Abstract:Helical piles are an innovative pile type that is screwed into the ground. Current design methods for the axial capacity of helical piles are based on empirical installation torque or soil strength parameters. However, installation torque or soil strength parameters may not be readily available and uncertainties may arise when strength parameters are interpreted from the in situ geotechnical investigation. A direct method based on in situ investigation may be needed for the design of helical piles. Although Standard Penetration Test (SPT)-based methods are available for driven and cast-in-place piles, SPT-based method for helical piles has not been well established. This study was aimed to develop a SPT-based empirical method to estimate the axially compressive and tensile capacity of single-helix piles in sand. The ultimate capacity Q u was defined as the pile resistance at the axial displacement of 10% of helix diameter D ; however, the axial displacement of most compression tests was not enough to use the 10% D criterion, and for these cases (only compressive capacity), Chin's hyperbolic method was adopted to obtain Q u . A database of field load tests of single-helix piles, including cases in the literature and the load tests carried out in the present study, was created to cover various scales of helical piles and strengths of sandy soils. A simple statistical analysis was then conducted to establish a correlation between the axial capacities and the corresponding SPT blow counts. The analyses of the database showed that the proposed SPT method produced an improved prediction of the pile capacities than the methods from torque factors and soil strength parameters.
