Abstract:It was proved that for any v≡0 (mod 3) and v ≥63, there exist two resolvable Mendelsohn triple systems of order v intersecting in s triples if and only if s∈(0,1,…,t v-6,t v-4,t v }, where t v=v(v-1)/3 .

Abstract:Let SSR(v, 3) denote the set of all integer b* such that there exists a RTS(v, 3) with b* distinct triples. In this paper, we determine the set SSR(v, 3) for v ≡ 3 (mod 6) and v ≥ 3 with only five undecided cases. We establish that SSR(v, 3) = P(v, 3) for v ≡ 3 (mod 6), v ≥ 21 and v ≠ 33, 39 where P(v, 3) = {mv, mv + 4, mv + 6, mv + 7, …, 3mv} and mv, = v(v − 1)/6. As a by‐product, we remove the last two undecided cases for the intersection numbers of Kirkman triple system of order 27, this improves the known result provided in [ 2 ]. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:We establish the asymptotic expansion of certain integrals of [Formula: see text] classes on moduli spaces of curves [Formula: see text], when either the [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] goes to infinity. Our main tools are cut-join type recursion formulae from the Witten–Kontsevich theorem, as well as asymptotics of solutions to the first Painlevé equation. We also raise a conjecture on large genus asymptotics for [Formula: see text]-point functions of [Formula: see text] classes and partially verify the positivity of coefficients in generalized Mirzakhani’s formula of higher Weil–Petersson volumes.

Abstract:In a recent work, Jungnickel, Magliveras, Tonchev, and Wassermann derived an overexponential lower bound on the number of nonisomorphic resolvable Steiner triple systems (STS) of order $v$, where $v=3^k$, and $3$-rank $v-k$. We develop an approach to generalize this bound and estimate the number of isomorphism classes of STS$(v)$ of rank $v-k-1$ for an arbitrary $v$ of form $3^kT$.

Abstract:The intersection of two Steiner triple systems (X,A) and (X,B) is the set A intersect B. The fine intersection problem for Steiner triple systems is to determine for each v, the set I(v), consisting of all possible pairs (m,n) such that there exist two Steiner triple systems of order v whose intersection has n blocks over m points. We show that for v = 1 or 3 (mod 6), |I(v)| = Omega(v^3), where previous results only imply that |I(v)| = Omega(v^2).

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Abstract:The flower at a point x in a Steiner triple system (X; B) is the set of all triples containing x. Denote by J3F(r) the set of all integers k such that there exists a collection of three STS(2r+1) mutually intersecting in the same set of k + r triples, r of them being the triples of a common flower. In this article we determine the set J3F(r) for any positive integer r = 0, 1 (mod 3) (only some cases are left undecided for r = 6, 7, 9, 24), and establish that J3F(r) = I3F(r) for r = 0, 1 (mod 3) where I3F(r) = {0, 1,..., 2r(r-1)/3-8, 2r(r-1)/3-6, 2r(r-1)/3}.

Abstract:The concept of Schreier extensions of loops was introduced in the general case in [11] and, more recently, it has been explored in the context of Steiner loops in [6]. In the latter case, it gives a powerful method for constructing Steiner triple systems containing Veblen points. Counting all Steiner triple systems of order v is an open problem for v>21. In this paper, we investigate the number of Steiner triple systems of order 19, 27 and 31 containing Veblen points and we present some examples.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.
Counting positive intersection points of a trinomial and a $\mathbf{T}$-nomial curves via Groethendieck's dessin d'enfant

Abstract:We consider real polynomial systems $f=g=0$ in two variables where $f$ has $t\geq 3$ monomial terms and $g$ has $3$ monomials terms. We prove that the number of positive isolated solutions of such a system does not exceed $3\cdot 2^{t-2} - 1$. This improves the bound $2^t - 2$ obtained in [T.-Y. Li, J.-M. Rojas and X. Wang, 2003]. This also refines for $t=4,\ldots,9$ the bound $2t^3/3 + 5t$ obtained in [P. Koiran, N. Portier and S. Tavenas, 2015]. Our proof is based on a delicate analysis of the Groethendieck's dessin d'enfant associated to some rational function determined by the system. For $t=3$, it was shown in [T.-Y. Li, J.-M. Rojas and X. Wang, 2003] that the sharp bound is five, and if this bound is reached, then the Minkowski sum of the associated Newton triangles is an hexagon. A further analysis of Groethendieck's dessin d'enfant allows us to show that if the bound five is reached, then there exist two consecutive edges of the hexagon which are translate of two consecutive edges of one Newton triangle.

Abstract:We present a series of results we obtained recently about the intersection numbers of tautological classes on moduli spaces of curves, including a simple formula of the n-point functions for Witten's tau classes, an effective recursion formula to compute higher Weil-Petersson volumes, several new recursion formulae of intersection numbers and our proof of a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber concerning denominators of intersection numbers. We also present Virasoro and KdV properties of generating functions of general mixed kappa and psi intersections.

Abstract:We prove several structural properties of Steiner triple systems (STS) of order 3w+3 that include one or more transversal subdesigns TD(3,w). Using an exhaustive search, we find that there are 2004720 isomorphism classes of STS(21) including a subdesign TD(3,6), or, equivalently, a 6-by-6 latin square.

Abstract:We derive effective recursion formulae of top intersections in the tautological ring ${R^*(\mathcal{M}_g)}$ of the moduli space of curves of genus g ≥ 2. As an application, we prove a convolution-type tautological relation in ${R^{g-2}(\mathcal{M}_g)}$ and some interesting Bernoulli number identities.
