Abstract:This paper reports the preparation of ultrafine CeO 2 particles by using frozen dehydrating method and urea decomposition method. The results are compared with that of sol gel method. It is found that reaction temperature(T r), ammonia concentration(C a) and calcination temperature(T c) significantly affect the particle size and the surface area of the product for frozen dehydrating method. TEM results show that gelatinized at 0℃, CeO 2 particles with an average particle size of 7nm and a surface area of 89m 2/g are obtained, while raising the gelatinization temperature to 25℃, the average size increases to 16nm and surface area decreases to 73m 2/g respectively. It can be explained that at higher temperature, the particles with high surface energy collide more frequently and are easy to aggregate hence the average particle size increases and surface area decreases. The ammonia concentration also affects the particle size of CeO 2. Too high an ammonia concentration wil give rise to larger particles. CeO 2 particles prepared by frozen dehydrating method have high surface activity and therefore are easy to aggregate; calcining at 400℃ would lead to sintering. CeO 2 prepared by urea decomposition method calcined at 400℃ for 2h is brick shaped and porous with an average particle diameter beyond 500nm, a high surface area of 127m 2/g and an average pore diameter of 2.1nm. XRD result shows that the product composition as prepared is Ce 2O(CO 3) 2·H 2O; IR spectrum confirms the existence of CO 2- 3. DTA analysis suggests that Ce 2O(CO 3) 2·H 2O first dehydrates to form Ce 2O(CO 3) 2 and then decomposes at 277℃ to form CeO 2. Comparing sol gel, frozen dehydrating and urea decomposition method, we can conclude that using sol gel method an average diameter around 10nm ultrafine CeO 2 can be obtained at mild condition. The disadvantage of this method is that organic materials and NO - 3 are not easy to remove. The CeO 2 particles prepared by frozen dehydrating method at low temperature are fine and homogeneous and contain no organic materials, but it is easy to sinter. Using urea decomposition method we can prepare porous CeO 2 with high surface area, but the particle size is over 500nm.
