Abstract:Fiber optic rings are widely deployed in metropolitan area networks (MAN). These rings currently employ architectures and protocols that are neither optimized for nor scalable to the network demand. Therefore, emerging technologies are being pushed to replace the traditional architectures. Among these technologies, optical burst switching (OBS) is an effective and promising technology. In this study, a novel architecture, dual-fiber OBS (DOBS), is proposed. This architecture has similar functions to those of fiber delay lines, partial wavelength conversion and deflection routing. A theoretical model is developed to evaluate the performance of DOBS, which is compared with single-fiber and simple two-fiber schemes by introducing them into ring and mesh MAN in simulations. The results reveal that DOBS can exponentially reduce the burst dropping probability. Moreover, since DOBS can be implement using commercially available devices and dark fibers, it is commercially viable in metro networks.

Abstract:In metropolitan area networks (MANs), fiber optic rings are widely deployed. These rings are currently using architectures that are neither optimized nor scalable to the network demands. Therefore, some emerging technologies are being pushed to replace the traditional architecture. Optical burst switching (OBS) is an effective and promising optical switching technology among these emerging technologies. In this paper, a new architecture, called dual-fiber-link OBS and a related media access control protocol, are proposed for MANs. The proposed architecture, which uses dual-fiber link to ease burst contention, has the similar functions of fiber delay lines, partial wavelength conversion, and deflection routing. A theoretical model is developed for evaluating the performance of the proposed architecture. Furthermore, the dual-fiber-link is compared with the single-fiber link and the simple two-fiber link schemes by introduced them into ring and mesh MANs through simulations. Both analysis and simulation results show that the DFL OBS MANs is feasible for carrying out with existing commercial devices and available dark fibers. It is commercially viable in that the DFL can exponentially decrease the burst dropping probability in the ring and mesh MANs.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is proposed as a high speed, flexible and transparent switching technology. It facilitates the efficient integration of both IP and WDM. And it provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of OBS networks is mainly hampered at the network nodes by resource contention. Due to the fact that the random access memory is not available in the optical domain, there exists a real possibility that bursts may contend with one another at a switching node. Therefore, many contention resolutions are proposed, such as fiber delay lines, wavelength conversion, and deflection routing, etc. These resolutions are focus on the node design. They are increase the complexity of the node. But they can not always take some significant effect and make notable gains in cost-efficiency. In this paper, unlike these schemes are focus on the node design, we proposed a novel link architecture named dual-fiber-link (DFL) for OBS networks. We also proposed a relative media access control protocol. We have developed some scenarios to evaluate this architecture. Simulation results show that the proposed link can decrease packet drop probability in terms of orders of magnitude in OBS networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions.

Abstract:To cope with ever-increasing traffic demands in transport networks, all-optical switching is currently perceived as a solution to remove bottlenecks imposed by O/E/O conversions. Optical label switching accomplishes packet switching using the optical-labels. It simplifies the design of switching devices in the optical domain and speeds up packet forwarding significantly. In this paper, we propose a novel design of optical switches, and present a performance analysis to show its in-depth behavior. The analysis results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed switching architecture.

Abstract:With the data service exploding, it gives increasing demand on network broadband, Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) is introduced into the communication networks, which can solve the broadband problem. This paper presents a novel technology to construct the hybrid model architecture for WDM systems. In order to improve network efficiency and decrease network cost, the different network model should be connected for each other, so, how to realize the connection of the different network model is the hotspot of the research work on optical network. The recent development in WDM technology has led to a significant increase in the available transmission capacity in wide area networks. These networks are no longer limited by transmission bandwidth, but rather by the processing capability of electronic switches, routers, and multiplexers in the network. The hybrid connection methods have four types with Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) signaling. Simulation to the hybrid model is also studied. The results indicate the novel scheme is an effective method.

Abstract:A kind of novel architecture of variable length optical packet switching ring network using wavelength as optical packet label was proposed.The models of optical packet transmitter and receiver are also presented.The multi-token protocol was introduced to avoid optical packets collision in this paper.The characteristics of the node throughput and optical packet time delay were studied through numeric simulation over 4-nodes,8-nodes and 16-nodes ring networks.The result shows that packet delay,node throughput and resource utilization increase with the network load increasing.The more network nodes,the larger network throughput.

Abstract:Under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of optical packet-switched networks is mainly hampered at the network node by resource contention. The contention is serious constraints on the capacity of the network. Therefore, most of the research activities are focus on the node design. Unlike the existing research activities are focus on the node design, we proposed a new concept--server vision for optical packet-switched networks in this paper. From the point of view of server vision, the network resource is categorized into three types---the access server, the node server and the link server, based on the fact that the network resource performs the different function for the traffic. After present the server vision optical network, we presented two novel approaches--two link server solutions-- to erase the resource contention. One solution is the packet calking, and the other solution is the dual-fiber link. We have developed some scenarios to validate these solutions. Simulation results show that the dual-fiber link can reduce the contention in terms of orders of magnitude in optical packetswitched networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions.

Abstract:A novel hybrid WDM/TDM optical access network architecture called wavelength shared WDM PON and its media access control mode is proposed. The system is based on a two-stage distribution tree connecting OLT and ONUs.and uses ALOHA protocol for control channel and FIFO scheduler to efficiently assign bandwidth. The packet delay in the system is analyzed and the numerical results demonstrate that the system possesses well performance of packet delay.

Abstract:A novel modularized twin-ring wavelength division multiplexer access network is proposed in this paper. By originally designing the switch module and the exchange module, the central office and the remote nodes are formed respectively. This gives the network both modularity and scalability. By using twin-ring topology, the architecture of network is constructed. It makes the network not only have high reliability, but also support wavelength tetra-reuse. By simulation, the mentioned functions are demonstrated. The simulating results show the network has good performance.

Abstract:In this paper, a new class of optical multistage interconnection network (MIN) architecture is presented, which is constructed utilizing a modularization approach rather than the traditional recursive or fixed exchange pattern methods. The modified architecture consists of an input module, an output module, two point-to-point (PTP) modules, and one modified multicast/broadcast (M/B) module(s). We also implement the multicast/broadcast module with WDM technique, which reduces the hardware cost required for multicast and the re-computation cost for a new connection. We show that it has the best application flexibility and provides multicast function without imposing significant negative impacts on the whole network. A new multicast connection pattern is also proposed in this paper, which makes it practical and economical to apply amplification in space-division networks. Compared with existing multicast architectures, this new architecture with Dilated Benes PTP modules has better performance in terms of system SNR, the number of switch elements, and system attenuation in point-to-point connections. Moreover, the multicast/broadcast module adopts wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique to increase its multicast/broadcast assignment. As a result, given m available distinguished wavelengths, one M/B module can support at most m M/B requests at the same time. The new proposed M/B module with WDM is more practical and economical to apply amplification in space-division networks.

Abstract:The transmission of IP packets over WDM technology (IP-over-WDM) is expected to be the basic transmission framework of the next generation network. In this paper, a novel architecture of optical network is presented. The optical network control plane is responsible for tracking the network topology and the state of network resources, and for establishing, removing and maintaining connections. These functions can be achieved using two fundamental protocols-the routing protocol for topology and resource discovery, and the signaling protocol for connection provisioning, maintenance and deletion. Additional protocols may also be used within the optical network control plane. By analysis and study of optical Internet architecture, a novel technology to construct the hybrid model architecture for IP over WDM systems is given and tested. The results show that the hybrid model architecture is efficient.

Abstract:The optical network deploying WDM technology efficiently utilizes a single fiber's capacity, thus satisfied the increasing requirement for bandwidth. This paper shows that this kind of network in all-optical form is feasible and practical when applied in metro area, in which transparent transmission can be obtained. For the following section of this paper, we discuss the architecture of the metro all- optical network, and analyze the coordination of protection and restoration schemes between optical and electronic layer. Finally, we show the possible architecture bridging the transparency and the opacity, which is considered to be practical in the near future. And we further present the functional block of the photoelectric component-a novel transponder which is deployed in this architecture.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is thought to be the best way to adapt bursty traffic of IP-based next generation network services. However, there are a lot of challenges to make OBS networking a reality. Of most concern is burst contention avoidance. The major contention avoidance resolutions in literature are wavelength conversion, fiber delay lines, and deflecting routing. They are very vulnerable to network load and may suffer from severe data loss in case of heavy traffic. Even at moderate traffic, contention caused by using these methods lead to burst blocking and data losses. In this article, a novel contention avoidance technique is presented by using the parallel link server (PLS) architecture, which may overcome the lack of information at the edge node and the absence of global coordination among nodes. Using Poisson and Self-Similar traffic arrival models, the proposed mechanism is compared with the traditional single link server architecture through simulation in the 14-node national science foundation network. The numerical results show that this architecture, without additional other methods, can obtain burst blocking and data dropping probabilities with almost two orders of magnitudes less than those in the single link server architecture. Gains are achieved by less than 7% increase in end-to-end delay when carrying coordinated traffic and a load under 0.45.

Abstract:The average link utilization at the backbone of Internet is less than 10%.But the bandwidth that users can experience is very limited. Researchers find the switching capability of metropolitan area networks (MAN) is the major bottleneck. This paper adopts the Multi-path Self-routing Switching Structure as the switching fabric, which is interconnected by multistage sorting concentrators. With its distributing, self-routing, no internal buffer and recursive scalable attributes, a large scale boundary router based on circuit switching mode was built. It takes the IntServ model, uses TCP to setup the connection and RSVP to reserve the bandwidth resource. Theory analysis and simulations show this structure can provides end-to-end delay and jitter guaranteed QoS. © 2009 IEEE.
