Abstract:Two nation-wide indoor radon surveys have been conducted in Japan. There was a significant difference between the two surveys. The first survey covered over 7000 houses using Karlsruhe passive radon detectors developed in Germany. The first survey provided relatively higher radon concentrations than expected though there are many well-ventilated wooden houses in Japan. The arithmetic mean was estimated to be 20.8 Bq m. In the second survey, on the other hand, it was 15.5 Bq m. In order to understand the inconsistency, passive radon detectors used in the first survey were placed in a traditional room at a Japanese wooden house. The concentration was functioned by the distance from the wall. Although passive radon detectors are designed to detect radon only effectively, a little contamination of thoron was often found in readings obtained from some detectors according to our experimental studies. INDEX TERMS Radon, Thoron, Ventilation, Soil wall. INTRODUCTION Many countries have experienced the nationwide indoor radon survey based on their social requirements. The indoor radon problem is still a large concern all over the world from the viewpoint of radiation protection research. This matter is supported by the fact that radon progeny inhalation makes a large contribution to radiation dose for general public. On the other hand, a lot of problems remain unsolved on the dose assessment due to radon. There is a difference on the estimate between two approaches for dose assessment: a dosimetric approach and an epidemiological approach. It has been pointed out that they differ by the factor of around 3. Various matters should be discussed so as to minimize the gap. More epidemiological studies should be conducted in naturally high background areas. In the epidemiological estimate, a long-term radon exposure is required. A passive radon detector is suitable for that purpose. However, a special attention must be accordingly paid to the presence of thoron. The presence of thoron has been ignored so far because its quantity is considered to be small. Study on Urban Soil Radon Concentration and Gamma Radiation and Their Characteristics——A Case Study of Jinhua City

Abstract:Urban soils have a significant effect on water,atmosphere,biological activity and human health.However,radon and gamma radiation of urban soils have great internal and external radiation on human beings.Based on the measures of urban soils,the radon concentration and γ-dose rate in different domains and their characteristics are analyzed.The results show that urban soil's radon concentration in Jinhua City is relatively low,and its average value is 6789 Bq m-3,which is lower than the mean of the world.The high-concentration areas are mainly located in marginal areas of hard layers,greenbelts and urban centre because of radon being liable to emission in marginal areas of hard layers and greenbelts,as well as the man-made contamination.γ-dose rate in Jinhua City varies from 0.09 μSv h-1 to 0.21 μSv h-1,which is much higher than the mean of China.It results from the fracture zone to the north of Jinhua City.However,anthropogenic factors play a predominant part in the regions south of the Jinhua River which has a long history and profound human effects over the geologic factors.In addition,water has a shielding effect on gamma radiation.

Abstract:With a typical underground space model, the concentration field of radon under three different modes of air supply and return had been simulated. The result shows that the location of return air intake has a great effect on the indoor radon concentration field, and it should be laid at the radon emission source, which the mixing of the radon in high concentration and the air in breathe area can be avoided.

Abstract:After decades of development, the indoor environment in China has changed. A systematic review was conducted from peer-reviewed scientific papers with field test data of indoor radon in China from 2000 to 2020 for three types of buildings. The mean concentrations of indoor radon for dwellings, school buildings, and office buildings are 54.6, 56.1, and 54.9 Bq/m3. The indoor radon concentration was related to seasons, climate regions, ventilation, decoration, and other factors such as soil and outdoor air. Colder seasons, especially in severe colder areas of China, newer decorated buildings, closed windows, and doors were all associated with higher indoor radon concentrations. Variables like climate region and ventilation showed statistical significance in the correlation analysis. Regarding the increasing trend of indoor radon concentration in China during the last two decades, further study of indoor radon is necessary especially for school buildings and office buildings, and will help access its environmental burden of disease in China more accurately.

Abstract:In this paper, it is incomplete that Raspecific activity is the only index, according to the measuring results of interior building materials' the radon exhalation. The radon exhalation rate of material is direct index. The "Radiological protection standard for building materials" (GB656686) was made in 1986 and the "Limit of radionuclides in building materials" (GB65662001, 2010) was made in 2010 in China. The internal exposure index was used as controlling index in both standards, I Ra=CRa/200. The average value of indoor radon concentration in China was 22.5Bqm-3 surveyed in 1980s, however, 43.8Bqm-3 in 2005. The average level of indoor radon concentration has nearly doubled in less than twenty years, which shows that the controlling index of building materials limited radionuclides are incomplete. Therefore, the radon exhalation rate of building material must be measured to interior building materials proposed in "Code for indoor environmental pollution control of civil building engineering" (GB503252006, 2010).

Abstract:The paper aims at the study on the indoor radon concentration in high buildings. The two-filter method is chosen as the experimental method to detect radon concentrations by a FT-648 radon counter. The simple mass balance model is used to simulate the relationships among the indoor radon concentration, height, and ventilation rates. The results show a good agreement between the simulation calculation and the measurement data for the height of more than about 9 meters (third floor) in high buildings. This study indicates that the indoor radon concentration in high buildings is decided mainly by the radon emission of building materials and by ventilation rates.

Abstract:Radon exhaled from building material surfaces is an important source of indoor radon. Yangjiang, located in the southern part of mainland China, is well-known as a high background radiation area (HBRA). Rather, high levels of radon and thoron concentration have been observed in adobe and brick houses. Reducing the indoor radon concentration remains an important issue in the high background radiation areas of China and the world. Generally, the walls of Chinese dwellings are solid. In this paper, a simple one-dimensional model for predicting the radon diffusion in a cavity wall is proposed, and an analysis formula describing the radon exhalation rate from cavity wall surfaces is presented. The influence on the radon exhalation rate due to leakage through structural joints and building material cracks is analyzed. The simulation results indicate that the radon exhalation rate from a cavity wall surface is far lower than that from a solid wall. The structure of cavity walls themselves is therefore useful as a mechanism for reducing the indoor radon in high background radiation areas across the world.

Abstract:Indoor radon exposure is thought to be associated with adverse health effect as lung cancer. Lung cancer incidences in China have been the highest worldwide during the past two decades. It is important to quantitively address indoor radon exposure and its health effect, especially in countries like China. In this paper, we have conducted a meta‐analysis based on indoor radon and its health effect studies from a systematic review between 2000 and 2020. A total of 8 studies were included for lung cancer. We found that the relative risk (RR) was 1.01 (95% CI: 1.01–1.02) per 10 Bq/m3 increase of indoor radon for lung cancer in China. The subgroup analysis found no significant difference between the conclusions from the studies from China and other regions. The health effect of indoor radon exposure is relatively consistent for the low‐exposure and high‐exposure groups in the subgroup analysis. With a better understanding of exposure level of indoor radon, the outcomes and conclusions of this study will provide supports for next phase of researches on estimation of environmental burden of disease by indoor radon exposures in countries like China.

Abstract:To evaluate the health risk of radon and its progeny, a large amount of accurate monitoring data is needed according to the theory and practice of health risk assessment. However, the indoor radon levels in different regions in China and worldwide reveal temporal and spatial variations. In addition, the residents living in different areas follow distinct living modes. Therefore, it is recommended and accepted by many researchers to detect the radon level in local areas and subsequently conduct health risk assessments based on local detection data. In this study, 21 bedrooms of households in Weifang city were selected, and the indoor 222 Rn and 220 Rn levels were detected with RAD7 radon detector in winter, while the annual effective radiation dose was calculated for ordinary residents in Weifang city. Our investigation showed that the 24- and 12-hour average levels of 222 Rn were 35.7±15.2 Bq/m 3 and 36.2±15.8 Bq/m 3 , respectively. The 24- and 12-hour average levels of 220 Rn were 30.4±12.3 Bq/m 3 and 22.4±11.6 Bq/m 3 , respectively. There were significant differences in the average levels of 222 Rn and 220 Rn between floors. The estimated annual effective radiation dose received by ordinary residents in Weifang city was 1.7193 mSv, of which 0.9479 mSv originated from 222 Rn and its progeny and 0.7714 mSv originated from 220 Rn and its progeny, accounting for 55.1% and 44.9%, respectively, of the total dose. Our findings suggest that 220 Rn should not be ignored by local residents in Weifang city, and more attention should be paid to 220 Rn in future research.

Abstract:Objective To explore a residential area with elevated indoor radon exposure for conducting epidemiological studies on indoor radon and lung cancer. Methods Two hundred and two cave-dwellings (CD) including loess CD,brick CD,stone CD,and ordinary house in twenty villages were selected from Yan'an and Luliang in the Chinese loess plateau.Indoor levels of thoron and its progeny as well as radon were measured with passive radon-thoron discriminative detectors and thoron progeny deposition rate devices.The exposure period covered from August 2001 through August 2002. Results Loess CD was one of the most common type of dwelling caves in both areas.The indoor radon concentrations in loess CD ranged from 17 to 179 Bq/m\+3;thoron varied substantially depending upon the distance from the device to the wall,ranged from 10 to 760 Bq/m\+3.Geometric means of indoor radon,thoron and thoron′s progeny (EEC Tn) of loess caves in Yan'an area were estimated to be 71,185 and 2\^2 Bq/m\+3,respectively,and the corresponding figures were 73,145 and 1\^6 Bq/m\+3 in Luliang area.Possible contamination of thoron on radon measurement in a previous case-control study on lung caner was discussed.The study revealed that the indoor air pollution in Yan'an area was slight compared with that in Luliang area.Migration was very low.Eighty-six percent of the investigated persons have had no migration in Yan'an area,and 90 percent of the cave-dwellings where the subjects once resided were available to our measurements.Two million people have been living in cave-dwellings over several generations. Conclusion The investigated cave-dwelling area in Yan'an is suitable for conducting epidemiological study on residential thoron and radon exposure and lung cancer.\;

Abstract:In this paper,the radon emanation model equations of soil and material are established.Considering each affected factor,the exterior emanation rate formula for the soil and building material were deduced,on the basis of which,the relation of indoor radon concentration and air change rate was deduced also.One typical underground space was calculated according to the formula obtained,and it was found that the main source of radon in underground space comes from the radon overflow in the soil which accounts for 70%~90% of the total radon emanation volume,and it was also found that indoor radon concentration is very sensitive to ventilation at the higher radon concentration.When increasing the air change rate in the underground space,the radon concentration in the air will fall fast.According to standards for the fresh air volume of underground space,the indoor radon concentration can be controlled under 400 Bq/m3easily.But when trying to control the indoor radon concentration under 200 Bq/m3,the fresh air volume per person must be above 25.2 m3/h.Considering that the fresh air can not be utilized completely,the outdoor air volume should be higher than 31.5 m3/h.
Analysis of Indoor Radon Concentration Levels and Influencing Factors in Kunshan

Abstract:Radon is a natural radioactive gas widely existing, in order to study the indoor radon level and influencing factors in Kunshan City, the indoor radon concentration of three buildings was analyzed. It was found that all of them met the indoor radon concentration limit specified in the national standard, and the indoor radon concentration was mainly related to soil radon concentration, indoor ventilation and climate. Indoor radon can be controlled from the following points: (1) While building a new building, test the radon concentration in the soil and try to avoid areas with high concentrations. (2) Pay attention to daily window ventilation, especially in cold weather and poor air circulation in winter. (3) Find and prevent indoor radon sources, building materials will also release a certain amount of radon, and interior decoration materials must be selected to meet national standards.

Abstract:Sufficient data has proven that radon and its decay products are the principal noso-genesis to lung and other related cancers. To reduce and control the effects of radon pollution, standards to limit indoor radon concentration have been issued in China and other countries or regions. To echo this, an anti-radon coating has been studied and developed with partial funding support from the Innovation and Technology Fund of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The coating had been experimented in a newly constructed building where the recorded maximum and average hourly background radon concentrations were recorded at 130,000Bqm−3 and 100,000Bqm−3 respectively under a concealed condition. The experimental results from application of the coating have shown an anti-radon efficiency of up to 99.85%, which decreases the indoor radon background concentration down to a safe level in a 72-h measurement. The coating still remains in a good condition currently and effective in anti-radon three years after the application.

Abstract:Radon is released from soil and building materials and can accumulate in residential buildings. Breathing radon and radon progeny for extended periods hazardous to health and can lead to lung cancer. Indoor air conditions and ventilation systems strongly influence indoor radon concentrations. This paper focuses on effects of air change rate, indoor temperature and relative humidity on indoor radon concentrations in a one family detached house in Stockholm, Sweden. In this study a heat recovery ventilation system unit was used to control the ventilation rate and a continuous radon monitor (CRM) was used to measure radon levels. FLUENT, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package was used to simulate radon entry into the building and air change rate, indoor temperature and relative humidity effects using a numerical approach. The results from analytical solution, measurements and numerical simulations showed that air change rate, indoor temperature and moisture had significant effects on indoor radon concentration. Increasing air change rate reduces radon level and for a specific air change rate (in this work Ach = 0.5) there was a range of temperature and relative humidity that minimized radon levels. In this case study minimum radon levels were obtained at temperatures between 20 and 22 °C and a relative humidity of 50-60%.

Abstract:In order to explore the feasibility of an epidemiological study on lung cancer in areas with elevated indoor radon and thoron exposures, 202 residences including loess caves, brick caves, stone caves, and ordinary houses in twenty villages were selected from Yan'an and Luliang areas in the Chinese loess plateau, and indoor levels of thoron and its progeny as well as radon were determined with passive radon-thoron discriminative detectors and thoron progeny deposition rate devices. The exposure period covered from August 2001 through August 2002. The indoor radon concentration in loess cave ranged from 17 to 179Bq m-3, with geometric means of 73Bq m-3 and 71Bq m-3 in Luliang and Yan'an, respectively. Geometric mean of EECTn was estimated to be 1.6Bq m-3 in Luliang and 2.2Bq m-3 in Yan'an. The study also revealed that the air pollution in Yan'an was small compared with that in Luliang. Residential migration was very low in Yan'an area: 86% of the subjects had no migration; mean number of houses for the family master was estimated to be 1, ranged from 1 to 3. It would be expected to have several hundreds of lung cancer cases diagnosed with pathological evidences in 3-5 years. Yan'an and surrounding area are suitable for conducting an epidemiological study on residential exposure to radon, thoron and lung cancer risk.
