Abstract:We propose a downstream/upstream (DS/US) WDM-SDM-PON architecture employing the multicore fiber (MCF) realizing 300Gb/s aggregation DS rate and 20Gb/s US rate per wavelength. Figure 1 depicts the experimental setup. For DS transmission, ten wavelengths with 25GHz channel spacing are selected by a waveshaper from an optical frequency comb generator (OFCG)which is driven by a ECL seed laser centered at 1550.116nm. Then the ten CWs are simutaneously intensity modulated with 5Gb/s baseband QPSK-OFDM signal generated off-line by Matlab, where the IFFT/FFT size is 128 and 63 effective subcarriers are used to convey data information. The length of cyclic prefix (CP) of OFDM signal is 13, which is long enough to conquer the impact of chromatic dispersion of MCF. Boosted by EDFA, the signals are power splitted and simutaneously injected into one of six outer cores of the MCF through the fan-in device. After 60km MCF transmission, the signals are output through fan-out device. The fan-in/fan-out device is fabricated using chemical etched optical fiber bundles method [1]. After pre-amplifier and optical bandpass filter, one wavelength of output signal is directly detected by a photodetector (PD) with 4GHz bandwidth and then sampled by a 20GS/s digital sampled oscilloscope (DSO). Demodulation and bit error ratio (BER) counting are implemented offline. The DS transmission results are illustrated in Figure 2(a). No significant transmission performance deterioration is observed between OB2B and MCF transmission for all six spatial channels, and the BER can be kept under 3.8x10-3 at the received optical power of -16dBm. For US transmission, a CW laser from ECL is modulated by an IQ modulator with 20Gb/s QPSK signal generated by BER tester (BERT). The signal reusing the same wavelength is transmitted in the inner core of MCF to avoid the interference of Rayleigh backscattering effect. After amplification and filtering, the signal with power of about -1dBm is coherently detected at the optical line terminal. The US transmission result is shown in figure 2(b), which shows that more than 18 dB power budget can be guaranteed.

Abstract:We have proposed a novel WDM Terabit access network based on pre-DFT orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single photonic crystal fiber (PCF) supercontinuum (SC) light source. Duplex access with source-free ONUs is realized in this architecture. The single SC source can be shared with a number of ONUs and simplifies the network configuration, which can allow the realization of high-reliability as well as low-cost. The pre-DFT technology can help to mitigate the fiber nonlinearity of OFDM signal. A 2.5 THz wide frequency comb which is potential to support symmetric 2.56 Tb/s WDM pre-DFT OFDM access over 60 km with 1600 supported ONUs was demonstrated in the experiment. The demonstrated architecture may be viewed as one promising for future terabit optical metro/access.

Abstract:We propose a quantum access network based on multicore fiber (MCF) to scale up the number of users in quantum key distribution (QKD) networks. The MCF is used as feeder fiber and single core single mode fibers (SSMFs) are used as drop fibers. Quantum signals (QSs) are integrated with classical signals (CSs) in both MCF and SSMFs to save deployment cost since access networks are cost sensitive. Due to the integration, spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) and intercore crosstalk (ICXT) are the main impairment sources to QKD. To alleviate the noise, we propose a core and wavelength assignment scheme (CWAS) that a dedicated core of MCF is used to transmit QSs and the wavelengths of QSs are set lower than those of upstream signals. Also, we demonstrate that wavelength time division multiplexing (WTDM) is suitable for QSs which are required to support large number of quantum users, since WTDM can realize higher secure key rate (SKR) than time division multiplexing (TDM) and require lower cost than wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Finally, the proposed quantum access network is verified experimentally. The experiment results are consistent with our analysis. The properties of SRS in the proposed architecture are shown in the experiments through the quantum bit error rates (QBERs) in different experimental case, which verifies the superiority of the proposed CWAS. Also, the characteristics of the SKRs prove that the number of receivers has a great impact on the performance of QSs using WTDM.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, energy-saving mode-division-multiplexing passive optical network (MDM-PON) scheme utilizing self-homodyne detection for high-speed/capacity access network based on low modal-crosstalk few-mode fiber (FMF) and all-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). In the proposed scheme, one of the spatial modes is used to transmit a portion of signal carrier (namely pilot-tone) as the local oscillator (LO), while the others are used for signal-bearing channels. At the receiver, the pilot-tone and the signal can be separated without strong crosstalk and sent to the receiver for coherent detection. The spectral efficiency (SE) is significantly enhanced when multiple spatial channels are used. Meanwhile, the self-homodyne detection scheme can effectively suppress laser phase noise, which relaxes the requirement for the lasers line-width at the optical line terminal or optical network units (OLT/ONUs). The digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver is also simplified since it removes the need for frequency offset compensation and complex phase correction, which reduces the computational complexity and energy consumption. Polarization division multiplexing (PDM) that offers doubled SE is also supported by the scheme. The proposed scheme is scalable to multi-wavelength application when wavelength MUX/DEMUX is utilized. Utilizing the proposed scheme, we demonstrate a proof of concept 4 × 40-Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission over 55-km FMF using low modal-crosstalk two-mode FMF and MUX/DEMUX with error free operation. Compared with back to back case, less than 1-dB Q-factor penalty is observed after 55-km FMF of the four channels. Signal power and pilot-tone power are also optimized to achieve the optimal transmission performance.

Abstract:Recently mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) has been widely investigated to enhance fiber optics capacity, in which modes or mode groups in few-mode fiber (FMF) or multi-mode fiber (MMF) are exploited as different spatial channels for data transmission. For short-reach applications, significantly reducing inter-spatial-channel crosstalk to avoid coherent detection and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) equalization is preferred. Currently most studies focus on the design of weakly-coupled FMFs and mode (de)multiplexers. Alternatively, in this work, a wavelength-interleaved (WI) scheme is proposed to mitigate inter-spatial-channel crosstalk by optimizing the design of direct detection (DD) MDM and wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) system. In weakly-coupled MDM systems, crosstalk mainly comes from the adjacent spatial channels, and the signal-to-crosstalk beat interference (SCBI) constitutes main crosstalk impairment after square-law detection. The WI scheme interleaves the WDM grids in adjacent spatial channels by half WDM channel spacing and uses an electrical low-pass filtering (ELPF) to remove out-of-band SCBI. The effectiveness of SCBI suppression is theoretically analyzed. The feasibility of WI scheme is experimentally verified by 3-mode 3-wavelength MDM-WDM transmission over 500-m OM3 MMF. Enabled by WI scheme, record 120-km 10G-per-channel MDM-WDM transmission over 2-mode FMF without MIMO equalization is successfully demonstrated. The WI scheme is promising to enhance the performance of short reach or even metro MDM optics.

Abstract:A dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM)-based frequency-interleaved optical distributing system merging wired and wireless services is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed scheme, two channels of baseband signals for wired applications and two channels of 62.5-GHz radio-over-fiber signals for wireless applications with a data rate of 1.25 Gb/s share a single 100-GHz DWDM grid to increase the spectral efficiency. The signals are distributed over 40-km single-mode fiber without any compensation and only a power penalty of less than 0.5 dB is observed. Optical demultiplexers based on fiber Bragg gratings are used to select corresponding frequency components at access points.

Abstract:Wavelength reuse has been proposed as an effective solution to realize colorless optical network units (ONUs) for next-generation passive optical network with simplified maintenance and reduced cost. In this paper, we propose a wavelength reused mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) scheme for bidirectional short-reach optical access network with low mode-crosstalk multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) and few-mode fiber (FMF). In downstream (DS) transmission, one of the spatial modes in FMF is used to transmit optical carriers, while the others are used as DS signal channels. In upstream (US) transmission, the carrier is split to all the ONUs for US remodulation. By utilizing low mode-crosstalk mode MUX/DEMUX and FMF, the carrier and each signal channel can be effectively separated. Compared with other wavelength reused schemes in which the DS and US transmission are modulated in orthogonal dimension, the signal qualities on two transmission directions are independent in the proposed scheme, and symmetrical bidirectional transmission without residual remodulation crosstalk can be achieved. What is more, to reduce bidirectional Rayleigh backscattering noise, we propose to use different optical sidebands for DS and US transmission. With the proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate symmetrical bidirectional 2 × 12.5-Gb/s quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) intensity-modulation and direct-detection transmission over 11.5-km four-mode FMF. With Rayleigh backscattering noise mitigation, a Q-factor improvement of 2 dB is achieved for the US signal at the DS signal-to-carrier power ratio of -27 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a four-channel wavelength-division-multiplex (WDM) 560 Gbit/s 128 quadrature amplitude modulation (128QAM)-Discrete MultiTone (DMT) signal transmission in a short reach interconnect. Coordinated discrete Fourier transform-spread and preequalization are jointly used to simultaneously overcome serious frequency domain power attenuation and reduce the peak-to-average power ratio of the DMT signal. An additional postdecision-directed least mean square equalizer is used afterward to further compensate the channel response and mitigate the devices’ implementation penalty. These proposed algorithms and equalizer are validated through experiment in this paper, we achieved the highest capacity signal transmission in the four-channel WDM transmission system using intensitymodulation and directdetection over a 2.4-km single mode fiber with a bit-error-ratio under the hard-decision forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 .

Abstract:Advanced modulation formats combined with digital signal processing and direct detection is a promising way to realize high capacity, low cost and power efficient short reach optical transmission system. In this paper, we present a detailed investigation on the performance of three advanced modulation formats for 100 Gb/s short reach transmission system. They are PAM-4, CAP-16 and DMT. The detailed digital signal processing required for each modulation format is presented. Comprehensive simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of each modulation format in terms of received optical power, transmitter bandwidth, relative intensity noise and thermal noise. The performance of each modulation format is also experimentally studied. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first demonstration of a 112 Gb/s transmission over 10km of SSMF employing single band CAP-16 with EML. Finally, a comparison of computational complexity of DSP for the three formats is presented.

Abstract:A novel modularized twin-ring wavelength division multiplexer access network is proposed in this paper. By originally designing the switch module and the exchange module, the central office and the remote nodes are formed respectively. This gives the network both modularity and scalability. By using twin-ring topology, the architecture of network is constructed. It makes the network not only have high reliability, but also support wavelength tetra-reuse. By simulation, the mentioned functions are demonstrated. The simulating results show the network has good performance.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel fiber-wireless integrated mobile backhaul network based on a hybrid millimeter-wave (MMW) and free-space-optics (FSO) architecture using an adaptive combining technique. Both 60 GHz MMW and FSO links are demonstrated and fully integrated with optical fibers in a scalable and cost-effective backhaul system setup. Joint signal processing with an adaptive diversity combining technique (ADCT) is utilized at the receiver side based on a maximum ratio combining algorithm. Mobile backhaul transportation of 4-Gb/ s 16 quadrature amplitude modulation frequency-division multiplexing (QAM-OFDM) data is experimentally demonstrated and tested under various weather conditions synthesized in the lab. Abstract:A millimeter-wave (MMW) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system based on photonics is proposed. Its structure is simple, and the optical fiber-wireless structure can perfectly adapt to the current centralized fiber-distributed communication network. In the proposed system, the linear frequency modulated (LFM) signal and subcarrier modulated (SCM) 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal are combined by frequency division multiplexing (FDM). In the experiment, we verify a photonic-based ISAC W-band fiber-wireless integration system at 96.5 GHz over 10-km fiber transmission. We achieve 48 Gbit/s in communication-only mode and 8 Gbit/s in ISAC mode when the sensing resolution is 2.75 cm. By means of external calibration, the distance error of the system is less than 1 cm.

Abstract:As single-mode-fiber transmission systems are reaching their capacity limits, spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) techniques have been investigated to increase the per-fiber capacity. However, the compatibility with current single-mode transponders severely hinders the near-term deployment of SDM systems. In this paper, we experimentally propose two real-time SDM transmission schemes using commercial single-mode 400 G dual-polarized 16 quadrature amplitude modulation equipment. In the first experiment, 60 km weakly coupled single-mode 7-core fiber with a pair of fan-in and fan-out devices are adopted. In the second experiment, the fiber link consists of 60 km/150 km weakly coupled few-mode fiber (FMF) and low-modal-crosstalk mode multiplexers, in which only non-degenerate LP01 and LP02 modes are utilized. In order to investigate the effect of splice on SDM fiber links, 20-roll, 3 km multicore fibers (MCFs) and FMFs are spliced and tested in the experiments. The bit error rates of all SDM experiments are all below 4.75 × 10−2 forward-error-correction threshold of the 400 G transponders. The experimental results prove that the near-term deployment of SDM systems could be accelerated by utilizing weakly coupled MCFs or non-degenerate modes of weakly coupled FMFs which are compatible with commercial single-mode transponders without any software or hardware modifications.
