From three respects the hierarchy of MAN, the technologies used in the backbone layer, aggregation layer and access layer of MAN, and the future trends of MAN are presented. And it is described that the optical network based on DWDM is the future of broadband MAN.

Abstract:After conquering the core and metropolitan networks, fiber is now penetrating into the access domain. Its low loss and huge bandwidth enable the delivery of any current and foreseeable set of broadband services, and also make it a nice match to the wireless link to the end user. Cost effectiveness is a key issue, and will be decisive for the network topology choices. Point-to-point may be the most cost-effective for short-reach access, whereas point-to-multipoint may be the most interesting at medium- to long-reach access, or when line terminations in the local exchange become a key issue. A number of optical techniques being deployed for shared-fiber multiple access are discussed, based on time slot multiplexing, frequency slot multiplexing, code division multiplexing, and wavelength multiplexing, including their application in fiber to the home/fiber to the premises (FTTH/FTTP) networks for fast data transfer (asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) or Ethernet based) and for broadband service distribution (such as CATV). In the research laboratories, techniques aiming at next-generation optical access are being studied, such as wavelength routing for flexible capacity allocation and easily adaptable hosting of services and service providers, and radio-over-fiber techniques creating a powerful symbiosis of the fiber world and the wireless world by enabling centralized radio signal processing

Abstract:This article provides a brief overview of the evolution and emerging trends of passive optical networks (PONs). Early standardized time division multiplexed (TDM) PONs, namely the Broadband PON (BPON), Gigabit PON (GPON), and Gigabit Ethernet PON (GE-PON), are first reviewed and compared. A discussion on standardized 10 G-PON including IUT-T next-generation PON stage-1 (NG-PON1) also commonly referred to as XG-PON and IEEE 10 Gigabit Ethernet PON (10GE-PON) is then presented. Abstract:With the data service exploding, it gives increasing demand on network broadband, Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) is introduced into the communication networks, which can solve the broadband problem. This paper presents a novel technology to construct the hybrid model architecture for WDM systems. In order to improve network efficiency and decrease network cost, the different network model should be connected for each other, so, how to realize the connection of the different network model is the hotspot of the research work on optical network. The recent development in WDM technology has led to a significant increase in the available transmission capacity in wide area networks. These networks are no longer limited by transmission bandwidth, but rather by the processing capability of electronic switches, routers, and multiplexers in the network. The hybrid connection methods have four types with Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) signaling. Simulation to the hybrid model is also studied. The results indicate the novel scheme is an effective method.

Abstract:Fiber optic rings are widely deployed in metropolitan area networks (MAN). These rings currently employ architectures and protocols that are neither optimized for nor scalable to the network demand. Therefore, emerging technologies are being pushed to replace the traditional architectures. Among these technologies, optical burst switching (OBS) is an effective and promising technology. In this study, a novel architecture, dual-fiber OBS (DOBS), is proposed. This architecture has similar functions to those of fiber delay lines, partial wavelength conversion and deflection routing. A theoretical model is developed to evaluate the performance of DOBS, which is compared with single-fiber and simple two-fiber schemes by introducing them into ring and mesh MAN in simulations. The results reveal that DOBS can exponentially reduce the burst dropping probability. Moreover, since DOBS can be implement using commercially available devices and dark fibers, it is commercially viable in metro networks.

Abstract:The combination of broadband optical access and core networks is considered to be one of the most promising solutions for end-to-end transportation of high bit-rate data, video, and voice signals across optical networks of the future. Optical label switching technology (OLS) is an important aspect of optical packet switching and it involves the extraction and processing of the labels so that the packets can be routed to their destinations. OLS enables the routing and forwarding of the ultra-high bit rate payloads from source to destination entirely in the optical domain, thus alleviating the need for expensive optical-to-electrical conversions for processing. We have developed key enabling technologies for merged core and access networks including optical label generation, label swapping, optical buffering, clock recovery and wavelength conversion. We have experimentally demonstrated that these enabling techniques that can provide efficient broadband services in the future access and core networks.

Abstract:In metropolitan area networks (MANs), fiber optic rings are widely deployed. These rings are currently using architectures that are neither optimized nor scalable to the network demands. In this paper, a new architecture, called dual-fiber-link OBS and a related media access control protocol, are proposed for MANs. The proposed architecture, which uses dual-fiber link to ease burst contention, has the similar functions of fiber delay lines, partial wavelength conversion, and deflection routing. A theoretical model is developed for evaluating the performance of the proposed architecture. Furthermore, the dual-fiber-link is compared with the single-fiber link and the simple two-fiber link schemes by introduced them into ring and mesh MANs through simulations. Both analysis and simulation results show that the DFL OBS MANs is feasible for carrying out with existing commercial devices and available dark fibers. It is commercially viable in that the DFL can exponentially decrease the burst dropping probability in the ring and mesh MANs.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new access networks concept: wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks. We emphasize the superiority of its architecture and analyze two special technologies adopted by recent WDMPON architecture: optical source sharing and spectral slicing. In the end, we indicate that WDMPON is the best candidate for future broadband network. It will offer important reference for telecommunication carriers to consider the best choice for the future OAN.

In this paper,we discuss the architecture of a wireless backhaul based on PON. In such a network,the optical line terminal is placed in a central office and connects with the wireless core network. Abstract:At present, inter network connection of wireless networks and Internet is one of research hotspots. In this paper, we simply introduce a broadband wireless IP network based on W CDMA technology and its topology structure. Protocol and function of a wireless IP sub layer are defined. Design and implementation of the wireless IP sub layer in wireless terminal and Internet connecting server are described in detail. A wireless TCP connection and a adaptive wireless congestion control are completed. Experiment result has shown that any wireless terminal can access Internet efficiently using Ping, IE, FTP, Email, Telnet and so on.

Abstract:In this paper, a new class of optical multistage interconnection network (MIN) architecture is presented, which is constructed utilizing a modularization approach rather than the traditional recursive or fixed exchange pattern methods. The modified architecture consists of an input module, an output module, two point-to-point (PTP) modules, and one modified multicast/broadcast (M/B) module(s). We also implement the multicast/broadcast module with WDM technique, which reduces the hardware cost required for multicast and the re-computation cost for a new connection. We show that it has the best application flexibility and provides multicast function without imposing significant negative impacts on the whole network. A new multicast connection pattern is also proposed in this paper, which makes it practical and economical to apply amplification in space-division networks. Compared with existing multicast architectures, this new architecture with Dilated Benes PTP modules has better performance in terms of system SNR, the number of switch elements, and system attenuation in point-to-point connections. Moreover, the multicast/broadcast module adopts wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique to increase its multicast/broadcast assignment. As a result, given m available distinguished wavelengths, one M/B module can support at most m M/B requests at the same time. The new proposed M/B module with WDM is more practical and economical to apply amplification in space-division networks.
