Abstract:UHVDC commutation failure and DC block need to be studied in detail, for they will evidently affect the safety and stability of AC power grid Firstly, the main circuit and control system are studied and analyzed in depth. Then, the simulation model is established in PSCAD software. After that, the curves of commutation failure and DC block in different cases are obtained Finally, the correctness of this simulation platform is verified by comparison of some recording curves.

Abstract:A ferromagnetic series resonance, which will cause serious resonance over-voltage, exists in load testing of the developing 10 kV/500 A/2500 A transformer coupling solid state fault current limiter (SSFCL) with pure capacitance load. The cause of the resonance is analyzed in detail. The special control strategies, as well as damping resistance to eliminate the harmful resonance are discussed. The effectiveness of the methods is verified by simulation and the real testing.
A Research of D-FSC for Improving Voltage Quality in Distribution Networks

Abstract:For improving the voltage quality of domestic distribution network, as FSC has never been used before, this paper puts forward a new research topic of distribution-fixed series capacitors (D-FSC). The basic principle of D-FSC in improving the voltage profile of radial distribution line is simply analyzed and the structure chart of it is introduced. D-FSC’s two features of self-adaption to variable load and real-time response, and two main effects of improving the voltage distribution along the line and decreasing voltage sag degree are expounded, and the effectiveness is verified using example analysis. The method to determine the location and capacity is introduced. Overvoltage protection design scheme, and precautions against ferroresonance and induction motor’s self-excitation are proposed. The function of D-FSC’s controller is presented. By the survey from electric power market, D-FSC has a good application prospect in domestic distribution network.

Abstract:DC capacitors are widely adopted in grid-connected PhotoVoltaic(PV) systems for power stabilization and control decoupling. They have become one of the critical components in grid-connected PV inverters in terms of cost, reliability and volume. The electrical and thermal stresses of the DC capacitors are varying along with the intermittent solar PV energy (i.e. of weather-dependency) and also the grid conditions (e.g. voltage fault transients). This paper serves to translate real-field mission profiles (i.e. solar irradiance and ambient temperature) into voltage, current, and temperature stresses of the DC capacitors under both normal and abnormal grid conditions. As a consequence, this investigation provides new insights into the sizing and reliability prediction of those capacitors with respect to priorart studies. Two study cases on a single-stage PV inverter and a two-stage PV inverter are demonstrated by simulations and experiments. The results have verified the discussions.
Research on working condition of key components for fixed series compensation in 1000 kV UHVAC power transmission project

Abstract:Based on the extension project of 1000 kV AC power transmission demonstration project from Changzhi via Nanyang to Jingmen and utilizing electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) the working conditions of key components for fixed series compensation in 1000 kV UHVAC power transmission under internal faults, namely the faults occurred between the circuit breakers at both sides of the line where the series compensation locates, and the external fault, namely all faults except internal faults, are researched. It is first proposed to use the combination of metal oxide varistor (MOV) with parallel gap as the overvoltage protection measure for UHVAC fixed series compensation: during the external fault the overvoltage is only suppressed by MOV while the parallel gap does not act; during the internal fault the spark gap and by-pass switch act, thus the capacitor and MOV are bypassed. The overvoltage protection level for UHVAC series compensation is 2.3 pu; the maximum energy dissipation level of the MOV for the series compensation of No. 1 transmission line from Changzhi to Nanyang and that for the series compensation of No. 1 transmission line from Nanyang to Jingmen are 57 MJ per phase and 45 MJ per phase respectively; the damping circuit composed of reactor and MOV with resistance connected in series is used as the discharging damper for the series compensation capacitor and the natural vibration frequency of capacitor discharging circuit is about 300 Hz; during short-circuit fault the maximum discharging current of spark gap for UHVAC series compensation and bypass switch is 153 kA.

Abstract:Submodule (SM) capacitors are key elements in the modular multilevel converter (MMC), the design of which influences the entire system performance. In practical cases, SM capacitor sizing must consider the abnormal system operation (e.g., grid faults). In order to find a clear design boundary for SM capacitors, a practical capacitor sizing method is presented for the first time in this paper, considering the grid-fault-ride-through operation of the MMC, impact of MMC control system, and aging mechanism of capacitors. The SM capacitor rated voltage, capacitance, ESR, thermal resistance, and lifetime can be decided to ensure reliable operations of the MMC during grid faults. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified through experimental tests on a down-scale MMC system.

Abstract:Unified power flow controller with fault current limiting (UPFC-FCL) is a novel flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) device combining bridge solid-state fault current limiter with UPFC, which can protect UPFC from large fault current in a power system. The short circuit mathematical model of UPFC-FCL is established. This paper puts forward a novel method to calculate the DC capacitor, which takes the power system current limiting index, maximum degree of unified power flow controller compensation, insulated bipolar transistor (IGBT) voltage and the DC voltage limit value as the basis, to ensure the reliability of UPFC-FCL when a short-circuit occurs. A 100V/3kVA UPFC-FCL experimental model is established, verifying the feasibility and reliability of the DC capacitor design parameters.
Research on transient overvoltage for converter station of Zhoushan multi-terminal VSC-HVDC project

Abstract:Zhoushan multi-terminal VSC-HVDC project will be the first DC transmission project with five converter stations in the world which is based on modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology. To study the overvoltage of each converter station, overvoltage mechanism of AC and DC switchyard are analyzed in detail based on this project, and overvoltage levels in typical faults such as single-phase-to-ground fault at the valve side of converter transformer and at the valve side of converter reactor, DC pole line ground fault, ground fault at the valve side of DC smoothing reactor and DC to DC pole line fault are calculated based on the MMC-HVDC model with five stations. Results show that the maximum overvoltage for AC bus at the valve side of converter transformer is 360 kV;the maximum overvoltage for DC bus at the line side and at the valve side of the DC smoothing reactor are 370 kV and 369 kV respectively; the maximum overvoltage of the neutral point of star reactance grounded branch and converter reactor are 188 kV and 235 kV respectively;the maximum energy of arrester CB and D are 1.258 MJ and 1.655 MJ respectively. The research results will provide important basis for the insulation coordination of station devices.

Abstract:A new Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) based on the Hybrid Cascaded Multilevel Converter (HCMC-STATCOM) is presented in this paper for the sake of decreasing the number, size and stored energy of the capacitors used in the STATCOM. The HCMC-STATCOM is comprised of one conventional three-phase two-level converter and one Wave-shaping Circuit (WSC) consisting of cascaded H-bridge Sub-modules (SMs). An in-depth analysis and design of the capacitor parameters is done to reduce the cost and footprint of the HCMC-STATCOM. Moreover, a detailed comparison between the HCMC-STATCOM and the conventional Cascaded H-bridge STATCOM (CHB-STATCOM) is made, which proves that the number and stored energy of the capacitors in the HCMC-STATCOM are obviously smaller than that of the CHB-STATCOM. Finally, a 35kV/+/- 100Mvar HCMC-STATCOM mode based on PSCAD/EMTDC is established and then the technical feasibility of the proposed topology and the accuracy of the theoretical analysis are verified.

Abstract:Increasing load requires more power transferred from distant plants. However, it is difficult to construct more power transmission lines to meet such load demand because of the limits of right of way (ROW). As a result, the Northeast China Electric Power Group plans to install thyristor controlled series compensation (TCSC) in the Yimin-Fengtun 500 kV transmission system. Research work involving system analyses is undertaken in the Electric Power Research Institute. This paper discusses several aspects of theory and engineering studies and present some useful results for further studies. Study on Fault Ride-Through Capability of Wind Farm Integration Using MMC-HVDC

Abstract:Due to various advantages, high voltage direct current transmission based on voltage source converter (VSC-HVDC) is gradually coming into practice. It realizes the independent control of both active and reactive power, and has a good dynamic ability of reactive power support. Moreover, if used in wind power transmission, VSC-HVDC decouples the wind farm and the AC grid, which effectively enhances the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of wind power system. There are mainly three VSC circuits for HVDC application at present: HVDC Light of ABB, HVDC Plus of SIMENS, and alternate-arm multilevel converter (A2MC) of Alstom. Schemes from ABB and SIMENS have been widely used, which both apply VSC for ac/dc conversion. HVDC Light uses two-level converter with serial structure of insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT), which has advantages like small volume, light weight, and simple control of converter arm. However, it also has some disadvantages, such as more switching loss, higher harmonics in output power, and difficulty in implementing synchronous driving technology for serial IGBTs. HVDC Plus uses modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology, which has obvious advantages in reducing switching loss, lowering harmonic content, upgrading capacity, and managing fault problems. Besides that, MMC has shown superiority in improving FRT capability of wind power system, as studied in the paper. For large-scale wind farm integrated through VSC-HVDC system, when a short-circuit fault occurs in AC grid, the grid-side inverter station transmits less power while there is no change in wind power, which leads to imbalance of power in HVDC system, rise of dc voltage, and disturbances in wind farm. Worse still, the whole HVDC system may collapse under more serious conditions. Converter station built in MMC topology can improve the fault characteristics of wind farm integrated through VSC-HVDC system, and alleviate its disturbances after fault.The paper briefly introduces the basic principles and method of choosing the capacitors of traditional two-level VSC circuit and MMC circuit. To study on FRT problem for wind farm integrated through VSC-HVDC system, a two-terminal VSC-HVDC simulation model of doubly-fed wind farm connected to AC grid respectively through MMC station and traditional VSC station is established in PSCAD/EMTDC, and control strategy of each part is discussed. When there is a three-phase short-circuit fault in AC grid, the FRT capability of VSC-HVDC system with wind farm that integrates through two different schemes is analyzed, and control effects of prevalent FRT method on the wind power system under the two schemes are compared, thus obtaining the influence of converter station built in MMC topology on FRT capability of wind farm integrated through VSC-HVDC system. Capacitors in MMC modules play a crucial role in enhancing the system's FRT capability. The conclusions can provide reference for promoting application of MMC in VSC-HVDC system for transmitting wind power.

Abstract:Application of series capacitor compensation used in distribution line can bring about positive and notime-lag reactive compensation,and can improve the voltage quality of the line.It is load-adaptive and has the good operability.Because of the complexity and otherness of distribution lines,it is needed to know well the steady and transient characteristics,capacity,position,influencing factors about the series capacitor compensation to achieve the good result.This paper establishes a typical model of the series capacitor compensation for 10 kV radial distribution line using EMTP,and makes systematic effective analyzes such as wire diameter,load-capacity and cosψ,capacity and position to the voltage along the line.It gives the transient process results in the inside of compensa-tion device under 3 phase breakdown,and the relationship between close-time of bypass circuit breaker and absorp-tion capacity of MOV.

Abstract:As one of the bottlenecks of HVDC technology, the high failure rate of dry-type DC bushing seriously restricts the safe and stable operation of HVDC system. During the actual operation, discharges between capacitor screens occur from time to time, in addition to the screen edges, a certain number of breakdown occur in the middle of screens. For this reason, according to the radial section of a real bushing core, the deformation in the middle screens was analyzed, the curing shrinkage deformation model of the dry-type bushing core was established, and the causes were analyzed. Subsequently, to determine the effect of deformation in the middle of the capacitor screen on the distribution of electric field between capacitor screens, a simulation model of electric field with deformation in the middle of screens was established, and the effect of different deformation on the electric field was studied. The results show that the poor local impregnation results in the deformation in the middle of screens toward the center of alumina tube. In addition, the increase of the deformation area's height, and the decrease of thickness of the capacitor screen and the deformation area's width will enhance the electric field distortion.

Abstract:The relationship of the operation condition of the cascaded static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) and the system short circuit capacity is studied by theoretical analysis and simulation.The cascaded STATCOM operation condition is presented that the system short circuit capacity must excess a minimum value,which is the minimum system short circuit capacity.By modeling the equivalent circuit of the cascaded STATCOM,the minimum value of the system short circuit capacity can be calculated.The analysis is verified by simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC.

Abstract:The Yimin-Fengtun thyristor controlled series compensation (TCSC) system that is under research will be situated at a main corridor of 500 kV transmission system of northeast China. The TCSC will be used to increase the transient stability and dynamic stability of the power system. In order to adapt to the development of the transmission system, the design for the controller must meet the requirements of systemization and robustness. The TCSC project will be the first FACTS (flexible ac transmission systems) project installed in the main grid of China. In this paper, based on the real engineering project, systematic research is done on the models of the TCSC, the control algorithms, the development of simulation software and the implementation of the TCSC. Some achievements have been obtained on the studies of engineering applications, control schemes, electromagnetic transient models and electromechanical transient models of the TCSC and software development as well. Abstract:In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of fixed series complement (FSC) and controllable series complement (TCSC) in long-distance transmission are analyzed in detail: FSC has the characteristics of improving line transmission capacity and increasing transient stability, but the control is not flexible enough, which may cause sub-synchronous oscillation and insufficient damping. TCSC has the characteristics of suppressing power Angle oscillation and improving transmission power limit. Considering the two factors of economy and efficiency, a method combining FSC and TCSC is proposed. Taking a typical single-machine infinite system as an example, TCSC adopts the linear control plus bang-Bang control strategy in BPA of China Electric Power Research Institute. According to the research, the transmission capacity of the line can be effectively improved by configuring series complement under different conditions, such as no series complement, only FSC and mutual supplement between FSC and TCSC, and with the increase of TCSC comparison, It is more obvious to resist functional oscillation.

Abstract:In order to maximize the utility of renewable energy resources, long-distance power transmission lines are essentially required. To accomplish this purpose, the voltage-source-converter (VSC) based high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is considered an attractive option. However, due to DC-link capacitors and their discharge currents, the VSC-HVDC based transmission networks are more vulnerable to short circuit faults. The direct current circuit-breakers (DCCBs) are considered a reliable option to protect the transmission line against short circuit faults. The DCCBs with increased voltage rating and fault-current interruption capability are still considered a gigantic problem. The capacity issues of DCCBs can be alleviated using some external circuits to reduce the intensity of fault-current. This paper introduces an external fault-current limiting circuit (FCLC), which is non-superconducting in nature, and it consists of power electronics-based bidirectional switches, current limiting inductor, and power dissipating resistor. This circuit is placed in series with a DCCB, to escalate the response time in the advent of fault, to restrict the maximum value of fault-current, and to reduce the stresses on energy absorption components in DCCB. The circuit is activated only when fault-current limitation operation is required, thereby, the proposed FCLC has zero power-loss in the nonoperational state, and has no influence on the steady-state performance of the system. Furthermore, regarding FCLC, the detailed working principle, parametric analysis, and rigorous evaluation of performance are accomplished in this paper. The theoretical concepts are validated using a three-terminal VSC-HVDC model and equivalent circuit analysis, in PSCAD/ EMTDC simulation-based environment. The results of FCLC are compared with other solutions in the literature. The comparison of results concludes that the proposed FCLC own better characteristics, in terms of control features, fault clearing time, and power losses.
Study on Transients and Effect on Capacitor Voltage Transformer Caused by Disconnector Switching of UHV Series Capacitor Banks

Abstract:During the system commissioning test of Ultra High Voltage (UHV) project with Series Capacitors Banks (SCB), the adjacent capacitor voltage transformer (CVT) was damaged during the switching operation of disconnectors of SCB. In this paper, the transients on adjacent CVT caused by disconnector switching of UHV SCB were studied by simulation. The causes of damage of CVT were analyzed. The effectiveness of suppressing the transients by use of damping resistor of disconnector, series reactor and series resistor were studied by simulation. In UHV AC test base, a test circuit was established. It includes true type UHV SCB platform, UHV CVT and disconnector. Tests were carried out when the circuit was with or without limitation measures. Test results were compared with the simulation results. The simulation and Test results were in agreement.
