Abstract:A dispersion-free scheme for stable multi-access radio frequency dissemination in a fibre loop link is proposed and demonstrated. The phase jitter and dispersion-induced power fading are suppressed simultaneously by transmitting different single-band signals in opposite propagating directions. Experimentally, a 2.5 GHz radio frequency signal is steadily transmitted to different remote sites, with phase deviations less than 0.6 ps over 15,000 s.

Abstract:A duplex radio-over-fiber (RoF) link with a novel scheme to generate 60-GHz millimeter (mm)-wave using 20 GHz double sideband (DSB) optical mm-wave with signal carried only by its optical carrier is investigated. In the RoF downlink, the modulation frequency to generate the DSB optical mm-wave is reduced greatly. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that this scheme cannot only eliminate the code form distortion caused by the time shifting of the sidebands, but also reduce the influence of the fading effect as the DSB optical mm-wave signal is transmitted along the fiber. Based on the scheme, the duplex RoF link with the frequency up- (down-) conversion of the down- (up-) link mm-wave signal is built and the uplink transmission performance is analyzed theoretically.

Abstract:This paper theoretically investigates the signal degradation induced by intersubcarrier interference and frequency-selective fading in orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing radio-over-fiber systems. Turbo codes and bit interleaver technologies are proposed to effectively mitigate unbalanced error distribution because of intersubcarrier interference and frequency-selective fading. Experimental results show that the receiver sensitivities are improved as far as 5 dB after 50-km SMF-28 transmission for 6.25-Gb/s wireless signals on optical generated 60-GHz carrier.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate an optical millimeter-wave and a full-duplex radio-over-fiber system by using one optical modulator was proposed and experimentally demonstrated.A mixer was employad to generate electrical millime-ter-wave,and single-arm electronic-optical modulator to generate double sideband signals.Then an optical interleaver is employed to separate the spectrum of the double-sideband signals.The separated first-order sidband modes were used to generate optical millimeter-wave with double RF frequency,while the separated optical carrier was reused for upstream connection.The experiment results show that the 40GHz optical millimeter-wave will be generated by 20GHz RF re-source,and 2.5Gbit/s downstream and upstream data can be transmitted over 20km in fiber.

Abstract:With the data service exploding, it gives increasing demand on network broadband, Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) is introduced into the communication networks, which can solve the broadband problem. This paper presents a novel technology to construct the hybrid model architecture for WDM systems. In order to improve network efficiency and decrease network cost, the different network model should be connected for each other, so, how to realize the connection of the different network model is the hotspot of the research work on optical network. The recent development in WDM technology has led to a significant increase in the available transmission capacity in wide area networks. These networks are no longer limited by transmission bandwidth, but rather by the processing capability of electronic switches, routers, and multiplexers in the network. The hybrid connection methods have four types with Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) signaling. Simulation to the hybrid model is also studied. The results indicate the novel scheme is an effective method.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel low-cost radio-over-fiber network architecture with one directly modulated laser and one intensity modulator. By employing an orthogonal frequency division mutiplexing modulation format and frequency quadruple scheme, the bandwidth requirement of the devices and the cost of the system is reduced. Experimental results show that the power penalty for the downlink data after transmission over 20-km single mode optical fiber (SMF)-28 is smaller than 1.3 dB, while for the up-link data, the power penalty after transmission over 20-km SMF-28 is smaller than 0.3 dB. Abstract:Based on the seamless integration of broadband optical and wireless access networks, millimeter wave Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology is considered a promising solution for the next generation access networks which will provide high capacity and flexibility with low cost. However, due to its large realization cost, the system architecture needs to be optimized. In the millimeter wave optical generation part, optical heterodyning method can be introduced to generate a high-frequency millimeter-wave signal using a low-frequency signal source; and the system efficiency can be greatly improved based on injection-locking of a semiconductor laser. In the downlink, the transmission distance can be greatly enhanced by single-sideband modulation, which, based on an injection-locked semiconductor laser, is a much simpler solution. In the uplink, direct modulation of optical heterodyning signal can be used to realize the down-conversion of uplink millimeter-wave signal, which simplifies the receiver structure at the centre office. In the wavelength division multiplexing millimeter wave RoF duplex system, the wavelength reuse in both downlink and uplink can save the wavelength resource in the whole system, which improves its efficiency.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a scheme of all-optical broadband subcarrier demodulation in the up-link of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber systems. In this scheme, the subcarriers of all the WDM channels can be demodulated by only one optical demodulation module, hence its cost can be reduced remarkably. Because of its all-optical implementation, it can offer more bandwidth. The radio-frequency power degradation introduced by the channel dispersion is also avoided in this scheme even when the conventional simple double-sideband modulation method is employed in the base stations.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel scheme for module implementation of power equalization in wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) all-optical networks is proposed. The power equalization and the power amplification are united into one module and the node isolation principle is applied. The simulation shows that ours is more explicit and efficient than the traditional schemes. The larger number of cascaded nodes is permitted and the system performance (signal-to-noise ratio) can be kept without deterioration. Consequently, a feasible novel solution to power management in WDM all-optical networks is presented.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel full-duplex radio-over-fiber system using a Mach-Zehnder modulator along with fiber Bragg grating to generate an optical millimeter-wave signal that has four times the frequency of the microwave drive signal, which can carry downstream data. Meanwhile centralized lightwave reflect from the fiber Bragg gating is reused to carry upstream data. Since the centralized lightwave with high power is reused, the optical power can be utilized effectively. The experimental results show that the penalty of 2.5 Gb/s upstream data after transmission over 20km single-mode fiber is 1dB at the BER of 10-9. In this system, it can greatly reduce the bandwidth of microwave component and modulator, and the cost of system.

Abstract:A novel peer-to-peer (P2P) interconnection architecture in a 60-GHz millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radio-over-fiber (RoF) access network is proposed for the first time. In this scheme, the beating of the lightwaves for downlink and P2P transmissions at the photodiode (PD) can provide signal up-conversion for both signals. Phase noise and frequency instability between the two independent lightwaves can be eliminated by a self-heterodyned radio frequency (RF) receiver (envelope detector) located on the user terminal, which can also down-convert simultaneously the two mm-wave signals to their associated intermediate frequencies. No high-frequency clock sources or other high bandwidth devices are required for signal up/down-conversions. A proof-of-concept experimental demonstration has also been carried out. Error-free transmission of the 1-Gb/ signals is achieved over 50-km fiber (downlink) or 25-km fiber (P2P) plus 4-m air link.
