Abstract:We propose a novel static primary routing algorithm, called ALB Dijkstra (Adaptive Load Balancing Dijkstra), which introduces new concepts and methods into the traditional Dijkstra algorithm to improve its performance with respect to burst drop probability in optical burst switching networks. This new algorithm has a basic version and an extended version, which are applicable to networks with and without wavelength converters, respectively. By introducing two new concepts of virtual link cost and virtual link-wavelength cost, the new algorithm is able to take account of the influence of actual topology and traffic load distribution in its adaptive searching procedure. ALB Dijkstra offers a fast approach to optimized path selection so that link resources can be utilized efficiently. Numerical simulations show that the overall network performance is significantly improved over the ordinary shortest-path routing strategy. Abstract:The deflection routing protocol is an effective contention resolution in Optical Burst Switching network. However, it can worsen loss performance of non-deflected burst on the deflection route. To improve the burst loss performance, a limited deflection routing scheme based on burst loss threshold is proposed to prevent injudicious deflection routing. By using threshold check function, it restrainedly allows the deflected burst to preemptive network resource, consequently, improve the QoS performance of non-deflected burst. Simulation results show that the scheme can efficiently prevent deflected burst contending with non-deflected burst on deflection route, and effectively improve the burst loss performance of entire networks.

Abstract:Most sensor networks employ distributed and dynamic routing protocols. The flexibility that each node can choose the best forwarder from a diverse candidate set could offer excellent routing performance when the network is highly dynamic. However, it sacrifices routing predictability since it is possible that routing loops are frequently formed. Can we increase the network predictability by controlling the network? As a step towards solving this problem, we introduce FlexCut, a flexible approach for cutting off wireless links, which essentially limits the candidate forwarder set of each node. Unlike existing SDN solutions, FlexCut introduces flexible control over existing distributed and dynamic routing protocols. FlexCut can trade arbitrary amounts of routing diversity for better network performance by exposing to network operators a parameter which quantifies the aggressiveness. We propose novel algorithms, both centralized and distributed, to cut off user-defined number of links so that loops can be alleviated while routing flexibility can be preserved to the largest extent. We evaluate FlexCut extensively by both testbed experiments and simulations. Results show that FlexCut improves the performance by 40% ~ 90% compared with a baseline algorithm in terms of our optimization goal. Results also show that FlexCut can improve the network performance of a sensor network by 20% ~ 35%, 30% ~ 50%, 25% respectively, in terms of packet delivery ratio, transmission delay and radio duty cycle.

Abstract:Load balancing can effectively improve network performance and scalability, but it may cause packet disorder, so worsening the performance. Additionally, without MPLS to establish the desired end-to-end paths, hop-by-hop routing load balancing is more difficult to achieve than the source routing; however, it can significantly improve network performance. In this paper, we propose a load balancing scheme with hop-by-hop routing, by using the burstiness features of flows to make sure that the packets of the same flow arrive at the receiving end in order. Simulation results show that our algorithm can adapt to the dynamic changes of the end-to-end delay and the routing vector, and also can achieve fine-gained load balancing.

Abstract:The most critical challenge in the design of burst optical networks is burst contention, which occurs when multiple bursts contend for the same wavelength on the same link at a certain node simultaneously. The techniques to address this problem include contention resolutions as well as contention avoidance. In contention resolution approaches, conflicts are resolved in wavelength, time or space domain when they have occurred. In contention avoidance approaches, bursty traffic is distributed through routes that are dynamically re-computed or selected according to network congestion status to avoid potential conflicts in advance. Current dynamic routing schemes for OBS are all based on global information, resulting in bandwidth consumption at signaling channels and a considerable delay between network status change and adaptation of the routing tables. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic routing selection mechanism based on local statistical information, namely dynamic alternative routing, to balance load and avoid contentions in OBS networks. In this mechanism, a route is dynamically selected from the primary path and the alternative route for an incoming burst. The simulation results show the blocking probability of the proposal is significantly reduced and load balancing is efficiently achieved compared to the general OBS.

Abstract:The combination of deflection routing and burst retransmission is an attractive scheme for resolving the burst contention problem in Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks. Most of previous works on hybrid schemes use simulation approach to prove the efficicency. In this paper, we develop an analytical model for obtaining the overall burst loss ratio of an OBS network that take into account deflection and retransmission togetther. The accuracy of the proposed model is confirmed by extensive simulations upon the NS-2 simulator and two typical networks topologies. Numerical results obtained from the model indicate that at low traffic load, the hybrid scheme significantly outperforms the conventional deflection routing and burst retransmission schemes in terms of overall burst loss ratio. However, at high traffic load, the simple hybrid scheme performs even worse than the other schemes.

Abstract:A new scheme for optical burst switching (OBS) networks under self-similar traffic is proposed in this paper. Self-similar traffic is classified into two types of payload by partial pre-deflection edge node router, and the two types of payload are transferred using different routing algorithms - least hop first routing and shortest path first routing respectively, in order to properly utilize network resources and avoid burst contention at the core node switch. Simulation results indicate that the new scheme performs better than fixed routing and alternative routing for OBS networks under self-similar traffic. Furthermore, the implement of this scheme is feasible and easy, which makes OBS technology more applicable in network engineering (NE).

Abstract:A novel contention resolution scheme for optical burst switching (OBS) networks is proposed. Traffic payload is classified into two types at the edge nodes, and they are transferred through the core nodes using two different routing algorithms-least-hop first routing and shortest-path first routing, respectively, leading to balanced traffic loads among fiber links. By using this contention resolution scheme, active avoidance of burst contention is achieved. Performance evaluation and simulation results indicate that the new scheme outperforms the commonly used shortest-path first routing and is robust under both Poisson and self-similar traffic. Furthermore, the new scheme can provide quality-of-service (QOS) differentiation when used with wavelength conversion, and the implementation of this scheme is easy, which makes OBS technology more applicable in network engineering. Abstract:The multi-log(2)N network architecture is attractive for constructing optical switches, and the related routing algorithms are critical for the operation and efficiency of such switches. Although several routing algorithms have been proposed for multi-log(2)N networks, a full performance comparison among them has not been published lip to now. Thus, we rectify this omission by providing Such a comparison in terms of blocking probability, time complexity, hardware cost and load balancing capability. Notice that the load balance is important for reducing the peak power requirement of a switch, so we also propose in this paper a new routing algorithm for optical multi-log(2)N networks to achieve a better load balance.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamic multicast routing problem for WDM networks with sparse light splitting. We propose a hybrid multicast algorithm based on the combination of mobile agent technique and genetic algorithm. Simulation results based upon the ns-2 network simulator indicate that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the available algorithms in terms of blocking probability.

Abstract:Constraint-based wavelength routing comes with the cost of higher blocking probability to provide Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee in Service-guaranteed optical networks; thus a load balancing method is presented in this paper to improve the performance of constraint-based wavelength routing. Also the Modified Backward-Forward heuristic (MBFH) is proposed, which can be utilized to select an optimal lightpath with one constraint. Simulation results show that with the application of load balancing method, constraint-based wavelength routing based on the MBFH can achieve better performances in terms of blocking probability and resource utilization ability.

Abstract:To reduce burst drop probability is a key issue in optical burst switching networks for it was connected strongly with the network's overall performance. In this paper, we propose a novel O/E/O conversion and electronic storage based strategy to resolve burst contention. Unlike traditional FDLs based contention resolution which is only able to provide discrete buffering time, O/E/O storage based strategy can offer unlimited buffering time. We propose an intermediate node architecture and corresponding scheduling algorithm called Nearest Available Void (NAV). Simulations show that our novel burst contention resolution enjoys high contention resolution capability and only introduce extremely low extra delay time compared to FDLs based mechanism. The maximum electronic RAM demand is also studied, and the result shows that the demand is comparatively small, which implies the cost of this strategy can be economic.

Abstract:To provide determined network services, including high bandwidth, low data loss, low latency, and low jitter services, to transmission and computing resource integration networks, a novel routing optimization method is proposed. Based on physical-layer collision awareness and transparent packet duplication, delay and deletion, high-reliability and low-latency all-optical communication can be achieved. In addition, this method has the potential to be adapted to rapidly time-varying topologies and link lengths in wireless optical networks. In this paper, the processing and distribution of data packets in this routing optimization method are described; a structure of the all-optical switching node for supporting this routing optimization method is presented; and the influence of switching node performance, such as the maximum cache time, the maximum multicast packet number and the perception latency, on end-to-end availability are analyzed by simulation.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is thought to be the best way to adapt the bursty IP traffic over optical WDM networks. It provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of OBS is mainly hampered at network nodes by burst contention. The contention is serious constraints on the capacity of OBS networks. A leading source of contention is the congestion at congested links where a limited number of wavelengths are shared by a lot of bursts. These congested links are stemming from burst routing algorithms. In this paper, we studied on routing path competition phenomenon. We proposed a differentiated QoS aware multipath routing algorithm for OBS networks. This algorithm is evaluated through extensive numerical studies over a typical topology--the 14-node NSFnet. Results show that it outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of burst blocking probability and link utilization.

Abstract:A class-aware routing scheme is proposed in this paper for OBS networks providing offset-time-based differentiated services (DiffServ). To unravel the structure of the routing problem, mathematical programming formulations are utilized. An optimization model for two-class OBS networks is presented and studied in particular. The objective is to minimize the burst loss probability over the entire network for both traffic classes. The effectiveness of the routing model is evaluated via illustrative examples based on programming techniques. Numerical results show that compared with traditional class-oblivious routing schemes, class-aware routing further reduces the burst loss probability of multiple classes especially when the network load is light or moderate.

Abstract:A crucial issue in optical burst switching (OBS) networks is burst loss caused by resource contention. As a result, many methods are currently being proposed to reduce burst loss rate. These methods can be summed up into two categories: burst scheduling algorithms and contention resolutions. Both categories of methods can reduce burst loss rate to a certain degree. However, to make OBS to become a viable solution, the burst loss rate needs to be further reduced. Furthermore, almost all methods ignore the fact that an unfortunately scheduled, locally generated single-hop burst could block a number of future incoming transit bursts, though the burst just travels to its next downstream node. This phenomenon becomes more evident when links are heavily loaded in mesh OBS networks. To eliminate contention caused by single-hop traffic completely, this paper proposes a novel transfer mode called packet calking by differentiating between single-hop traffic from multihop traffic for OBS networks. An analysis model is developed to evaluate the performance of packet calking. Theoretical results are validated through extensive simulations in both ring and mesh networks. These results show that packet calking outperforms the transfer mode without packet calking in terms of burst loss rate and link utilization.
