Abstract:The intersection of two Steiner triple systems (X,A) and (X,B) is the set A intersect B. The fine intersection problem for Steiner triple systems is to determine for each v, the set I(v), consisting of all possible pairs (m,n) such that there exist two Steiner triple systems of order v whose intersection has n blocks over m points. We show that for v = 1 or 3 (mod 6), |I(v)| = Omega(v^3), where previous results only imply that |I(v)| = Omega(v^2).

Abstract:The flower at a point x in a Steiner triple system (X; B) is the set of all triples containing x. Denote by J3F(r) the set of all integers k such that there exists a collection of three STS(2r+1) mutually intersecting in the same set of k + r triples, r of them being the triples of a common flower. In this article we determine the set J3F(r) for any positive integer r = 0, 1 (mod 3) (only some cases are left undecided for r = 6, 7, 9, 24), and establish that J3F(r) = I3F(r) for r = 0, 1 (mod 3) where I3F(r) = {0, 1,..., 2r(r-1)/3-8, 2r(r-1)/3-6, 2r(r-1)/3}.

Abstract:We show that for any n divisible by 3, almost all order‐ n Steiner triple systems have a perfect matching (also known as a parallel class or resolution class ). In fact, we prove a general upper bound on the number of perfect matchings in a Steiner triple system and show that almost all Steiner triple systems essentially attain this maximum. We accomplish this via a general theorem comparing a uniformly random Steiner triple system to the outcome of the triangle removal process, which we hope will be useful for other problems. Our methods can also be adapted to other types of designs; for example, we sketch a proof of the theorem that almost all Latin squares have transversals.

Abstract:There are four nonisomorphic configurations of triples that can form a triangle in a three‐uniform hypergraph, where the configurations B and D on { 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 } consist of three triples 125 , 134 , 234 and 123 , 134 , 235 , respectively. Denote by ex( n , D ) and ex( n , BD ) the maximum number of triples in a three‐uniform hypergraph on n vertices which does not contain D , both B and D , respectively. Recently, Frankl et al. used theorem of Gustavsson on sufficiently dense graphs to determine ex( n , D ) and ex( n , BD ) for all n ≥ n 0 . In this note, we use packings and group divisible designs of block size 4 to remove the condition n ≥ n 0 .

Abstract:There are four non-isomorphic configurations of triples that can form a triangle in a $3$-uniform hypergraph. Forbidding different combinations of these four configurations, fifteen extremal problems can be defined, several of which already appeared in the literature in some different context. Here we systematically study all of these problems solving the new cases exactly or asymptotically. In many cases we also characterize the extremal constructions.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an infinite series of line arrangements in characteristic two, each featuring only triple intersection points. This finding challenges the existing conjecture that suggests the existence of only a finite number of such arrangements, regardless of the characteristic. Leveraging the theory of matroids and employing computer algebra software, we rigorously examine the existence and non-existence across various characteristics of line arrangements with up to 19 lines maximizing the number of triple intersection points.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notion of system of quotients of Lie triple systems and investigate some properties which can be lifted from a Lie triple system to its systems of quotients. We relate the notion of Lie triple system of Martindale-like quotients with respect to a filter of ideals and the notion of system of quotients, and prove that the system of quotients of a Lie triple system is equivalent to the algebra of quotients of a Lie algebra in some sense, and these allow us to construct the maximal system of quotients for nondegenerate Lie triple systems.

Abstract:Properties of the 62,336,617 Steiner triple systems of order 21 with a non-trivial automorphism group are examined. In particular, there are 28 which have no parallel class, six that are 4-chromatic, five that are 3-balanced, 20 that avoid the mitre, 21 that avoid the crown, one that avoids the hexagon and two that avoid the prism. All systems contain the grid. None have a block intersection graph that is 3-existentially closed.

Abstract:We prove several structural properties of Steiner triple systems (STS) of order 3w+3 that include one or more transversal subdesigns TD(3,w). Using an exhaustive search, we find that there are 2004720 isomorphism classes of STS(21) including a subdesign TD(3,6), or, equivalently, a 6-by-6 latin square.

Abstract:The concept of Schreier extensions of loops was introduced in the general case in [11] and, more recently, it has been explored in the context of Steiner loops in [6]. In the latter case, it gives a powerful method for constructing Steiner triple systems containing Veblen points. Counting all Steiner triple systems of order v is an open problem for v>21. In this paper, we investigate the number of Steiner triple systems of order 19, 27 and 31 containing Veblen points and we present some examples.

Abstract:In a recent work, Jungnickel, Magliveras, Tonchev, and Wassermann derived an overexponential lower bound on the number of nonisomorphic resolvable Steiner triple systems (STS) of order $v$, where $v=3^k$, and $3$-rank $v-k$. We develop an approach to generalize this bound and estimate the number of isomorphism classes of STS$(v)$ of rank $v-k-1$ for an arbitrary $v$ of form $3^kT$.

Abstract:For many well-known families of triple systems $\mathcal{M}$, there are perhaps many near-extremal $\mathcal{M}$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. Such a property is called non-stable and is a fundamental barrier to determining the Turán number of $\mathcal{M}$. Liu and Mubayi gave the first finite example that is non-stable. In this paper, we construct another finite family of triple systems $\mathcal{M}$ such that there are two near-extremal $\mathcal{M}$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. We also prove its Andrásfai-Erdős-Sós type stability theorem: Every $\mathcal{M}$-free triple system whose minimum degree is close to the average degree of the extremal configurations is a subgraph of one of these two near-extremal configurations. As a corollary, our main result shows that the boundary of the feasible region of $\mathcal{M}$ has exactly two global maxima.

Abstract:This paper is a contribution to the classification of all pairs (T , G ) , where T is a triple system and G is a block‐transitive but not flag‐transitive automorphism group of T . We prove that if the socle of G is a sporadic or alternating group, then one of the following holds: (i) T is a T S(10 , 2 ) and G ≅ A 5 ; (ii) T is a T S(10 , 4 ) and G ≅ S 5 ; (iii) T is a T S(55 , 28 ) and G ≅ A 11 or S 11 ; (iv) T is a T S(55 , λ ) with λ ∈{4 , 8 , 16 } and G ≅ M 11 .

Abstract:Steiner triple systems (STSs) have been classified up to order 19. Earlier estimations of the number of isomorphism classes of STSs of order 21, the smallest open case, are discouraging as for classification, so it is natural to focus on the easier problem of merely counting the isomorphism classes. Computational approaches for counting STSs are here considered and lead to an algorithm that is used to obtain the number of isomorphism classes for order 21: 14,796,207,517,873,771.

Abstract:Let p,q be different primes and suppose that the principal p- and the principal q-block of a finite group have only one irreducible complex character in common, namely the trivial one. We conjecture that this condition implies the existence of a nilpotent Hall {p,q}-subgroup and prove that a minimal counter-example must be an almost simple group where pq divides the order of its simple nonabelian normal subgroup. As an immediate consequence we obtain that the conjecture holds true for p-solvable or q-solvable groups. Furthermore, we prove the conjecture in case 2∈{p,q} using the classification theorem of finite simple groups. Finally, we consider the situation that the intersection of an arbitrary p-block with an arbitrary q-block contains only one irreducible character.
