Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, single-scan ultrafast laser inscription and performance of mid-infrared waveguiding in IG2 chalcogenide glass in the type-I and type-II configurations. The waveguiding properties at 4550 nm are studied as a function of pulse energy, repetition rate, and additionally separation between the two inscribed tracks for type-II waveguides. Propagation losses of similar to 1.2 dB/cm in a type-II waveguide and similar to 2.1 dB/cm in a type-I waveguide have been demonstrated. For the latter type, there is an inverse relation between the refractive index contrast and the deposited surface energy density. Notably, type-I and type-II waveguiding have been observed at 4550 nm within and between the tracks of two-track structures. In addition, although type-II waveguiding has been observed in the near infrared (1064 nm) and mid infrared (4550 nm) in two-track structures, type-I waveguiding within each track has only been observed in the mid infrared. Abstract:We present the realization of mid-infrared waveguide by ultrafast laser inscription technique in a chalcogenide glass. Our approach is based on multicore waveguide that consists in an alignment on a mesh of positive refractive index channels placed parallel to each other. Two different meshes are investigated with different refractive index contrasts between the channel and the glass matrix. A detailed analysis of the performances at a wavelength of 4.5 $\mu$m shows propagation losses of 0.20 $\pm$ 0.05 dB/cm and coupling efficiencies higher than 60 %.

Abstract:In this Letter, waveguide beam splitters (1 x 3) with type I modifications are fabricated in a LiNbO3 crystal by femtosecond laser direct writing. The influence of the relative positions of three sub-waveguides on power splitting ratios are investigated in detail and the corresponding output intensities as functions of the relative positions in the numerical simulation are plotted, which are in good accordance with the experimental results. In addition, the waveguide beam splitter with a 1:1:1 splitting ratio is fabricated by changing the relative widths of the three branch-waveguides. Guiding performances at 532 nm are measured and analyzed by a typical end-face coupling system. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the beam splitting ratio of the waveguide splitter can be precisely regulated by the positions and widths of the sub-waveguides.

Abstract:Visible + 1.54 mu m laser/long-wave infrared dichroic beamsplitters, which separate the incident spectrum into visible light, laser and longwave infrared light, take an important role in multichannel imaging spectrum technique. The choice of substrates and coating materials was discussed. Then the coating design of reflecting the visible(400 similar to 800nm) and laser (1540nm) light while transmitting the longwave infrared( 8 similar to 12 mu m) spectrum was analysed, and the beamsplitter was manufactured by e-gun evaporation. The measured reflectivity and transmittance of the corresponding channel are all above 94% and the dichroic beanisplitters has been used in practical optical system successfully.

Abstract:Short-wave/long-wave infrared dichroic beam splitters take an important role in two-band infrared imaging optical systems. The choice of substrate and coating materials are discussed. Ge, ZnSe and YbF_3 were chosen as film materials and ZnSe as substrate; The coating reflecting the shortwave infrared light while transmiting the longwave infrared (8 ～ 12 μm ) light is analyzed, and the beam splitter is manufactured by electronic-beam evaporation. The measured reflectivity and transmittance of corresponding band are all above 93%. Such dichroic beam splitters have been successfully applied to the actual optical system.

Abstract:Mid-infrared photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that combine on-chip light sources with other optical components constitute a key enabler for applications such as chemical sensing, light detection, ranging, and free-space communications. In this paper, we report the monolithic integration of interband cascade lasers emitting at 3.24 µm with passive, high-index-contrast waveguides made of chalcogenide glasses. Output from the chalcogenide waveguides exhibits pulsed peak power up to 150 mW (without roll-over), threshold current density 280 A/cm2, and slope efficiency 100 mW/A at 300 K, with a lower bound of 38% efficiency for coupling between the two waveguides. These results represent an important step toward the realization of fully integrated mid-infrared PICs.

Abstract:A germanium-based platform with a large core-clad index contrast, germanium-on-silicon nitride waveguide, is demonstrated at mid-infrared wavelength. Simulations are performed to verify the feasibility of this structure. This structure is realized by first bonding a silicon-nitride-deposited germanium-on-silicon donor wafer onto a silicon substrate wafer, followed by the layer transfer approach to obtain germanium-on-silicon nitride structure, which is scalable to all wafer sizes. The misfit dislocations which initially form along the interface between germanium/silicon can be removed by chemical mechanical polishing after layer transfer process resulting in a high-quality germanium layer. At the mid-infrared wavelength of 3.8 μm, the germanium-on-silicon nitride waveguide has a propagation loss of 3.35 ± 0.5 dB/cm and a bend loss of 0.14 ± 0.01 dB/bend for a radius of 5 μm for the transverse-electric mode.

Abstract:With diameters close to the wavelength of the guided light, optical microfibers (MFs) can guide light with tight optical confinement, strong evanescent fields and manageable waveguide dispersion and have been widely investigated in the past decades for a variety of applications. Compared to silica MFs, which are ideal for working in visible and near-infrared regions, chalcogenide glass (ChG) MFs are promising for mid-infrared (mid-IR) optics, owing to their easy fabrication, broad-band transparency and high nonlinearity, and have been attracting increasing attention in applications ranging from near-field coupling and molecular sensing to nonlinear optics. Here, we review this emerging field, mainly based on its progress in the last decade. Starting from the high-temperature taper drawing technique for MF fabrication, we introduce basic mid-IR waveguiding properties of typical ChG MFs made of As2S3 and As2Se3. Then, we focus on ChG-MF-based passive optical devices, including optical couplers, resonators and gratings and active and nonlinear applications of ChG MFs for mid-IR Raman lasers, frequency combs and supercontinuum (SC) generation. MF-based spectroscopy and chemical/biological sensors are also introduced. Finally, we conclude the review with a brief summary and an outlook on future challenges and opportunities of ChG MFs.

Abstract:The authors describe the fabrication of buried waveguides in a highly nonlinear chalcogenide glass, gallium lanthanum sulfide, using focused femtosecond laser pulses. Through optical characterization of the waveguides, they have proposed a formation mechanism and provide comparisons to previous work. Tunneling has been identified as the dominant nonlinear absorption mechanism in the formation of the waveguides. Single mode guidance at 633 nm has been demonstrated. The writing parameters for the minimum propagation loss of 1.47 dB/cm are 0.36 uJ pulse energy and 50 um/s scanning speed.

Abstract:We report on femtosecond laser writing of single mode optical waveguides in chalcogenide Gallium Lanthanum Sulphide (GLS) glass. A multiscan fabrication process was employed to create waveguides with symmetric single mode guidance and low insertion losses at 800 nm wavelength, compatible with Ti:Sapphire ultrafast lasers. {\mu}Raman and X-Ray microanalysis were used to elucidate the origin of the laser-induced refractive index change in GLS. Nonlinear refractive index measurements of the waveguides were performed by finding the optical switching parameters of a directional coupler, demonstrating that the nonlinear properties were preserved, evidencing that GLS is a promising platform for laser-written integrated nonlinear photonics.

Solution-processed chalcogenide glass for integrated single-mode mid-infrared waveguides

Abstract:Chalcogenide glass materials exhibit a variety of optical properties that make them desirable for near- and mid-infrared communications and sensing applications. However, processing limitations for these photorefractive materials have made the direct integration of waveguides with sources or detectors challenging. Here we demonstrate the viability of two complementary soft lithography methods for patterning and integrating chalcogenide glass waveguides from solution. One method, micro-molding in capillaries (MIMIC), is shown to fabricate multi-mode As(2)S(3) waveguides which are directly integrated with quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). In a second method, we demonstrate the ability of micro-transfer molding (µTM), to produce arrays of single mode rib waveguides (2.5 µm wide and 4.5 µm high) over areas larger than 6 cm(2) while maintaining edge roughness below 5.1 nm. These methods form a suite of processes that can be applied to chalcogenide solutions to create a diverse array of mid-IR optical and photonic structures ranging from <5 to 10's of µm in dimension.

Abstract:Zirconium fluoride (ZBLAN) glass, the standard material used in fiber-based mid-infrared photonics, has been re-designed to enable the fabrication of high index-contrast low-loss waveguides via femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate that in contrast to pure ZBLAN, a positive index change of close to 10 −2 can be induced in hybrid zirconium/hafnium (Z/HBLAN) glasses during ultrafast laser inscription and show that this can be explained by an electron cloud distortion effect that is driven by the existence of two glass formers with contrasting polarizability. High numerical aperture (NA) type-I waveguides that support a well confined 3.1 μm wavelength mode with a mode-field diameter (MFD) as small as 12 μm have successfully been fabricated. These findings open the door for the fabrication of mid-infrared integrated photonic devices that can readily be pigtailed to existing ZBLAN fibers.

Abstract:Chalcogenide glass (ChG) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is one of the key components in monolithic infrared fiber lasers and sensors. However, its effective fabrication using direct femtosecond laser writing is still seldom reported, owing to complications attributable to ChG. In this study, a double-D shaped ChG fiber was used to fabricate FBGs with high reflectivity (a 20.5 dB dip in the transmittance) and narrow 3-dB bandwidth (164 pm) using direct femtosecond laser writing. The high sensitivity to laser powers of the direct writing of the ChG FBG was revealed and understood from the perspective of the low laser-induced damage threshold of ChGs. Lower-order reflectance of the directly written FBGs at the mid-infrared wavelength region were quantitively predicted to have higher reflectivity. These results provide a robust method of writing FBGs with arbitrary periods in ChG fibers, establishing a solid foundation for the development of infrared fiber lasers and fiber sensors.

Abstract:This study reports the successful fabrication of high-positive refractive index change waveguides, exceeding 0.02 in fluoride glasses, marking a significant advancement in integrated optical components for visible to mid-infrared applications. This research overcomes longstanding challenges in direct-write photonics and therefore enables the realization of true 3D geometries in optical elements, access to novel visible lasing wavelengths typically suppressed in high phonon hosts, and the miniaturization of mid-infrared optical devices. The investigation into the waveguides' origin attributes the exceptionally high index change to material densification driven by the migration of specific elements, mainly barium, within the glass composition. These waveguides, characterized by low insertion losses, and highly customizable V-numbers evidenced by multimode operation at 3.5 um, offers substantial potential for chip laser technology and the creation of advanced optical devices for sensing and spectroscopy.
