Abstract:An ultra-compact silicon bandpass filter with wide bandwidth tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter architecture is based on a multiple micro-ring resonator-cascaded structure. A wide bandwidth tunability (from 75 to 300 GHz) can be achieved by controlling the resonant frequency of the microring resonators when a good shape factor (0.24-0.44) is held. The filter has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz). The center wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers linearly. The footprint is only 0.053 mm(2). (C) 2016 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Two ultra-compact silicon bandpass filters are proposed and partly experimentally presented. Both of them have wide bandwidth tunability. Based on the first filter (filter-I), the second filter (filter-II) was designed and has large Free Spectrum Range (FSR). Two filters share the same architecture (matrix architecture), consisting two groups of micro-ring resonator-cascade structures (simply called as micro-ring resonator in this letter). Using this matrix architecture, a wide bandwidth tunability from 75 to 300 GHz can be achieved in filter-I. Based on matrix architecture, double micro-ring resonator (MRR) were adopted and Vernier effect was used in design. It is showed both in simulation and experiment that the FSR of filter-II exceeded 35 nm (around 40 nm in simulation), which is much larger than the FSR of single MRR. Filter-II’s tunability of center wavelength in simulation covers most wavelength from 1530 to 1570 nm. The comparison of bandwidth tunability between filter-I and II reveals that adding paths in matrix architecture may be more effective than adopting high-order micro-ring resonators.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber structured programmable optical bandpass filter (waveshaper) based on a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating and a digital-controlled thermal array. The key parameters of this filter such as the number of transmission channels, passing bandwidth per channel, central wavelength as well as the channel spacing can be reconfigured independently and flexibly by a program-controlled circuit. We have achieved in experiments the tunable passing bandwidth ranging from < 0.04 to 1.55 nm, adjustable central wavelength ranging from 1,547.16 to 1,558.64 nm, and a minimum wavelength spacing of 0.91 nm. The insertion loss of the whole device and the sideband rejection ratio are about 1.76 and 28 dB, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scalable bandwidth-tunable bandpass filter on silicon. Its spectrum is combined by that of four channels and each channel is formed by two cascaded micro-ring resonators (MRRs). By tuning the center wavelength spacing of the eight MRRs and the phase shifts of four channels, a wide bandwidth tuning range from 37.5 GHz to 227.5 GHz can be achieved with a shape factor between 0.2 and 0.73 and an in-band ripple less than 1 dB. By comparing with the performance of three-channel and two-channel structures, we can draw the conclusion that inducing more channels can effectively improve the bandwidth tunability. The filter also has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz) and small footprint (0.12 mm(2)).

Abstract:A set of miniaturized dual-band bandpass filters is presented with a quadruple-folded substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) implemented into each design. They were fabricated using standard low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. The bandwidths of both passbands of the filters are adjustable independently by changing the geometrical parameters of the coupling structure. Two filter samples are demonstrated with central frequencies located at 2.4/5.2 and 2.4/5.7 GHz, respectively, and their measured S-parameters agree well with the simulated ones.

Abstract:A bandwidth-tunable optical passband filter based on graphene–silicon waveguide is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with four triple series-coupled microring resonators. By changing the Fermi level of graphene to lead to the variation of the modal effective index, the transmission spectra of triple series-coupled microring resonators can be coherently combined to provide the adjustable bandwidth as desired. A detailed analysis of the designed device is presented. Numerical simulations show that the effective bandwidth tuning range from 2.70 to 6.30 nm can be obtained when each microring resonator is independently controlled. With the maximum bandwidth tunability, the designed tunable filter has a minimum extinction ratio larger than 92.35 dB.

Abstract:A broadband tunable silicon filter has been demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. The device is based on the loop of multimode anti-symmetric waveguide Bragg grating. A wide bandwidth tunability about 1.455 THz (0.117-1.572 THz) is achieved. The device, functions like a ring, can realize the bandwidth tunable of the drop port and the through port. And, its feature has simultaneous wavelength tuning and no free space ranges limitation. A high out-of-band contrast of 30 dB is achieved with a bandwidth of 1.572 THz (Δλ = 13 nm). The out-of-band contrast is 18 dB at the minimum bandwidth 0.117 THz (Δλ = 1.0 nm).

Abstract:One miniaturized multilayer dual-band bandpass filter (BPF) is developed using standard low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. The filter makes use of four double-folded substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) resonators. Two sets of coupling paths between the source and load are implemented to generate dual-band responses. Utilizing this method, the two passbands can operate at independent frequencies and the bandwidth can be easily controlled. High isolation is obtained between two passbands, and two pairs of transmission zeros close to the passband edges are generated by source-load coupling, resulting in high skirt-selectivity. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results of the filter sample is obtained, with its high electrical performance validated.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a photonic microwave transversal filter with a multiple-fiber resonator formed by cascaded fiber Bragg gratings. The filter-free spectral range is extended via the Vernier effect, which can increase the filter rejection bandwidth and suppress the unwanted periodic passbands. Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-narrow-band optical filter based on a hybrid-microsphere consisting of a coated SiO2 microsphere. As compared to the SiO2 microsphere, the hybrid-microsphere produces a quality factor of >10(8), a transmission spectrum bandwidth of <1 pm, and an increased side-mode suppression ratio. The microsphere surface roughness and whispering gallery mode (WGM) transmission spectra are measured experimentally. A 0.01 nm bandwidth, single-wavelength fiber laser output is achieved with a tunable wavelength, using the SiO2 microsphere as the mode selector. The optical field distribution and WGM transmission spectrum of the hybrid-microsphere with different coating parameters are theoretically investigated by the finite-difference time-domain method.

Abstract:A method to extend spectral range of tunable optical filter is proposed in this paper. Two same tunable Fabry-Perot filters and an additional tunable filter with different free spectral range are cascaded to extend spectral range and reduce sidelobes. Over 400 nm of free spectral range and 4 nm of full width at half maximum of the filter were achieved. Design procedure and simulation are described in detail. An experimental 3-stage tunable Fabry-Perot filter with visible and infrared spectra is demonstrated. The experimental results and the theoretical analysis are presented in detail to verify this method. The results revealed that a compact and extended tunable spectral range of Fabry-Perot filter can be easily attainable by this method.

Abstract:Broadband filters with sharp transition edges are important elements in diverse applications, including Raman and fluorescence spectral analysis, wideband wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), and multi-octave interferometry. While the multi-layer thin-film interference broadband filter has been widely applied in various free-space optical systems, its integrated counterpart is still far from mature, which is also highly desired for constructing chip-scale miniature optical modules. In this article, we design, fabricate, and characterize an integrated broadband filter with sharp transition edges. An adiabatic coupler based on silicon nitride (SiN) and silicon oxynitride (SiON) composite waveguide is employed here. Long-pass, short-pass, band-pass, and band-stop filters can be realized in a single design of the composite waveguide coupler for a specific wavelength range, with only a difference in the SiN taper waveguide width. Experimental results with a roll-off value of larger than 0.7 dB nm−1 and a 15 dB extinction ratio (ER) are presented.

Abstract:We propose a high-order microring filter structure based on the Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) platform for flattening filtering. This filter structure can achieve a box-like spectral response with large free-spectral-range (FSR) and high out-of-band extinction ratio (ER), which can be widely used in various fields, especially in the wavelength division multiplexing. The filter consists of two or more rings which are connected in series, with Ti electrodes added on them for thermal tuning. According to the proposed requirements of spectral bandwidth and FSR, the physical dimensions of the high-order microring filter structure can be calculated based on theoretical formulas, and we optimize them for better performance. The relationship of the coupling coefficients of each coupling zone is calculated based on the Butterworth spectral responses. Result shows that the higher-order filter has steeper rise-fall edges and a flatter top, and can be designed to achieve a larger FSR. The FSR of the fourth-order microring filter can be designed to 78.4 nm, with ER of 12.6 dB, and the insertion loss of 1.1 dB. The fluctuations at the top of the box-like spectra caused by the fabrication deviations can be compensated by applying voltages to Ti electrodes, which can change the effective refractive index of the waveguide.

Abstract:Optical filters are essential parts of advanced optical communication and sensing systems. Among them, the ones with an ultrawide free spectral range (FSR) are especially critical. They are promising to provide access to numerous wavelength channels highly desired for large-capacity optical transmission and multipoint multiparameter sensing. Present schemes for wide-FSR filters either suffer from limited cavity length or poor fabrication tolerance or impose an additional active-tuning control requirement. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a filter that features FSR-free operation capability, subnanometer optical bandwidth, and acceptable fabrication tolerance. Only one single deep dip within a record-large waveband ( S + C + L band) is observed by appropriately designing a side-coupled Bragg-grating-assisted Fabry–Perot filter, which has been applied as the basic sensing unit for both the refractive index and temperature measurement. Five such basic units are also cascaded in series to demonstrate a multichannel filter. This work provides a new insight to design FSR-free filters and opens up a possibility of flexible large-capacity integration using more wavelength channels, which will greatly advance integrated photonics in optical communication and sensing.

Abstract:A filter design based on Vernier microrings and wideband directional couplers is proposed for ASE noise suppression in next generation DCI applications. We demonstrate a 40 nm FSR-free filter with > 20.5 dB average ER and 3dB-BW of 75 GHz, achieving wavelength-independent performance and full tunability with a maximum tuning temperature of 75 K.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact integrated flexible-grid 1 × 2 wavelength-selective switch is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with nine reconfigurable add-drop silicon microring resonators. Using thermal tuning, the transmission spectra of silicon microring resonators are coherently combined to provide adjustable bandwidths as desired. The operation principle and detailed analysis of the designed device are presented. Calculation results show the bandwidth tuning for the spectrum with the large bandwidth varies from 0.56 to 4.09 nm and the bandwidth tuning for the spectrum with the moderate bandwidth ranges from 0.38 to 2.64 nm. The integrated flexible-grid 1 × 2 wavelength-selective switch with the maximum bandwidth tunability has a maximum crosstalk of -11.5 dB.

Abstract:A novel and simple technique to realize reconfigurable microwave photonic transversal filter is presented. In the proposed method, a multi-wavelength source and a dispersive medium are applied to achieve multiple taps; and an electro-optic ceramic material-based variable gain tilt filter (VGTF) is utilized to control the tap weights of the filter. The VGTF is computer-controlled via a universal serial bus interface, which enables real-time reconfiguration of the filter. Filter responses with different passband bandwidth and different sidelobe suppression can be achieved. Compared with previous approaches, the given method features in less optical components involved and faster response speed. A three-tap reconfigurable filter with sub-millisecond response speed is experimentally demonstrated.
