Abstract:A tunable silicon photonic microring resonator with radius of 2 µm is demonstrated at 2-µm waveband. Ultra-large free spectral range of 75.312 nm and extinction ratio of 23.93 dB are achieved.

Abstract:Considering the requirement of monochromaticity and tunability for resonator used in on-chip optical interconnect source,we design and make a tunable silicon reflection cavity mirror based on microring resonator,using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology and silicon material on insulating substrate.The performance of the reflection cavity is analyzed by the transfer-matrix method,and we find that the reflection cavity shows good properties in sharpness and extinction ratio.The experimental results show that the reflectivity of the reflection cavity can reach 90％ at the wavelength of 1549 nm,the quality factor is 3 × 104,and the free spectral range (FSR) is 9.6 nm.By applying the thermo-optic modulation to the microring resonator,the wavelength tunability in FSR can be realized within the power range of 0-40.5 mW.

Abstract:We demonstrate a silicon multiple microring based optical (liter with tunable bandwidth and wavelength. The bandwidth can be tuned from 0.6 to 2.8 nm and the wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers.

Abstract:An ultra-compact silicon bandpass filter with wide bandwidth tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter architecture is based on a multiple micro-ring resonator-cascaded structure. A wide bandwidth tunability (from 75 to 300 GHz) can be achieved by controlling the resonant frequency of the microring resonators when a good shape factor (0.24-0.44) is held. The filter has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz). The center wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers linearly. The footprint is only 0.053 mm(2). (C) 2016 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Compact all-pass and add-drop microring resonators (radius=10 μm) integrated with grating couplers working at 2 μm wavelength are designed, fabricated, and characterized on a commercial 340-nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator platform. They are suitable for high-volume integrated optical circuits at 2 μm wavelength as the fabrication process involved are uncomplicated and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-process compatible, thus making them more convenient to be utilized. The performance of the grating couplers, based on four most important parameters, has been simulated and optimized. The simulation and experimental results of grating couplers show the lowest coupling loss of 4.5 dB and 6.5 Db, respectively. By utilizing the grating couplers to couple light in and out from the chip, the designed microring resonators have been tested. The experimental results of microring resonators show that an extinction ratio of 12 dB and a quality factor of 11,200 can be achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is thus far the smallest microring resonator ever demonstrated at this wavelength.

Abstract:In this paper, a resonant system is demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator wafer to achieve tunable Fano resonances. In this system, the Fano resonance originates from the interference of two beams resonant in the microring resonator. The shapes of the Fano resonances are tunable through controlling the phase difference of the two beams. Both large slope and high extinction ratio (ER) are obtained when the phase difference is 0.5π or 1.5π. Experimental results show that Fano resonances with steep slope and ER over 20 dB are achieved in the whole free spectral range by controlling the microheaters to meet the phase condition.
Tunable fano resonances at 2 μm waveband based on a single microring resonator

Abstract:Development of silicon photonic devices for the 2 μm waveband is urgent since the 2 μm waveband has been considered as a potential communication window for next-generation optical communications. Asymmetric Fano resonances are very promising in the development of devices such as optical switches, sensors, and modulators for the 2 μm waveband. In this paper, a Fano resonance at the 2 μm waveband is theoretically realized by using a silicon-based microring resonator and the thermo-optic effect is employed to tune it. Utilizing this single microring resonator structure instead of the present coupled microring resonator structures, we achieve the Fano resonance with an extinction ratio of 30.5 dB and a slope ratio of 69.3 dB/nm at the 2 μm waveband. The metal heater and graphene heater are designed and optimized to achieve the Fano tuning. The thermal-optical tuning efficiencies are 0.46 nm/mW, 0.61 nm/mW and 1 nm/mW for the metal heater, the metal heater with air adiabatic slots, and the graphene heater, respectively. This work provides an effective scheme for the formation and tuning of the Fano resonance at the 2 μm waveband, which is conducive to the development of devices and optical communication systems at the 2 μm waveband.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable broadband photonic radio frequency (RF) phase shifter based on a silicon microring resonator. This scheme utilizes the thermal nonlinear effect of the silicon microring to change the electrical phase of the RF signal with a wide tuning range. A prototype of the phase shifter is experimentally demonstrated for a 40-GHz signal with a 0-4.6-rad tuning range.

Abstract:In this work, we have analyzed, fabricated and demonstrated concentric micro-ring resonators in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structure for enhanced transmission notches. The operation principles of the concentric ring resonators are studied by time-domain coupled-mode theory. Directional coupling between concentric rings offers another freedom in designing deep notch optical filters and ultra-sensitive biosensors. The finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulations have shown the improvement of the notch depth, evenly distributed mode field and the effect of the resonance shift. The device is demonstrated in silicon-on-insulator structure. Transmission notch depth improvement of ~ 15dB is demonstrated for the 21-20.02-μm-radius double-ring structure comparing with the single 21-μm-radius ring.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrated a thermally tunable ring reflector, which is made up of a Y-branch splitter and ring resonator on SOI platform using a CMOS-photonics technology. The results show good reflectivity which can up to be 90 % near the 1550 nm. The reflective response is successfully tuned by one free spectral range through thermo-optic effect with a tuning efficiency of 5.3 mW/nm. We also discuss its applications in silicon hybrid lasers.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact integrated flexible-grid 1 × 2 wavelength-selective switch is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with nine reconfigurable add-drop silicon microring resonators. Using thermal tuning, the transmission spectra of silicon microring resonators are coherently combined to provide adjustable bandwidths as desired. The operation principle and detailed analysis of the designed device are presented. Calculation results show the bandwidth tuning for the spectrum with the large bandwidth varies from 0.56 to 4.09 nm and the bandwidth tuning for the spectrum with the moderate bandwidth ranges from 0.38 to 2.64 nm. The integrated flexible-grid 1 × 2 wavelength-selective switch with the maximum bandwidth tunability has a maximum crosstalk of -11.5 dB.

Abstract:A widely tunable semiconductor laser based on double half-wave-coupled rectangular ring resonators is designed and simulated. By employing the Vernier effect between the rectangular ring resonators, a large tuning range of 40nm is achieved, while the corresponding threshold gain difference and the SMSR is 4.5cm−1 and 46dB, respectively.

Abstract:Reconfigurable silicon ring resonators are critical components in integrated photonics and have significant applications in various fields, including optical switching and microwave processing. In this study, we propose a novel design of resonance and linewidth tunable all-pass ring filters, which exhibit a free spectral range (FSR) of 6 nm, a loaded quality factor (Q) of 5116, a bias voltage lower than 12V, and a resonance tuning range of 1.2 nm. The proposed device operates based on micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology and is implemented using silicon photonics.

Abstract:A widely wavelength tunable semiconductor laser based on two cascaded half-wave-coupled rectangular ring resonators is demonstrated. Vernier effect between two rectangular rings with perimeter of 281 and 305 mu m is employed to enlarge the tuning range. Simple fabrication process is used with all active waveguides. No epitaxial regrowth, grating, or high-resolution lithography is needed. By adjusting the injection currents applied to the cascaded rectangular rings synchronously, wavelength tuning of 35 channels with 100 GHz spacing is achieved with side mode suppression ratio up to 40.5 dB.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate resonance-splitting and enhanced notch as a result of the mutual mode coupling in silicon ring resonator. Dense wavelength conversions, wavelength multicasting and optical up-converter are demonstrated in the split silicon ring resonator. A temporal differentiator and format conversion from NRZ to AMI are demonstrated utilizing the filtering effect of ring resonator. Photonic phase shifter and delay line are demonstrated utilizing the phase shift of ring resonator.

Abstract:An integrated ultra-high-resolution ratio-metric wavelength monitor (RMWM) with compact size based on slope tunable Fano resonance is demonstrated on silicon. The Fano resonance is generated by adding an asymmetric microring inside and coupling with the outer ring to produce a nonlinear phase shift. The slope tunability is achieved by controlling the microheaters to adjust the phase condition. Two asymmetric embedded microring resonators (AEMR) are functioned as edge filters and designed to achieve an "X-type" spectral response in a particular wavelength range. An ultra-high resolution of 0.8 pm in a 0.47 nm wide wavelength range is experimentally demonstrated. This device could be applied in on-chip high-sensitivity wavelength monitoring sensing. Abstract:An integrated dual-ring ratio-metric wavelength monitor (DR-RMWM) with ultra-high wavelength resolution and compact size is demonstrated. Two microrings are used as the edge filters and designed to achieve an "X-type" spectral response in a particular wavelength range. It is fabricated with the CMOS-compatible fabrication process on the silicon-on-insulator. The measured wavelength resolution is 5 pm in a 1.2 nm wide wavelength range. By tuning the resonant wavelength thermally, the functional wavelength range can be shifted. The DR-RMWM can find applications in wavelength monitoring systems, especially the on-chip systems.
