Abstract:Prof. Hatsujiro Hashimoto was a world-leader in electron microscopy and made great achievements in related research fields. He was also an expert in Chinese history and culture and was one of the closest friends of the Chinese Electron Microscopy Society. In October 1978, a group of Japanese scholars headed by 53-year old Prof. H. Hashimoto (who was then director of the Japan Society of Electron Microscope) and T. Taoka (who was then vice director) visited Beijing, Shanghai and other places and initiated the long history of China–Japan friendship within the field of microscopy. At the invitation of the Japanese Society of Electron Microscope, the Chinese delegation participated in an academic conference to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Japanese Society of Electron Microscope in May 1979 and visited the relevant laboratories and electron microscope manufacturing plants. One year later, in September 1979, 31 initiators including Qian Linzhao (1906–1999), Ke Jun (metal physicist, 1917–2017) and Guo Kexin (crystallography, 1923–2006) submitted the Report for the Application for Establishment of Chinese Electron Microscope Society to the Chinese Association for Science and Technology. Approved by the Chinese Physical Society, the Chinese Electron Microscope Society was thus established. President Qian Linzhao and vice-Presidents Guo Kexin, Ke Jun and Huang Lanyou announced the formal establishment of the society on 1 November 1980 in Chengdu, while holding the first national electron microscope academic seminar. Prof. Hashimoto participated in the Chengdu meeting for the Chinese Society. He wrote: ‘Back in November 1980, Chinese scholars gathered in Chengdu to hold the commemorative ceremony for the foundation of the Chinese Electron Microscope Society. At that time, Prof. Guo Kexin as the first vice president, together with the president Prof. Qian Linzhao and vice president Prof. Ke Jun, made great efforts in establishing the society. I was very honored to have attended the ceremony. The scene reminded me of the rally of heroes 1760 years ago in the Three-Kingdoms era in China, so I offered the following poem:
