Abstract:We present a 10-GHz granularity reconfigurable WDM superchannel filter in a photonic integrated circuit. The filter uses a ring-resonator-assisted tapped-delay-line topology. An example configuration with two ring resonators and four tapped delay lines provides a spectral filter with a flat-top passband, a roll-off factor of 8%, a tunable central wavelength, and a selectable free spectral range, i.e., 2x or 4x the 3-dB passband bandwidth. The device was fabricated in a silicon nitride (Si3N4/SiO2) waveguide with a chip area of 0.36 cm(2) and has a fiber-to-fiber insertion loss of 5 dB. We experimentally demonstrate the filter for selecting a subchannel from a WDM superchannel comprising 10-GHz sub-channels with 10% and zero guard bands. Owing to the infinite impulse responses of ring resonators, this filter requires a significantly smaller area and fewer tuning elements compared with designs based on only tapped-delay-line finite-impulse-response filters. This paper contributes to the creation of chip-scale all-optical WDM superchannel transceivers and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs).

Abstract:We present a Nyquist-filtering optical (de)multiplexer using a ring resonator-assisted interferometer circuit. It features a near-rectangular passband spectrum, scalable port count, and can be designed with sub-GHz spectral resolution. The circuit can be constructed using ordinary passive photonic-integrated circuit building blocks. In contrast to its counterparts using tapped-delay-line circuit topologies, this circuit has a chip area two-orders-of-magnitude smaller. The results of this study show the potential for realizing high-spectral-efficiency multicarrier transceivers and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers in a fully integrated form.

Abstract:We demonstrate an eight-channel reconfigurable optical filter on a silicon chip. It consists of cascaded microring resonators and integrated compact heaters. With an embedded Mach-Zehnder (MZ) arm coupling to a microring resonator, the important parameters of a filter such as center frequency, extinction ratio and bandwidth can be controlled simultaneously for purposes of filtering, routing and spectral shaping. Thus our device could potentially be useful in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and radio frequency arbitrary waveform generation (RFAWG). Multichannel filter response was successfully tuned to match the International Telecommunication Unit (ITU) grid with 50, 100 and 200 GHz in channel spacing. Programmable channel selectivity was demonstrated by heating the MZ arm, and continuous adjustment of through-port extinction ratio from 0 dB to 27 dB was achieved. Meanwhile, the 3 dB bandwidth in the drop port changed from 0.12 nm to 0.16 nm. The device had an ultra-compact footprint (1200 microm x 100 microm) excluding the metal leads and contact pads, making it suitable for large scale integration.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scalable bandwidth-tunable bandpass filter on silicon. Its spectrum is combined by that of four channels and each channel is formed by two cascaded micro-ring resonators (MRRs). By tuning the center wavelength spacing of the eight MRRs and the phase shifts of four channels, a wide bandwidth tuning range from 37.5 GHz to 227.5 GHz can be achieved with a shape factor between 0.2 and 0.73 and an in-band ripple less than 1 dB. By comparing with the performance of three-channel and two-channel structures, we can draw the conclusion that inducing more channels can effectively improve the bandwidth tunability. The filter also has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz) and small footprint (0.12 mm(2)).

Abstract:A channel-selectable optical link based on a silicon microring resonator is proposed and demonstrated.This optical link consists of the wavelength-tunable microring modulators and the filters,defined on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform.With a p-i-n junction embedded in the microring modulator,light at the resonant wavelength of the ring resonator is modulated.The 2nd-order microring add-drop filter routes the modulated light.The channel selectivity is demonstrated by heating the microrings.With a thermal tuning efficiency of 5.9mW/nm,the filter drop port response was successfully tuned with 0.8nm channel spacing.We also show that modulation can be achieved in these channels.This device aims to offer flexibility and increase the bandwidth usage efficiency in optical interconnection.

Abstract:We demonstrate an integrated reconfigurable wavelength division multiplexing receiver on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The receiver is composed of a 1 x 8 thermally tunable microring resonator filter and Ge-Si photodetectors. With low thermal tuning powers the channel allocation of the receiver can be reconfigured with high accuracy and flexibility. The thermal tuning efficiency is approximately 8 mW nm(-1). We show eight-channel configurations with channel spacing of 100 GHz and 50 GHz and a configuration in which all eight channels cover an entire free spectral range of the ring with uniform channel spacing of 1.2 nm. Each channel can receive high-quality signals with a data rate of up to 13.5 Gb s(-1); thus an aggregate data rate higher than 100 Gb s(-1) can be achieved.

Abstract:An ultra-compact silicon bandpass filter with wide bandwidth tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter architecture is based on a multiple micro-ring resonator-cascaded structure. A wide bandwidth tunability (from 75 to 300 GHz) can be achieved by controlling the resonant frequency of the microring resonators when a good shape factor (0.24-0.44) is held. The filter has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz). The center wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers linearly. The footprint is only 0.053 mm(2). (C) 2016 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Two ultra-compact silicon bandpass filters are proposed and partly experimentally presented. Both of them have wide bandwidth tunability. Based on the first filter (filter-I), the second filter (filter-II) was designed and has large Free Spectrum Range (FSR). Two filters share the same architecture (matrix architecture), consisting two groups of micro-ring resonator-cascade structures (simply called as micro-ring resonator in this letter). Using this matrix architecture, a wide bandwidth tunability from 75 to 300 GHz can be achieved in filter-I. Based on matrix architecture, double micro-ring resonator (MRR) were adopted and Vernier effect was used in design. It is showed both in simulation and experiment that the FSR of filter-II exceeded 35 nm (around 40 nm in simulation), which is much larger than the FSR of single MRR. Filter-II’s tunability of center wavelength in simulation covers most wavelength from 1530 to 1570 nm. The comparison of bandwidth tunability between filter-I and II reveals that adding paths in matrix architecture may be more effective than adopting high-order micro-ring resonators.

Abstract:In this article, a design of integrated flexible-grid mode- and wavelength-selective switch consisting of silicon-based symmetric Y-junctions and double-series coupled microring resonators with interferometric couplers is introduced in detail. Using thermal tuning, the described device is capable of routing each mode and wavelength signal from the input port to any output port flexibly and independently, forming different bandwidths as needed. For fixed field coupling coefficients, the device can support multiple different wavelength-channel spacings. A silicon-based flexible-grid 1 x 6 mode- and wavelength-selective switch is carefully designed and analyzed as an example. The designed device works for two mode channels and three wavelength channels. The wavelength-channel spacing can vary from 0.10 to 0.80 nm and the 3-dB bandwidth changes from 0.08 to 2.00 nm. When the wavelength-channel spacing is set to be 0.80 nm, the extinction ratio is greater than 50.90 dB and the crosstalk is less than -15.36 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of integrated flexible-grid wavelength-selective switch composed of reconfigurable add-drop silicon microring resonators with interferometric couplers is described in detail. Owing to tunable interferometric couplers, the proposed device is capable of realizing an increase in adjustable channel spacing for a given field coupling coefficient. By carefully controlling the path phase differences and tunable interferometric couplers, the transmission spectra of adjacent channels can be selectively combined to form adjustable bandwidths as desired. As an example, an integrated flexible-grid 1 x 2 wavelength-selective switch is designed and theoretically analyzed. The channel spacing can increase from 0.1 to 0.8 nm. When the channel spacing is selected to be 0.8 nm, the bandwidth varies from 0.36 to 2.91 nm and a minimum extinction ratio of 14.8 dB is obtained.

Abstract:We demonstrate a robust, compact and low-loss four-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) filter based on cascaded double-ring resonators (2RR) in silicon. The flat-top channel response obtained by the second-order filter design is exploited to compensate for the detrimental effects of local fabrication variations and their associated phase errors on the ring-based filter response. Full wafer-scale characterization of a cascaded, four-channel 2RR filter with channel spacing of 300 GHz shows an average worst-case insertion loss below 1.5 dB and an average worst-case crosstalk below -18 dB across the wafer, representing a substantial improvement over a first-order based ring (1RR) design. The robust 2RR filter design enables the use of a simple collective thermal tuning mechanism to compensate for global fabrication variations as well as for global temperature fluctuations of the WDM filter, the WDM laser source, or both. Highly uniform collective heating is demonstrated using integrated doped silicon heaters. The compact filter footprint of less than 50×50 μm2 per channel enables straightforward scaling of the WDM channel count to 8 channels and beyond. Such low-loss collectively tuned ring-based WDM filters can prove beneficial in scaling the bandwidth density of chip-level silicon optical interconnects.

Abstract:We present a 1×4 reconfigurable demultiplexer based on cascaded silicon microring resonators. The device is fabricated on a 0.18μm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. A homogeneous doped silicon slab heater is proposed and fabricated directly on the slab region of the microring resonator for thermal tuning. The flows of the heating currents in the heaters are parallel to the ring waveguide through the heavily doped slab regions located on both sides of the ring waveguide without through the waveguide core regions. The proposed doped heaters are experimentally verified with low-voltage operation and tuning efficiency of ∼77pm/mW. Without any tuning or trimming, predicted average channel spacing distribution in the whole free spectral range (FSR) is demonstrated. Full reconfigurability is also demonstrated in the demultiplexer with channel spacing of 2nm (250GHz) and 1nm (125GHz), corresponding to channel isolation of less than −21dB and −16dB, respectively. Such a low-voltage operation and reconfigurable demultiplexer is suitable for on-chip optical interconnect.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate resonance-splitting and enhanced notch as a result of the mutual mode coupling in silicon ring resonator. Dense wavelength conversions, wavelength multicasting and optical up-converter are demonstrated in the split silicon ring resonator. A temporal differentiator and format conversion from NRZ to AMI are demonstrated utilizing the filtering effect of ring resonator. Photonic phase shifter and delay line are demonstrated utilizing the phase shift of ring resonator.

Abstract:A compact silicon-based four-port coarse wavelength-division multiplexer (CWDM) with a footprint of 200×200 μm2 and an insertion loss of ~2dB is demonstrated. This configuration can support each laser power of over 100mW without inducing silicon nonlinear effects. The design eliminates the need for interference in multiplexing different wavelength channels, resulting in significant fabrication tolerance and eliminating the requirement for phase shifters. The crucial components, such as power splitters/combiners and crossings, are designed and optimized using genetic-algorithm-based deep neural network (GDNN) inverse design methodologies to achieve minimal loss and broad bandwidth.

Abstract:We demonstrate a silicon-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-embedded microring array consisting of four wavelength channels. The embedded MZI in each microring resonator (MRR) works as an ON/OFF key of the resonance, and can offer larger operating wavelength range. The footprint of the core elements is only $180.6\,\,\mu \text{m}\,\,\times 476.1\,\,\mu \text{m}$ . The transmission performances of four wavelength channels keep with good consistency within a 35.2-nm-wide wavelength range. The insertion loss of each channel is less than 3.05 dB. Its rising response time of the ON/OFF status transition is about $4.8~\mu \text{s}$ . Moreover, since the array does not require the free spectral range (FSR)-alignment and the on-chip thermal crosstalk is slight, the hitless wavelength selection can be realized simply without any electronic control assistance. Our experiment results indicate that such compact, and scalable array with the function of easily-implemented hitless wavelength selection may provide another solution for large-scale wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact integrated flexible-grid 1 × 2 wavelength-selective switch is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with nine reconfigurable add-drop silicon microring resonators. Using thermal tuning, the transmission spectra of silicon microring resonators are coherently combined to provide adjustable bandwidths as desired. The operation principle and detailed analysis of the designed device are presented. Calculation results show the bandwidth tuning for the spectrum with the large bandwidth varies from 0.56 to 4.09 nm and the bandwidth tuning for the spectrum with the moderate bandwidth ranges from 0.38 to 2.64 nm. The integrated flexible-grid 1 × 2 wavelength-selective switch with the maximum bandwidth tunability has a maximum crosstalk of -11.5 dB.
