a place beyond the displayed content. Nonetheless, the symbolical meaning of the linguistic landscape is fluid, with the subjective consciousness of the creative subject and the cognition, perception and understanding of the linguistic landscape by different agents of interest.

Abstract:In the process of globalization and urbanization,villagesu0027 culture is being in danger,sa there is special significance to study the development of Beijing villages. We picked out 5,599 toponyms of villages in Beijing,and using GIS to study their temporal- spatial distribution. The study found that the trends of development were different between the amount of toponyms and the population growth. The geographical path of toponyms was following piedmont phreatic overflows zones- roads- plains- mountainous regions. Toponyms named for Cunzhuangying,Liangling and Shuiqiao accounted for 68% of the total amount,which show the landform pattern of Beijing. And the other 32% toponyms show the Beijing cultural characteristics.

Abstract:Calligraphic landscape was defined as a portion of geographical space with a specific visual characteristics and special sense of place resulting from the laying-out of the assemblies of calligraphy as landscape elements.As Chinese calligraphy is at the center of the core of Chinese culture,calligraphic landscape was the typical traditional Chinese culture landscape and an important part of urban cultural landscape.On the basis of different characters of calligraphic landscape,this paper developed an index of calligraphic landscape to measure the spatial differentiation of calligraphic landscape.19 surveys of calligraphic landscape were done to detect the spatial differentiation.Survey areas included cities and towns in regions such as Beijing,Sichuan,Jiangsu and Hong Kong.The statistical results of calligraphic landscape showed an obvious spatial differentiation phenomenon.Spatial differentiation not only existed among the cities and towns with different cultural attributes and functional attributes,but also existed between the peripheral zone and the core zone within the same cultural or business block.The important factor affecting this spatial differentiation of calligraphic landscape was subconscious cognitive and cultural identity to calligraphy of shopkeepers.The spatial agglomeration of different shops forced by the pursuit of the agglomeration benefits was another important factor.The fact that Chinese people consider calligraphy as a symbol of landscape and culture in subconsciousness have made calligraphic landscape have functions of space delineation and definition,which may contribute to the formation of cultural symbolic space of cities and towns.Research of calligraphic landscape has practical meanings to the protection of traditional Chinese cultural landscape in the process of globalization and urbanization.

Abstract:For thousands of years, Lanzhou city has long history and bright culture, and has numerous historic buildings and cultural relics. But with the rapid development of the city, many cultural heritages had been destroyed. The cities appearance are becoming more and more similar, urban culture roots has not clear, the city began to become unfamiliar. The reason is the local residents have a lack of cultural identity to living environment. City square, as a major public urban space. By a sense of spiritual civilization, it should be a window of the city and essential building space to daily life of local residents; it also bears an important responsibility which is heritage city in cultural context. Based on the Yellow River in Lanzhou City, and the study of the new square design concept, analyzed and summarized, presented the concept of square design to create a historical and cultural context of urban culture, the importance of heritage and modern artistic expression should be united with urban history and culture diversity, to make people re-establish the cultural identity for the city to gain ownership in their spirit.
