Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for transmitting a phase-modulated (PM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal along an existing fiber infrastructure without degradation of the existing baseband signal. Optical phase encoding of both signals, namely a baseband 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keyed signal and a 5.25-GHz RoF carrying 1.25 Gb/s, enables the use of identical optical receiver structures. The experimental results show that both receivers achieve error-free operation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. The proposed scheme has potential applications for converged wireless and wireline optical access networks.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate, transmit, and receive an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) continuous phase modulation (CPM) signal, which is combining minimum shift keying (MSK) coding with OFDM optical modulation, for downlink application in a 4 x 2.5-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) passive optical access network, is proposed and experimentally validated. We also realize wavelength remodulation for carrying upstream on-off keying (OOK) data to reduce the cost budget at the optical network unit. The experimental results show that the power penalties for the downlink and the uplink data after transmission over 25-km SMF-28 fiber are 0.1 dB and smaller than 0.4 dB, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we have proposed and demonstrated a novel lightwave centralized wavelength division multiplexing radio-over-fiber (WDM-RoF) system employing OFDM-CPM generation and carrier-reuse technique. The 4×2.5-Gb/s OFDM-CPM wireless signal and upstream OOK signal are transmitted over 25km SMF-28 successfully. We further compare the OFDM-CPM signal with an OFDM-QPSK signal, and the experimental results suggest that OFDM-CPM modulation scheme will be a promising candidate for future WDM-RoF system.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel WDM-ROF-PON architecture based on 16QAM-OFDM modulation for bidirectional access networks is proposed and demonstrated. We theoretically investigate the operating principle of the system, in our simulation, the intensity modulation of 10Gb/s 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16-QAM) orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals are employed for downlink and the demodulated base-band signals are demonstrated, and the optical carrier is reused for uplink. Both the downstream and upstream signals have been transmitted over 40-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF-28) without optical dispersion compensation. Our theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results show the WDM-ROF-PON architecture will be a promising candidate in next generation optical networks.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel interleave division multiple access technique with complexity-simplified receivers for a 32 x 1.25-Gb/s multiuser wavelength-division multiplexing-polarization multiplexing-passive optical network (WDM-PoMUX-PON) scheme compatible with a 40-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system for the first time. A 2-m wireless and 40-km single-mode fiber-28 downlink transmission of 32-user signals at 1.25 Gb/s, and transmission of 4 x 5-Gb/s on-off keying upstream have been achieved. Based on extrinsic information transfer chart analysis, we further investigate the convergence property of the proposed complexity-simplified receivers. The experimental results show that this scheme is a cost-effective solution for multiuser access in future WDM-RoF-PON, and the power penalty of the original and proposed receivers can be neglected.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a bidirectional radio-frequency (RF) up-converted orthogonal frequency-division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA-PON) system. Novel source-free optical network units (ONUs) are configured in the proposed OFDMA-PON system, which can support simultaneous and interference-free upstream transmission from multiple ONUs over a single wavelength in a single-fiber topology. The four-wave mixing effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier is utilized in the optical line terminal to enable its configuration. Experimental results successfully verify the feasibility of our proposed system.

Abstract:A new, to the best of our knowledge, scheme for a wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) based on a flat optical frequency comb (OFC) is proposed. Using an OFC as the optical source of the system can realize the colorlessness of optical network units (ONUs), and the direct detection of the downlink data further simplifies the ONU structure. The coherent demodulation of the uplink data improves the system performance due to the coherence of the comb lines. In this research, the proposed system is studied for its performance and power budgeting. The results show the flexibility, effectiveness, and practicability of the proposed scheme, which can be applied to future high-capacity optical access networks.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a full-duplex integrated passive optical network (PON) and indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) system. For the PON part, an external cavity laser (ECL) and a directly modulated laser (DML) are used as optical sources for downlink and uplink, respectively. The OWC subsystem utilizes a visible light-emitting diode (LED) for downlink and an infrared LED (IR-LED) for uplink transmission. To enable high spectral efficiency (SE), high-speed transmission, and flexible multiple access with simplified optical network unit (ONU)-side digital signal processing (DSP), multilevel, multiband quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and hybrid 128/64/16 Nyquist single-carrier frequency domain equalization (N-SC-FDE) modulation are implemented in this paper. In terms of 62.5 MHz OWC N-SC-FDE signals, the system successfully delivered a further 140 cm indoor distance after transmitting over a span of 25 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) together with three subbands of 250 MHz PON signals. As a proof of concept, an integrated system of symmetrical full-duplex 5 Gb/s PON and 250 Mb/s OWC at each direction for three wired users and one wireless user is successfully achieved. The measured bit error ratios (BERs) for each user are all smaller than the 7% pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) limit of 3.8 x 10(-3), which shows the promising potential and feasibility of this proposal to extend multiple services from metro areas to suburban areas.

Abstract:We introduce 10 × 10 Gb/s RZ‐DPSK‐DWDM links in the architecture integration of MIMO‐OFDM system. The optical communication performance and wireless communication performance is analyzed in the integrated system. The long distance transmission for RZ‐DPSK WDM is done, and the demodulated RZ‐DPSK signal is transformed to the binary data, which is given to MIMO‐OFDM‐QPSK wireless communication system. Two MIMO‐OFDM‐QPSK wireless system is designed with two transmit antennas and one receive antenna and four transmit antennas and one receive antenna. The BER performance of almost 10−3 is achieved at SNR of 11 dB with four transmit antennas and one receive antenna, which is better when compared to two transmit antennas and one receive antenna. The results prove that seamless integration of RZ‐DPSK‐DWDM optical links with MIMO‐OFDM system is suitable to simultaneously offer higher receiver performance and simplify system configuration for fourth generation wide‐area coverage mobile communication. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A novel architecture of converged radio-over-fiber (RoF) and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system, namely RoE-WDM-PON, is demonstrated. 20-GHz 1-Gb/s radio frequency (R,F) signals and 1-Gb/s baseband (BB) signals are simultaneously generated and transmitted using optical carrier suppression (OCS) modulation techniques. The proposed scheme is compatible with the conventional RoF and PON system. 25-km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission is successfully achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, energy-saving mode-division-multiplexing passive optical network (MDM-PON) scheme utilizing self-homodyne detection for high-speed/capacity access network based on low modal-crosstalk few-mode fiber (FMF) and all-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). In the proposed scheme, one of the spatial modes is used to transmit a portion of signal carrier (namely pilot-tone) as the local oscillator (LO), while the others are used for signal-bearing channels. At the receiver, the pilot-tone and the signal can be separated without strong crosstalk and sent to the receiver for coherent detection. The spectral efficiency (SE) is significantly enhanced when multiple spatial channels are used. Meanwhile, the self-homodyne detection scheme can effectively suppress laser phase noise, which relaxes the requirement for the lasers line-width at the optical line terminal or optical network units (OLT/ONUs). The digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver is also simplified since it removes the need for frequency offset compensation and complex phase correction, which reduces the computational complexity and energy consumption. Polarization division multiplexing (PDM) that offers doubled SE is also supported by the scheme. The proposed scheme is scalable to multi-wavelength application when wavelength MUX/DEMUX is utilized. Utilizing the proposed scheme, we demonstrate a proof of concept 4 × 40-Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission over 55-km FMF using low modal-crosstalk two-mode FMF and MUX/DEMUX with error free operation. Compared with back to back case, less than 1-dB Q-factor penalty is observed after 55-km FMF of the four channels. Signal power and pilot-tone power are also optimized to achieve the optimal transmission performance.

Abstract:A novel subband access scheme for multiband high-speed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) passive optical network (PON) is proposed, where the granularity of the bandwidth allocation is as small as the bandwidth of just one subcarrier and the ONUs only receives the desired subcarriers according to the bandwidth allocation strategy from the whole downstream OFDM signal without band limitation. Since the ONUs do not have to receive a complete OFDM band, low-bandwidth and low-speed devices can be used to reduce ONU cost. The algorithm used in the scheme is also explained in detail, and a 1-Tb/s experimental system is successfully established to prove the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The unique advantage of orbital angular momentum (OAM) provides a novel approach to breaking through the limitations of high‐capacity and long‐distance transmission in the conventional radio‐overfiber passive optical network (RoF‐PON) hybrid access network. Introducing the OAM division multiplexing (OAM‐DM) based on Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beams into the RoF‐PON, an innovative multidimensional system architecture is proposed, which integrates with polarization‐division multiplexing (PDM), wavelength‐division multiplexing (WDM), and orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing (OFDM) technologies. Successful long‐distance transmission of both the downstream 40 GHz radio OFDM signal and the upstream 40 Gbps on‐off keying (OOK) signal over 80 km are achieved. Additionally, at the optical network unit side, low‐cost upstream carrier re‐modulation technology and flexible access for both wired and wireless signals are realized. The proposed RoF‐OAM‐DM‐PDM‐WDM‐OFDM‐PON architecture offers a dependable solution for high‐capacity and low‐cost future communication systems, holding great importance in achieving flexible access networks.
