Abstract:The radon exhalation rates of the surface of 10 different brands of glazed tiles made in China are measured and assessed. The experimental results reveal that the values of radon exhalation rate from the surface of glazed tiles are in the range of 0.36–2.52 Bq·m2 h−1, with a mean of 1.48 Bq·m2 h−1. These measurements obtained in this study are much lower than the typical radon exhalation rate international reference value of soil, and are also within the range of the reported literatures. Meanwhile, these data are taken as input parameters of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for simulation comparative study. The different plane distribution of radon from the use of different brands of glazed tiles in the model residential room is simulated. The simulation results show that the distribution of radon concentration in different XY plane is un-even, and the values of radon concentrations in XY plane is decreasing with the increase of z height. Deducting the contribution of the worldwide typical outdoor radon concentration, the maximum mean radon concentration at z = 0.5 m height was found to be 6.03 Bq·m−3 in Brand 'B.H' which accounts for 13.40% of the worldwide geometric mean indoor radon concentration. Combined with the measurement and simulation results, it can be known that the use of glazed tiles is not the main source of indoor radon, but glazed tile with lower radon exhalation rate is still needed for health purpose.

Abstract:The construction department of the Chinese government is now discussing the possibility of reducing indoor radon exposure through controlling the radon exhalation rate of building materials. However, which quantity is suitable for control and how to specify and measure this quantity are still not clear. A comparison of a theoretical model and measurement process of radon exhalation between the surface of soil and building materials was carried out. As a result, the so-called intrinsic exhalation rate is thought to be a suitable quantity for control. Through theoretical analysis and experimental comparisons of different pre-treatment methods, it was indicated that the closed chamber method could be used to measure the intrinsic exhalation rate of building materials. Measurement results show that the average intrinsic radon exhalation rate of building materials commonly used in Beijing is 4.891 mBq m(-2) s(-1), with a range of 0.323-21.250 mBq m(-2) s(-1), and the average diffusion length is 16.448 cm, with a range of 2.371-41.960 cm. Abstract:Radon exhaled from building materials infiltrates the indoor atmosphere and is transported into the indoor space by buoyancy-driven airflow. This paper investigated the dynamic coupling of radon concentration in the building wall area and indoor space. An indoor radon migration model under natural convection caused by temperature gradient was established. The radon exhalation rate, average Nusselt number, and average Sherwood number at the building wall and indoor space interface were quantified. The mechanism of radon migration from building materials into the indoor atmosphere was elucidated. Results show that natural convection influences the flow of indoor air and the radon concentration distribution, which increases with the increase of temperature gradient.

Abstract:Accurate measurements of the radon exhalation rate help identify and evaluate radon risk regions in the environment. Among these measurement methods, the closed-loop method is frequently used. However, traditional experiments are insufficient or cannot analyze the radon migration and exhalation patterns at the gas–solid interface in the accumulation chamber. The CFD-based technique was applied to predict the radon concentration distribution in a limited space, allowing radon accumulation and exhalation inside the chamber intuitively and visually. In this study, three radon exhalation rates were defined, and two structural ventilation tubes were designed for the chamber. The consistency of the simulated results with the variation in the radon exhalation rate in a previous experiment or analytical solution was verified. The effects of the vent tube structure and flow rate on the radon uniformity in the chamber; permeability, insertion depth, and flow rate on the radon exhalation rate and the effective diffusion coefficient on back-diffusion were investigated. Based on the results, increasing the insertion depth from 1 to 5 cm decreased the effective decay constant by 19.55%, whereas the curve-fitted radon exhalation rate decreased (lower than the initial value) as the deviation from the initial value increased by approximately 7%. Increasing the effective diffusion coefficient from 2.77 × 10 −7 to 7.77 × 10 −6 m 2 s −1 made the deviation expand from 2.14 to 15.96%. The conclusion is that an increased insertion depth helps reduce leakage in the chamber, subject to notable back-diffusion, and that the closed-loop method is reasonably used for porous media with a low effective diffusion coefficient in view of the back-diffusion effect. The CFD-based simulation is expected to provide guidance for the optimization of the radon exhalation rate measurement method and, thus, the accurate measurement of the radon exhalation rate.

Abstract:Radon exhaled from rocks, building materials, and soil can be harmful to human health, so it is necessary to measure radon and its exhalation rate. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to simulate radon exhalation from different medium surface by using a solid Rn-222 source, and the radon exhalation rate can be adjusted by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas. Firstly, an experiment was done to determine the activity of the Rn-222 source, and then the theoretical radon exhalation rate can be quickly calculated from the relationship between the radon source activity and the bottom area of the radon accumulation chamber. Three sets of comparative experiments were conducted using two radon accumulation chambers with different volumes, respectively. Comparing the average values obtained from the experiments with the calculated theoretical values, it can be obtained that the differences corresponding to the two radon accumulation chambers between the theoretical radon exhalation rates and the experimentally average values are all within 6%. Without replacing the radon source, the radon exhalation rate is inversely varies with the bottom area of the chamber. Therefore, the correctness of adjusting the radon exhalation rate by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas to simulate radon exhalation from different media surfaces is verified. This method can be used to calibrate the radon exhalation measuring instruments.

Abstract:Measurements of radon exhalation rate using traditional methods can be affected by back-diffusion or differential pressure in the accumulation chamber, resulting in deviations between the measured and the true values. To obtain an accurate radon exhalation rate for evaluation of radon-risk regions, two novel approaches of measurements based on traditional methods were proposed. Repeated experiments were implemented on a self-designed stainless cylindrical vessel filled with uranium tailings sand. The measured radon exhalation rates on average were 0.51 ± 0.02 and 0.52 ± 0.02 Bq m −2 s −1 for the two proposed methods, with 0.02% and 0.04%, respectively, deviations from the theoretical value. In addition, numerical techniques were employed to interpret the defects of traditional methods and mechanisms of proposed approaches to measure accurate values. Two novel approaches have significantly reduced the impact of back diffusion and differential pressure inside the chamber and consumed less time.

Abstract:In this paper, it is incomplete that Raspecific activity is the only index, according to the measuring results of interior building materials' the radon exhalation. The radon exhalation rate of material is direct index. The "Radiological protection standard for building materials" (GB656686) was made in 1986 and the "Limit of radionuclides in building materials" (GB65662001, 2010) was made in 2010 in China. The internal exposure index was used as controlling index in both standards, I Ra=CRa/200. The average value of indoor radon concentration in China was 22.5Bqm-3 surveyed in 1980s, however, 43.8Bqm-3 in 2005. The average level of indoor radon concentration has nearly doubled in less than twenty years, which shows that the controlling index of building materials limited radionuclides are incomplete. Therefore, the radon exhalation rate of building material must be measured to interior building materials proposed in "Code for indoor environmental pollution control of civil building engineering" (GB503252006, 2010).

Abstract:Indoor and Built Environment, Ahead of Print. Half of the natural radiation dose to the human body comes from indoor radon and its progeny, inhaling of which plays a key role in the development of lung cancer. Given the relationship between the radon exhalation rate (RnER) and the indoor radon concentration, accurate determination and control of the former directly affect the control and protection of the latter. In this study, a method was developed to estimate the actual RnER of building walls through building material samples. The surface RnER of the wall of any thickness that was constructed of any building material could be calculated by its intrinsic RnER value and radon diffusion length, which could be obtained by measuring the RnER of the pre-treated building material sample models through the activated carbon box-γ spectroscopic method. The experimental results indicated that the deviation between the calculated wall surface RnER of the building and the measured wall surface RnER of the building was <5.1%. Therefore, the intrinsic RnER of building materials could be regarded as an evaluation index for the RnER of buildings.

Understanding of high radon concentrations observed in a well-ventilated japanese wooden house

Abstract:Two nation-wide indoor radon surveys have been conducted in Japan. There was a significant difference between the two surveys. The first survey covered over 7000 houses using Karlsruhe passive radon detectors developed in Germany. The first survey provided relatively higher radon concentrations than expected though there are many well-ventilated wooden houses in Japan. The arithmetic mean was estimated to be 20.8 Bq m. In the second survey, on the other hand, it was 15.5 Bq m. In order to understand the inconsistency, passive radon detectors used in the first survey were placed in a traditional room at a Japanese wooden house. The concentration was functioned by the distance from the wall. Although passive radon detectors are designed to detect radon only effectively, a little contamination of thoron was often found in readings obtained from some detectors according to our experimental studies. INDEX TERMS Radon, Thoron, Ventilation, Soil wall. INTRODUCTION Many countries have experienced the nationwide indoor radon survey based on their social requirements. The indoor radon problem is still a large concern all over the world from the viewpoint of radiation protection research. This matter is supported by the fact that radon progeny inhalation makes a large contribution to radiation dose for general public. On the other hand, a lot of problems remain unsolved on the dose assessment due to radon. There is a difference on the estimate between two approaches for dose assessment: a dosimetric approach and an epidemiological approach. It has been pointed out that they differ by the factor of around 3. Various matters should be discussed so as to minimize the gap. More epidemiological studies should be conducted in naturally high background areas. In the epidemiological estimate, a long-term radon exposure is required. A passive radon detector is suitable for that purpose. However, a special attention must be accordingly paid to the presence of thoron. The presence of thoron has been ignored so far because its quantity is considered to be small. Abstract:Radon exhalation rate from soil is one of the most important factors for evaluation of the environmental radon level. For rough estimation of the nationwide radon exhalation rate from soil in China, a simple model was derived under the review and analysis of several previous works on radon exhalation theories. To show the feasibility of the model, some nationwide databases were summarized and discussed, and a trial estimation was made and compared with the measured data for Beijing. The results show that it is possible to map the radon exhalation rate from soil in China based on the present databases.

Abstract:As radon is one of the most important natural radiation sources, its radiation hazard has always been a concern alpha and beta particles emitted by short-lived radioactive radon progeny nuclides could result in a high local dose and induce radiation damage to the respiratory tract. A detailed respiratory tract model needs to be built and dose distribution in the respiratory tract should be studied to reflect the characteristics of energy deposition caused by radon and its progeny. Therefore, in the present work, a dosimetric study was conducted on the respiratory tract and non-uniform dose distribution in the bronchial region was studied. First, a detailed voxel respiratory tract model was established based on the anatomic bronchial parameters of an adult Chinese male. The dimensional parameters of the tracheo-bronchial tree of an adult male adopted in ICRP Publication 66 (ICRP 1994 Human Respiratory Tract Model for Radiological Protection ICRP Publication 66 (Oxford: Pergamon)), featured by consecutive 16 generations of bronchi structures to express the irregular structure of the respiratory tract and the radiosensitive tissues in the bronchial region, were also built for dosimetric study. Then the deposition and clearance models recommended by ICRP were used to analyse the regional deposition and transfer in the respiratory tract, and a fluid dynamic simulation was used to obtain 3D distribution of radon progeny aerosol particles in the bronchial region. The result showed that the highest deposition fraction density occurs at the first and second generations of bronchi. Furthermore, the detailed voxel respiratory tract model along with the Monte Carlo method were used to obtain dose distribution in the BB region. It was found that the dose distribution in the respiratory tract is very non-uniform and the maximum voxel dose is about 30 times higher than the average voxel dose. The dose conversion factor (DCF) for lung in the home environment derived with the dosimetry method in the present work is 9.86 mSv.WLM-1. Sensitivity analysis was performed for the parameters involved in the DCF calculation and it was found that the unattached fraction and breathing rate influence the DCF the most.
Thoron in indoor air: modeling for a better exposure estimate

Abstract:Only recently, the radioactive gas thoron ((220)Rn) and its decay products have been regarded as significant health risk in the indoor environment. This is because of new findings of increased thoron concentrations in traditional mud dwellings and considerations leading toward reduced action levels for natural airborne radionuclides. A model which describes the sources and sinks of thoron and its decay products should help to assess the indoor exposure. This work presents an extensive depiction of the influences of indoor conditions on the occurrence of these radionuclides. Measurements were performed in an experiment room and in mud dwellings in China and India. Mud even with an average (232)Th concentration was identified as a significant thoron source. The spatial distribution of the decay products proved to be homogeneous, which is in contrast to thoron gas. The prominent contribution of the unattached and attached decay product (212)Pb to the exposure was elaborated. The theoretically derived impact of air exchange and aerosol concentration, which determines the proportion of unattached decay products, could be confirmed. Transfer coefficients of the model were determined. The thoron model with these transfer coefficients predicts annual doses of almost 2 mSv for dwellers of traditional Chinese and Indian mud buildings, confirming the potential health impact of thoron. Practical implications: The radioactive noble gas radon with its decay products is well known as a health risk. After increased concentrations of the isotope (220)Rn (thoron) have been found in traditional Chinese mud-walled cave dwellings, the need for a model that describes the occurrence of thoron and its decay products indoors has arisen. This work presents such a model from the emergence of thoron in the building material until the decay to the stable (208)Pb and discusses the various influences on the occurrence of these nuclides. The model makes possible to predict the exposure of people staying in a room to thoron and its decay products and--combined with a dose model--to calculate their inhalation doses from easily measurable data.

Abstract:The impacts of mathematical models and associated parameters on radon ( 222 Rn) and thoron ( 220 Rn) exhalation rates based on in situ testing at building interior solid walls were demonstrated to improve data analysis techniques. The results showed that the heterogeneity of their activity concentrations within the measurement system was more significant for thoron than radon. The diurnal variation in indoor radon should be considered for better data quality. In conclusion, a model should be appropriately made and selected under the purposes and accuracy requirements of the exhalation test.

Radon exhalation from phosphogypsum building boards: symmetry constraints, impermeable boundary conditions and numerical simulation of a test case

Abstract:Comprehensive understanding of (222)Rn exhalation from phosphogypsum-bearing building material and its accumulation in indoor air is likely to rely on numerical simulation, particularly if transient effects, three-dimensional domains and convection are to be included and investigated. Yet, experimental data and analytical results are helpful (if not crucial) as far as validation is concerned. Having in mind computational code simplicity and in the light of a recent experimental and theoretical report on (222)Rn release from phosphogypsum boards for housing panels, this paper presents and discusses an alternative testing set-up and the corresponding boundary conditions, namely one side of the panel bounded by impermeable wall. Although this is a new facility to be tested, the resultant steady-state one-dimensional diffusion-dominant analytical solution is shown to match the counterpart deduced in the aforementioned previous report, despite it relaxes the constraint of symmetry about the phosphogypsum board centerline, which is inferred in that prior experimental scenario. In addition, numerical results are conducted for a diffusion-dominant two-dimensional time-varying test case concerning (222)Rn accumulation in a closed chamber having an exhaling phosphogypsum board tightly placed at one wall.
Considerations and Measurements of Radon Exhalation Rate

Abstract:Measurement of radon exhalation rate from building materials and quality control of building materials radon exhalation rate measurement are the hot issues in radiation protection field. Looking for a reference method for measuring,and a reasonable value for controlling,building materials radon exhalation rate will greatly facilitate the evaluation and control of indoor radon exposure hazards. This paper carefully discusses the several problems currently existing in measurement of radon exhalation rate from building materials by analyzing theoretically radon exhalation rate and comparing different measurement methods.Results show that after proper pre-treatment of building material samples,the closed chamber method could be recommended for measuring radon exhalation rate from building materials,and also inherent radon exhalation could be used as indicator for quality control of radon exhalation rate measurement for building materials.

Abstract:Building materials, such as brick and concrete, are known indoor radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) sources. Most radon and thoron exhalation studies are based on the laboratory testing of pieces and blocks of such materials. To discuss if laboratory findings can be applied to a real-world environment, we conducted intensive in situ exhalation tests on two solid concrete interior walls of an apartment in Japan for over a year. Exhalation rates of radon (JRn) and thoron (JTn) were measured using an accumulation chamber and dedicated monitors, alongside monitoring indoor air temperature (T) and absolute humidity (AHin). There were weak correlations between JRn or JTn and T or AHin at one tested wall, and moderate correlations of JRn and strong correlations of JTn with T or AHin at the other wall, meaning more or less seasonal variations. The findings aligned with previous laboratory experiments on JRn but lacked corresponding data for JTn. Additionally, a moderate or strong correlation between JRn and JTn was observed for both tested walls. Comparison with theoretical calculations revealed a new issue regarding the impact of each process of emanation and migration within concrete pores on radon and thoron exhalation. Overall, this study provides insight into parameterizing radon and thoron source inputs in modeling the spatiotemporal dynamics of indoor radon and thoron.

Abstract:In this paper, One-dimensional diffusion of radon in the natural environment was used to simulate by a simple device. According to experimental results, combined with Fick's law, it can be fitted that the effective diffusion coefficient D e of radon in the soil in this experiment is 1.8 × 10 –6 ± 6.6 × 10 –7 m 2 s −1 , the soil radon equilibrium concentration is 25.1 ± 2.4 kBq/m 3 , the radon exhalation rate on the soil surface is 47 ± 17 mBqm −2 s −1 . The radon exhalation rate of soil surface was measured twice by an accumulation chamber, the measured results are similar to the calculated results.

Abstract:Geological media are omnipresent in nature. Lab-scale tests are frequently employed in radon exhalation measurements for these media. Thus, it is critical to find the thickness of the medium at an experimental scale that is equivalent to the medium thickness in a real geological system. Based on the diffusion–advection transport of radon, theoretical models of the surface radon exhalation rate for homogeneous semi-infinite and finite-thickness systems were derived (denoted as Jse and Jfi, respectively). Analysis of the equivalency of Jse and Jfi was subsequently carried out by introducing several dimensionless parameters, including the ratio of the exhalation rates for the semi-infinite and finite-thickness models, ε, and the number of diffusion lengths required to achieve a desired ε value, n. The results showed that when radon transport in geological media is dominantly driven by diffusion effect, if n > 3.6626, then ε > 95%; if n > 5.9790, then ε > 99.5%. When radon migration is dominantly driven by advection effect, if n > 2.5002, then ε > 95%; if n > 4.0152, then ε > 99.5%. Therefore, if the thickness of the geological media (x0) is greater than a certain n times the radon diffusion length of the media (L), the media can be modeled as semi-infinite. To validate the model, a pure radon diffusion experiment (no advection) was developed using uranium mill tailings, laterite, and radium-bearing rocklike material with different thicknesses (x0). The theoretical model was demonstrated to be reliable and valid. This study provides a basis for determining the appropriate thickness of geological media in lab-scale radon exhalation measurement experiments with open bottom.

Epidemiological Potentials of Radon- and Thoron-Prone Area in China

Abstract:In order to explore the feasibility of an epidemiological study on lung cancer in areas with elevated indoor radon and thoron exposures, 202 residences including loess caves, brick caves, stone caves, and ordinary houses in twenty villages were selected from Yan'an and Luliang areas in the Chinese loess plateau, and indoor levels of thoron and its progeny as well as radon were determined with passive radon-thoron discriminative detectors and thoron progeny deposition rate devices. The exposure period covered from August 2001 through August 2002. The indoor radon concentration in loess cave ranged from 17 to 179Bq m-3, with geometric means of 73Bq m-3 and 71Bq m-3 in Luliang and Yan'an, respectively. Geometric mean of EECTn was estimated to be 1.6Bq m-3 in Luliang and 2.2Bq m-3 in Yan'an. The study also revealed that the air pollution in Yan'an was small compared with that in Luliang. Residential migration was very low in Yan'an area: 86% of the subjects had no migration; mean number of houses for the family master was estimated to be 1, ranged from 1 to 3. It would be expected to have several hundreds of lung cancer cases diagnosed with pathological evidences in 3-5 years. Yan'an and surrounding area are suitable for conducting an epidemiological study on residential exposure to radon, thoron and lung cancer risk.
